Successful bounce back
Shanan Cunnington of Guelph was a happy customer of charter Wayzgoose vendor Tony Crowle of Van Huizen Bookbinding & Finishing at Saturday’s 45th annual event at Grimsby Public Art Gallery. With over 1,000 attending the first full event since 2019, GPAG curator Alexandra Hartstone said it could not have gone better. “As well, our 2023 anthology was bound and available this year, so folks who weren’t able to visit us that day can stop by the gallery and take home a memento of this momentous day.” Williscraft - Photo

WLMH one-year update gives glimpse of future
By Mike Williscraft NewsNow
Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) provided a glimpse of the future as part of a oneyear review of work on
West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s rebuild process.
Last week, HHS provided updates and site photos of work completed since the
groundbreaking in April 2022.
“It’s been a busy year,” said Kelly Campbell, HHS vicepresident corporate services and capital
development in an online release.
“From the moment the contract with our build partner (EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare) was signed,
crews started working to prepare the site for construction. The site has been bustling with activity every day since.”
She noted there
were several aspects of site preparation and pre-construction projects which needed to be completed before work on the actual

The Family
The Nelles families were prominent in the building of Upper Canada and the eventual development of Canada as a nation. Their combination of political, community and military service are almost without equal.
Robert Nelles served four times in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada in some of the first legislative sessions of this country. He and his family served as military officers, Magistrates, Town wardens, Justice of the Peace and clerks in the early community offices. Robert Nelles was a Colonel in the 4th Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812.
While The Manor is certainly tighly linked to Canada’s military origins, the Nelles Family was also a power of commerce and trade
The Family fought with the British and their Indigenous allies in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the 1865 insurrection and the Fenian Raids. Their properties were occupied several times by both British and American troops during the War of 1812. The Family fought and lived alongside the Indigenous people in Upper Canada maintaining long-term relationships with them.
As an independent Museum whose annual operations are not funded by government, your support is important to ensure this valuable historic site remains as a part of our heritage.

BUILD
From Page 1 new WMLH building could get started.
The release noted activity ramped up in the early fall. More and more trades reported to the site daily, working on the future build and finalizing access routes for construction vehicles while updating some operational elements of the existing hospital, like the existing emergency department ramp. The year ended off with the tower crane installation.
“WLMH is a pretty tight site which can cre ate challenges to main tain hospital operations while construction is going on. Lots of plan ning, energy and atten tion to detail have been required to ensure that first and foremost, pa tients and patient trans
sition, like ramping up and ramping down and in what sequence. For example, once we have the all clear to move in, Security and Facilities teams will move in first dures and infrastructure. Our detailed planning
will drill into when other support services move in; all in preparation to support the patient move-in day and balance patient services on site,“ said Jennifer Robinson, project manager at HHS leading operational planning.

Marry the house, and date the rate!
It’s been a few years since I’ve heard this clever, witty adage used by some real estate salespeople, but it has resurfaced, which makes sense, as it’s more likely to be said in periods of higher mortgage rates.
It’s message: Don’t let possibly larger-than budgeted-for mortgage payments affect your dream-home purchase plan. We assume that the higher rate is only a temporary challenge to endure. Approach your plan to invest in this home like you’d approach a marriage - as a long-term commitment. Buy the home now that you want to raise a family in, grow old in.
And your mortgage rate? Well, given that long-term mortgage rates are in the mid-to-high five percent range today, to follow the adage would mean to go short on the term. Sign for a short-term mortgage commitment - kind of like a one-year courtship! Go short on your financing now, with the plan to refinance once rates come back down. Your interest rate today is not your forever rate. You’re only dating this rate!
Here’s the thing: We don’t know that mortgage rates will come down to something that will translate into an affordable payment for you. Any rate prediction is just that - a prediction! But, in the meantime, how many months are you willing to endure financial hardship?
It’s expensive to get into a home, but it’s even more expensive to get out of a home. Call me before you buy. Get a professional like myself on your side, who will look out for your best interest!

