Pay it Forward Every Day Most everyone knows that at Lake Wedowee Life we like to be shiny happy. We love to not only tell the good news but we like to SHOUT IT! From the big things like the ground breaking for the new hospital or Wedowee Marine’s Randy Morris selling a boat to raise money for the Randolph County Animal Shelter to the little things like the awesome friendly service you get when shopping at WM Grocery. Happy news is infectious in such a good way that it makes our days better in this big ole scary world. I hope you have experienced the kindness of strangers at least at some point in your life, but let me tell you there is not a whole lot of things better than to display kindness to others, especially when they are in need of help. When Traci Duncan messaged us on facebook telling her story about losing her father-in-law on Lake Wedowee a few weeks ago, it made me cry for her family, but it also made me beam with pride at how my Lake Wedowee neighbors pitched in to help in their desperate time of need. (You can read Traci’s story on page 12). That’s what is so great about living in a small town lake community. We know each other, help each other and when we put our minds to it get stuff done. We aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty to help someone because it is the right thing to do, not always the easy thing… but the right thing. My mama and daddy raised me to do right, be kind and help your neighbor. As I have gotten older, I appreciate those three things even more. It amazes me how giving our community is year after year with its money and time. And, even though, I have been questioned year after year “Why do you stay in Randolph County, why don’t you leave, you could do so much more in a bigger place?” Well I simply tell them the stories of kindness that I see or experience and that I wouldn’t get anywhere but here!

Enjoy Life Kelly Caldwell

A Thank You to the Lake Wedowee Community Editor’s Note: Traci Duncan reached out to Lake Wedowee Life in an attempt to thank some unsung Lake Wedowee Heroes recently. She wrote the following and we have printed it with her permission. Hi. I wanted to share a recent experience we had with the Wedowee community. I didn’t know who to contact so I hope you can help. My family loves Lake Wedowee. Being on the water is simply the best. We recently rented a house for 10 days. It was perfect. We all had such a great time. It wasn’t just my immediate family, we also had our siblings, parents, and grandparents and their families. We are all so close and being at Wedowee is always so much fun. But, our lives changed on Tuesday June 21st. A few of us....myself, my husband, his sister, their father Roy Kirby Duncan and my niece decided to go out on the boat. As my father-inlaw Roy was swimming back to the boat, something happened and he started having trouble breathing. He

their nephew, along with many other neighbors came to help. Rhonda and Carolyn were amazing, they watched our young children (Roy's grandchildren, a 5 year old, 2 4 year olds and a 2 year old) so we all could go to the hospital with Roy. Carolyn's nephew even came by the hospital to see how Roy was doing. And the hospital staff at Wedowee Hospital... they were wonderful! A sweet lady that I had never met stopped me in the hall and prayed for us. We always knew Wedowee was a great place. We now know it is full of angels! Can you please share this? I want the Wedowee community to know how special they are. Thank you so much! passed out before we got back to the The Duncan Family dock and passed away within minutes. Newnan, Georgia I just wanted to tell the Wedowee community THANK YOU! If you have news to share in the Lake They rallied around us during our Wedowee area, please let us hear from darkest time. Rhonda Hall and her you. Email us at daughter Kayla, who live across the news@lakewedoweelife.com cove, Carolyn and Bobby Entrekin and

Jimmy Jacks Treasure… The Hostage B George and I where there, almost in disbelief of the commotion on the hill,. But the adrenalin was flowing and we found ourselves running toward it. Big A was in trouble and I knew we were the only ones to help. We went around the brush to find him running down the hill dragging someone by the leg behind him who was screaming and kicking and trying to get loose. Just before he got to us, he picked up the guys leg and let the momentum send him flying into a large oak tree. Then he grabbed him up again and walked past us toward the shack, ignoring our attempts to see how he was and what was going on. Once at the cabin, Big A got some duct tape, tied the guy up and gagged him. He turned to us and said…. “This is real boys, I was in a tree mounting a camera and someone started shooting at me. The limb I was on broke and landed on something on the ground below me and exploded……I don’t know, may have been a land mine. When I hit the ground, this guy ran up to me like he was going to gut me with a knife he had in his hand and he’s lucky he’s not on that hill bleeding to death right now. But I thought he might be useful so I punched him in the throat and brought him here. I think these boys need to know we aren’t playing” B George took the gag off the young man and I said… “ I had no problem with you or your family. I didn’t draw first blood. You have to convince your family. You have to 14 lake wedowee life

