Angel Billy Golf Classic

WESTPAC Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS), established in 1975 as a weekend beach patrol and through community support and fundraising has become a critical service that operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Today it delivers aeromedical search, rescue and inter-hospital transfers to care for communities from north of the Hawkesbury River, to the Queensland border.

The Service is approaching 1,500 missions per year, with a Doctor and Paramedic on board every flight.

The Service is jointly funded by the NSW Government, corporate partnerships and community support, ensuring no-one has to pay.

Geoff Ashworth Memorial Walk

TOMAREE Peninsula Parkinson’s Support Group, (TPPSG), honoured one of their late members, Geoff Ashworth, by walking up Tomaree Mountain on Saturday.

Mr Ashworth was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, five years prior to climbing Tomaree Mountain, and shortly after, he was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer.

Mr Ashworth’s wish before he died was to raise awareness for both groups.

With lots of support, and a five-hour climbing ordeal, he conquered Tomaree Mountain.

It was the result of training four times per week with Lee Anlezark, President, Tomaree Parkinson’s Support

Group, that Mr Ashworth found the strength and determination to carry out his wish.

As a result of this climb Mr Ashworth and his supporters raised over $20,000.

People with Parkinson’s face an array of debilitating issues.

Not just the obvious tremor and fatigue, but the potential loss of dignity and independence.

People assume you are drunk when in fact you are unsteady on your feet.

Loss of driving licence which can then lead to isolation and loss of independence.

“As I have had two knees replaced and one hip replacement, climbing the hill was a test both mentally and physically,” Trevor Babore, Treasurer, TPPSG, told News

Of The Area.

“I am extremely happy with how my body performed today.”

Steve Lovell, a TPPSG member said, “The support from the group and encouragement to keep going is what kept me going, as anticipated, it was much more gruelling on the descent, my knees will be sore tomorrow.”

Ted Smith, TPPSG member stated, “I have been wanting to do this walk for four years, but have not had the nerve, strength or good health to give it a try, however, with the support from this group and a knee reconstruction both have contributed to making it possible.”

Humans Of The Area: Alan Triscott Co-Founder of Little Athletics Australia

WE’D like to introduce Alan Triscott of Fingal Bay, cofounder of Little Athletics Australia.

In 1963, at a senior athletic event in Geelong, three boys wanted to compete, however at under 12 years old they were refused.

Acknowledging their disappointment, Trevor Billingham offered to run some races for them and their friends on the following Saturday.

Alan was there when they had their first event and kindly offered to help.

Alan Triscott told News Of The Area, “It was a decision that changed my life forever!”

The children who were at the first meeting came back the following Saturday and brought more friends and in

no time 200 children were participating.

Each athlete was given a simple ticket, showing the times they had achieved in races and events.

“The senior club allowed the use of their equipment.

“The youths enjoyed the participation in the sport, particularly as they could all participate without having any outstanding talents,” he said.

To help children compete effectively Alan developed a discus made of a rubber compound and with the help of senior champions, perfected a shape and weight which is still in use today.

By 1966 there were 1200 children registered and 850 were always there every Saturday morning.

Alan and his co-founder Trevor Billingham spent the

following two years driving all over Victoria guiding communities to start over one hundred Little Athletics Centres.

In 1972 The Australian Little Athletics Union was formed.

Alan was the first Secretary/Treasurer and can proudly boast, that there have been six million children, including many Olympians who have passed through the ranks of Little Athletics in the 52 years of its existence.

Now 90 years young and a life member of Little Athletics Australia, Alan no longer takes an active part in the organisation any more, but is very happy that it so going strong.

Alan and Kate are both active members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens.

The real needs Dear News Of The Area,

WHILST I am in complete agreement with your correspond Paul Attard (Bay News Of The Area 2/11/17 “Bypass the Fingal Bay Bypass”) that the expenditure of some $50100 million of very scarce funds to relieve the traffic for the Christmas holiday period would be a waste of money, his ideas for its better use of this funds on a light rail to the airport is something only this current sell and spend State Government would consider.

Maybe the Council under its pro-development new Mayor is proposing to increase the population of Fingal Bay by allowing the same 20 story high apartment building as proposed for Nelson Bay as there is virtually no more land at Fingal for release except the National Parks but then, with the current State Government, that may also be on the agenda as it is calling for submissions on all Crown Lands with the view

As an older person who retired to this beautiful Port Stephens I, like most of the high number of retirees here, would gladly put up with the Christmas traffic if anyone would provide us with an extended hospital service that catered for our needs.

I have had to use the services of the Tomaree Community Hospital on several occasions over recent years and have nothing but thanks for the care given to me having regards to the limited facilities available.

Whilst none of us believe that a major hospital will ever be built here as, even with the new Council’s plans the turn Nelson Bay into a version of the Gold Coast, plans must be made to expand services at Tomaree.

