Bathroom remodels

bathroom remodel

Dollar for dollar, by far

bathroom remodels are most expensive By FHK Construction

Dollar for dollar and pound for pound a bathroom is, by far, the most expensive room to remodel with the kitchen a close second. Bathroom remodels can vary from new paint and light fixtures to a total gut. Normally they involve a lot of planning because they can easily run between $2,000 to $15,000, depending on the size of the bathroom. Planning is of the utmost importance here in Fairbanks, Alaska. A home owner or contractor has to make sure that all of the materials are on hand before construction can begin. FHK Construction has seen projects come to a halt because home owners did not order enough tile or light fixtures only to find out that they will not be restocked for weeks or, as we have seen in a few circumstances, months-where good planning could have avoided delays. However, although a bathroom remodel can be challenging, they are also very rewarding. A common complication with a bathroom remodel is mold. Mold and wood rot are things that we almost always find when bathroom walls and fixtures come out. Mold is dangerous and needs to be dealt with by a professional to ensure that mold spores

were properly dealt with and they will not continue to linger around the house. A common place that we see wood rot is on leaky windows that fog up and then beads of water fall to the sill below. The water running down the sill causes the window and the wall behind it to rot out. A good vapor barrier installed can keep the water vapor inside the house. Here in Alaska the barrier helps to keep vapor from getting into the exterior wall and freezing causing a buildup of ice in the walls. It is best not to puncture a vapor barrier if at all possible with can lights or any other fixture that would allow water vapor to go into the wall. The most common puncture that we see in homes is homeowners hanging towel bars on exterior walls and the screws puncturing the vapor barrier. Another complication with a bathroom remodel is the time it takes

to accomplish the project. In large remodel projects, like kitchens or additions, a contractor can put a ton of manpower into it and get it done quickly. Bathroom remodels are unique due to the fact that most bathrooms are small and you cannot have more than two guys working at a time. This slows the process and the efficiency down a bit. After you have a scope of work and a budget, a homeowner needs to go out and start shopping for pieces and parts for your new bathroom. I do not recommend fiberglass bathtubs or fiberglass surrounds for bathroom remodels. Bathtubs should be at the very least, porcelain over steel with tile surrounds. Tile is by far the most durable and longest lasting material in a bathroom. It used to be that tile was very labor intensive to maintain homes.newsminer.com 11

more bathroom remodel start installing green board on the walls and concrete board around the bathtub. The green board is a mold and water resistant drywall. When finishing the concrete board make sure that you use something like red guard in the shower area to make sure that no water can get through the underlayment before the tile goes on. A quick tip for installing the tile is to always start in the middle and work outward. The bottom row around the bathtub is going to vary due to the type and shape of the bathtub so I like to consider the second row as the base row. I then cut the first row to fit

but with new stain resistant grouts they are virtually maintenance free, even white grout, and will last years without maintenance. Once you have planned the project, received and inspected all the pieces and parts and demoed the bathroom out, you may find that some reframing and electrical repairs need to be made. Electrical laws have changed a lot in the last few years; you will need to make sure you use a licensed electrician that knows those laws. This ensures that your bathroom is code compliant at the time of completion. Lighting is a main concern due to Fairbanks’ dark winter months. The new LED fixtures will allow you to have a lot of light with very little power consumption. Recently, a new LED light became available that looks like a recess can that can be installed right on the vapor barrier electrical box without puncturing the vapor barrier. Next you need to ensure that your plumbing is also up to code. There are far less changes in the plumbing code than in the electrical code but make sure that all of the shutoffs under the sinks are replaced with code compliant shutoffs. Once all of the plumbing and electrical has been inspected you can 12 homes.newsminer.com

much to the bathroom as anything else. Like anything else in life remember, you get what you pay for. Remember that a bathroom remodel may happen only once every few decades. If you are willing to spend a little more in a remodel to get better quality materials, it is always worth the investment. When all of the fixtures are set, the tile is sealed and the light fixtures have been installed you can stand back and see the masterpiece you have created. A nice bathroom is a work of art that takes time and patience. In conclusion, I would say make your bathroom remodeled fun. Get people involved that want to do it and just enjoy doing the project. Take your time to get your finishes just right, do the work after hours or on the weekends and mostly just have fun. The result will be amazing!

between the base row and tub. This ensures that everything stays level as you go up from the base row. Last thing to consider are the finishes. This includes cabinetry and fixtures. As a rule, I do not recommend getting cheaper cabinets. They do not last and are the one thing that most homeowners are disappointed with. I prefer cabinets that look like standalone furniture. They tend to be a little higher quality and easier to keep clean. The countertops are basically whatever you prefer. Granites are nice but there are also a lot of nice artificial stones that look nice too. The fixtures bring just as

Make Jewish cuisine part of your Passover celebration Passover is a Jewish festival that commemorates the story of Exodus. In that story, ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, and men, women and children of Jewish heritage celebrated that liberation during Passover, a seven- or eight-day festival that is one of the more widely observed Jewish holidays. . Passover celebrations begin on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nisan. That day typically falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. One of the symbols of Passover is matzo, an unleavened flatbread made from flour and water. Though matzo is an enduring symbol of Passover, that does not mean it cannot be enjoyed at other times of the year. In fact, those who want to celebrate their Jewish heritage or even those who simply want to experience Jewish culture can enjoy matzo throughout the year. It’s even possible to get a little creative with matzo. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Chicken With Matzo Dumplings” from Michael van Straten’s “The Healthy Jewish Cookbook” (Frog, Ltd.). This delicious recipe can be a part of your Passover celebration or just a meal to sit down and enjoy with family and friends.