cense that your last name isn’t Manus. Do you know what that means?...That means you’re a half breed. You know what the Redsticks do with the half breeds? They send them to the top of the hill to meet someone like this guy (motioning to Big A). You are expendable, you are the one to die first so that the others can know what they’re up against. You will die here, boy. If not by me, than by the family. So you need to talk, Caldwell, and you need to talk now. What are their plans? What do they know? Tell me about the gold that they think is theirs and why they think that.” B George interrupted…” Let me gut him. We’ll learn more about what they’re doing from his liver and kidneys than he’s gonna tell us! I’ve dealt with people like this. They are mindless fools and just follow those that will never give them peace. They live for conflict. They’ll get their 72 virgins or they’ll get their status as a martyr. Doesn’t really matter. This kid is dead. He’s fish bait and we are wasting our time by Charley Norton with him” “B”, I said “You need to shut up. If he wants to talk, that’s fine. they want a fight, I am more than willing to give them one. Don’t even But he’s not the Taliban and he isn’t the devil. He’s just stupid. You need think that I don’t know about the to dial it back in, man!” Just then, Manus family. I know where they came from and what they’ve done. I our silent captive began to speak. know where they sleep, where they ..”Look, man, I don’t know anything. I came here because I was dateat and where they’re going. They ing Mr. Earls daughter. He’s the one have nowhere to hide that I can’t find them and if they come after us that told me you guys were poaching on his property. I never shot at again, they won’t be going home. anybody. I had a knife cause they My question to you is,… do you told me you were trespassing and want to go home? wanted me to take care of it. I don’t know nothing and don’t wanna know nothing. I came up with the knife and this gorilla attacked me. What do you want? I don’t want to die. I just wanted to date Maria Manus. But if it means I’ve got to fight their fight, to heck with it. I’m going home if you let me and you’ll never see me again.” But I’ll tell you what I do know. They want to kill you and they will not stop until they do and I don’t think you would be the first. I can’t tell you why, but they think you have their land and they are not going to stop until they get it back. That’s all I know, god help me, and if there is more to it, I don’t know so just kill me if you have to.” “Well kid”, I said, “ that’s a compelling argument. But there’s a couple things wrong with it. First, there is no Maria Manus. There is no birth certificate, no school record and we have not seen a young woman anywhere on the Manus compound. Second, there is no way that any love sick kid your age would take a knife and go up that hill to kill anyone without knowing the whole truth. Your stupid but not that stupid. I think that B George is right, you need to be made an example so that the Manus family knows we’re not going to tolerate what they’re doing.” We checked the thermal sensors on the property and the gps locators until we were satisfied there was no one around. Then we dragged the kid to the flat bottom boat and took him over to the other side of the channel where we cut him loose and dumped him on the bank. “If you know what’s good for you, I said, you will get out of town. If anyone of us see’s you again, B here will put you in a box and send you to his friends in Guantanamo. You will live there for the rest of your life or until someone ends it.” The kid smiled, then turned and 16 lake wedowee life

From Uh Oh to Oh Yeah OOPS! I did it again! I accidentally splashed bleach on my new Lake Wedowee t-shirt! If you have ever accidentally splashed bleach on your clothes in a cleaning frenzy, then you will be pleased to know that all is not lost. Here’s a fun way to hide that bleach stain. Tie-Dyeing with bleach. Tie-dyeing is a fun activity to do right at home, and it’s also a frugal way to upcycle clothing or just about any other fabric.

Let’s Get Crafy by Tracy Carpenter

DIY Tie Dye T-Shirt Materials Needed: T-shirt Liquid Bleach Water Squeezable Condiment Bottle Rubber Bands or String Rubber Gloves Scissors First: Fill a bottle with 3 parts bleach to 1 part water. You can also use straight up bleach. (Make SURE to mark any bottle with “BLEACH” to make sure no one mistakes it for something else!)

Second: Lay your shirt out flat on a table. Third: Pinch the shirt on the side that you want the bullseye to be. Pull upward into a cone shape, guiding the fabric with other hand. Fourth: Wrap a rubber band 1 to 2 inches below tip of fabric, then continue binding fabric with desired amount of rubber bands.

Fifth: Gather up the remainder of the shirt like an accordion and tie with string and or rubber bands. Sixth: Once you are done tying the shirt up, place the shirt on a wire rack or in the bottom of your sink.

4 Evergreen

lake wedowee life 29

Seventh: With rubber gloves on, apply the bleach mixer to the shirt around the rubber bands. (Do both sides of the shirt) Eigth: Let the shirt sit for a few minutes until you see the color start to turn. Just be careful how long you leave the solution on, especially if using undiluted bleach. The bleach will start breaking down the fabric fibers. Ninth: Rinse with cold water and wring out the excess water. Tenth: CAREFULLY cut the rubber bands off and unfold. Eleventh: Wash Finished! The colors will vary based on what color your garment was to start with. *For a more subtle effect, tie the shirt up and place in a bucket of diluted bleach with a ratio of 2 cups bleach to 1 gallon of water. Check your shirt in 1 hour intervals. Some fabrics may fade faster than others so be careful with this. Bleach is strong and works quickly. When the color is to your liking, give the shirt a good squeeze to drain any additional water. Then rinse under cold water, remove rubber bands and wash.

