HWK Insurance merges with Duliban By Mike Williscraft NewsNow With nearly a century of serving West Niagara, Hunter Wilson and Kelly has merged with Duliban Insurance Brokers. The change became official earlier this month and was highlighted with the presentation of a $10,000 cheque

to Beamsville Lions Club Feb. 9. In making the announcement, Adam Duliban thanked HWK president Bob Kelly for his long-time service to the community. “We are making this donation to honour Robert Kelly to recognize his significant contribution to our community,” said Duliban.

As one of Lincoln’s oldest businesses - having served clients since 1920 - and Kelly himself for nearly 40 years, Kelly said he was looking forward to his retirement. “We’ve really loved serving our clients and the community as a whole,” said Kelly.

to ensure a smooth transition. The two have worked together several times in the past, including an annual program for Community Care of West Niagara. Duliban noted their commitment of sup-

port will continue for CCWN. The donation to the Lions was the choice of Kelly, who has been a long-time member of the organization. The Lions have not earmarked the funds for a particular project as yet.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Tips to create more space in your home As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up to a larger home is on the upswing across the country, especially as markets remain hampered by tight inventory levels. As a result, more and more Americans are choosing to renovate their current homes instead of relocating. In fact, some forecasts predict that 2015 renovation spending could exceed the record of $324 billion set during the peak of

last decade’s housing boom. While the hunt for more square footage can be challenging, homeowners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete addition are the only options. Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home. 1. Finish an unfinished basement. A basement renovation can hold limitless potential and increase the resale value or income

potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theater, office, spare bedroom, basement apartment or recreation room. The key to doing it successfully is to focus on what’s behind the walls, especially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insulation is critical. Look for products that are vapor permeable, dimensionally stable and mold and moisture resistant.

2. Create a more open-concept feel with light and color. If your home wasn’t blessed with towering windows, installing French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space. Likewise, choosing a paint color for walls, trim and moldings that is lighter and cooler in tone (think soft grays or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel. Collision slows Nordana Sky By Skip Gillham For NewsNow The Keil Canal is a busy European waterway and became the location of a collision earlier this month that involved a Seaway trader. The Nordana Sky struck the stern of the containership Vera Rainbow as the former was preparing to exit the Brunsbuttel Lock. Nordana Sky was built at Leer, Germany, and was completed in March 2015. The 120 metre long cargo ship was launched as Symphony Sky but entered service as Nordana Sky under charter to Nordana of Denmark. It has one cargo hold and two 85 tonne cranes for loading and unloading. The owners soon rechartered the vessel to Transport Desgagnes who sent it to the Great Lakes from July until late fall under the Canadian flag. The ship came inland at least as far as Windsor before

resuming saltwater service for the winter months. The Vera Rainbow was the more seriously damaged in the Feb. 5, 2016, collision when Nordana Sky rammed it from behind in its enthusiasm to enter the Keil Canal lock. Nordana Sky was soon cleared and is due at Alexandria, Egypt, on Feb. 20.

Coldest Night walks Saturday Two worthy causes, YWCA Grimsby Affordable Housing Partnership and West Niagara Community Care are two worthy causes which can be supported while getting a little exercise this weekend. The Coldest Night of the Year Walk will be hosted, times two, in Grimsby and Beamsville this Saturday. The realities of today’s society: • 70 per cent of those at a poverty level of income are working FT hours, and; • One in seven users of homeless shelters Canada-wide is a child. There are a lot more stats, but one gets the idea. To find out more about the walks and how you can support these two casues, call YWCA’s Laura Ip, 905-9883528 ext. 3247, or CCWN’s Carole Fuhrer, 905-563-5822.

March 3 to bring a ray of hope It has been a very long road for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Wait...scratch that. Make that a VERY, VERY long road. For those who have hung around West Niagara for nearly 20 years you will know where the road started. It was an inauspicious start with a call for WLMH to be shut down. Bring on the “Save the Hospital” Committee and the massive rally at Grimsby Secondary School in the winter of 1997 and things slowly, painfully at times, started moving down said road. The problem, for virtually all in the community, has been that not a single soul knew just where the heck this road we are all on is heading??? Everyone has had their wish list, but even the most motivated supporters of the hospital has seen hope fade to near extinction at times. At different intervals, doubt flares. As recently as this month, I got an “off the record” call from someone who very seriously said he had heard from a “source”, which he considered solid, that Hamilton Health Sciences had set in motion a plan to absorb (my word) millions raised from the WLMH capital campaign. There is not one iota of truth to this semilingering rumour, but it does raise its head every so often. The lack of any visible motion or remotely positive information about the long-term plans for WLMH are to blame.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT As noted, if hardcore supporters have doubt creeping into their collective minds, why would it not creep into the minds of anyone skeptical? Of course it would. So now, FINALLY, there is a ray of hope. It is not a light at the end of a long tunnel, but it would put us all in a tunnel, with a true destination in mind. That is an exciting possibility. What is this ray of sunshine? To get the whole rundown, you will have to attend the Thursday, March 3 conversation hosted by Hamilton Health Sciences at the Livingston Activity Centre, still known to many as the seniors centre. At this session, which will run from 6:30-8 p.m. attendees will hear what can best be described as the most positive news regarding WLMH since the provincial government took the facility off life support and allowed it to operate as the well-run institution it has been. At this session, HHS president Rob MacIsaac will outline the results of the lengthy “Our Healthy

