Over the past 3 months, we have seen a dramatic downward shift in mortgage affordability and the ability to qualify for credit in general, as a consequence of the Bank of Canada’s swift efforts to tame inflation, which has impacted interest rates.
Higher interest rates cut into one’s borrowing power as a result of the higher interest rate that is used in the Government-mandated mortgage qualifying stress test.
Larry “BILKO”

Verico One Mortgage Corp. FSCO License #10460

The Government has not yet mandated that homeowners have to re-qualify for their mortgage at renewal, so you can take some comfort in knowing that you will be offered a renewal by your current lender as long as you have kept your mortgage in good standing throughout the term. But what if you can’t afford your new payment at renewal? One solution is to rewrite your mortgage with a longer amortization. A longer amortization means a lower monthly payment. By extending the amortization, this could bring your new mortgage payment much closer to what you are used to paying. The maximum amortization with mainstream financial institutions is 30 years, however, we work with mortgage companies that offer amortizations up to 40 years.

For those who knew Bill, he was the kindest of souls. He loved the good times, rock and roll, good friends, his dogs and cats, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He had a fondness for helping animals, nature, family, and his neighbours. Bill’s sense of humour would have easily captured you. Bill was both Uncle and Honorary Uncle to so many people – he was loved by so many. He was kind and was the ‘salt of the earth.’

William Korotkov of Moncton, formerly of Hamilton, Stoney Creek, and Grimsby, Ontario passed away at the Albert House Hospice on August 17, 2022 after a four-month, courageous battle with brain cancer. Bill was surrounded by his loving family. Born in Malartic, Quebec he was the son of the late Vasilije and Eva (Ludwig) Korotkov. Bill grew up in Hamilton, Ontario which led to residences in Victoria, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta. Bill then returned to Hamilton after a couple years around 1979 and then made Stoney Creek, Ontario and Grimsby, Ontario his homes, respectively. Bill was previously employed as a transport operator for about 45 years. During much of this time, Bill was self-employed (Knightscape Transport). After several years operating a transport vehicle, Bill made the decision to retire in Ontario and then shortly thereafter, move to Moncton, New Brunswick in 2020 where nearby, his two brothers Peter (Grand Digue) and David (Fredericton) made their homes. Bill would often talk about how he would enjoy sitting on his front porch saying hello to passersby while sipping on his coffee and playing with his duck toller retriever, Toby.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Albert House Hospice in Moncton, The Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada, or People for Animal Welfare (PAWS; Moncton). Online condolences may be expressed at www.cobbsfuneralhome.ca

Mayor, let’s go there first. Mayor Jeff Jordan squares off against Coun. John Dunstall. Not much to say about this race other than the mayoral debate will be the highlight of the elec tion season. There are so many indefensible posi tions Dunstall has taken this term - like when he wanted a taxpayer removed from a council agenda as a delega tion because he just didn’t want to hear what he had to say – it sure would be good for taxpayers to hear him attempt to explain himself.

Now Grimsby, oh Grims by....we’re close enough now I’m going to stop do ing my countdown in this space. I think the first time I did that it was around 480 days to the election, give or take.

Regional councillor... Wayne Fertich would have to be considered the frontrunner in his race against Michelle Seaborn who was dropped from her council position in the 2018 election. Anyone who was around for that show surely won’t forget all that went down.Grimsby council spots... lots of interesting little side skirmishes going on in the ward battles, but before we get to any of the candidate stuff, note the map on the facing

The flag is dropped and they’re off and running in the 2022 municipal election campaign run - a moment in time which seemed to take forever to get here, but will be gone in a flash.
Lincoln, when the dust settled on Monday’s certifi cation date, left two seatsmayor and regional council lorSandraacclaimed.Easton will return for another term as mayor, as will Rob Foster. There may still be some dust to settle, however, as Terry Farrell is not happy about his rejection as a mayoral candidate. I spoke with him late Tuesday, after deadline, at which time he had not decided if he would pursue some sort of an ap peal of his application.
Let’s start with West Lincoln. Mayor Dave Bylsma has had a tumultuous term with many of his political wounds, he admits, selfinflicted. He will have two challengers to contend with, including current councillor Cheryl Ganann. That will be a tight contest.
Many, page.like upwards of 20, inquiries have come in over just the last three days with people asking which ward they are in. Generally, you can tell by the map as major roads are fairly well marked, but the grimsby. ca site has a link where you can put in your address and tell which ward you are inas well as confirm if you are registered to vote. As in all previous elec tions, do not take my word for anything. Do your own homework. Ask questions. Challenge incumbents and new candidates alike. Clearly, if the last four years have taught Grimsby residents anything, making an invest ment of a few hours is well worth your while when you consider the person who gets voted in is at the coun cil table for FOUR years hell or high Knowledgewater.is power, so arm yourself and get ready. Grimsby has been unlike Lincoln or West Lincoln. Lincoln has been progres sive and methodical in its plan - although there are those who disagree with some of the decisions, but at least there is focus. West Lincoln has progressed a lot, too, in the last term with most of their turmoil centred about COVID/vax issues.Grimsby has been all about power struggles. per sonal vendettas overriding good judgment and straight up horrid conduct. Ok, one more - 60 days to election.
Warm greeting Norah Dwyre, 3, meets Wowkwis (named after the Mi’kmaq First Nations people’s word for red fox) the Prince Edward Island mascot for the PEI 2023 Canada Winter Games at Saturday’s 13-For-13 Festival event at Grimsby’s Peach Kings Centre. (McDonald - Photo)

There were no real sur prises in any of the Niagara West municipalities, but definitely some areas of special note.
A conversation went down last week with the recurring theme being “it is amazing how really smart people can do and say really stupid things”. Then this week, authors of a report reviewing Riding boundaries for the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commis sion for Ontario, somehow, felt obligated to prove this idiom true and accurate. Among other adjustments, the document recommends splitting Grimsby along the escarpment with the northern portion being grouped with Stoney Creek and the remain der staying in a new Niagara West. There are many reasons why it is a horrible idea, so note the virtual meeting date and plan to sit in Sept. 27...more to come on that. M.W. Head scratcher
