“We woke up and it was war”

Ukrainian refugee family attempts to start anew in Niagara By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Ontario has a provincial election campaign underway and municipal elections pending this fall. Anyone who has flipped through social media or pages of a newspaper will have come across a lot of complaining about a host of items which are either areas of concern or matters which raise residents’ ire. For Serhiy Voloshyn and his wife, Anastasiia, Ontario is looking just fine to them. The couple arrived in Canada about two weeks ago - leaving their home and all their possessions behind in now-war-torn Kharkiv, Ukraine. “We didn’t see, we heard. The rockets were all around. It started at about 5 a.m. We opened our eyes and knew it was war,” recalled Serhiy, while seated in the serene backyard of Wayne and Jill Willis of Grimsby. “Nobody thought the Russians would attack. Nobody in Kharkiv expected war like this. It was really quick, really strange.” See HIDE, Page 9

MPP hopefuls mix it up at all-candidates night By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Six candidates vying for Niagara West’s seat at Queen’s Park in the June 2 provincial election took the stage at Great Lakes Christian High School for an allcandidates debate jointly hosted by the area’s three chambers of commerce. On hand to debate the issues of the day were candidates: Chris Arnew, New Blue Ontario; Dave Augustyn, New Democrat-

ic Party; Dan Dale, Ontario Party; Doug Joyner, Liberal Party; Sam Oosterhoff, Progressive Conservative Party, and; Jim Torma, Populist Party of Ontario. Absent from the debate were Laura Garner, Green Party and Stefanos Karatopis, Libertarian Party. In opening remarks, Arnew said the province needs change to overcome recent economic issues. “You’ll get zero change with any of the

three legacy parties, each of whom make promises with less commitment than most of us apply to our New Year’s Eve fitness and nutrition goals,” said Arnew. For Augustyn, COVID-magnified issues such as inflation and a shortage of government supports are nothing new. “(Problems) stretch back years and years. We can’t go back. As we finally leave the pandemic, we can’t go back to See DEBATE, Page 18
