Niagara Region will shuffle its traffic speed camera deck this month with a new installation near West Niagara Secondary School coming online.
The new stretch of Hwy. 8 - Main Street East - was designated a Community Safety Zone in August 2023 - between Lawrence Avenue and Durham Road.
“The cameras have been decommissioned from the last ASE rotation locations (Blessed Trinity) and will begin enforcement in the new locations in early 2025, after a period of testing and verification,” said Frank Tassone, Niagara Region’s director of Transportation Services.
“The Region will be issuing a public notice advising of the timing and locations of the new active automated speed enforcement locations in the New Year.”
Lincoln will have no speed cameras operational in the January-April time frame, while West Lincoln will see the unit go live on Station Street, Spring Creek Road and West Street.
“When the cameras become active the “coming soon” is removed from the automated speed enforcement road signs and “in use” is displayed on the signs. When cameras are no longer in use, automated speed road signs are removed,” said Janet Rose, a Niagara Region communications consultant.
Niagara West municipalities will host their respective New Years Levee events this weekend.
Lincoln and West Lincoln will both host events this Saturday, Jan. 4 from 2-4 p.m. - both at their respective community centres.
Lincoln’s Fleming Centre event will include free skating and crafts, as well as hot chocolate and coffee donated by Tim
Hortons.
West Lincoln Community Centre will also have a free skate, coffee and hot chocolate as well as pastries.
Grimsby’s event at Grimsby Public Art Gallery runs this Sunday, Jan. 5 from 1-4 p.m. A scavenger hunt with a $50 gift certificate prize up for grabs, a resolutions collage, treats and hot chocolate are planned.

"My family highly recommends the Ouzas team. From the moment we met Zoi until we purchased our house, her and her team (thanks Kate and Caitlyn!) were honest, responsive, and helpful with everything. We felt like we were in good hands all throughout the process and it made buying a home feel even more exciting. Unfortunately, there are some dishonest Realtors out there, but Zoi and her team gave us faith that there are also good, honest realtors who will think of their clients' needs first. If you're looking for good and honest representation, definitely give them a call. We're so happy we decided to work with them. Thank you, Ouzas team, we appreciate everything!"

NewsNow is published EVERY Thursday & delivered to all homes & businesses in Niagara West, 29,006
The last couple of months has been a tumultuous run for us but we have not skipped a beat and that is thanks to the scores upon scores of dedicated carriers who have helped us deliver the community’s news to Niagara West homes during the Canada Post strike.
Grimsby Needlecrafters Club hosted a gathering at session at Grimsby Public Library on Saturday. Part of the day was spent making baby hats for donation to St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton. Among those on hand were (L to R) Alice Klepka, Ruth Rollo and Jean Moore. The club meets Saturday afternoons. Call 905945-5142 for details. Loree - Photo
Main Street Grimsby will not be the same. Hal Dyck, one of the longest tenured merchants on Main Street at Main West Men’s Wear died just before Christmas.
Hal was the ultimate gentleman, passionate about his retail craft and his community. He was a great friend of the Grimsby DIA for more than 30 years, helping with events and donating use of his private sound system on many occasions. Condolences to Hal’s family and friends. He will be missed. M.W.
We’ve covered all the ground in a difficult circumstance but timing now dictates we resume use of Canada Post.
It is a very difficult decision for many reasons as we love dealing with the carriers. Of the 200 or so which stepped up to help us, 25 or 30 are adults but, predominantly, it was local kids - and they were a treasure.
There really is nothing better than seeing an eight- or nine-year-old child earning their first dollars.
One lad came in to pick up his pay and Catherine handed him a $10 bill and some coins.
Eyes open huge, he grabbed his wallet and exclaimed, “FINALLY, I have something to put in my wallet. I’ve had this wallet for two years and this is the first time I have something to put into it!”
He was stoked!
Another little guy, I am going to ballpark at six years old, came in with his two older brothers and his mom. This little guy was the boss.
He stood with this nose six inches away from
where I was counting out the family’s earnings at the table next to my desk.
I asked the mom if I should divide it three ways or would she do it later.
Without hesitation, the little guy pipes up, “Divide it out”.
Sure, no problem.
I count out three piles.
Then I show him again to confirm each pile is the same. Good?
“That is correct,” he said, eyes fixed on the money.
A glance to mom, she shrugged. I am guessing she has seen that level of attentiveness before.
My personal fave...back at the start, when we were confirming with each carrier that had a safe, secure spot to drop papers off at their home...one little guy says to Catherine, “You can just drop them off in my bedroom.”
The first image that comes to mind is me walking into someone’s homes with bundles of papers and asking, “Which way to Johnny’s room?” That would generate quite a
reaction I am sure. The second thing that came is the level of comfort and safety that little guy felt for his bedroom sanctuary; that it was the first place that came to mind when we asked about a safe, secure spot in his house.
On a more profound level, one teen who helped us out immensely doing over 400 papers each week with her mom, told her mom how much doing the routes helped her break housebound behaviour.
The teen had noticed many residents would stop and chat along the route and it provided many opportunities to speak - face to face - with people. As a teen who has met with some anxiety issues, the carrier route provided a challenge met and overcome.
That is GREAT!
We never would have thought of that circumstance, but we are more than happy to have helped out in this way.
Going back to Canada Post is not an easy decision because there are limitations to their system, but we do love how great their connection to rural homes and apartment buildings is.
At some point in the future, we’ll look back, shake our respective heads and wonder how we got through this bump in the road.
These carrier storiesand there were lots moreare what I will remember.
