Regional transit consolidated

In what could best be described as a fancy housekeeping matter, Niagara’s regional transit system is now consolidated.

Although the system is now considered “new”, there will essentially be no changes – in the short term –according to transit officials.

“Although riders will not experience any changes to bus routes, schedules, OnDemand and specialized transit services, they might see a change in fare prices and technology helping to align transit fares and services across Niagara,” states a release issue by NRT (Niagara Regional Transit).

Having a consolidated transit system, which would connect all 12 Niagara municipalities, was a stipulation issued by the Ford government if GO transit expansion into the region was to be considered.

Initial projections presented to local councils in 2022 met with significant concerns as cost charts showed minimal economic impacts for the first few years but jumped significantly by the fourth

TRANSIT

From Page 1 and fifth year.

While all 12 member municipalities in Niagara voted to support the amalgamation of transit systems, West Lincoln and Wainfleet were permitted to opt out of any financial impacts when the move was approved.

“The Council at the time was not interested in contributing financially to this service as there was no clear indication when improvements of public transit services would actually come to reality within our community,” said West Lincoln Coun. Wiliam Reilly, who sits as a commissioner on the new transit board.

“I believe it was estimated that we

wouldn’t see any changes locally to public transit service for at least seven years, and potentially longer.”

Reilly noted part of his job on the commission is keeping a close eye on costs and how the system evolves.

“As one of the commissioners, I remain focused on doing what I can to be a voice of reason in overseeing the successful transition of the amalgamated transit service and assets, while looking for ways to improve efficiencies, and responsibly expanding operations under a fiscally balanced approach,” said Reilly.

“As our community grows we will need to address the public

transit in our community, or lack thereof.”

While, essentially, it is only the brand which has changed - not the service or fares – NRT general manager Carla Stout says the change should streamline the system.

“The new Niagara Region Transit will facilitate better access to jobs and services in Niagara, opening up new options for residents in neighbouring municipalities, and new markets for businesses,” said Stout.

“In addition, it will provide residents with more sustainable and environmentallyfriendly public transit options which will help our local environment by reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.”

How to sidestep financial distress with your 2023 mortgage renewal.

Is your mortgage renewing this year, and you worry that you can’t afford the payment?

Tip #1: Rewrite your mortgage for the longest amortization offered. Typically, the maximum is 30 years, but there are some companies that have re-introduced the 40-year amortization. Stretching the amortization - the time it takes to pay off a mortgage in full - reduces your payment. Try not to think of extending the amortization as a setback; When rates eventually drop, you can rewrite the amortization to restore your original repayment timeline.

Tip #2: Consolidate your other debt at time of mortgage renewal. Your new mortgage payment for the consolidated amount could be less than the sum of the individual payments you currently make each month on the non-mortgage debts, such as a car loan, or credit cards.

Tip #3: Don’t assume that you are getting the best advice from your renewal contact person, or your personal banker. Let me provide you with a free mortgage review; You’ve got nothing to lose, and possibly thousands to gain!

I predict this year we will see more financial institutions and mortgage insurance providers using emergency loan-modification options (referred to as loan workouts) to allow certain struggling homeowners in extreme cases to reduce or defer mortgage payment so that default is averted. I’ll do my best to ensure that you are not one of these cases!

When one door closes, another opens. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara (BBBS) is proof of that.

BBBS office at 18 Ontario St., Grimsby, closed its doors as of Dec. 21 last month.

Last week, the organization announced it would be opening up shop at 4309 Central Ave., Beamsville.

If that address sounds familiar, it should as it has been the long-time home of Community Care of West Niagara for many years.

“With this new location, the goal is to serve more children and youth, recruit more volunteers, strengthen partnerships and increase our programs and services in West Niagara. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara looks forward to increasing their presence in all areas of Niagara and collaborating with other social service providers,” states a BBBS release.

“Although they have different focuses and service models, there are parallels between the two charitable organizations.”

Nicole Boccia, BBBS marketing and communications officer, said the organization has been undergoing major changes in recent years as it attempts to adjust to various pressures created by COVID-19 impacts.

While staff had to be reduced when COVID first hit, BBBS has been able to reposition and now all has returned to its original capacity.

“Right now we are running at full capacity and have also merged with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Niagara agency to become Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara as well,” said Boccia.

“We will have a couple of staff working at the (Beamsville) office every week, right

now they will be there on a by-appointment basis.”

Individuals in need can come to CCWN and obtain food, clothing and emergency assistance. Community Care of West Niagara helps to bridge the gap to self-sufficiency by supporting our community members experiencing poverty.

BBBS provides mentoring services and support for vulnerable children and youth ages 6-18 and their families. Children and youth who receive mentorship from a caring adult have higher self-confidence and are better equipped to overcome life’s challenges. The demand for BBBS services is at an all-time high in Niagara.

Because of these packages of services, CCWN executive director Carole Fuhrer says the shared location is a natural fit.

“It’s a tremendous pleasure working alongside Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara in service to our community,” said Fuhrer.

“We look forward to many collaborative efforts as we believe their programs are essential to the vitality of West Niagara.”

