Asset management report good, bad
By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The Town of Grimsby got both good news and bad news at its Sept. 18 council meeting. The good news in the asset management report provided by a consultant outlined that Grimsby’s 34 town facilities are in very good shape. “The Town is doing an excellent job,” said consultant Arunas Kalinaukas of R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited, estimating the municipality would be within the top 5-10 per cent of communities in Ontario. The bad news was the cost to maintain the faciliities. The report estimates a three per cent tax increase next year - about $270,000 - and a further 1.5 per cent each year for the subsequent 22 years. It was also noted that the projected increase do not include any interest charges which may be incurred to cover the cost of the building maintenance. Calling the projected figure “terrifying”, Ald. Carolyn Mullins, chair of the Finance and Administration Committee, said, “I had to take a deep breath and figure out how are we going to sell this?” See REPORT, Page 3
Hot stuff! Sierra Woronchaka and mom, Andrea, checked in at the kitchen safety exhibit with firefighters Tom Jamison, left, and Aaron Crawford. Grimsby’s new Station 2 on Mountain Street was packed for much of the day for the Doors Open event.
Hat Trick Hockey is back, deadline Oct. 16 The most popular contest in Niagara West is back for another year - Hat Trick Hockey. “I’ve been running this contest in the area since 1995. At this point, you can pretty much set your watch by when people start asking when the entry form will be published,” says NewsNow publisher Mike Williscraft. This year, several new prizes have been lined up with many
sponsors returning from previous years. The Grand Prize, sponsored by Mario Bruno and his team at Grimsby Hyundai, is a trip for two to a designated 2017-2018 playoff game. The trip includes game tickets, transportation and one night accommodations. Second and third prizes are gift certicates for $250 and $50 respectively from Garry Brown and his crew at Giant Tiger
Grimsby. While some want to wait until the last minute to complete their registration form (Page 2 of this edition) others want to make sure they get theirs in to be eligible for the Early Bird prize - which is sponsored by Jaff Stevenson and his Fisher Stevenson Boehm Insurance team. This year, the Early Bird prize is four tickets to the Toronto Maple Leafs vs the
Philadephia Flyers on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Early Bird deadline is Friday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. Entries must be in the NewsNow office at 42 Main St. W., Grimsby, by that time to be eligible for the Early Bird draw. If entrants opt to wait and see which players get off to good starts, the FINAL deadline is Monday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. Again, all entries must be in the News-
Now office by that date and time. “The real beauty of this contest are the weekly prizes. We have great sponsors and people love winning prizes, who wouldn’t?” said Williscraft. This year, weekly prize sponsors are Tim Hortons Grimsby, Teddy’s Food Fun & Spirits, Cole’s Florist and Different Strokes. “So no matter where you are in the hockey pool - you could be
in the Top 20 or you could be 756th, you can still win a weekly prize. It makes it fun for the whole hockey season,” said Williscraft. “Aside from the prizes, there are tons of people who have a lot of fun with it. Families vy for bragging rights, co-workers, friends. We get funny stories every year. Heck, last year the winner was chosen by a family’s dog, so anyone, or any pooch can win it all.”
