By Katherine Grant For NewsNow Ida Guarascia sits at her kitchen table, her head tilted to one side as she tries to study her long red fingernails – not an easy task as she struggles with her vision.

“I tried to fix the polish up for you,” she says to her husband, Randy.

He gently takes one hand in his and looks it over carefully. “You did pretty good. I will take care of that for you later.”

It is a moment that may best define the relationship between the Beamsville couple.

They take care of each other – for better or worse.

Grimsby council seeks park payment alternatives

Town of Grimsby staff are exploring options to fund part of the cost of the Southward Community Park on Mud Street.

The cost of the park is an estimated $6.25 million, part of which will come from reserves, development charges, tax levy, and community funding. The Recreation Services Committee recommended the Town debenture just over $2 million over a ten-

year period. However, at a special meeting Tuesday night, July 8, council rejected that notion opting to seek a shorter term colution.

“My concern is to pay back the $2 million over 10 years doesn’t make a lot of sense. I think we go about it a little quicker than that,” said Ald. Steve Berry, adding that a shorter pay back period could save the town money in interest.

Director of finance Steven Gruninger explained that the debenture is offered through the region

and the 10-year finance plan is the minimum pay back period allowed.

Berry suggested staff review other options such as utilizing the Town’s line of credit.

However Gruninger explained that, although they do have the over $2 million available on the line of credit, it is meant for shortterm lending onlymonths, not years.

“Could we look at getting a variable rate loan through our bank?” suggested Mayor Bob Bentley.

plained that a bank loan would likely have a higher interest rate, but Ald. Joanne Johnston pointed out that even at a higher interest rate, if it’s paid over a shorter period of time, it could save the Town some money.

Ald. Carolyn Mullins agreed that seeking a 5-year loan from the bank would be a better option.

Gruninger will be following up with the Town’s bank to see what kind of interest rate could get given for the five-year, $2 million loan.

From Page 1 To say it has been a difficult year is a huge understatement but this story really begins well over a decade ago.

In 1998, Ida had a troublesome sore on her nose which simply wouldn’t heal. The diagnosis was skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma.

Ida underwent surgery and a flap of her own skin was used to repair the damage done by the removal of the small patch of skin cancer and the surrounding tissue.

“I was told it was all clear, all gone,” she recalls noting there was never any follow up.

So life went on.

The single mom of two nowgrown daughters met Randy, they fell in love and the pair began a life together about 15 years ago.

It hasn’t always been an easy existence – but it hasn’t been so bad either they are both quick to note.

Randy has a serious and debilitating back problem which has required surgery. He is also blind in his left eye as a result of a cataract with which he was born and cannot be corrected. His disabilities aren’t something he allows to interfere with his enjoyment of life. He has lived in the Beamsville area since 1999 and has coached hockey and soccer when his back condition allowed.

Ida has health issues of her own.

About a year before the skin cancer surgery in the late 90s, she was hit by a car while walking through a parking lot and suffered a heart attack as a result. She has lived with a heart condition since then.

Being both positive and practical, the couple has always made the best of it. They live in a modest rented home on Cosby Road in Beamsville.

They have a pair of dogs to keep them company and a stray cat recently took up residence a well.

Unable to hold down full-time jobs, they live on disability pensions.

And until now, they have managed.

Late last fall, Ida once again had a sore which wouldn’t go away and her right eye was watering incessantly.

Without a family doctor there were a few missteps but when Ida was finally assessed, the news was dire – a cancer diagnosis was confirmed.

“From that day on it never stopped,” said Randy referring to the whirlwind of scans and other diagnostic tests which came into play.

It soon became apparent that basal-cell skin cancer had now worked its way into and around Ida’s right eye and inside the tear duct.

Although surgeons were able to save her left eye, the eyelid is being pulled down gradually closing her eye, obscuring her vision as the large pouch of skin covering much of her face, shrinks and heals.

In addition to the disfigurement, Ida is struggling with the loss of her independence. She can no longer drive or cook or even tend to her own grooming but Randy has been there every step of the way.

“He really has gone above and beyond,” says Ida of her husband.

“Hey, you were there for me, carrying me to the car when I couldn’t walk, helping me to the bathroom when I could only crawl,” he told her.

Randy is trying to do the gardening, cut the grass and do the housework, laundry and cooking, and they are clearly worn out from dealing with the ordeal of the last several months. Their children (Randy has two grown sons), have helped out but don’t live nearby. The day-today tasks are still a struggle.

Ida will undergo surgery this fall where her new face will be sculpted to allow for a facial prosthesis to be put in place. A pair of eyeglasses will be fitted to hold the prosthetics, an eye and nose, in place. The cost will be about $5,000 to $8,000.

For now, their financial needs are of a more pressing nature. They have received some financial support to partially cover the cost of her medication but her five-week hospital stay took its toll on their already strained budget with the cost of travel and parking.

The couple has nothing but high praise for the expert care Ida received at St. Joseph’s.

