WLMH build local share down to $50M By Mike Williscraft NewsNow The good news keeps on coming for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s rebuild process this time the local share needed for the $200 million build will be $50 million, not $60 million as initially projected. As the process has advanced, the detailed analysis on what equipment can be shifted from the current building to the new site - once completed - has been done and news is very good

from Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS). “They literally went around and put tags on everything they can use in the new building. They found that many years of keeping equipment updated and renewed has paid off,” said Andrew Smith, chair of the WLMH ‘Take It To The Finish’ Fundraising Committee, who added it is great news for municipalities which have anteed up to support the campaign, too. Main Street East accident claims life of 71-year-old woman By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A 71-year-old woman died as a result of injuries sustained after being struck by a car on Main Street East, just east of Nelles Road South, in Grimsby on Saturday afternoon. The woman was lucid and speaking with people who immediately stopped to help before all emergency services arrived at the scene. She was immediately transported to an out-of-region hospital for care, but succumbed to her injuries later in the day. The 57-year-old woman, who was driving a blue Dodge Charger, was not injured in the accident. According to police, the woman was struck while attempting to

cross the street from the north side to the south. “The vehicle was entering the westbound lane of Main Street East from a private drive (parking lot) when the collision occurred,” according to Niagara Regional Police. Grimsby resident Mark Radey was on the scene seconds after the incident, helping the victim until police, fire and ambulance arrived. “I was headed to Cole’s and had just turned off Nelles. The car which struck the woman was stopped and the driver was getting out. She was clearly distraught,” said Radey. “I went down the middle of the road and parked my truck about 40 feet back just to block traffic.”

In the past, Radey had been in a similar situation, so he had some idea of what needed to be done until emergency personnel arrived. “She wanted to get up, but I got her to stay down and kept talking with her constantly. She was not in pain and was lucid, clearly in shock,” said Radey. “It seemed 4-5 seconds after I was there a woman came with a blanket. She was really good. She said her husband was a firefighter and emergency supplies are mandatory in their vehicles.” A couple of minutes later an offduty nurse happened on the scene and lent her expertise. When emergency personnel arrived, there was an exchange on information,

then the volunteers stepped back and let the professionals take over. “It was amazing how everybody seemed to jump in and offer help. One lady took over directing traffic,” noted Radey, who noted his first aid and CPR training at work, Dofasco, came into use. “I really appreciate Dofasco training us. I have had to use it twice in my life. We just kept the woman stable, doing what we could. It was just a tragic accident.” The collision remains under investigation by detectives with the Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information or anyone with video surveillance in the area is asked to contact the NRP at 905-688-4111, ext. 1009265.
