By Mike Williscraft NewsNowYet another Grimsby on The Lake development will go ahead with insufficient parking after an Ontario Land Tribunal decision will permit reduced parking requirements for the twintower development slated to 7 Windward Drive.
The site, the current location of the Casablanca Hotel, will see a 15-storey west tower - which is to include a 50room hotel, 250 condos and retail at grade - and a 25-storey tower on the east side of the lot, which is currently a parking area.

“Yesterday (June 4), Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) advised the mayors of Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln, as well as the regional chair of Niagara, that at this time the hospital is no longer consid-

“Over the past few months, we have worked closely with
the municipalities to engage the public on the matter. Ultimately, there is insufficient community support for the proposal, including among the councils of each municipality, to warrant bringing a recommendation to HHS’ board of directors on this matter.”
With a little help from friends

A team of volunteers descended on Grimsby last Friday for the 25th annual Good Citizenship Day activities, organized as a remembrance of Brandee Elliott. Elliott was a Grimsby Secondary School student killed in a car accident. Each year since, volunteers hand out treats and tokens to remind all that kindness can go a long way. This year it was a special tea, chocolate chip cookies and card holders which attach to cell phones. Here, volunteer Sebastian Turner hands West Niagara Secondary School student Divine Abdul Kaelie a card holder.

Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) in Lincoln
EDUCATIONAL WEBINAR SERIES FOR PROVIDERS
Town of Lincoln Council passed By-law No. 2023-68, a By-law to implement and mandate a 4% MAT on all:
• Traditional hotel accommodations (28 days or less), effective April 1, 2024
• Short-term accommodations (28 days or less), effective July 1, 2024
This tax is to be applied exclusively to the accommodation portion on the guest invoice.
What is MAT?
MAT is a mandatory tax aimed at providing essential funding to support one of Lincoln’s most significant economic sector, tourism, and spur further economic growth and job creation. It will help fund destination marketing and tourism development initiatives. The MAT program, authorized by the Stronger, Healthier Ontario Act 2017, empowers municipalities to levy a transient accommodations tax. The MAT applies to the sale of overnight accommodations only and is paid for by the visitor. The revenues from MAT will help fund the Destination Marketing Organization.
MAT Collection and Remittance Webinars?
To assist our local accommodations providers in better understanding their responsibilities as it pertains to MAT remittance, Town Staff have organized a series of educational webinars with the Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association (ORHMA), Lincoln’s designated collection agent for MAT. The webinars will run on:
• Tuesday, June 18 – 1 p.m.
• Tuesday, June 25 – 6 p.m.

Grant will help pay for new YMCA boiler
YMCA of Niagara in Grimsby is getting a new boiler thanks to a Ontario Trillium Foundation grant of nearly $116,000.
Niagara West MPP and newly minuted Associate Minister of Energy Sam Oosterhoff made the announcement last Friday.
“The Niagara West YMCA in Grimsby is a key institution in our local community,” said Oosterhoff.
“This Ontario Trillium Foundation capital grant has supported the replacement of the aging heating system, helping keep memberships affordable and helping local seniors, families and students stay active and healthy. It’s one more example of how the Ontario gov-
ernment is investing in local communities across Niagara West.”
Upgrades at the West Niagara YMCA include the installation of a new boiler at the fitness and aquatic centre. The project will ensure a reliable and energyefficient heating system, enhancing the comfort and experience for all visitors and staff.

GRIMSBY
BETZNER,

OBITUARIES
Charlotte “Ann” (nee Gastle)
Ann passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2024, supported by loved ones at McNally House Hospice. Ann was predeceased by her loving husband of over 66 years Leon, and her parents Rhoda and Henry Gastle and brother Allen Gastle. Ann was a caring mother to Lynn Betzner (Robert Lyon) and the late David Betzner (Tanya Purchase). She was a cherished grandmother to Aurore and Adeleine Lyon and Alexander Betzner.
Ann was born in Carlisle, Ontario and grew up on a 100 acre farm. Ann had many vivid memories of tending to the cows, the crops and the horses on the farm. She graduated from Waterdown High School and then attended Canada Business College in Hamilton. It was at Business College where she met Leon and started to build a loving lifelong partnership. After graduation she worked as a secretary in the customs department at Canadian Westinghouse Co. Ltd. in Hamilton in which she took great pride. She then joined Leon in running the family hardware store business in Grimsby, where she managed the purchasing orders and the accounts for several decades until their well-deserved retirement.
Ann’s life was rich and full. She had many lifelong friends and developed close relationships wherever she went as they were charmed by her dry humour. She possessed great intelligence, resilience and a straight forward “get it done” approach to life and had many interests. She enjoyed needle-point, playing bridge, singing in the choir and volunteering at Trinity United Church, Grimsby. In her later years, she lived independently in her home, exercised, and drove daily to her favorite lunch spots.
A very special thank you to Dr. Cari Reed whose dedicated care and support meant so much to Ann.