The Corporation of the Town of Grimsby is pleased to announce a new governance structure implemented as of May 1, 2023
The 2022-2026 term of Council began in November 2022, and at that time, members of Council expressed their wishes to implement a Standing Committee model of governance. Staff and Council have worked together to create the necessary changes to implement this new model, which begins May 1, 2023.
The new Standing Committee governance model includes the following committees that will include representation of up to three (3) members of the community, and up to four (4) members of Council:
• Community Services Standing Committee – This committee will oversee the activities of the Town’s Community Services Department and will include matters pertaining to parks, trails, open space, facilities, recreation, and culture.
• Finance Standing Committee – This committee will oversee the activities of the Town’s Finance Department, including procurement, annual user fees, audits, claims, and any other matters that may require committee consideration.
• Planning and Development Committee –This committee will oversee the activities of Planning, Development, Heritage, and Building, as well as any other matters that may require committee consideration. (The Planning Open House and Statutory Meetings will continue with participation of members of Council as required).
• Public Works Standing Committee – This committee will oversee the activities of the Town’s Operations Department (roads and water), Engineering, and the Town’s Asset Management Plan, as well as any other matters that may require committee consideration.
The following Committees do not have community member representation:
• Budget Committee of the Whole – This committee will oversee and consider the annual budget, as well as make recommendations on matters relating to the financial management of the municipality. The committee will consist of all members of Council.
• Corporate Services Standing Committee – This committee will oversee Legal, Clerks, Human Resources, By-laws, IT, Fire Services, and CAO matters.
In addition, Council added the following new Advisory Committees that will support the Standing Committees and Council. These Committees are the Age Friendly Advisory Committee, the Culture Advisory Committee, and the Public Works Advisory Committee.
Council meetings will remain the first and third Monday of each month. Please check our website for the summer meeting schedule.
As per their 2023-2026 Strategic Priorities, Council is dedicated to ensuring that all Grimsby residents have meaningful opportunities to engage in their municipality and community.
Mayor Jordan said, “During our campaigns, we heard loudly from residents that they were unhappy with the Committee of the Whole governance structure. Our Council is dedicated to making the governance structure transition to ensure we provide meaningful opportunities for our residents to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. It is the intention of Council to be as open and transparent with the community as possible, and we hope that this governance structure change will be a great first step towards that goal”. Mayor Jordan continued, “Thank-you to Staff for making this transition possible, and for all the hard work you have done behind the scenes to make this happen”.
All Standing Committees will be livestreamed.
Agendas, minutes, and information from each meeting can be found on the Town’s website. Thank-you to all members of the community who took the time to attend the Board and Committee Open House and expressed an interest in participating.
The new Standing Committee governance structure began May 1, 2023.

