Butterfly highways combat Monarch extinction

Every year, millions of monarch butterflies make the long trek from Ontario to Mexico to escape the cold winter.

And every year, Mexico’s chapter of the World Wildlife Fund releases a report showing there are fewer butterflies making the trip.

The fund reported monarchs occupied nearly 60 per cent less land in December 2023 than they did in the previous year.

The report cites nearly 30 years of data showing a gradual decline in monarchs hibernating in Mexico for the winter.

The report is part of a growing body of research showing a decline in monarch populations.

The federal Canadian government responded by declaring it an endangered species in December 2023.

Under the federal Species at Risk Act, the butterfly and its habitat are entitled to greater protections than they were previously.

However, these protections are only relevant on federal land, and the provincial government does not recognize the monarch as an endangered species.

The province classifies the monarch as a species of concern but this does

not afford it any special protections, according to Ontario’s Species at Risk Ontario database.

But in Grimsby, volunteers believe they can make a difference.

“I mean you have to try,” said butterfly enthusiast

Milkweed, she explained, is toxic to different birds and animals, and the monarch butterfly absorbs much of that toxicity by feeding exclusively on it during its caterpillar stage.

“Then they taste terrible, and so birds quickly learn not to eat those particular caterpillars,” she noted.

Though she’s been interested in native species and pollinator gardens for much longer, Quirk got more involved with monarchs when she signed up to be a Butterflyway Ranger with the David Suzuki Foundation.

The non-profit conservation group launched the Butterflyway Project in 2017 to help restore habitats for bees and butterflies.

The program educates volunteers like Quirk, who then go on to help their communities grow and maintain pollinator gardens.

Marion Quirk. Quirk spends much of her time teaching her neighbours about the monarch butterfly and helping to plant pollinator gardens around town.

The resident keeps a garden full of native species to

help improve the biodiversity in the area.

She is often on the hunt for tiny monarch butterfly eggs, which are laid on the undersides of the milkweed filling her garden.

“They’re very clever,” Quirk said.

These gardens provide essential food sources and breeding grounds for monarchs and other pollinator species.

The foundation’s website states it has helped plant 7,200 pollinator gardens across Canada since its inception.

Quirk said she’s helped to See MONARCHS, Page 36

St. Alban’s fiesta celebrates farmworkers

About 50 of Niagara’s migrant farmworkers showed up at St. Alban’s Church in Beamsville Sunday afternoon for a late summer fiesta.

The church is home to the Migrant Farmworkers Project, headed by Rev. Anthony Illas.

The group supports migrant farmworkers in the form of religious services, social spaces and clothing assistance, to name a few.

As volunteers set up a dining room inside the church, migrant workers relaxed in the shade outside while listening to the sound of Spanish music.

“It’s an acknowledgement of the hard work and their presence in our country and how without them we wouldn’t have food on our tables,” said event organizer Sara Escarraga.

Escarraga also chairs the Niagara Migrant Workers In-

terest Group, a coalition of migrant worker support services operating throughout Niagara. It helps to provide infill support, like legal aid and healthcare, to workers with limited access to such services as a result of language barriers and residency status.

"Zoi and her team were the perfect solution to my house sale challenges. Zoi’s strategic planning and staging, Kate’s attentive and reassuring follow-ups, and Caitlyn’s administrative support made for a quick sale (an offer made in two days) and a relatively stress-free process – it was actually fun! I absolutely recommend Zoi and team for Niagara real estate needs. They were such a pleasure to work with, and my quick sale for just over asking price has allowed me to buy my next home and plan for the next stage in my life. Thank you Team!” - Barbara B.

From Page 1 plant pollinator gardens at Central French Immersion Public School in Grimsby and at Trinity United Church.

Quirk credits Jan Fedyczko, a friend and fellow butterfly enthusiast for pushing her to join the David Suzuki Foundation.

“I’m very concerned about our environment. Biodiversity is just on the decline,” Fedyczko said.

