New event
Motors N Music kicks off Saturday The inaugural Motors N Music festival pulls into Grimsby’s Southward Park this Saturday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The event is both a car show full of rare and exotic models - as part of a juried show - and a live music concert. “We are excited about the event. It has come together very well,” said organizer Ron Baker. “We have arranged the layout to consider all COVID protocols, something which concerns many. Also, with limited parking on-site, we’ve planned a shuttle from downtown to make access easy.” The shuttle will start at the Peach King Centre (PKC) then go the heart of downtown in front of the current
Craig Budd Desjardins Insurance location at 49 Main St. W. The shuttle runs from the PKC every 30 minutes from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aside from music and motors, there will be food kiosks, kids’ activities, a beer & wine tent, and more. Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area Board will also host a “welcome desk” on site to answer visitors’ questions. “The event is a perfect opportunity to showcase our community to visitors from across southern Ontario. I’m looking forward to seeing how this event evolves as I know Ron has great plans,” said Mayor Jeff Jordan, also a member of Grimsby DIA board.
Who had a good time?
Raise your hand if you had fun at this year’s Comedy Night in Grimsby Series, sponsored by Grimsby DIA and NewsNow? Those who took in last Wednesday’s closing night, featuring headliner Jeff Leeson wrapped up the five-night series, sure did. The shows marked the first multi-night event of any kind in Niagara West in 18 months and is likely to reboot for 2021. Marks - Photo
Handling Specialty’s ship comes in...again By Mike Williscraft NewsNow At a time when any news is good news in today’s business climate, Grimsby Handling Specialty (HS) got some stellar news last week when they closed a $30 million contract with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Handling has worked its way to the top of the entertainment world heap over the last 25-plus years when it comes to creating hydraulic lifts to allow for some amazing special effects.
If you have been to Las Vegas and taken in O by Cirque du Soleil at The Bellagio you will have seen some of the Handling team’s handiwork. The contract with RCC will include: • Seven underwater stage lifts; • Two diving board tilters; • A system hydraulic power unit, and; • All controls for operation and safety, installation, sea trials and hand over. “All of this work will be completed by Handling Specialty pay-rolled staff. As well, local suppliers are
part of our supply chain and are a major contributor to our success, including companies right here in Grimsby,” said Tom Beach, Handling Specialty’s president. Like many of the intricate projects which Handling has undertaken over the years, the announcement of this deal last week was the culmination of years of background work. “This was two-and-a-half years of work from concept to contract signing,” said Beach. “And the truly unique thing is I have never met this client in person.
All drawings, proposals and meetings were completed using digital technology. To this day, we have not met our customer in person.” Handling is currently working through another RCC contract to develop aquatic features. “The Oasis series has been terrific. That particular theatre is at the stern of the vessel with amphitheatre seating, then it reaches up balconies and bars where people can watch the show. Fundamentally, you’re seeing the ‘prop chop’, the See HANDLING, Page 2