Clarence will also be missed by his siblings and their families: Annie, Sam, Andy, Dorothy, and Rick in Ontario and John, Dina, and Rita, in British Columbia. He is survived by many nieces and nephews who he loved to laugh and spend time with. Clarence was predeceased by his parents John and Aukje Kingma, his brother Douglas and his sisters Gerda and Susan.
Clarence was born in the Netherlands on September 17, 1942 and his family immigrated to Canada in 1952 where life was enjoyed on the family farm in Wainfleet, Ontario. He lived many years in Grimsby and appreciated time with neighbours and friends before moving to Ridgeway to reside with his daughter until his passing.

Way to go Team Brandee!
When one is in the community newspaper business for long enough there occasions to do and see some really fun things. With that, on occasion, comes some really dark, difficult occurrences.
It is all part of the “you never know what a day will hold” environment of a community newsman.
Friendly visit

Good Citizenship Day volunteer Cheryl England was one of the helpers who dropped special origami teas at Maplecrest Village last Friday. She got a helping hand from Maplecrest’s Alex DeLuca.
Is there a strike 8?
The latest decision by the Ontario Land Tribunal to allow yet another Grimsby-on-The-Lake condo project to proceed without proper parking being allotted is far beyond “strike three” for the area...it appears developers have struck out the side.
Anyone who has tried to visit the boardwalk or visit a shop or eatery in the area knows the parking situation is acute as it stands. As more projects come online, the problem will get worse and worse. Grimsby planning should have stuck to its guns on the 1.25 requirement per unit, but didn’t - and residents and business in the area will pay the price. M.W.
At the top of the heavy, painful instances I have dealt with was the death of Brandee Elliott at the age of 17 having just had her birthday on June 7.
Without going into detail, the QEW accident which claimed the Grimsby teen’s life on a sunny afternoon just before then end of the high school year at Grimsby Secondary School wrapped up is right at the top of that pile.
In my dealings with schools over the years, I’ve dealt with hundreds and hundreds of kids, showcasing their exploits to the community.
Contests, sporting events, academic challenges, art competitions...you name it, I’ve covered it.
Over her GSS years, Brandee’s name popped up many times, so I got to deal with frequently. Just prior to her passing, I had done a story and photo with her and her Grade 9 team of students who had just returned from an international think tank competition in Rhode Island.
The team finished 28 out of 61 entrants in 1995. The next year, in 1996, the

Brandee, Lisa Rehak,
Lawrie and Megan Bradley - took #1 in the same competition.
The sky was the limit for that girl.
Bright, intuitive, insightful: the whole package.
That changed with a phone call. I had that happen to me with my Dad when I was a kid. Indescribable.
What followed was the most dramatic scene I have ever witnessed in person.
Anyone downtown Grimsby on the day of Brandee’s funeral will remember it vividly.
Jet black horses pulling a spectacularly ornate, glasssided hearse carriage made its was through the heart of downtown on Main Street enroute to Brandee’s final resting place. It was a sight!
A couple of years after that, I recall Brandee’s mother, Nancy, turning out at a Grimsby town council meeting asking for the first Good Citizenship Day to be officially recognized by the municipality.
Butterflies was and is a re-
curring theme of the event.
Last Friday I was driving down Main Street and notice the lawn signs with the familiar butterfly. I knew it was time to call Nancy to see what was planned for the day.
Before I know it, Nancy was standing at my deskbefore I even called.
The volunteer team was covering every corner of town including walking Main Street, going into shop, staking out West Niagara Secondary School and more giving out simple items all with a view to create positive energy, good vibes and a friendly atmosphere.
People don’t expect that kind of thing anymore. It is far too easy to get absorbed by the all the negativity that bombards us on a day-to-day basis.
Well, Nancy and her son Corey - who has been along for the ride since Year 1were out together Friday and they (and team) made sure to it that thousands in town were touched with a ray of sunshine.
Any trend - positive or negative - has to start somewhere and this family and the group of dedicated volunteers has been working for 25 years to make something positive come from a complete and utter tragedy.
Getting up off the carpet when something like that happens is really, really tough. The Elliotts and friends have done it and are making our community a better place because of it.
