East Grimsby medical grow op gets green light Mike Williscraft NewsNow A medical marijuana facility proposed for Grimsby’s east end got a green light from the Town’s Committee of Adjustment on Friday. The proposal, approved at an emergency meeting of the CofA
committee, would see the former Freeman Herbs location at 378 South Service Rd. be converted to the grow facility. In reviewing the information, committee chair Kevin Antonides said staff approved the minor variance sought.
That variance, “to allow a medical marijuana facility to be located 80 metres from the lot line of any residential zone...” was the heart of the matter. “It really depends what you consider minor,” said Antonides. Grimsby’s bylaw on
the matter, passed in 2014, stipulates a setback of 150 metres. It was noted that was the high end of the range researched from across Ontario: 70-150 metres. While the setback issue is one component, the one that has the
nearby property owners fired up is that of odour. Whether it is along Hwy 8 or Fourth Avenue many will have been hit by strong smell from marijuana grow facilities. Proponents of the facility say this one is different, profession-
