to Obama, Republican-leaning retirement communities such as Sun City Center definitely closed the gap. Both sides look to do so again. In an effort to narrow that margin even further, Democrats brought the big guns to SCC. Senator Bill Nelson, a popular legislator with over 3 decades in government, opened for Mr. Biden and stayed with him on stage, a smiling, friendly face just over his shoulder. But Nelson’s support was not merely his presence. The Senator described the Vice President as an “expert on foreign policy” and “an extraordinarily valuable asset in a world that has so much tumult and change.” Nelson went on to say that government required a “common sense approach.” He accused the GOP of assaulting Medicare, stating, “something had to be done to keep it solvent. Otherwise we would have run out of money in 3 years.” On Social Security, the senator was even more direct. “The Ryan plan wants to privatize Social Security. We do not want to do that. We do not want to take the security out of Social Security.” Then, in a moment pregnant with unintentional irony, Nelson stated that he “regretted that politics had become so partisan” and that “We should respect each other. That’s a characteristic American value.” When Biden took the stage, he

Marilyn Dalby was sympathetic to the Vice President. “I believe he (VP Biden) gave an excellent speech. And it’s difficult to come here and speak.” But, said, Dalby, Biden was on point. “My number one issue is healthcare, and my second issue is women’s rights. The Vice President said the way I believe.” thanked Nelson, calling him “my good friend.” Biden then smiled and said, “And I mean it.” The Vice President described his opponents as “honorable men with fundamentally different values. This is not your father’s GOP. This is not even Mitt’s father’s GOP.” While he opened his remarks by discussing women’s rights and equal pay, the bulk of Biden’s speech was concerned with Medicare and Social Security. He blasted Governor Romney’s plans for Medicare and Paul Ryan’s budget, which Biden said would “cut all entitlements” and “cost seniors thousands.”

Nancy McGinnis was excited about what she heard. “He stuck to the script, and I love that script. I want Roe v. Wade to stand, and I definitely do not want anyone playing any games with Medicare.” In his closing statements the Vice President accused Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, of “not giving the American people the credit they deserve.” He added, “America is neither dependent nor in decline. I don’t recognize the country they’re talking about.”

While inside the hall heads nodded and voices were raised in agreement, outside on the sidewalk, sign wavers were not buying it. “We have to do something now to balance the budget,” said one woman who asked not to be named, “Otherwise there won’t be any money for anything.” A friend with her agreed. “They act like we have all this money to pay for anything we want. We don’t. We’re just borrowing it!” As the election on November 6th draws closer, it seems those lines dividing our community are just growing wider. But here’s hoping that, as more than one person at the event put it, “We must remember that, when we wake up on November 7th, we’re still neighbors.” In response, it seems fitting to borrow a line from Biden’s close: “It’s never a good day to bet against the American people.” At least on that, Mr. Vice President, all of us can agree.