According to Canada’s Wild Species 2020 report, almost 5,000 of Canada’s nearly 80 000 species face some

risk of going extinct.

The report cites habitat loss as a crucial driver of declining populations for many of those endangered species.

Fedyczko said individuals have tremendous power to affect change if they work together.

“I always believe in the power of one,” Fedyczko said.

Quirk and Fedyczko aren’t the only ones quietly working to restore butterfly habitats.

Annette Gibbons, a resident and environmental advocate, has been working to reju-

venate the Grand Old White Oak Tree Stand at Grimsby Beach.

Gibbons said she’s worked with Quirk on the pollinator gardens at the historic beach as part of those conservation efforts.

Gibbons is a leading member of the Grimsby Environmental Network, a social media group on Facebook that teaches and encourages residents to protect the natural environment.

The network teaches residents how to increase biodiversity by planting and maintaining pollinator gardens.

Christie, Peter Guy (July 2, 1957 - August 10, 2024) - Peter, in his 68th year, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024 surrounded by his family. Loving husband and best friend of 35 years to Nancy (nee Ford). Amazing father to Drew (Deanna Brown), Erin (Sam Jones), Lisa (Curtis Hinchliffe), Grace (Ashley Melvin), and Megan (Cole Viktil). Peter loved his granddaughter Mabel, who always put a smile on his face. Brother to Jim (Sally Pepall), Joan (Jeff Robinson) and Ann Christie, brother-in-law to Dawn Black (Charlie Gezink), and Bill Black. Predeceased by his parents Jim and Peg Christie of Stoney Creek, and Nancy’s parents Jim and Carole Ford of Hamilton.

Peter was a kind soul, who loved his family and home in Beamsville. He was thankful to have experienced his epic flight in the Lancaster Bomber on June 1st, 2024 - a lifetime dream of his. Peter enjoyed 10+ years of retirement and “living life” in Beamsville with his family, following 33 years of employment at the City of Stoney Creek/Hamilton. In addition, he worked and volunteered at The Owl Foundation, for many years during his retirement. His last 18 months were challenging, but we have many great memories and know that he died peacefully with his family by his side. We are extremely thankful to the many cousins, friends, family, and health care professionals who provided support during Peter’s illness.

Family and friends will be received at Tallman Funeral Home - Fireside Room, 3277 King St., Vineland, on Sunday, August 18, 2024 from 2-6 pm and Monday, August 19, 2024 from 4-8 pm A private family interment will take place at Mountview Gardens in Stoney Creek. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Owl Foundation, McNally House Hospice, or the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Online condolences at www.tallmanfuneralhomes.ca

Passed away at St. Catharines General Hospital, on Saturday, August 3, 2024. Beloved husband of June for over 68 years. Loved father of Laura Jones (Louis), Helen Jones (Dan), and Philip Jones (Joanne). Cherished “Popsy” of Kelly (Derek), Jill (Steve), Nicole (Ryan), Kevin and Sean and great-grandfather of Eloise, his little shining light.

Born and raised in Birmingham, England, Dennis loved to tell his children and grandchildren rich and fascinating stories of his youth. At the age of 17, Dennis joined the British Army and served in North Africa for 5 years. He immigrated to Canada with his beautiful bride in 1957 in search of a place to build a better life for his family.

“Popsy” is remembered for his encyclopedic knowledge of history and geography. His family was regularly entertained when he would sing old songs from memory. Popsy was known for his endearing sense of humour, right to his final days when he joked with the hospital staff who cared for him.

A spiritual and practical man, Popsy has raised the bar for his family with his determination, courage and devotion.

MEMORIAM

CELEBRATE RECOVERY

It has been a year since we lost a consummate gentleman, George, who passed away just 5 days after his final diagnosis.