Luc DiFlavio: Running toward the future
By Ben Baldasaro For NewsNow
Sometimes people become devoted to an activity they’ve pursued from a very young age.
On occasion, however, something totally unexpected can nudge one down a road with spectacular results.
Such is the case for Blessed Trinity student Luc DiFlavio, who was bored and getting out of shape during COVID before he started running - and kept running.
“My name’s Luc and I like running,” said Luc as he introduced himself.
“I started running during COVID, over the March Break on a Flor-
ida trip, and I carried it on. I’ve had a running streak for three years now.”
Luc, 17, has always participated in athletics. He’s played basketball and swims for the Blessed Trinity swim team, but nothing captured his imagination quite like running.
His self-taught running career began out of a desire to get healthier, but quickly evolved into something much more than exercise.
“I was a bit unfit, and I needed to be fit for most of the sports I played. I looked for ways to get healthy and exercise, so I started running. Eventually, I just started loving it.”
Luc has trained diligently over the last three years, running day in and day out. He typically runs about 1012 km per day, rain or shine, and even heavy snow. I was doing high
knees,” he joked, recalling a time he ran after a heavy snowfall.
Luc runs cross country for BT and last year led the team to an overall points lead.
“He was a surprise runner, a welcome surprise,” says coach Antonio Gambale.
“Last year was his first year out, running for senior boys. They placed fourth overall at OFSAA, the best they’d ever done, even beating the powerhouse running team from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.”
“Luc was definitely an important component in how we achieved that victory.”
Though barely missing qualification for OFSAA this year, Luc’s personal time of 21:21:1 was good enough for 11th place.
With the senior boys, Luc also helped lead the team to an overall points lead at NCAA this year, coming in first for Men’s 6K, with a time of 22:23:2.
His hard work paid off, earning a full-ride scholarship at Niagara University in Lewiston, New York .
“When I first started, I didn’t expect to get a scholarship for it. Last year I trained really hard, sometimes I was pushing 16 kilometres a day,” he said.
“Most of the time, people who get scholarships have lifelong coaches, but most of my running experience is self-taught. Once I started reaching out and people were interested, I was very surprised that someone like me could get a scholarship,” said Luc.
Gambale was not surprised.
“We typically run the seniors the longest during practice, 3-4 times a week. Sometimes, if Luc wasn’t satisfied with his run at school, he would go home and do another run. Sometimes he would come to practise sore from all of the extra running. It was hard, but I think that speaks to his perseverance.”
Luc faced many challenges in order to get to where he is now, the biggest of which was injury.
“Because of my running streak, I didn’t want to stop because of injuries. I guess I pushed myself through those injuries, but I may have made them worse,” he noted.
Luc mentioned he struggled with a foot condition known as
Freiberg’s disease, which can inhibit movement in the foot.
“It’s something with my toe and my bone, so I can’t bend my foot properly. Every time I run now it hurts, but I’ve gotten orthotics and I eventually got past it,” Luc noted.
Gambale recalled a time where Luc was sick on race day.
“I remember he was lying in the grass, all feverish and sweaty. He had a cold and he was feeling it. Despite that, he knew he had to run in order for the team to progress, so he got up and ran,” Gambale remembered.
Despite some setbacks, Luc remains positive about his running career.
“I love the feeling after I run, like I’ve accomplished something. Once you run 10 kilometres you say to yourself ‘wow, that’s incredible’. Running at university has been a dream since I started. I guess the goal is to get better as I go,” he said.
“The competition at university is very difficult. It’s a lot harder than high school. Obviously, the goal is to get first, but that’s a hard thing to achieve.”
Luc, along with running, swimming, and playing basketball, also serves as student council president at Blessed Trinity. He’s signed to Niagara University, where he will be studying biology with a concentration in dentistry in September.

Historic Coronation this Saturday
The United Kingdom and other countries around the world will be excitedly celebrating Saturday’s big event, the Coronation of King Charles III!
The event is said to be slightly more austere than our last coronation, but nevertheless, it will be something memorable to witness.
It’s 70 years since we had a coronation, and it’s bound to be widely covered in the media.
While not everyone loves the monarchy these days, it’s still a spectacle we have to watch.
Ontario will be celebrating with a ceremony at Queen’s Park with Lieutenant-Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Doug Ford and Indigenous leaders, followed by
A Small Drop of Ink
By Dorothy Turcotte
A Fun Royal Fair on the south lawn.
All provincial cultural places (Ontario Art Gallery, the Science Centre, the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory, 39 provincial parks) will be offering free admission that day.
Prime Minister Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau will be attending the coronation.
King Charles’ coronation will be the 39th held in Westminster Abbey since 1066!
Also, he will be the oldest monarch ever crowned - 73 years, 9 months and 23 days.
The next oldest king was William IV, who was 64 when
he was crowned on Sept. 8th, 1831.
The youngest king was Henry V who was 8 months, 26 days old when he ascended to the throne in 1422, although he was not crowned until seven years later.
Jennifer Scott of Grimsby was born on May 6th, 1935.
She has a family heirloom to be proud of. It is a silver mug, presented to all English babies born that day.
It is engraved with her name - Jennifer Ann Williams - and the date, in commemoration of the accession (not the coronation) of King George V and Queen Mary, King Charles’ greatgrandparents.
This week, Jen was busy polishing up her treasure.

Safety tips from Grimsby Fire
How to handle lithium batteries, CO2 detectors and more will be part of the message served up by Grimsby Fire Department at Community Safety Day, May 13 at the Peach King Centre.
The event will feature important safety information for residents of all ages, with a focus on lithium-ion battery safety and the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in many household items, including cell phones, laptops, and other portable electronic devices. While these batteries are generally safe, they can pose a risk of fire or explosion if they are damaged, overheated, or not used correctly.
In addition, firefighters will emphasize the importance of having working smoke and carbon monox-
ide alarms in your home.
“Community Safety Day is an important opportunity for us to share important safety information with our community. We want to make sure that residents know how to stay safe in their homes and that they have the resources they need to do so,” said fire prevention officer Scott Campbell.
The event will feature a variety of activities for all ages. Attendees can to speak with fire department personnel, learn about fire safety equipment, and take home important safety information.
Follow the Town’s social media for daily posts May 7-13 for ways you can plan for emergencies; Make a Plan, Build a Kit, Stay Informed.
Community Safety Day is open to all residents and is free to attend. We hope to see you there!

