It was his opportunity to present his work, the mural painting “500 Years of Royal Canada” to HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh at Her Majesty’s official Canadian residence, Government House (Rideau Hall) in Ottawa. For some of Romagnoli’s recollections of his once-in-a-lifetime royal meeting please turn to Page 3.

Another key decision made when it came to the site’s operation was to avoid what had been touted as an other revenue stream by prior management - namely using the out put material (diges tate) as source mate rial to make fertilizer.

Due to run-off from the storage area, the pond that was on site was in very rough shape when the new management took over.“The dry feed system has been systemseedwasitaretheyoverhauls.moreternallyprocessingternalthebottomesdredgetirelypumpfirstplan,turalNASMtheHuang.weliterallygrapepurelythewerebecausedecommissionedcompletelyandofthatweabletoconvertpondbacktobeingforstormwater.Itwasfilledwithpomace.Itwaspurplewhenfirstgothere,”said“Wehadtoirrigatefarmfieldundera(non-agricul-sourcematerial)too.Oneofthethingswedidwasthatpondendownandthenabout6-8inchofsludgeoutofthetoremoveallsediment.”Thoseweretheexchangestothesystem.Inneededevenupgradesand“Withthegrapeseedusedtouse,westillstrugglingwithuptotoday.Theresomuchgrapeputthroughthiswehadtoclean

Clearing out the solid feed storage and restoring the health of the pond went a very long way to nearly eliminating a huge thorn in the side of the site’s neighboursnamely“We’reodour.notgoing to tell you there is none, we don’t have much of a problem. Everything is enclosed now and it’s all done through pumping, nothing is on the pad in the open air, so once the slurry gets into these tanks it’s all in the enclosed sys tem. We’ve had a great relationship with our neighbours.”

“There is zero value to do that,” said Mauchlen of process ing digestate into dried fertilizer, adding the liquid output material is now bouringpliedfriendlyenvironmentallyandcanbeapdirectlytoneighfarmers’fields.“Wegetahighval

“We have invested an amount equal to the original acquisition cost with respect to equipment upgrades, compliance require

“The control system was very bare bones. It was really just a moni toring system. It didn’t do anything automati cally. That is another area we did a lot of work on, automat ing the entire process to make things run smoothly,” said Huang.

“We had to set it up to be successful. We needed all new equipment on the front end to make the fa cility successful be cause without the right equipment it would never have worked well. Now we are set for success,” Mauchlen said.

“We had to demol ish one tank. It was not the right concrete and it was showing rebar already. We had to put in a new tank to facilitate all of our in put material, which is liquid. That’s why we decided to build three of these tanks and decommission the equip ment that was here. It was built for solid in put material, which is very inconsistent,” said Huang, noting each tank goes 20 feet deep into the ground with a

Because this is a biological pro cess, you want to feed it slow and steady all day long, 24/7. You don’t want to stop.”

From the deal clos ing in October 2019 it was about 18 months to overhaul the site.

“We restarted it in December 2020 and by March 2021 it was running at 100 per cent capacity. It was about a year-and-a-half from taking it over to getting it running as it should,” said Miller Waste’s An drew Mauchlen, man ager of organics.

And the key to making their new system operate consistently and at a high efficien cy is the “slurry” input material made in large

It was a night mare. The pond was filled with grape pom ace. It was literally purple when we first got here, but cleaning these tanks out was a big job,” said Huang.

Miller Waste oper ates a facility in Pick ering which generates the slurry mixture and supplies the Grimsby site.By shifting to the liq uid format, the Sobye Road operation was able to get fully away from one of the real weaknesses in the pre vious system’s opera tional plan, the solidsbased input material.

“The experience was nothing like you would expect. I took them on a tour of the mural piece, which il lustrated five centuries of the Mon archy’s history - both French and British - in Canada. They were warm and kind. Her Majesty was very nice noting she thought the work was ‘marvelous’ and had ‘beautiful de tail’,” noted Romagnoli.