George’s sudden departure has left a void in our hearts but his legacy of kindness, integrity and grace continues, as inspiration to us every day. George’s compassionate nature, his smile, laughter, through a thoughtful gesture touch many hearts. After 40 years at Dofasco, George found joy as an incredibly active, enthusiastic volunteer at G.B.F, Community Care, an active, faithful participant at his catholic faith community, and anywhere else he was needed. George was there! Always available, impacting countless friends, family, workmates and participants alike.

George’s sudden and inexplicable passing was a shock to all who knew him.

But his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those he helped and inspired.

Sadly predeceased by eldest son Geoffrey (Now with his dad). Left to mourn, his caring and supportive son, Jason, partner Sharon, George’s sister, Carol Ann and brother in law, Alfred Smith and his loving wife of 55 years Janette “Jan”. And…Left behind as well George’s cherished little gift! His precious granddaughter Anya Honour. A special bound they shared. As Anya missing her grandpa, in her words: “Soooooo….Very much!”

“Grief is only love that got no place to go”

In our hearts, that love will always remain, as a testament to the profound impact George/Dad/ Grandpa and Friend had on our lives.

Volunteer efforts appreciated

This is part II of the note of appreciation for people who are quietly doing good things.

The Quirks are among the very first people I met when I moved to town in ’95.

The work of Marion Quirk, Jan Fedyczko and Annette Gibbons - among many others - and that’s just in Grimsbyare such simple, yet meaningful efforts that anyone can get involved. Everybody talks about stress these days. There is nothing more calming than working outdoors, getting your hands dirty, and doing a small bit to improve our ecosystem. Reach out. Find out what you can and get involved. You will be glad you did. M.W.

It astounds me every week

In life, each day is a miracle.

In the newspaper gamethe community newspaper game, anyway - and for business operators that surely rings true.

Here we are, our 13th year of publishing NewsNow and - in this edition - our 12th Best In The West reader survey.

This edition is our biggest, page-count-wise, as we have ever done. I actually had to ask a few people if they were good with running next week as things just overflowed on Monday with ads steadily streaming in.

We try to avoid that by putting in a solid six weeks on this edition as we deal with hundreds of our best Niagara West businesses who earned a Top 3 spot.

The program has earned quite a following since we have steadfastly maintain accountability by not going through the online voting format which inevitably brings mass voting which skews results. By sticking with hard copy votes which must be brought into the office complete integrity is maintained in the process and our business community appreciates it.

And we appreciate them.

There is a lot going on in this 48 Page edition, so please take the time to peruse the pages and see who won what.

These are the best of the best, according to NewsNow readers who voted over a 30-day window

back in May/June.

You will see other winners next week, too, as some were on vacation and wanted to run Aug. 22.

The businesses you see in these pages are largely responsible for the ongoing successes in Niagara West and few realize it because they seek no applause.

Little Johnny’s team won house league soccer - his team is likely sponsored by local businesses.

You had a good time at a dance/party at the arena or fairgrounds? Great! It would have been sponsored by a host of sponsors - some individuals perhaps, but typically businesses.

Now is your chance to give something back for all the business community does.

When you look through the pages, see who is there and make use their services or goods where possible.

Our small team here works ridiculously hard to

keep NewsNow viable and producing quality, local content for our consumers of real news.

This edition is testament to that.

We close the office on Fridays to allow for an opportunity for downtime - if it works out. What it meant the last two weeks was 10-hour days in the office, quiet, as most thought we weren’t here, but we still left the door open if anyone happened by. And they did.

Every minute of those long, uninterrupted stretches was needed all just to meet our press deadline mere minutes ahead of schedule. Our team has a combined 172 years of newspaper experience behind it - and we are only five, plus Evan Loree who has been doing some excellent freelance work us in the last couple of weeks. Catherine Williscraft, Erica Huisman, Donna Wisnoski and Joanne McDonald make a formidable unit.

We do it because we love it. Nuff said.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, we are solely here because the dedication of our readers and the faithful support of our business community. When you combine quality local content and Canada Post’s quality distribution, it is a recipe for ongoing success and survival.

I am already looking forward to showcasing Best winners in 2025!