“They were fabulous, just fabulous,” said Ida. “The care has been unbelievable.”

For now, she is resting, healing and trying not to stress about finances. It has been an emotional rollercoaster.

“When I pass people on the street I hear them say, ‘that poor woman,” says Ida sadly. But worse for her, “children are terrified of me.”

Randy is quick to reassure her that people care and this is a chance for parents to teach their children compassion – she shouldn’t feel she should stay in her own home.

When Ida’s young grandson came to visit recently there was some trepidation on her part. Concerned about how he might react, she tried to prepare herself. But he saw past her changed appearance, she is still the grandmother he knows and loves.

And that is as it should be.

Unfortunately the robins mistake these X’s for runway markings. At the beginning of June they’re naturally excited - nesting, mating and flying off in all directions like somebody spiked the Hummingbird feeder. Now, late in June it’s the youngsters with sparse feathers and new wings who are challenging the integrity of the glass around my house.

Thieves recently broke into a residence in the capital of San Salvador and fled with valuables that included the owner’s parrot.

When the getaway car was stopped by police in a routine check, Paquita began squawking: “Robbery! Robbery!” - the exact words spoken

As documented in her book Alex & Me, Irene Pepperberg’s 30-year research project with Alex, the brainy African grey parrot was nothing short of amazing. By adding numbers and differentiating shapes, colours and textures, this parrot may have come closer to exhibiting human intelligence than any other animal on earth. He was also a rascal who enjoyed dancing and needling his handler.

If Pepperberg happened to greet another parrot in the laboratory first, Alex would get jealous and sulk all day. He would then refuse to cooperate and become very demanding. Instead of answering questions, he’d ask for food, toys, showers and a transfer to his gym. On one such day, Alex demanded a nut, but Pepperberg was ignoring him.

Even after decades of interplay with the parrot, she was stunned to hear him say: “Want a nut. Nnn ... uh ... tuh.”

I have had my own awkward encounter with the beak that speaks. Except this one whistled. Many summers ago I was sitting at an outside café on Bestor Square in Chautauqua, New York enjoying a coffee, a muffin and that town’s daily newspaper. I had just finished teaching my morning humour writing class. Kirsten, the artist in residence, was behind me working on a clay sculpture with her macaw perched in a cage beside her. An unusually large American parrot, the bird was brightly coloured with a long feathered tail.

I could hear the woman padding down the sidewalk before I saw her. She was middle-aged, large and lugging a heavy bag of groceries in each hand. She looked over-heated in a flowery summer dress with a floppy straw hat. As she came into my view, Kirsten’s parrot let loose with a very, sharp, extremely loud wolf-whistle.

Wing Ding Chicken and Blues Fest set with great line up Enjoy wings, blues and more at the Rotary Club of Lincoln’s upcoming annual Wing Ding Chicken and Blues Fest.

The event takes place at Charles Daley Park in Jordan, Friday, July 18 from 4-10, Saturday, July 19 from noon until 10 p.m. and Sunday, July 20 from noon until 6 p.m.

Beamsville resident Kristel Niemi has been the female vocalist for Gatorbait for just over two years.

Niemi has a special love of the blues.

“I love the blues.

There is something about it, that allows you to pour out whatever you’re going through,” she explained.

“Sometimes it’s surprising.

I find myself lost in the feeling of a blues song, or a group of songs, like no other genre.”

Gatorbait, a Niagara based blues band, was founded and is managed by Max Hillier, who is a blues harp (harmonica) player. John Kott is a connoisseur of the guitar. Bassist Darryl Kaine brings the foundation, along with Mike Zimmick, who will carry drums at the Wing Ding.

Kristel Niemi Gatorbait has two featured ladies; Anne Singer and Kristel Niemi. The band frequents the Angel Inn, Donnelly’s, and plays several festivals, including Blues at Fireman’s Park, and the Niagara Falls pre-fireworks series.

At the Wing Ding people are getting an opportunity to hear a great show featuring Anne Singer and Niemi, with Gatorbait. Each bring something unique to the table making for an exciting show.

FORT Parking Lot Paint Off this Friday The Foundation Of Resources for Teens (FORT) in partnership with the Grimsby Public Art Gallery are hosting a Parking Lot Paint-Off. The event will be held at Rikochez Pub and Eatery, at 54 Ontario Street in Grimsby, this Friday, July 11 from 1-5 p.m.

“It’s a great to en-

courage positive artwork in the community,” explained Liz Bond, Grimsby program coordinator.

Youth ages 1118 can register to paint either graffiti or abstract art work on a canvas. The top three paintings will be displayed in Rikochez. There will

also be a fundraising barbecue, with proceeds going to FORT. The FORT provides free recreational programming and resource services to youth aged 11 to 18. There are locations in Grimsby and West Lincoln. They offer the only free, full service youth

drop-in centre in West Niagara. Over 600 youth access programming each month and thousands of snacks & meals are served each year.

