Up Front Wellandport library reopen date set

Twp. of West Lincoln will host the grand reopening of the Wellandport Library on Monday, July 23 at 11 a.m.

The facility has received a huge overhaul as part of a $1.3 million renovation project.

The library is located at 5042 Canborough Rd.

Oosterhoff gets new post Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff was given a new assignment last Friday, Parliamentary Assistant to Lisa Thompson, the Minister of Education, in the first Progressive Conservative government of Doug Ford.

Minor mishap snarls traffic It is not often one sees transport truck, dump trucks and busses doing U-turns in downtown Grimsby, but that changed last Thursday.

A head-on but minor incident at Christie and Main the entire intersection was cordoned off for about for about 25 minutes.

The unusual measure caused all vehicles stopped in all directions pulling U-turns to circumvent the area while others turned parking lots – like Re/Max Garden City’s office – into roadways to get round the blockage.

The road was blocked pending findings after a woman driving an eastbound Cadillac – who was sent to WLMH – collided with a westbound Subaru SUV. No charges have been laid.

K of C make good use of electronic waste Turning electronic waste into a solid community donation is good work any day.

The Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Lake 4917 did exactly that when they rounded up more than 6,000 lbs of electronic waste during a drive back in April.

verted the e-waste into $518 in cash, which the K of C donated to Habitat.

University hearing study seeks participants.

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada.

Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More

Smoke testing raises alarm Several calls to the NewsNow office this week came from Jordan residents concerned about a Town of Lincoln notice regarding smoke testing of their residential pipe infrastructure.

Smoke testing for residential plumbing refers to a method where artificial smoke is pushed through the pipes to detect signs of cracks, leaks, or other defaults. Where there is a defect, plumes of smoke will emerge. This alerts plumbers and homeowners to potential weaknesses in the pipes that may cause future leaks and damage. By conducting smoke testing, you can protect your home from future damage and costly repairs.

So, generally, it is a good thing. It would seem the key word here is “artificial” regarding the smoke, as the callers are irate at the thought of having smoke introduced in their homes, regardless of the purpose or benefit. It did not sound the homeowners were going to grant access. This is a new one, so we’ll see how it plays out. M.W.

Tragedy spurs reconnections I’ve had a lot of strange weeks in the last 6-8 months. Many truly bizarre things have happened, once in a life time (or so I hope) occurrences have gone down.

We’re still here, not exactly sure how, but we’re plugging along.

This week’s strangeness was not good. None of it came from within the community, not even from within the country. It comes from within the newspaper industry, in particular, the editorial side of the ball.

Unless there are more “fake news” accusations, it is rare for the news side of an organization to be news.

We are in the job or relating news, not being a focal topic.

The killings of five newspaper team members at the Capital Gazette in Maryland got a lot of attention in the last week.

Not to make the tragedy sound tedious in any way shape or form, the world’s media – particularly in the U.S. – rolled out it mass shooting coverage template again. There were the live remotes, interviews with neighbours, helicopter shots, etc. etc.; shockingly repetitious and dangerously desensitizing as this new “normal” becomes all too much commonplace.

Over the last week I’ve had contact from several people I had not heard from in well over a decade, in one case, all the way back to college...that’s three decades in the rearview.

I track my friends in the industry through what they are doing and where they are doing it. I know the why of it. That is the common thread which weaves us together.

I was trained as a journalist.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT This whole publishing things was force fed to me.

I had no idea what I was doing for at least two years when I did my first start-up paper in 1997.

But let’s stay on point.

This is about editorial folk and why we do what we do.

Largely, it is very difficult to translate to someone who has not been infected with “the bug”. There are those who simply have an ability to write and are in the game just to have a steady gig. Others live it, breathe it. It drives them.

Depending on how you look at it, fortunately or unfortunately, I am in the latter grouping. I’ve had my chances to get away from the industry but doing the things I do is simply ingrained in my DNA. The people who reached out this week are of the same illness. This week, my friends were just looking to talk about what happened.

It wasn’t really about understanding it. You can’t understand crazy, but that does not mean you ignore things.

We traded stories about different threats we have endured over the years – everything from nuisance lawsuits from people who didn’t like seeing the truth printed to outright threats of damage and personal

bodily harm. Yes, it has happened right here in little old Grimsby.

That was a tough situation, tough story to do, but it was the right thing to do.

I still believed that even as I was cornered in a room my aggressor bettering his grip on a Louisville slugger picked up from behind the door as it closed behind me.

As I say, tough situation.

Being a journalist, or anyone in the newspaper game these days, you know one thing – there is no winning.

You don’t win. Sure, you have triumphs (and you also get crushing defeats), but you don’t win. There is no end to the “game”.

Of my friends “in the game” only one has been employed with a pension in place. The others have done contract work and developed impressive freelance careers, the latter of which can mean good money as well as a lot fun but it is anything but stable.

The connection, not to overstate that, with my group and those senselessly murdered comes from our careers and age category as most of the deceased were in their mid-50s, give or take.

The miles on the odometer are getting up there... like on the awesome Chevy Cavalier I once had that got that got up 380,000 kms before the frame rusted away from the rear axle...but there was no hint of quit in any of them.

The Maryland incident makes it even more important to journalists to work harder to turn over more rocks and shine light in places which would sure never see a ray from the sun otherwise. That was the consensus among the five us all with 30-plus years in “the game”.
