WL council sets aside MURS debate By Mike Williscraft NewsNow While West Lincoln Council agreed to put their MURS debate on hold until RFP details roll in, some residents continue to believe council is ignoring the wishes of most taxpayers. Monday night at its regular council session, Coun, Dave Bylsma came armed with a list of 10 reasons why he believes the municipality would be better served by phasing in the multi-use recreation site (MURS) project starting with replacing the arena only. Calling his presentation “an olive branch in the spirit of compromise”, Bylsma wanted it attached as an amendment to a Plannning Comittee recommendation to confirm the direction council had taken on the MURS project. Bylsma contended that the possibility of phasing construction based on priority would give council an opportunity to sit back and see if projected revenues anticipated as major funding sources for the project

come through. Mayor Doug Joyner told Bylsma his suggestion did not fit with the overall direction council was on noting the suggestion was “totally different”. “That’s just an arena....You’re contrary,” said Joyner. Attempting to clarify his presentation, Bylsma said, “The community has voiced a deep concern. Only doing an arena at this time does not change any of the other work on the MURS.” Joyner disagreed saying Bylsma was “completely on the other side” of the debate, adding the councillor wanted to discontinue with the RFP part of the process and just build an arena. Coun. Jason Trombetta said the issue before council is to settle on a plan which achieves the most for the municipality given there are factions within the municipality who want at least one aspect of the MURS completed. “A good percentage of the community wants something completed See MURS, Page 3

Grimsby duo inducted into 5-pin bowling hall of fame By Mike Williscraft NewsNow What can bowling thousands of games and helping a team to a Canadian Triple record get you in 5-pin bowling? How about induction into the sports’ Hall of Fame. That is exaclty what hap-

pened for Grimsby’s Maureen Poole and Dave Pendlebury last fall when both were inducted in the Niagara Peninsula 5-Pin Bowlers’ Association Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Welland. Their accomplishments on the lanes are extensive, as one

might imagine given they have combined for about 90 years of bowling between them. Poole has racked up 4,400 games, including her high Triple of 997. She has earned three silver medals representing Ontario at the Canadian See BOWL, Page 2