For Erin Graybiel, BBBS executive director, the new connection should help both agencies.

“We are very excited to be working more closely with Community Care of West Niagara to support children, youth and families,” said Graybiel.

“This new location will allow for increased sharing of resources and cross- referrals between the two agencies.”

Any BBBS inquiries can be directed to Boccia at 905 646 3230, etc. 226, or email: Nicole.boccia@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca

For CCWN, contact Fuhrer at 905-5635822, ext. 5, or email: carole@communitycarewn.ca

Niagara Region has initiated a Schedule ‘B’ Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to investigate alternative trunk main routes for conveying water from the Grimsby Water Treatment Plant to the Parkridge Reservoir. The proposed study area is within the Town of Grimsby bounded by Lake Ontario to the north, Mud St. to the south, Stoney Creek to the west and the Town of Lincoln to the east.

The need for a new trunk main from the Grimsby Water Treatment Plant to the Parkridge Reservoir was identified in the Region’s 2016 Master Servicing Plan to support future growth. This project will allow for a more efficient operation of the overall water distribution system while ensuring the new capacity and future flow demand requirements are met.

This study is being conducted as a Schedule ‘‘B’’ Class Environmental Assessment, satisfying Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process, which is a planning process approved under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act. This study will define the study need, describe the existing conditions in the study area, develop and evaluate alternative routes, determine a feasible solution, and

Readers help update Winona Beach Inn-fo

More about Winona Beach Inn.

The building at the foot of Station Road (Winona Road) was built in the late 1890s when the Hamilton, Grimsby and Beamsville Radial Railway (HG&B) was going through Winona.

A group of Hamilton people, probably cottagers, incorporated the Winona Park Club to provide beach access.

They created the park and built the Winona Club House as a family resort on the lake. It seems to have been a quality establishment, much used by the legal profession of Hamilton for meetings and other events.

The hotel seems to

A Small Drop of Ink

have survived a fire which destroyed cottages and fishing huts in 1913, but the beach faded away as a destination in the early 1920s.

The hotel operated until World War I, except for 1917 when it accommodated about 50 seasonal farm workers. The Hotel opened again in 1923 under the ownership of Messrs. Campbell and Wall.

It offered boating, fishing, tennis, bathing, and dancing to live bands on Wednesday and Saturday nights.

The hotel seemed to close again for a few

years, and was used in 1935 and 1936 as a summer camp for Livingston United Church in Hamilton.

A newspaper advertisement in 1939 shows the building in operation again in as the Winona Country Club under the management of W.J. Murphy.

After Club El Morocco in Fruitland burned, it took over the Winona Beach Inn which then became Club El Morocco. More recently this building was known as Liuna Gardens, soon to become the site of beautiful condos.

OBITUARIES

Huisman, Lena

Lena Carpino Huisman of Beamsville has taken one final walk to be with her Lord in heaven on January 1, 2023, in her 88th year, passing away peacefully at the Port Colborne Hospital following a brief illness.

Lena was born on June 16, 1934 in Paterno, Cosenza, Italy, to Luigina and Antonio Carpino, the second youngest of 11 children. Raised on the family farm, Lena learned from her beloved parents the values that would guide her life through the good times and the bad: service, hospitality, loyalty, humility, and hard work. Farm life provided plenty of opportunity to contribute to the family including harvesting silk from silk worms kept in the attic, tending to livestock in the basement, and balancing goods on her head during the long walks to and from the market in town.

In 1957 Lena began a new life in Canada, moving from Windsor to Prince George, BC, before settling in Beamsville in 1963 where she lived the remainder of her life.

Lena was so happy to call Canada her home. She loved God, her family, her church, and friends, and served others in any way she could. She was proud of her home on Barry Drive where everyone was welcome and was treated to the same hospitality that her parents practiced in her childhood home in Italy. Lena knew no strangers. She saw everyone as God’s children. She met countless people on her many walks striking up friendships that have lasted for years.

Lena was pre- deceased by her husband John Huisman. She was beloved and adored by her daughter Rose and husband Larry Waddell of Ladner, BC, grandsons Matthew (Rachel) Waddell of Brighton, MI, Jonathan (Danielle) Waddell of Howell, MI, and Lucas (Lauren) Waddell of Saline, MI, and great grandchildren Theodore, Penelope, Jude, Elena, June, Leonardo, and baby boy to arrive in April.

We love and miss you Grandma PeekaBoo!

In lieu of flowers, go for a walk with someone you love.

OBITUARIES ELLER, Lawrence (Larry)

Dec 7 1935 ~ Dec 24 2022

The family are sadden to announce the passing of Lawrence (Larry) Eller on Dec 24th 2022 at home in Ottawa.