Future” information gathering process and how grassroots input has been assimilated into overall plans for HHS’s facilities. Everybody wants to see a groundbreaking ceremony on a new building. No question! But those who sit back and say, “more blah, blah, blah” let me say this: you are not and will not get a new facility - or maybe even keep the existing one - if the proposed services program assembled by HHS is not confirmed. Basically, you’re not building a new house without a good foundation. Confirmation of the clinical services which will be outlined March 3 will be that foundation. And that is very good news. Getting the proposed future services for the site in place will allow for the next phase, a capital request, to develop. Since services need to be worked through, no timelines can or will be set for a building proposal yet. Hospital officials believe the services component is the “heavy lifting” phase of the process. It stands to reason that if the proposed services are affirmed up the ladder, the provincial government would also be on board with maintaining and providing a suitable facility to carry out those services. Because the silence from the Liberal government has been deafening, it is tough to believe there could be a sign of movement, but we genuinely have one. See you March 3!!

Owl Prowl set for this weekend The fourth annual Owl Prowl is set for this weekend, Feb, 20-21. The tour, run by Carla Carlson of Niagara Nature Tours, is a field trip-style event which will start at 10 a.m. and run to about 5 p.m. “We have worked very hard to find the locations of wild owls for us to see, and are hoping to see 3-4 native species this year,” said Carlson, noting the owls are found from Niagara West through to Fort Erie. For the very first Owl Prowl in 1998 21 people signed up. Four species and seven owls in total were spotted. “This was fabulous because of how secretive they are. Since we were able to start conducting Prowls again in 2013, at least 327 people have seen 5-6 species and on one memorable day, 13 individual owls,” she said. ‘ In the past we have seen Eastern Screech, Northern Saw-whet, Snowy, Long-eared, Short-eared and a Great Horned Owl on her nest.” Registration for the this weekend’s owl prowls has started and space is limited. For more information call 905-562-3746 or 1-888-889-8296.

REWARD

Focus on your goals, not ups and downs in the market For many, retirement is something off in a distance, something that gets lost and often overlooked as we get busy with life. I think it’s time you take the critical step to give your financial goals the time they deserve. Taking control of your financial goals and investment plan is crucial. A first step is to gather all your financial papers, investment statements, group plan insurance policies, tax assessment notices and call me at the Edward Jones office in Grimsby to book a time to develop your own plan. “If you have multiple accounts with multiple banks, insurance offices and financial institutions, you may have a huge amount of documentation and such,” says Marc Seguin, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones in Grimsby. “This can make it difficult to get a clear picture of your goals and how you’re tracking to reach them,” Among the many benefits of developing your own plan and

consolidating your accounts: • Help reduce costs through reduced fees • Eliminate conflicting or lack of advice. • Ensure proper diversification

“I think it’s time you take the critical step to give your financial goals the time they deserve.”

Marc Seguin

• Reduce paperwork “Consolidating your financial information and assets gives you a more focused view of how everything is or is not working together,” Marc added. Structuring this kind of assessment is the strength of dealing with Marc’s Edward Jones Grimsby office.

raised $10,000 for the Hospital Foundation Project XRay campaign, and we hope to be able to repeat that again this year. “ For further information, please contact Kinsmen Bruce Bond at (905) 9453948.

“We provide all our clients with a personalized plan built on a one-on-one relationship We provide easy to understand strategies that are time tested, reviewed regularly for progress and adjusted regularly as life happens.” Clients want to make sure their advisor listens to their unique needs and looks out for their best interest. Some of the most popular questions Marc’s client have are: • How much will I need to retire? • Should I invest in a TFSA or RRSP? • When and how do I draw from my RRIF? • Should I own stocks and which ones? • Are we in for a market correction? It does not matter if one is in their 20’s, their 60’s or any place in between the same basic principles apply. “Your bills get paid, mortgage, car payment, etc. You would not think of not paying your hydro this month. Pay yourself first,” says Marc.

Let’s talk.
