Townhouse project greenlit

Vineland residents disgruntled By Tristan Marks NewsNow There were not many happy Vineland residents leaving Lincoln’s town hall on Monday after the Planning & Economic Development Committee approved a motion recommending hotly disputed zoning amendments. The amendments are for Solera Place, a proposed

townhouse project to be built between Azalea Crescent and Victoria Avenue in Vineland. This was done despite the misgivings and concerns of many residents who attended and voiced their opposition to the project. The development’s consultants, Better Neighbourhoods, presented a revised

preliminary site plan which was said to address problems raised with the previous plan presented to the committee Feb. 11. However, the residents who spoke during the meeting said their concerns went unresolved and unanswered. They raised several points of contention related to the fact that the proposed plan

only has one route in and out either by vehicle or by foot which connects only to the Azalea Crescent neighbourhood. One of the issues with this design that speakers repeated was that the design did not include required turnaround space for emergency vehicles, which would hinder See SAFETY, Page 3

their ability to enter and exit the site’s single access point. They raised the spectre of a terrible fire which razed a home in that very neighbourhood in 2013. Consultants Kahlin Holmes said, to mitigate this issue, her company added sprinkler systems to the home designs. Fire Chief Greg Hudson agreed with the plan to add a sprinkler system into each home. “Sprinklers would help contain any fires,” he said, adding that this would allow those inhabiting the building to escape with their lives. However, he also concurred that the plan’s fire access route was insufficient. Another concern related to the single

route was the lack of access to nearby Victoria Avenue or Rittenhouse Road. One of the attendees, Alan Wintermute, pointed out that the landlocked nature of this project would pose problems and make travel arduous for seniors or those with disabilities. “To go east, you have to first go west. To go north, you have to first go south,” said Wintermute. However, Holmes said that a pedestrian path to the adjacent Rittenhouse Park could be explored down the line. This could connect to the existing park path that leads to Rittenhouse Road. Other residents argued that the design would fail to meet the town’s Official Plan’s stipulation for developments to respect the character of its surroundings, existing

neighbourhoods. Dr. Mark Castrodale, a resident of Azalea Crescent said building townhouse condominiums in an area surrounded by otherwise single, detached homes would diminish the “quality, character and charm of the neighbourhood.” “I don’t feel it respects the community,” he said. “I see a parking lot, and no one wants to live near a parking lot.” Some of the committee members voiced agreement with their constituents’ concerns. Coun. Lynn Timmers said she saw too many unanswered questions. “I have great concerns over this application,” she said. Still, the committee voted to carry the motion. Town Council will now consider the proposal at its upcoming meeting on May 21.

Why use a Mortgage Broker? A mortgage broker provides you with mortgage solutions that your local bank or credit union cannot offer you. More importantly, a mortgage broker acts as your representative in your mortgage negotiation with these financial institutions and other alternative mortgage providers, so that you don’t have to undertake this oftenstressful encounter. Since the Federal Government introduced the mortgage qualifying stress test, consumers are experiencing disappointment and frustration with the big banks. Alternative lenders have adapted to this restrictive lending environment, by continuing to introduce new mortgage products and innovative underwriting policies. Consumers are still borrowing to buy homes, and homeowners are still refinancing their homes - We are just now relying less and less on the big banks for that financing. An example of how these non-bank, alternative lenders differentiate themselves is in what income types they will consider, such as the inclusion of the Child Tax Benefit, spousal support, investment income, and their unique treatment of self-employment income. These non-bank lenders will also help you resolve challenging circumstances such as the payment of property tax arrears, income tax debt, and the consequences of a separation or divorce. For senior homeowners who no longer qualify for a traditional mortgage, there are alternative equity release solutions that I offer, such as CHIP™ reverse mortgages, and the Manulife One™ borrowing account. If you feel that your financial institution has let you down, I invite you to call me for a complimentary mortgage consultation. I look forward to this opportunity to earn your trust and your business. Thinking “outside the Bank” for a change.