What is needed to cater for the growing number of retirees in our area is for the hospital to be extended to provide services that the aged need to relive the major Hunter Hospital whilst we recover from the illnesses that the aged have increasingly.

COMMENTS by Paul Attard, (Opinion in Bay News Of The Area 2 November 201), in my opinion contain a lot of selfinterest.

To his credit he is willing to be convinced otherwise. Might I suggest the following which might help his dilemma?

Firstly, the current route from Final Bay to Salamander and Taylors Beach shopping precincts involves a 30 to 40 minutes return drive respectively over a Zig Zag course under very restrictive speed limits.

The proposed route I estimate would be more than halved and time involved more so reduced.

This route would also be undertaken by most of the Shoal Bay residents

travelling to that destination.

An added advantage is the reduction in traffic via the Shoal Bay and Nelson Bay bottlenecks.

Regarding road kills, I have observed more per kilometre along Government Road, Shoal Bay than the wire enclosed portions of Nelson Bay, Anna Bay roads. (These include Water birds, Echidnas, Pythons, etc,).

As regards the suggestion of water evacuation of Fingal Residents, particularly during busy periods when the caravan park alone hosts 3,000 plus residents I feel would be ludicrous in terms of capability and efficiency.

OPINION be moved to Tomaree after major operations like Knee or hips, family would be available to assist in the rehabilitation and comfort of patient and this make the bed available at The Mater or John Hunter where all the high tech facilities enable the doctors to do more operations and reduce the waiting.

The provision of these services at Tomaree is a much more effective use of resources but I don’t expect this State Government to do anything when it proposes to demolish perfectly good Stadia in Sydney and spend $2bllion on building a new one.

Maybe we should petition for a stadium then spend the funds on what is really needed.

Having regard to the current State Government priorities maybe Mr Attard’s proposal has more chance of getting up than the real needs of our community.

Bay passes through the only current real bush fire danger area and this situation will still exist if the proposed route is completed.

The alternative expenditure indicates self-interest suggesting improvements to the likes of The Hospital, Light rail Shoal Bay to the airport and Newcastle. (No mention of Fingal Bay), costs which would be markedly more than the $50 to $100 million he objects to spending.

Our Council has directed a lot of expenditure to areas other than the extreme eastern end of the peninsular.

Much of the money that is spent is compulsory as it is drawn from the profits of the Council run caravan parks. How about some of our rates being spent on our locality.

What is the arrangement for bill-splitting?

Whenever we go out as a group, there’s always someone who orders up big and then we pay for it. What is the delicate way to arrange this?

This is a fraught situation, Miss JV. People fall into all sorts of categories when it comes to dining out.

We all know the hand-sitters. When the time comes to pay, these types literally sit on their hand, perhaps concerned that their appendage will take on a mind of its own and try to offer some money towards the meal.

One step up from the hand-sitters, are the wallet openers. They open and close their wallets as though this equates to getting out some cold, hard cash, but they pause long enough for someone else to say, “Hey, I’ve got this.”

Then we have the faulty-carders. They flash around their credit card, and then realise it has expired. “I’ll get it next time,” they offer, as you go to the teller to withdraw more money and wonder why you didn’t stay home and watch Netflix.

How about the couples who order delicacies for their child? Yep, because we all know how much kids love deep-fried coconut prawns. The little treasure will just push around their rice, add a bit of slobber, make the meal inedible, and then you’ll end up paying for it.

But wait, there’s more. We can’t forget the couples who forget to bring any wine, but are incredibly grateful that you are happy to share the $80 bottle of plonk you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

And hey, since you’ve only managed one glass (they are fast drinkers) you may as well be the designated driver.

It’s a win-win!

Finally, who can forget the hair-finder. Yep, this person will happily devour their entire meal, but on the last piece of lettuce, they’ll find a hair, probably their own, and then make a scene in front of the poor wait staff who earn $8 an hour for the privilege of serving people tighter than a fish’s . . . let’s just go with a fish’s mouth.

So there you have it.

To avoid these scenarios, I would suggest avoiding people at all costs, but if you must dine out, go to one of those places where you place your order at the counter.

Arrive early and never, under any circumstances, be the last one standing.

Sometimes you have to beat people at their own miserable game.

By Marian SAMPSON DESPITE the rain 107 players swung into supporting The Latitude One Real Futures Foundation Inaugural Charity Golf Day last week.

Players were keen to tee off and take their chance at winning one of the three major hole in one prizes, a Honda Jazz from Klosters, a Toyota Yaris from Port Stephens Toyota and a boat with all the running gear from Bay Boat Sales, unfortunately none of the hole in one prizes went off.