“Fabulous” day for garden tour The weather was just perfect for a stroll through a summer garden, or 10.

The Grimsby Garden Club held its annual tour last Saturday featuring 10 lovely – and very different – local gardens.

“Mother Nature was just fabulous,” said Mary McLaren, garden club secretary and publicity co-chair. “She must love the Grimsby Garden Club.

“We sold 283 tickets which far and above exceeded our expectations.”

It’s going to be ‘Happening at the Forty’ July 24-26.

The third annual Happening at the Forty is all set with plenty of fun for everyone.

Todd Pyper, event chair, said “This is the third festival since the merger of the Happening at the Park with the Festival at the Forty, but it is forty years since the original Frontier Days kicked off the desire for a community based festival.”

The festival kicks off on Thursday with a special festival edition Farmer’s Market on Main Street from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. The market will feature Calvin the Magician, Sparkles the Clown and live music.

Be sure to stick around for music, fireworks and food trucks at Murray Street Park from 7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

“This year, we’ve expanded the fireworks show to include two hours of music by Rutherford and Robichaud. We also have five food trucks, so come early,” said Leigh Jankiv.

Rankin Run director Mary Ann Edwards was named the 2014 T. Roy Adams Humanitarian Award winner last week. Reg. Chair Gary Burroughs made the presentation.

Recognition well-deserved Mary Ann Edwards is no stranger to Niagara West, thank God! Edwards has been executive director of the Rankin Run since its inception in 2004, helping raise $3.9 million for cancer research, among many other benevolent pursuits.

Among the Run’s support locally was a $150,000 commitment to West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s new digital mammography equipment. First off, I want to say we had quite a discussion in the office about placing Ida Guarascia’s photo on the front page as we did. It is shocking...for many reasons, but it was decided after speaking to Ida. It is important for people to realize there is a kind soul behind that face. She is just a regular person, a hard worker with a good heart.

I have known the Guarascia’s for a couple of years. Ida had been in the office talking about her upcoming surgery over the winter months.

If you read the feature, of which Katherine Grant did a great job, you will know by the time you get to this space that things did not go as was expected.

In the case of this couple, I am hoping the community or a few benevolent souls may be able to help these folks.

Their financial situation is significantly dire.

Randy has been on disability for years due to a degenerative back issue.

Ida’s health issues have impaired her ability to work for some time.

I happened to run into the couple in front of Meridian Credit Union last month as Ida wait-

Randy had gone inside to cash in RSPs to pay off their vehicle to get out from under monthly payments.

Aside from day-today issues, the couple is looking at an expensive process in which Ida’s face will be restructured and reshaped. As with her cancer surgery, doctors are not really sure how that process will go, hence the estimate of $5,000-$8,000 for the prosthesis work.

A friend of theirs contacted me about organizing a fundraiser for the couple, but timing is also a concern here as their need is immediate.

Planning something 3-4 weeks down the road is a bit long term when you are living day to day, but as I say, I am absolutely willing to jump behind something.

Of course, you could call my cell, 289-4424244, as well. Should we be able to generate any interest, I would be glad to approach someone in town to organize and accounting process of some sort. There are a lot of great people in town I have worked with in the past, so I leave that kind of thing up to them; definitely not my area of expertise.

All I can say on this one is these folks are good, hard-working people who are in an extremely difficult spot.

Ida was hesitant about doing anything at all, understandably. From my vantage point, I just wanted to tell their story, hang it out there, and see what echoes back.

Months of planning culminated in a whirlwind of activity and, “poof”, ClubWEST Magazine was born.

Readers and advertisers unanimously loved it: a homerun to be sure.

After being out just one day, we already had two pages of ad space come in the door from people who want to be in the September edition, so a pretty good barometer right there.

We are already feverishly working on features for the next edition, so the gang here at 49 Main West is doing just fine. Thanks for all the nice comments!

New event at St. Alban’s St. Alban’s Anglican Church in Beamsville will host a new community event this Saturday – Festival of Cultures, from 2-9 p.m.

Everyone is invited to celebrate multiculturalism and have lots of fun.

The event is all outdoors in the large parking lot of the church located at 4341 Ontario St., (opposite Shopper’s Drug Mart). The event will have a mix of three different cultures within the community of Beamsville and area - Canada, Mexico and South America.

There will be live entertainment on a large outdoor stage with four bands which play all varities of music, with singing by local and international talent. There will be adult activities, kid’s zone, and dozens of vendors.

Enjoy home-cooked South American and Mexican food dishes plus Canadian barbecue done on the Church grounds.

It’s free admission to the site. Donations accepted. There is no parking on the Church’s grounds or parking lot. Handicap parking across the street at Shoppers. Other parking lots can be used at Beamsville District Secondary High School, 4317 Central Ave., off May Street. One street east of Ontario.

All Proceeds will be donated to Community Care of West Niagara, St. Alban’s Anglican Church and the Spanish Temporary Workers Ministry.