Notice of Study Commencement Grimsby Water Treatment Plant Expansion Municipal Class Environmental Assessment
Town of Grimsby
Niagara Region has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment for the expansion of the Grimsby Water Treatment Plant to service future growth. The Grimsby Water Treatment Plant is located at 300 North Service Rd. in Grimsby along the Lake Ontario shoreline, and supplies water to the Town of Grimsby, the Town of Lincoln, and the Township of West Lincoln.
The proposed study area is within the existing Niagara Region property surrounding the existing plant as illustrated in the figure.
Niagara Region is completing this study to identify a preferred solution for expansion of the Grimsby Water Treatment Plant. The expansion will provide increased water capacity throughout the distribution area up to 2051. The preferred solution will:
• Support service area growth to 2051 while considering opportunities for operational flexibility and redundancy
• Provide resiliency to potential future changes to regulatory, climatic, and raw water quality conditions
• Balance environmental, social, technical, and economical considerations
This project will also consider increasing the high lift pumping capacity to support the recently constructed Grimsby Parkridge Reservoir. The project is being completed as a Schedule “C” project in accordance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (October 2000, amended in 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2023), which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.
The study will address the requirements of Phases 1 to 4 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process.
Consultation with the public, Indigenous Communities, regulatory agencies, and stakeholder groups is a key element of a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment study. To facilitate this, two Public Information Centres are planned over the course of the study to gather input on potential alternative solutions and designs and provide an opportunity to discuss concerns and issues with the project team.
Notification of the Public Information Centre will be advertised in the local newspapers and at niagararegion.ca/projects/grimsby-watertreatment-plant
Upon completion of the study, a Project File Report documenting the study process will be prepared and made available for public review and comment. Anyone who wishes to comment on or to be involved in this study should indicate their interest, preferably in writing to the following:

NewsNow ready for Year XII
Every once in a while I point this out, just in case you were wondering, good reader, what that little odometer of sorts is on the front page just below the date of the week’s edition.
This week is
Vol. 11 - Issue 52
That mean the 52nd week in the 11th year of operation. So, doing the math, that means what you are reading puts a wrap on our 11th year here at NewsNow.
It has been a downright madcap ride - at times - but one I would never and do not regret.
It has been noted several times in this space....while the mortality rate of newspaper start-ups, even in the glory days, was 95 per cent failure, somehow I’ve stickhandled my way through two successful start-ups in Niagara West.
Keys to that?
Absolutely superior staff, dedicated readers, extremely supportive advertisers and an immense amount of luck.
I appreciate all it.
Next week will launch our 12th year and we’ve got some new features we’ll be rolling out, some in print, some in the digital space. The ride continues. * * * * * * *
Wayzgoose acquisition
Suzi Dwor of Port Colborne made the trip to Grimsby for last Saturday’s 45th annual Wayzgoose event at Grimsby Public Art Gallery. She was looking to make a purchase from Burlington-based artist Beverly Allen. In its first full year since 2019 the event drew more than 1,000 visitors over the day. Williscraft - Photo
Well, look at that - 12.6 per cent wage increase for federal Public Service Alliance of Canada striking workers, who the government opted to pay WHILE they were on strike.
Ridiculous.
At some point people, those who do not live off the government teat will
have to stand up and sayif we want to have all these social programs, health care, green initiatives and more, government of all levels cannot afford to silver plate the lifestyle of workers.
And no, I am not talking about the low-end payscale staff. In fact, anyone in the $40,000 range should have their wage brought up to a minimum (level negotiated) as done in pro sports.
It is the top end which should be trimmed back to offset these costs and, of course, teachers are included in this mix.
Part of that remuneration which needs to be dealt with is the juicy benefits packages many receive, not their rate of pay.
Government-paid workers, who have never worked in the real world, have absolutely no perspective of what a luxury their “guaranteed” pay, benefits and salary level is.
When you see some of these picket line comments about how hard done by they are, it boggles to realize they live in the same
country. You’d think they are living in an oppressed society for Pete’s sake.
Now, the bar is set far too high. The next union will line up an say, “look, our friends over there got 12.6. We want that as a minimum.”
But they’ll start at 19-20 per cent, threaten or go on strike again, and end up getting what they want while they hold the rest of society ransom.
The government will raise taxes to try to recoup paying funds they clearly cannot afford to pay while running what is already a massive budget deficit. Rinse and repeat. * * *
A little note here for Marge who lives up on Westbrook Road. Like many, Marge does not have a cell phone and does nothing digital. She needed directions to Grimsby Public Library at 18 Carnegie Lane for a meeting planned there.
So Marge, from Woolverton and Hwy. 8:
• turn right and stay straight to the first traffic light (Mountain St.)
• Turn left on Mountain and stay straight going through the light at Main St.
• Turn right at the first traffic light (Clarke St.) up the hill;
• The very next corner is Elizabeth St, turn right;
• Go under the rail tracks and make an immediate left on Carnegie Lane, the library parking lot will be about 100 yards down on the right.