Home is Where You Make IT Editor's Note: The original intent of this story was to tell how, Lake Wedowee Life's good friend, Scot Thomason is rebuilding a cool wooden boat, but when I got to his shop (and house) the story took a different turn. If you have ever picked up a Lake Wedowee Life magazine at Lakeside Market and Grill, you have seen the work of Scot Thomason. The magazine rack, given to Lakeside after its renovation in 2008, was one of the first times Scot tried his hand at wood carving to that degree. "It was before I moved here that we worked on that project," Thomason remembers. "Actually I would work on it sitting on my back porch at my house outside of Atlanta." A lot of things have changed in the eight years but it has come full circle in some ways for Thomason. "In 2008, my business partner Frank White had a place over here on the lake and I had visited a time or two," Thomason said. Thomason and White had a wellestablished custom furniture business in Atlanta that catered to interior decorators. "When we started our shop, it was important for us to be in Atlanta because we were new... but in 2009 we realized not many people came to our workshop and it could be 34 lake wedowee life

decorators quit calling and we had to go out and get real jobs," Thomason said. "Frank sold his part of the company (including the building) to me and he moved to South Florida." Another change during that time including Thomason marrying his wife Rebecca and deciding to make the cottonseed silo a home. "Becky is such a trooper," Thomason laughed. "When she agreed to my crazy idea, she had some conditions... "First... We had to have a separate entrance to the house from the shop," Rebecca said. "And I wanted a vaulted ceiling. That was it. "It didn't happen just once, it happened so much that Scot made a joke about it and told people that we were fine because we had water and electricity indoors now," Rebecca said. What started as a joke, ended up being inspiration for their guest bath. It has a vintage outhouse door, old medicine cabinet and wash tub for a sink. "It wasn't easy, that's for sure. We did a little along the way and I don't know if we will ever be finished with the house," Thomason said. "But it's our home and a reflection of us, we have filled it with things that are very specific to us. "And working on the house (and cub scouts) got me back to doing woodworking full time." cub scouts and he approached me about restoring his 1959 CrisCraft Sportsman. "I had never restored a boat and told him as much," Scot said. "So I kind of sidestepped the situation for a while. "When he approached me again, I thought about it and realized it was just wood and I am comfortable working with wood. So we got a budget together and that gave me the comfort level to go back on my own in the wood working business. Now a year later, Scot continues to work on the boat as well as working with his decorator contacts in Atlanta building custom furniture once again. "We have been working on it for a year and the goal is to have it in the water by the end of the summer," Scot said.

Keeping it Simple to Beat the Heat It's hard to get up the willpower to walk into the kitchen on a hot Alabama summer day. Just preheating the oven can feel like you're upping the temperature in the house by 10 degrees or more. When I really want to cook up a hot dish but can't handle the heat of the kitchen, I resort to my next best option which is to just leave the kitchen and hit up the grill for some outdoor cooking.

Let’s Get Cookin’ by Tracy Carpenter One of my favorite things to grill are whole pork tenderloins. Hold on. Hold on. I know what you are thinking, pork tenderloin is boring and has little flavor. Well, with a little marinade time prior to cooking, this lean cut of meat grilled up

right will change your mind forever. And forever is a long time. This recipe has few ingredients, it’s easy to prepare, and the flavor will make your eyes roll to the back of

your head. What's not to like? Serve it by itself or sliced up over a salad. I’m sure it will become one of your favorites too.

Balsamic Rosemary Pork Tenderloin 2/3 cup dark balsamic vinegar 1/3 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon ground pepper 5 sprigs of fresh rosemary, stems removed 4-1/2 teaspoons light brown sugar 5 garlic cloves 2 pork tenderloins, total of about 2-1/2 lbs.-3 lbs. Add all ingredients for the marinade in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Place the tenderloins in a large ziploc bag and pour the marinade over them. let stand at room temperature, turning occasionally, for up to 2 hours. Prepare a charcoal or gas grill for direct grilling over medium-high heat. Remove the tenderloins from the marinade, reserving the marinade. Grill the meat over the hottest part of a charcoal fire or directly over the heat elements of a gas grill. Grill top, sides and bottom 5 to 6 minutes each side and baste with the marinade each time you turn the meat. About 20 minutes total for medium. minutes.