St. Andrew’s Anglican celebrates 225 years By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Many hands have held open the doors of welcome at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. And for more than two centuries the message shared with the Grimsby community has always been the same - Glory to God from generation to generation. Long before the Great Western Railway ran through Grimsby, before the War of 1812, even before the town got its current name, a small log church, a first in the peninsula, was built at The Forty on land given by Col. Robert Nelles who came to Canada during the American Revolution. St. Andrew’s is honouring its 225th anniversary - 1794 to 2019 - and everyone is invited to celebrate the milestone Saturday, May 25, 2-4 p.m. during a ‘Celebratory Tea’ steeped in church history. “I sit in the pews and I reflect on the many people who have been here before and how the church brought that same spiritual blessing to them,” says longtime church member Gwen Medcalf. “To us, as well as them, it’s a feeling of family and love. It’s my family.” May 25 will be a full afternoon with tea and tours and talk of the United Empire Loyalist pioneers who brought their families and their faith - building community and three churches including the 1794 log church replaced by a frame structure in 1804 and the existing picturesque stone church built in 1819. Loyalist Andrew Pettit came to Canada in 1787 and initially led services in his home before the first church was built. He died the year the stone church was built and it is in his honour that the parish is named. After years of waiting for a settled clergyman, The Reverend William Sampson was the first parish priest to serve the community from 1817-1822. He sustained a gunshot wound while hunting. The injury was not properly treated and he died three days following the accident. Buried in the cemetery are many ancestors of the families who founded The Forty, the epitaphs on each headstone a bridge to the past.

“We have suffered together and we have worked hard together and it’s been that way since the foundation of the parish,” said St. Andrew’s rector, The Venerable Max Woolaver. Any tone of suffering turns quickly to celebration as Rev. Woolaver shares the collective joy and activity that fills the parish hall every day. At the moment, there are about 110 regular church attendees, a number that fills the building with as many as 500 during special holidays and events. “We’re doing more than holding our own in a very challenging age. We have to get more in touch with the Gospel that brought us to this place and more importantly, apply the Gospel that we have received to the present moment in which we are living,” Rev. Woolaver said. “We need to emphasize what the church is doing in this community.” God may have rested on the seventh day, but St. Andrew’s

is a hub of activity that fills every day of the week. “We have hundreds of people move through this parish hall on an ordinary week,” Rev. Woolaver said. Sunday services are at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.; Tuesday at 7 p.m., ‘Revive’, a program of spiritual formation, is an intimate, contemplative and restorative experience each week; Wednesday at 7 p.m. is ‘Night Prayers’ a quiet celebration of the Eucharist in an informal way; Thursday at 10 a.m. is Bible study and a celebration of the Eucharist. From a busy preschool program to cancer support, free trade coffee, Girls Guides and euchre games the last Friday of each month, the parish never stops. And St. Andrew’s has become a healing place in its own quiet way with Shiastu therapy,

The community of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church invites all to celebrate the church’s 225th anniversary Saturday, May 25. Outside the picturesque stone church at 154 Main St. W is St. Andrew’s rector The Venerable Max Woolaver and long-time church member Gwen Medcalf. McDonald - Photo

yoga lessons and tai chi instruction. The Right Reverend Susan Bell, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Niagara is the 12th Bishop of Niagara and first woman to serve in the role. The Grimsby church “is also a conduit or a doorway to engage with the complexity of our world. There are lots of folks who want help mother earth, refugees….,” Rev. Woolaver said, citing a few of the good works. From the 1994 Bicentennial ‘A History of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church’ compiled by Alfreda (Bingle) Jeffries: “What a precious possession old St. Andrew’s is to the whole church. Long may it continue to be spared.” The words, penned to the Rector, Rev. George Robert Field Grout in 1946, expressed the sentiments of generations. “There is a grandness, a tragic beauty to life, and we have plenty of moments, especially with our own children, when we recognize the presence of God, even though not all of us would describe these moments as such. We feel that we - all of us - are supposed to be here, that we are part of a bigger story,” quotes Rev. Woolaver, reading from words by Ryan Tahmaseb, parent, teacher, author and editor at Spiritual Parent. “Those words are as meaningful today,” Rev. Woolaver said. Saturday, May 25, the church will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to view a ‘festival of flowers’ the exquisite stained glass windows and the church’s many unique architectural features. There will be an organ recital at 4 p.m. and tours of the cemetery throughout the day. There are $10 packages of stained glass greeting cards commemorating the 225th anniversary available at the church office. Anniversary T-shirts are on presale at $20. St. Andrew’s has also embarked on a music ministry initiative for its 225th year ‘From Here and Bach’ and invites people of all ages to bring their voices, instruments and enthusiasm to enrich their lives together with all forms of music. Tickets are $20, in advance only. Call 905-945-8894.