WL council should consider home building means
Dear Editor,
Referring to the article in NewsNow on April 20, 2023 where the West Lincoln town council rejected a brownfield remediation grant requested by DeHaan Homes for $1.5 million: I was pleased to read the request was turned down but not by the entire elected council.
I doubt very much, if the homes were built, the developer would
have passed down his savings to the buyers if DeHaan received the grant money.
Perhaps the council should have explored other means to help the developer seeing most elected council members ran on a platform to help out and address the housing crisis - maybe reduc-
ing the over-inflated development charges and other local fees for starters.
Furthermore, what perplexed me was the statement said by Coun. Joann Chechalk. She indicated that farmers who had bought land along the track also had kreosote contamination and dealt with the issues themselves with no grants. She indicated the farmers cleaned
Using logic, Poilievre wrong on CBC
Dear Editor,
So the “logic” says that since the CBC is government funded, they support the head of the government, which is currently the Liberals and Justin Trudeau.
That must also mean that when Stephen Harper and Brain Mulroney were in the Prime Ministers’ office, they must also have enjoyed the support of the CBC - “logic” says so. (I don’t recall a big controversy at the time about this, but maybe I just missed all of that talk). Pierre Poilievre intends
to shut down the CBC if elected as Prime Minister, but by using “logic” he would be mistaken to do so, because as the head of the government, the CBC would be supporting him because they are government funded. Or is this “logic” flawed?
For the record, I am not a Liberal supporter - there is no way I would vote for the melodramatic baby-kisser that currently leads that party.

up the land all the way from Smithville to Dunville.
These statements to me are questionable and I would be surprised if the cleanup was done by licensed contractors along the entire length of the rail line.
I once worked for a licensed contractor who specialized in contaminated soil remediation. I know it is very expensive to clean up contaminated sites.
The charge of handling the soil itself, transporting it to a government regulated disposal site was by the cubic meter plus all the before and after site testing charges.
Hoping all the cleanup the councillor referred to was done appropriately because it looks like it was a very big job.

Dear Editor,
How deep down the QAnon rabbit hole does one have to dive to in order to convince yourself that the CBC is a propaganda tool of the government?
What factual verified evidence has one researched and analyzed, that would stand up in a court of law, to support a claim that CBC is now “government controlled”?
If one were to “follow the money” as one writer suggested where would one start? Infowars, Fox News or Pierre Poilievre’s Bitcoin account as a starting point for that “hush money, bribes”?
Was the CBC also colluding with the right wing Harper government from 2006-2015 when he appointed people to the CBC board? Were they now controlling the message?
Anyone accusing the CBC of bias without providing a shred of evidence shows, at best, a lack of understanding of why the CBC was created in 1929 to combat the growing influence of American radio on Canadian airwaves and at worst, peddling a political attack on the CBC to shore up someone’s political career.
Canadian tax dollars provide the funding for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the programming is intended for, as its mandate requires, a Canadian audience coast to coast to coast.
I’ll gladly leave the gun violence “drama” TV shows and MMA cage fight brutality to the American commercial networks for those who feed on it.
For the rest of us, hands off the CBC, a Canadian institution well worth continued funding.
