WL wants regional OP flexibility By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow As Niagara Region develops a new Official Plan for 2021, West Lincoln councillors want assurance the Township will not be painted with the same broad brush as larger urban centres. Maintaining flexibility, they say, can play a role in allowing them to shape their own community, protect agriculture and retain the character and lifestyle. “There is going to be a lot of input gathered,” David Heyworth, Official

Plan policy consultant for the Region told Council July 23. “You will have a lot of opportunities. We are working hand in hand with area planners. They are our key input and know the planning issues of a municipality. We have to conform with provincial policies but we want to provide flexibility where we can.” Coun. Dave Bylsma wanted confirmation that regional policy makers are looking at West Lincoln through a rural lens and respecting the differences that

attract people to a smaller community. He was concerned the same brush being used for urban intensification needs in areas such as downtown St. Catharines “is not painting us all with the same needs.” While the original Official Plan developed in the 1970s primarily focused on protecting agricultural lands and establishing urban boundaries, the Region has since increased its planning functions under an evolving provincial planning

By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Nick Wallace has covered a lot of ground. From a career start of performing for family and friends to hand magic on Main Street Grimsby to The Rio’s Las Vegas stage his career has taken him to some interesting places. None have proven more exciting than a whirlwind taping of the Penn & Teller: Fool Us television show in March. The program is scheduled to air Monday, Aug. 27 at 8 p.m. on The CW Network. The 36-year-old performer who graduated from Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School “back when it was all still portables” said the experience was incredible. “The process started with me submitting two tapes with two different tricks. The producers chose one,” said Wallace. After several levels of communication with producers, Wallace and his wife, Jessica, were See MAGIC, Page 3