“Diamond” needs polish: Kadwell

It’s sad that another serious accident in the Grimsby “diamond” just becomes another statistic, but until some additional safety measures are taken, Coun. Dave Kadwell says accidents may be preventable. The diamond - which is the area of QEW on- and off-ramps between Maple and Christie Streets in Grimsby - has been the seen of many accidents over the years. Saturday, May 5, just before 5 p.m. a 2019 Dodge Charger - driven by a 28-year-old man from China - failed to stop at the eastbound stop sign at Maple, colliding with a 2017 Santa Fe driven by a 56-year-old Grimsby man which was southbound on Maple. The driver of the Santa Fe and a passenger were transported to hospital with minor and serious injuries. The driver of the Charger was not injured. The collision also knocked a boat being towed by the Santa Fe free of its trailer. A total of $90,000 in damage was caused to all vehicles. The driver of the Charger was charged with careless driving. Kadwell has been pursuing traffic improvements for this area for more than five years. “What I have asked about is solar powered flashing lights for above the stop signs and rumble strips. it can all be done for a reasonable cost. I don’t understand what the hesitation is when there is such a history to it,” said Kadwell. MPP Sam Oosterhoff, who met with Kadwell Saturday for a walkaround, agreed. By Monday, Oosterhoff had spoken to the Minister of Transportation and followed up. “We’ve had a fatal (accident) a few years ago at Ontario...hopefully nobody else has to die before we get something done,” said Kadwell.

Retirees Eager to Try New Hearing Aid† A new award winning hearing aid is now available for retirees!‡ It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it b cause of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce

the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

Linda Coutts, the museum’s director said Nelles Manor will continue its purpose of preserving and telling the story of Grimsby’s heritage. “It’s now more important than ever to keep that history alive,” she said. “We want to sow the seeds for people to explore the past.” The manor also invites people to visit for the commemoration of the Engagement at the Forty on June 8. The event, which marks one of the battles from the War of 1812 that took place near Grimsby, will feature uniformed re-enactors, a barbecue lunch, museum tours and much more.

Fireworks fun

Grimsby Kinsmen Bruce Bond, Denny Pyatt and Rick Quirk load up the Kinsmen trailer at Village Inn Plaza with fireworks. They will be selling fireworks daily all week - 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. - up to and including Victoria Day Monday. All proceeds will go towards funding Kinsmen community projects. Marks - Photo

Time to polish the diamond Having been at the scenes and written about many of the Grimsby “diamond” traffic accidents over multiple decades, it really is confounding as to why heightened warning measures have never been taken. Yes, enlarged stop signs were installed several years ago and, yes, drivers should obey the rules of the road and simply stop at the big red stop sign. The fact remains, many don’t. This scribe has seen two vehicles blow through stop signs in that area at high speed, one a pickup truck which missed my car by less than 30 feet. Many have not been so fortunate. Coun. Dave Kadwell priced the solar flashing warning lights for above stop signs at $1,500 each a few years ago. Six are needed. That isn’t even a blip in the MTO’s budget. Rumble strips? Again, minimal cost and could be mitigated by flexible scheduling...all in $20,000? Those all could be done for under $30,000. This, while $90K in damages was just caused by one accident, plus the human impacts. It is a tiny investment which can save lives. Let’s get it done. M.W.

Amalgamation will help business only A housekeeping issue, if you will allow me, good reader... I meant to correct a comment in a story we ran May 2 when Tony Joosse was making a presentation at the Grimsby Seniors Club’s AGM regarding the whole West Lincoln Memorial Hospital/ Hamilton Health Sciences situation. Joosse called to clarify that he said, “WLMH as many members of the provincial Cabinet who have ties to the facility.” And that is a good thing and WLMH will need every bit of support and interest from Queen’s Park if it is to have the kind of bright future area residents have been promised many times over. ******* One-tier government - and don’t think that isn’t a first option Premier Ford is waiting to see if he can be talked out of - is a very real, and potentially tragic possibility. First and foremost, if you have any significant feelings on the topic of municipal structure you can go on the government’s website and complete a rinky dink survey or submit your comments online for someone to ignore. https://www.ontario.ca/page/ consultation-regional-government-review We simply don’t rate proper public forums on how we are governed any more it seems. Next Tuesday, May 21, is the deadline which was set out at the start of the fictitious public input process. From everything I have seen and heard everything is being teed up for St. Catharines to get its wish of a one-tier Niagara or, marginally better but still brutal, a four-municipality option. The four-municipality model is purported to be constructed along federal and provincial riding boundary lines. For us peons in Niagara West, this would group

