Beamsville man faces attempted murder charge

A Beamsville man is facing an attempted murder charge after an incident in Grimsby’s Plum Tree Lane neighbourhood.

On Saturday about 12:45 p.m., a 9-1-1 call to the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) was made by a witness, who said a fight was occurring between two men in

front of a residential address.

Upon arrival, officers assigned to 8 District, which covers Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln, located a 41-year-old female

victim suffering from serious injuries consistent with having been stabbed with a knife, say police.

Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramed-

ics responded alongside members of the Grimsby Fire Department, who provided life-saving measures to the victim, who was ultimately transported to an out-of-town

trauma centre for advanced medical care.

The victim remains in hospital listed in serious but stable condition.

The two men fighting

From Page 1 were determined to have been the suspect and a good Samaritan who heard the attack and came to the victim’s aid, said police. The suspect was taken into custody by responding officers.

Detectives assigned to the 8 District Criminal Investigative Branch have assumed carriage of the in-

vestigation. They are being supported by detectives assigned to the Forensic Services Unit. It has been determined the suspect and victim were known to one another.

Allan Timko, 70, of Beamsville has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Timko was held for a bail hearing and attended via video link on Monday. He

was remanded into the custody of Ontario Correctional Services.

Members of the public who wish to provide information anonymously are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers of Niagara online or by calling 1-800-222TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards to persons who contact the program with information that leads to an arrest.

An introduction to second mortgages.

A second mortgage is designed to be a short-term solution for a homeowner, typically taken for 12 to 24 months.

A second mortgage may appeal to a homeowner who cannot get approved to borrow additional funds with their current mortgage provider, or their daily-banking financial institution. Some examples of why a homeowner might take a second mortgage include:

-to consolidate higher-interest debt, such as credit card balances

-to pay property tax and/or income tax arrears

-to fund a renovation or home repair

-to provide a cash downpayment on an investment property, or vacation home

Second mortgage interest rates are typically higher than first-mortgage rates, and there are usually arrangement fees to pay, such as house appraisal fees, lender fees, broker fees, and the lender’s legal fees.

Many borrowers make the grave mistake of overlooking - or simply not understanding, the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) when reading the second mortgage paperwork. The APR is more than the contract rate of the mortgage: The APR is the interest cost, PLUS all the non-interest costs paid by the borrower to obtain that mortgage. The APR is expressed as a percentage of the average mortgage balance over the term of the mortgage.

For example, if a homeowner takes a second mortgage with a contract interest rate of 8%, and once all the arrangement fees are accounted for, the second mortgage APR is 39%, is this a smart move? It depends, as everyone’s situation is unique! For more information, or for your complimentary mortgage review, please call me.Talk to us. You’ll be impressed!

Rerouting health care money wrong path: Turcotte

In December 1958, our four-year-old son came out of the hospital for the last time.

He had suffered frequently from severe asthma.

Our insurance coverage had long ago run out. We owed the hospital $11,000, a lot of money in 1958.

On Jan. 1, 1959, OHIP

A Small Drop of Ink

came into effect. We were so grateful that no more would be added to our debt! OHIP was a boon to all Ontarians.

Now Premier Doug Ford wants to take a step toward for-profit privatization of our public healthcare system.

We already have private x-ray, ultrasound and colonoscopy clinics which allow quicker appointments than would be possible in publicly funded hospitals. Mr. Ford wants to extend that to include clinics to do surgeries and more advanced diagnostics. This will take money away from our public

healthcare system and funnel it to commercial interests that will have no oversight to guarantee the safety and integrity of their services.

Healthcare professionals in Ontario are appalled, and so should we be. Bill 60 authorizing this passed on May 8, 2023, but you can still register your displeasure.

If you believe that this is not the right way for Ontario to proceed with healthcare, please vote in the citizen-run vote to protest this blatant disregard for public opinion.

You can vote in just a few moments at: publichospitalvote.ca

You can vote in person at one of the local sites manned by volunteers

this weekend, too. They are:

• Outside of Shear Image Salon, 155 Main St. E., Grimsby (Meridian Plaza) - Friday, May 26 9:30-5 and May 27, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

• Special Effects Picture Framing (beside Food Basics) 63 Main St. W., Grimsby - Friday May 26 9:00 -- 5:00 and Saturday May 27 9:00 -- 3:00

• Livingston Activity Centre, library room

-- (between Shopper’s Drug Mart & Central School) 18 Livingston Ave. - Friday, May 26 Noon-6 p.m.

Let Doug Ford know that by electing him, you did not give him a blank cheque to dismantle our healthcare system. Be sure to vote!

Our family treasure passed away peacefully surrounded by our love at McNally House Hospice in Grimsby on Friday, May 5, 2023 in her 98th year. Olive was predeceased by her Father William (1959) and Mother Amy (1972). She was the beloved wife of the late Harry Thompson (1999). Proud, loving and devoted mother of David (Joanne) Thompson and Jane Thompson. Cherished grandmother of Michael-Oliver, Nolan and Julianna. Predeceased by her grandson Connor (2003) and by her sisters Betty (1968) and Margaret (2003) Olive was the youngest of the three sisters. Forever remembered and loved by Anne and Nick Hutton, Rosie and Rod Campbell-Blair and their extended families abroad. Olive and Harry both served in WWII. Olive served as a WREN (Women’s Royal Naval Service) and Harry was in the Royal Navy. After the war ended they married and moved to Canada to start their lives together. They settled and worked in Toronto and spent holiday time canoeing in Algonquin Park as proud new Canadians. They soon moved to Oakville and started raising David and Jane then relocated to St. Catharines in 1967 and eventually settled on Willowdale Ave in Old Glenridge. Olive stripped walls, wallpapered and painted most of the house singlehanded, took care of the two of us, as many as three black labs at a time, and helped Harry run the family business Cottman Transmission. She stayed at that home and cared for it until 2005 and then moved to Grimsby to be closer to family. Olive was known for her long walks with the dogs and later, on her own, well into her 90’s. She was a great cook and baker. She loved dark chocolate, an occasional glass of white wine, F1 Racing, knitting and most importantly being a Mother and Grandmother. She was truly amazing. We will all miss her dearly. In keeping with Olive’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place at St. George’s Church Columbarium in St. Catharines. The Thompson family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and volunteers at McNally Hospice for their incredible compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the McNally House Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Please share your condolences online at www.hulseandenglish.com.