Predeceased by his parents Irvin Lenus Eller and Hazel Mae GarnerEller, 4 brothers and 1 sister. He leaves behind his wife Barbara Knight, his 2 daughters Lynn Roy (Fraser) and Lorraine Eller, his 3 grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. Larry started his professional career surveying highways for the Department of Highways including the Queenston/Lewiston Bridge. Larry also surveyed the Hwy. 401. He started as a surveyor and worked his way up to field engineer for RYCO, finally moving up to Vice-President. He was especially proud of helping construct McMaster University, John Roberts Library and the Butterfly Conservatory. After retiring, he went to auctioneer school and built a business he loved. As a child, Larry loved the call of auctioneers. He got the most enjoyment auctioning for the Grimsby Museum, McNally House and many charities. He was an Elder of the St. John’s Church, as well as on the board of the Presbyterian Churches of Canada. He was dedicated to the belief of his church. He was also Chair of the Grimsby Senior’s board of directors.

In 2016, he married Barbara Knight. His life changed a bit. He dug his heels in on wintering in Mexico, but finally after 2 weeks there, he agreed to book for the next year. He learned to love traveling, particularly through Europe but he was a real Canada boy preferring the East Coast. During his life he lived, loved and laughed a lot. He will be sadly missed. There will be a Celebration of life at the Beamsville Legion, Jan. 22 at 2 pm. In lieu of Flowers, donations to Knox Presbyterian Church in St. Catharines or Grimsby’s St. John’s Presbyterian Church are appreciated.

U13 basketball Johnny Walker Classic at BDSS this weekend

Beamsville District Secondary School will be the scene of Johnny Walker Classic this weekend – Jan. 1415 – and, no, not that Johnny Walker.

The tournament, hosted by the Grimsby Grizzlies-13 basketball squad, is

named in honour of team coach Natalie DiMarco’s father, Johnny Walker.

Johnny was a huge basketball fan and put in more than three decades of service refereeing the sport. He died of complications from Alzheimers.

“One hundred per cent of any funds raised will go to Niagara Alzheimers Association,” said Natalie.

“There is no admission, but (those attending) can make a donation to support Niagara Alzheimer’s Association, but it’s not necessary. There will be snacks and drinks available.”

On the court, the Grizzlies will suit up against Hamilton Celtics to open the show at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Their second game comes at Noon vs Cambridge Centaurs.

The final game of opening day goes at 4 p.m. with Pelham Panthers taking on Durham Crossover Elite.

The gold medal game goes at 3 p.m. on Sunday, while the bronze medal game will precede that at 1:30 p.m.

Duck dealings

Grimsby council is not ducking the ongoing issue of hunting on the shores of town.

At Monday’s council meeting, a motion was passed to set fines and develop new boundary graphics, including into Lake Ontario waters, to allow for stronger law enforcement regarding duck hunting.

The measure has been necessitated due to some confusion has arisen as Lincoln allows hunting off its shores while Grimsby does not. The new Grimsby bylaw will trigger a public meeting to seek public input. M.W.

The medium is the message

I just can’t on all this Prince Harry stuff.

For a guy who bails on centuries of family tradition in favour of getting out of the public eye, have you ever seen anyone more in the public eye who claimed they were trying to avoid it?

That social media consuming topic and others are the reasons I have not looked at anything online in more than two weeks - although I will say I scanned Twitter a couple of times to look for updates on the injured Buffalo Bills player.

I logged out of Facebook entirely.

For this, I feel like a better person.

There are lots of ridiculous things about social media. For me, #1 is the fact people will go on there and create 10 posts ranting about how much they dislike it.

I am just going to check out. That is one of my 2023 resolutions.

Yes, there is some good done with social media - helping track lost or abducted people, for example, but the list is very short when compared to the harm done.

Its destructive force and addictions have ruined one generation and is quickly dissolving the confidence and ability to socially interact of another.

Because I try to pay some level of attention to what’s going on at the

provincial, federal and international level, politics online weighs like an anchor around the necks of society.

Nobody can discuss anything anymore.

You’re either right or you’re a straight up idiot who should be shunned at every turn, never to be heard from again.

And that’s not just when dealing with politics. This level of polar dissent expands into every facet of life: from sexual preference to whether a goal in last night’s game was onside.

I am not a fan of either Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre or the Liberals’ Justin Trudeau, but to hear and see how they portray each other is bananas.

The insanity in the U.S last week with Kevin McCarthy will feed the social media beast for another month I am sure until a newer, more trendy target flares up. You know, like a coup in Brazil that mirrors Trump World and all he orchestrated on 1/6.

But the Harry and Meaghan show takes the cake for me.

At least in politics there is some level of gamesmanship afoot, although it can certainly appear nonsensical and childish. They have some level of purpose.

The former royals’ only purpose seems to be keeping their name and image in the public realm so they can make a few bucks because they don’t appear headed to any real jobs any time soon.

But the true danger of social media - other than wasting thousands of hours from people’s lives they will never get backis the use of algorithms to pepper accounts with content which pushes readers in certain directions. Anyone who has a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account will know what I mean.

There is a clip out there of Marshall Mcluhan outlining the impacts of the internet. So what you say, well, he did that in 1966. The internet was not “born” until 1983, or 1990 if you call the world wide web the internet. McLuhan’s words are ominous.

“In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is a hallucinating idiot...for he sees what no one else does: things that, to everyone else, are not there,” McLuhan said.

The internet is the land of the blind.