Chicken With Matzo Dumplings In g re d ie n ts: Serves 4-6

For the broth 1 2 1 3 4 1 2 1 4 12

leftover chicken carcass, all skin and fat removed Spanish onions, 1 whole and unpeeled, the other peeled and chopped leek, coarsely chopped celery stalks, with leaves if possible, coarsely chopped bay leaves large spring of rosemary large sprigs of thyme large sprig of sage large sprigs of parsley white peppercorns

Note: You can use good-quality, low-salt kosher chicken stock cubes or bouillon powder, but the recipe above for homemade broth is recommended. 18 homes.newsminer.com

For the dumplings:

7 ounces medium matzo meal (about 8 matzo sheets, ground up) 3 eggs 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 3 grindings of black pepper 2 pinches of salt First, make the broth. Put the carcass in a large pot and cover with about 21/2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the vegetables, herbs and peppercorns, return to a boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Strain, reserving the broth. Make the dumplings by mixing all the dumpling ingredients together, then knead until you have a smooth dough, adding a little water if necessary. Cover and let rest for at least 3 hours. Using your hands, form the mixture into balls the size of apricots. To put it all together, bring the chicken broth up to simmering point. Drop in the dumplings and continue simmering, covered, for 30 minutes. If you don’t have a chicken carcass, boil a whole chicken for the soup and use the meat in other dishes. Traditionally, a boiling fowl from a kosher butcher would be used. Health note: This is the famous “Jewish penicillin” beloved of every mother and grandmother. It’s not an old wives’ tale; there’s good scientific evidence that it contains vitamins, minerals and other natural chemicals that are antibacterial and immune-boosting. In addition, nutrients and valuable plant chemicals are extracted from the vegetables and herbs during the cooking process, most of which end up as active ingredients in the finished soup. homes.newsminer.com 19

working mothers

Fitness tips for busy moms

Working mothers have a lot on their plates. In addition to the responsibilities that come with raising a family, working moms also must focus on their careers. Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family

1

Work out in the early morning. Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise. Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week, and women who get up just 45 minutes earlier each morning can meet those requirements and then some. An added benefit to working out in the early morning is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the rest of the day.

2

Exercise with the kids. Working mothers looking to find time for exercise can turn part of family time into a time to exercise with their children. Play in the yard with youngsters while dinner is cooking or go for nightly post-meal walks. Exercising

with kids is a great way for mothers to get their daily exercise while also instilling a love of physical activity in their children.

3

Have a backup plan on hand. Working out at a gym can be motivational, as many mothers want to make sure their monthly membership fees aren’t going to waste. But there will inevitably be days when working mothers can’t get to the gym. Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are doing their homework or after they have gone to bed.

4

children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer on-site childcare may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well.

5

Exercise during lunch breaks. If possible, squeeze in your daily exercise during lunch breaks. Take advantage of on-site exercise facilities if your company offers them. If not, take your lunch outside and then go for a walk around the campus or a nearby park rather than eating at your desk.

Look for gyms with childcare. Many gyms now offer on-site childcare to parents of young Finding time to exercise is a common dilemma for working mothers. But there are some creative ways for moms to stay fit without affecting their commitments to work and family homes.newsminer.com 21

Easter eggs

Clever alternatives to traditional dyed Easter eggs Easter is a time when Christian families gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Religious customs abound on Easter, but a number of secular traditions have emerged as well. Perhaps the most popular secular tradition associated with Easter is the coloring of Easter eggs. Easter egg dyeing kits emerge in early spring. Consumers have a variety of alternatives to these kits at their disposal. There are some people who desire more environmentally friendly Easter eggs, so here are some creative and greener ideas for coloring eggs this year. There are many alternatives to dyed eggs, including options that are eco-friendly.

1

Wooden eggs: Visit a craft store

and purchase wooden eggs that can be painted and decorated however you desire. The wooden eggs will be durable and can be stored away for use each and every year. Because they are made of wood, a naturally recyclable material, they are easy on the environment.

2

Consider natural dyes: Use

different food items to create allnatural dyes for the eggs. Tea, fruit and vegetable juices -- even packaged drink mixes -- can be used to tint Easter eggs in various colors. Because you’re controlling the materials you use, you can ensure they are safe to use.

3

Experiment with papier mache: This ancient paper crafting

technique uses recycled paper and a paste to create a hardened mold. Turn excess scraps of paper into delightful eggs put on display for the holiday.