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln with Wainfleet and part of Pelham. Yep, that’s manageable...a quaint little lake-to-lake town...happens all the time... makes total sense. Not! Seeing how this process has been set up, I don’t have an ounce of confidence anything good is going to result for residents in our area. What I do think will transpire is amalgamation will be forced on the citizenry in the name of corporate streamlining not to benefit Niagara’s residents but to benefit the businesses who do business with them - namely developers. It has been shown time and again municipal amalgamations don’t save a dime, so the government cannot hide behind the skirts of that motherhood issue any longer. It does not make things better for residents. That, too, has been shown time and again. What it does is reduce bureaucracy with which businesses deal. It does not save taxpayers money, BUT is saves businesses money and that is why we are going to see our communities, our local history, the fabric of our towns shredded - all for big business. I can smell it. And nothing about this has been subtle.

The only thing surprising is the review did not take on the lightning-strike approach as Ford used with City of Toronto. Now, Toronto has been a foe of Ford’s for a while and, for example, Niagara has not. In particular, Niagara West should be considered the PC’s best friend for its recent election result history. I really don’t think that will matter one iota. The stories I hear of big business interests in St. Catharines hiring a highly connected consultant with ties to Ford’s top administrator should be concerning to all. Even if attentive ears at Queen’s Park were not part of a push for major amalgamations in Niagara, other red flags are scattered about the all-too-internal process. The shoe is going to drop on this quickly and it will only be a matter of just how ugly it is, not just for this area, but for other areas in Niagara, too. There are a host of impacts but a timely one...Lincoln can forget about acquiring BDSS. Not only would a town hall there not be needed, but there would be no appetite in a larger scale municipality to outlay that kind of cash to help with a need for parking in the core. Yes, there would be other benefits, but with no need for a brand new town hall in Lincoln and a boat load of renovations, that endeavour would get chopped. I hope I’m wrong, just like I did on the good ol’ bio, but we all know all too well how that worked out. ******* Bonehead! That’s me. The lightbulb went on that the song “Anticipation” was Carly Simon’s, not Joni Mitchell about an hour after I got home last week. But, the ship had sailed. Yep, I got a ton of emails, calls and texts correcting me and I appreciate every one!

Outdoor Travel breaks ground in Beamsville location they moved to their current location in Hamilton where they have operated their fullservice dealership from a 6,800 sq. ft. facility located on six acres near the Burlington Skyway Bridge since 1998. They’re excited about the major expansion and move to Lincoln. “We’ve outgrown our current facility,” said

owner/general manager Andy Whiting. “This location offers more than twice the space, is close to the highway and has better exposure,” he said. “This is a wonderful area for tourism.” It’s also an exciting new business for town said Mayor Sandra Easton. “The travelling public will be connected to Lincoln and that’s what

By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow If travelling leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller, the Town of Lincoln has a great story to tell. Outdoor Travel is moving to town and Friday broke ground on its new RV recreational dealership set to open for business in the spring of 2020. A 13.5-acre site located on the South Service Road near the QEW/ Ontario St. interchange will be home base for the state-of-the-art 42,000 sq. ft. building that will feature a large indoor showroom with 14 service bays, a parts and accessories department and RV rentals. And best of all, it brings the effusive Whiting family to Town. “You’ve done a great job for us in Lincoln. You are so easy to work with,” Outdoor Travel owner Ken Whiting told Lincoln council and staff gathered for the groundbreaking. Ken and his wife Maureen started the RV business in 1992 with a small dealership in Burlington. Outgrowing that

A Salute to West Lincoln Memmorial Auxiliary’s 75th Anniversary 4.5 X 14

Thanks for tireless efforts To the Auxiliary, It is with sincere gratitude that we recognize a group of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year supporting West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and WLMH Patients. Thank You, WLMH Auxiliary! Auxiliary volunteers logged more than 28,000 volunteer hours in 2018 greeting patients and guests at the front desk, staffing our gift and coffee shop, supporting patient transportation and raising funds for new medical equipment to name a few from a long list of patient and staff support pro-

vided by the Auxiliary. For 75 years the Auxiliary have been quietly working to make the experiences of staff, hospital guests and, most importantly, hospital patients better. On behalf of the WLMH Community Advisory Committee thank you again to the tireless team of volunteers at the WLMH Auxiliary!
