NRP officers honoured for bravey in Vineland fire Two Niagara Region police constables received major honours for bravery at a special ceremony Tuesday afternoon in Toronto. Const. Philip Sheldon received the Star of Courage and Const. Dale Culley received the Medal of Bravery - both bestowed by Canada’s Governor

General, Julie Payette. The Star of Courage recognizes acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril. The Medal of Bravery recognizes acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances. On July 5, 2015, Const. Sheldon and Const. Culley attended a Vineland

residence for a call related to a family domestic disturbance. Almost immediately upon attending the residence, Const. Sheldon and Const. Culley heard cries for help coming from inside the residence. Without hesitation, they ran into the residence to assist.

Const. Sheldon was first through the door followed closely by Const. Culley. Upon entering, they encountered a 50-yearold man standing in the living room beside his 73-year-old mother, who was in a wheelchair. Within seconds of the officers entering

the home, the man ignited gasoline that had been poured throughout the room. Const. Sheldon attempted to rescue the woman and as a result suffered significant injuries. The officers – both injured – managed to escape the burning home. See BRAVERY, Page 2