My Auntie Joyce, she was my Dad’s only sibling. Her and my Uncle Don helped out a lot when my Dad died. Our family frac tured into pieces and my brother went and stayed with them for quite a stretch at one point as we scrambled just to get into survival mode.

To be fair, we also have council candidates Nick DiFlavio and Joanne Johnston who sat on the previous council, so feel free to ask them their thoughts on the whole affair as well, but Dunstall, as some may recall, was a head cheer leader late in 2018 when the bio came up on a council agenda where he lauded the project and the management team’s efforts, complete with a “you’re pioneers” exclama tion. Pioneers, indeed. Pioneers in that management blazed a trail blowing about $19 million at its peak before about half was recouped via the sale when most thought they would be lucky to get $1 million for the entire lot.

It’s been a pretty dark week.Yes, Queen Elizabeth’s passing has enthralled the world but my issues go well beyond that.

Simply, every component of the site had to be upgraded or completely rebuilt just to get it up to Ministry of the En vironment standards or operationally dependable.

Because her greatness passes with her - and no, there will never be an other like her - that is not reason to say, “ok, let’s trash the monarchy right now.” Let’s just leave it where it is. It is part of this country’s history and should remain so, even with any perceived warts.

Our Team: Publisher - Mike Williscraft 289-442-4244mike@wn3.ca

She was a sweet and generous person, just like my Grandma Williscraft, who lived to be 104. Auntie Joyce got into her 80s.

fortunately), “Oh no, she may have received an obit!”The answer I got to my inquiry was most unexpected as we had received an obit for the Hipkins’ daughter, Maya. Maya died from a pul monary embolism last Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the age of QueenDamn!46.Elizabeth lived a long and stellar life overdelivering at key times in history at every turn. The one thing I wish for her is that all those people who think that people of today should somehow pay in blood for past issues of the past – whether it be horrible atrocities or simply an act or comment someone does not like when set in today’s norms – as thought that person of today did something themselves.Whenyou look at Queen Elizabeth’s record beginning to end, any world leader would be en vious of her performance.

Depth of biodigester water revealed

A tour of the wholly revamped site and a lengthy inter view with two men who know exactly what they are doing and can speak eloquently to every aspect of the physical plant and its operating system revealed just how much had to be done to make the facility suitably operational.

I will swing back around to the queen, but I also had my last aunt or uncle, my Auntie Joyce pass away on Monday. Her situation was merciful in the end as her death was quite rapid - after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis just over two months ago followed just a couple of weeks later by inoperable cancer throughout her vital organs. After that second finding, things progressed rapidly.

What a colossal financial bullet the Town of Grimsby dodged when a group of local residents executed stewardship, inventory completion and ultimately the sale of the money burning incinerator known as the Sobye Road biodigester.

When one has lengthy, full lives held right up to a mirror of a shocking and sudden passing it is even more stark. Our condo lences and prayers go out to the entire Hipkin family.

As a result, our of fice will be closed either Thursday or Friday this week, not sure yet, as fu neral arrangements were not set out at press time.

My first thought was one of them must have called and left a voicemail as chances were slim they would email Catherine directly and not cc me on something and I knew they had not stopped in or I would have heard them. That was all in a split second of thought, then I thought (as I have done many times before un

With all that, I feel crushed for the Hipkins. They are among the nic est people I know in town and have helped me in countless ways. Several times I ran into their kids while dropping Grimsby News copy off to Marg at their home as she volun teered to proofread my newspaper copy for many years. I was leaving paper clipped stories at their door at all hours of the day and night.

Halfway through the day, we get an obituary notice in the office and Catherine says to me, “Don’t you know Marg and Ken Hipkin?”

Time for the accountability piper to pay up. M.W.

That thing was an economic tragedy waiting to happen right from the first time it was even considered and all the worst-case scenarios proved last week to be true BUT were all avoided with the October 2019 sale to Miller Waste.

This is important to know as we are currently in an elec tion campaign. One incumbent candidate remains from the 2014-2018 council which sat on its hands and watched millions upon millions of dollars burn in wasted investment and operation deficits. That would be mayoral candidate John Dunstall.