BIVAND, Craig Anthony

We lost a wonderful soul on May 5, 2023. Craig Will be missed by his wife, Diane, son, Albert, father, Don, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Craig is predeceased by his mother, Janice, with whom he had a special relationship. He also had a soft spot in his heart for Grandma C, Grandma B and Aunt Florence.

His family is very proud of the person he was and all that he accomplished in his full but short life. His big heart and generosity of spirit led him to many years of community service. He started FORT and remained committed to this youth center for over twenty years. He was involved in the provincial and federal Conservative Party, organized Rotary golf tournaments, and assisted the Belarus children. He also organized whitewater rafting tours which gave many young people life-long memories. He gave so much to so many for so long.

Craig was a wonderful husband who was all one could wish for a partner - supportive, caring, and full of creative ideas and surprises. Diane admired his passion for life and his ability to expand the travel experience to the ultimate. She was left with a tremendous number of incredible stories to savour over the years.

Craig’s many friends describe him as the most generous and unselfish man they have every met and who would literally give you the shirt off his back. His zest for life can be characterized in many ways but suffice to say his gregarious, loud and infectious deep laugh was his trademark. Craig was intellectual and opinionated and, as a reader on so many subjects, could substantiate his beliefs. His friends can still see and hear him singing My Way by either Frank Sinatra or the Sex Pistols while driving his Dad’s riding lawn mower down to the Grimsby House for a cold beer!

Traveling and scuba diving made him feel complete and satisfied with his free spirit. He has been to 97 countries and was also certified as a master diver. His heart’s desire was to step foot in as many countries as he could. Diane is going to take his ashes to three more countries to fulfill his 2023’s goal of reaching his 100th country. His ultimate dream was to sail around the world with his own catamaran.

In honouring Craig’s wishes, a celebration of the life will be held by his family at a later time. If desired donations to FORT (https://www.thefortyouthcentre.com/donate-online) would be appreciated by the family or simply go out and splurge on yourself or someone you love to treat and think of Craig.

Passing of a FORT friend

It was a sad day in the office last week when we learned of Craig Bivand’s passing. Craig has been a long-time friend, a downtown Grimsby stalwart at his family’s Grimsby Glass and a cornerstone of what became FORT (Foundation of Resources for Teens). He loved his family and his community. He will be sorely missed. M.W

Key among them, why did I use mainly U.S. contentsee “why was I picking on the U.S.”

Now, I prefer to think I was not picking on anyone, rather, simply highlighting high-profile instances of political correctness gone awry.

BUT, there are tons of Canadian examples, too. There was no attempt to overlook or insinuate that Canadians cannot take every opportunity to come up brain dead just like our friends south of the 49th.

Case in point, Kew Beach Junior Public School in Toronto’s Beaches community; the school posted on its message board at the street, “Life does not come with a manual, it comes with a mom” in recognition of Mother’s Day. Somehow, some way, that was deemed politically insensitive by a handful of people. The school board caved and had the sign altered to sooth the uprising.

I guess recognizing moms on Mother’s Day triggers some now.

Then, on a national scale, you’ve got the feds white washing passports by removing religious symbols and historic figures.

Sure, dissolve arguably Canada’s most historic military stand at Vimy Ridge.

And like I noted last week, should the families of those soldiers who died for all of us to have the freedoms we enjoy today get a reparation payments as well for the sacrifice they made at Vimy?

I don’t want to go down the reparations rabbit hole as that is not the point at all. The point is, thousands upon thousands of people have been impacted by mortal danger and varied a trocities over centuries.

It is in the past. It should be learned from or we are doomed to repeat it, but it should stay there...in the past.

The root of many of these incidents comes from a very small minority who strategically drop a pebble in a pond and by the time it works its way across across the body of water it can become a social tidal wave.

This week, you’ve got the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario claiming an uptick in violence in schools is a result of underfunding schools.

The heart of that issue all around is the lack of

This was a crock from the get go, but, as happens, Premier Doug Ford is asked for comment. Like anyone with a parent who maintained a disciplined home with a stern hand, Ford said he would never have considered striking a teacher because he would have gotten it 10 times worse when he got home...and he agreed with that style.

So the conversationwhich should be safety in schools for teaching professionals - devolves into Ford approves of child abuse.

Let me tell you, there is nothing wrong with a little fear to keep a kid on the straight and narrow. And no, nobody would, could or should espouse child abuse, but a “smack bottom” (thanks Shrek) is a great attention getter.

While that is not much of a deterrent for teens, it is the roots of the approach which would flourish by the time a youngster reaches that age so that nothing physical is ever in play and respect is the rudder which keeps a kid on the straight and narrow.

In our house, if Dad went for his belt, you ran for the hills. It sure worked for us.

This is another topic I could go on forever and in the span of a week there is usually 3-4 new instances that pop which just leave me shaking my head. I’m tired of it.