4

Purchase corn starch eggs:

Corn starch is used in everything from packing materials to children’s craft products. Corn starch can be molded into solid forms or foam-type consistencies. Egg kits are sold with this green material. When Easter is over, the corn starch eggs can be put out for composting. Foam-type eggs may be dissolved with water.

5

Make edible eggs: Traditional

Easter eggs can be wasteful if the eggs are boiled and used entirely for display. Rather, make eggs that will be

enjoyed and are not at risk of spoiling too soon after being on display. Gelatindessert eggs is one way to use the eggs after Easter, and creative people can try crafting eggs out of meringue as well.

6

Dough eggs: Have the children get out their favorite modeling dough and craft multi-colored eggs as a fun, rainy-day project. Those who want the eggs to last can purchase actual clay from the craft store or whip up their own medium at home. After drying, the eggs should be ready to paint.

7

Drained eggs: Those interested in

using the yolks and albumen from the eggs for cooking can poke small holes into the eggs and drain them. Then the remaining eggshells can be decorated and put on display.

Did you know?

April Fool’s Day

is a time for playing pranks on others, telling jokes and enjoying some lighthearted fun. The celebrations are believed to have begun in the 16th century when the new calendar ordered by Pope Gregory changed New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1 — and some people simply didn’t get the memo. The tradition of playing tricks on April Fool’s Day originated in France. While foolishness is a large part of April 1 activities, the day is known for some other notable reasons as well. On April 1, 1873, classical composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was born. On the same day in 1889, the first dishwasher was offered for sale. Daytime television fans tuned into “General Hospital” for the first time on April 1, 1963. And in 1976, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer, Inc., which has gone on to change the world. Now that’s no joke. 24 homes.newsminer.com

finished basement

Finished basements

save energy & deliver more living space By finishing your basement, you can gain more living space while reducing the amount of energy loss from downstairs. Basements that are not fully finished typically do not have insulated walls or covered flooring. This can result in heat loss and cause your furnace to work overtime. A remodeled basement offers more than additional storage space. It can provide a lot of extra room for a growing family, such as space for a gym, home theatre, office, guest suite, or a playroom for the kids. To ensure a comfortable and inviting basement, there are a few project components to consider:

mother’s day

Give the gift of green for Mother’s Day

Mom may appreciate chocolate or flowers. But for children who want to offer her something a little more special -- especially for their ecoconscious moms -- there are a number of different gift options to make Mom’s big day as eco-friendly as it is enjoyable. An eco-friendly gift for Mom is a gift that keeps on giving. When you jot down your gift idea list, think about adding these “green” gifts.

1

Make a basket of gardening gear. Garden plants and supplies are perhaps the greenest gifts to give Mom. Plants are so plentiful and varied that there are bound to be ideal flowers or greenery for every mother’s tastes. Compile different gardening essentials, such as seeds or seedlings, organic soil mix, mulch, all-natural compost, and a few different planting containers. You can also include gardening gloves and ergonomic tools made of recycled materials. Finish the gift with the inclusion of a book that describes different garden designs and gives tips for beginners.

2

Dine at a local restaurant. Many families take Mom out for a meal on her special day. To make the experience eco-friendly, select among restaurants that are close to home in the area. Explore the possibilities of restaurants that may serve foods made with local, organic ingredients. If you cannot find such a restaurant, do not worry, just choose a local establishment to conserve fuel.

3

5

4

6 7

Pay for a car tune-up. Improving the gas mileage on Mom’s car is one gift that can be environmentally friendly. According to the United States Department of Energy, keeping a car in shape can help save money and improve fuel economy. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve Mom’s gas mileage by as much as 40 percent. Also, be sure to have her car tires properly inflated. She can be losing gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in all four tires. Getting an oil change with the recommended grade of motor oil is another gas mileage improvement measure. Purchase eco-friendly kitchen items. It may be a major faux pas to give Mom an appliance or a new vacuum for Mother’s Day. However, if your mother is an avid cook or baker, she may appreciate some new mixing bowls or utensils made from recycled materials. If Mom is the consummate entertainer, get her new glass tumblers and sipping straws made from recycled glass. They are perfect for serving cocktails and outdoor entertaining.

Pamper mom with organic products. What mom doesn’t enjoy a little pampering from time to time? You can treat your mother to a spa experience at home by assembling a basket full of organic shampoo, conditioner, massage oils, bath salts, and any other organic spa items you can find. Select organic fruits and flowers. Companies can assemble a bouquet made from responsibly grown flowers or even a wreath for a wall or door. They also have food gifts, from organic fruits to nuts.

Spend the day outdoors. Most moms cherish any gift from their children, whether lavish or simple. A nice, eco-friendly gift is to spend time together. Research local parks or hiking trails and plan a day where you both commune with nature. Or even head to the seaside for a relaxing day. Explore the landscape and be on the lookout for birds and washed up treasure from the sea. Plan to finish the day with a homemade, picnic lunch. homes.newsminer.com 29