However in a surprise win 14 year old Xavier Smith took out the nearest the pin and the $500 Ingenia holiday

supplied by Latitude One. Players participated in a range of quirky activities during the four player Ambrose competition which was won by the Valley Homes team.

David Hurley who sits on the marketing committee of Real Futures Foundation, told News Of The Area, “The aim of the day was to engage with business and the community, have some fun, improve the profile of the foundation within the community and raise funds for our youth programs. In all those aspects it can be considered a clear success.”

He believes that it is important for business

and community groups to assist youth to be inspired, motivated and to find their way into a career which suits their skill sets.

“It’s about students knowing that the community is behind them which can make a big difference to students in the long run,” he said.

The Real Futures Foundation supports students from all high schools in the Port Stephens Local Government Area.

PORT Stephens Council has been awarded $5300 from the NSW Government as part of their statewide Safer Community Compact grant program designed to help councils to deliver grassroot solutions to crime.

Portable lock boxes have officially been introduced in popular holiday locations in the Port Stephens Council area including Nelson Bay, Anna bay and Raymond Terrace.

The lock boxes can be hired out at Port Stephens Council chambers in Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay Visitors Centre and all council owned holiday parks.

Last year in the Port Stephens area, there were 415 reported steal from motor vehicle incidents, 248 steal from dwelling offences and 15 steal from person crimes.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said, “This project is designed to help car owners and tourists to take steps to reduce the risk of their belongings being stolen.”

“Beach goers will be able to store their keys in the secure boxes so they

can enjoy a worry-free swim.”

Port Stephens Local Area Command is backing the scheme, taking charge of the project with Council staff, and personally delivering all the new lock boxes to their new homes, ready for hire.

Crime Prevention Officer Alison Stewart told News of the Area, “Lock boxes are a great initiative to help reduce the instance of theft in the Port Stephens area.”

Wayne Wallis, Port Stephens Council General Manager said, “I want every

person in Port Stephens to feel safe in our community and that their families and property are protected.”

I am incredibly grateful for this funding which will support Council’s efforts to empower the community to understand the precautions they can take to safeguard against theft,” he said.

Council also will run a community awareness campaign for residents and tourists in the Port Stephens area to ensure they know what they can do to protect themselves from being robbed.

Literature Awards Finalists

By Geoff WALKER AFTER exhaustive deliberation, the preliminary judges have come up with the top 21 finalists for this year’s Port Stephens Literature Awards.

Some nine judges read the entries and then have a round table discussion (sometimes rather heated) about the ones which impressed them.

A short list of 20 is then chosen.

This year they selected 21 as it was just too hard to reject one of them.

These short stories are

now in the hands of the three finalists’ judges who independently rate them from one to 21. The points are then added up to decide the winners which will be announced at our quilt show at Club Lemon Tree later in November.

All major prize winners will notified beforehand and invited along to personally receive their awards. The others will have them forwarded by mail.

Snak N Rap has been operating to support the youth of Port Stephens for over 12 years.

International Surfers Compete at Buribi

q Macy Callaghan ready to compete at the Port Stephens Toyota NSW Pro Surfing Event at Buribi Beach Port Stephens.

CONDITIONS for the Port Stephens Toyota NSW Pro surfing event at Buribi Beach were excellent over the weekend with the ladies pumping 3-to-4 foot waves for the final WSL Qualifying Series (QS) event of the season.

116 competitors and around five hundred people in total have trekked to enjoy the unique conditions which Buribi Beach offers to surfers on the East Coast of Australia.

Tom Bennett of the World Surfing League told News Of The Area, “The surf at Buribi and its waves are unique in the area with the beach facing south.”

The event had previously been scheduled for Cronulla however a sponsor pulled out

at the last minute.

“The event was left high and dry however Port Stephens Council, Port Stephens Toyota and Destination NSW banded together to get the event up and running, with a great show of dedication to see the event go forward in such a beautiful destination with great waves,” he said.

Seven of the world’s top 16 women surfers have been a part of the tournament including Sage Erickson who is currently placed seventh, and Macy Callaghan from the Central Coast who is placed tenth.

Macy Callaghan said, “I’m trying not to think about it all but it is still in the back of my head; I just want to surf heats here like I would at any other contest but it is definitely hard to ignore.

“That was a really fun heat, the waves are so good right now which is always good for an event, especially one that is this important to everyone,” she said.

Further down Buribi Beach the Port Stephens Toyota NSW Pro presented

by Newcastle Airport Men’s QS1,000 was underway as well.

Dean Bowen said of the conditions, “The waves have been really fun here at Birubi, I haven’t had the best competitive year, but I’ve got a couple of really good boards that feel awesome and hopefully I can keep the ball rolling into tomorrow.”

While parking at the event was minimal the parking management was effective with shuttle buses in place to assist spectators to access the event.
