(Deut 30:15 &19,“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil,)(I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live) Choose Life, sounds like a simple choice doesn’t it? God sat in motion free will of which to choose was first from the very beginning of creation and as in the beginning choices don’t always go along with life. Most of us have the opportunity to ‘Choose Life’ every day without even thinking about it. What? Yes, something as simple as driving requires an incredible number of choices that can determine life or death. When you drive there are ‘Rules of the Road’ that must be followed to ensure society remains safe and not only for yourself.
A few years ago, the phrase, ‘Six feet of Separation’ was the mantra to keep everyone safe yet this also applies when driving down the highways and byways. As we progress along the two-lane highway there’s usually an invisible safety barrier of six feet or less separating ‘Life and Death’ that could happen in the blink of an eye. The ability to ‘Choose Life’ instead of ‘Death’ may seem like a commonsense statement yet this involves consequence for one’s decisions, actions, and desires. Quite often the human psyche reacts without taking into consideration the logical conclusion for the choices being made. The choices of Life and Death are often acted upon without considering this. (Proverbs 1:32, the complacency of fools will destroy them). Complacency is the failure to consider the consequence associated with a specific choice. Life and Death can be determined by the amount of attention we give to even the simplest matters of life. Life and Death can manifest itself by the way we conduct ourselves while using everyday items such as a car or tool and even our body. Society seems to have succumbed to numbness and complacency just as in the beginning and has mastered the art of deflecting blame with excuses. If someone does not like the consequence for a decision, they may choose to kill the innocent and defenseless. God is Pro-Choice of which describes a sense of consequence that determines one’s eternal destination. Choose

Robert “Bob” Wayne Miller, of Albany, MO, was born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1942, and passed away peacefully on February 20, 2024. He was the son of Wayne Emerson and Emma “Trudy” Gertrude (Price) Miller.
Bob is survived by his wife, Julia “Sheila” Christina Miller of Albany; son, John Miller, Colorado Springs, CO, and grandchildren Cody (Meghann) Miller, Trent Miller, Jetti Miller; daughter, Kerry (Jim) Roe, Kansas City, MO, and grandchildren Cailey Roe, Conor Roe; son, Thomas (Melissa) Miller, Fairfield, CT and grandchildren Sawyer Miller, Hadley Miller; his brother, John (Jean) Miller, Holt, MO, and his sisters-in-law Bridget Kelly, Eileen (Daniel) O’Connell, and Mary Curran. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bob grew up in Albany and was involved in many areas of interest. He participated in scouting and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1957. Bob was the president of his senior class and graduated as the Salutatorian from Albany High School in 1960. Later, he attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois for two years before transferring to the University of MissouriColumbia. Bob was the president of his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1965. After graduation, Bob served two years of active duty on the USS Alcor, which was based in Charleston, South Carolina. During his service, he traveled to Scotland and Spain monthly while supplying the Atlantic Submarine Fleet. Bob was proud to have served in the Navy and ended his commission as a Lieutenant Commander. After completing his service, Bob worked as a Production Planning Supervisor at Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY. It was while living in upstate New York that he met and married Sheila on June 11, 1976. Bob and Sheila became the owners of Wayne’s Clothing Store following their move to Albany. When a fire destroyed the original Wayne’s Clothing Store, they bought A.B. Price and Company and continued the family business for twenty-three years as its fourth-generation owners. Spending time together at Wayne’s, especially during the holiday season, created many fond memories for the family. Bob pursued higher education and earned his Master of Science in Business Administration from Northwest Missouri State University in 1982. Bob finished his professional career as the Production Manager at the Albany Manufacturing Plant, Tempmaster, and then York/Johnson Controls, where he remained in this role for twenty years until retirement.
Bob was very involved in promoting the rural community that he loved. He participated in various community activities, including serving on the Albany Chamber of Commerce, Community Betterment, Rotary International, Albany High School Athletics Booster Club, Albany Carnegie Library Board, and Gentry County Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, where he contributed his time as a lector and eucharistic minister, served on the Finance Committee, and was a member of the Parish Carnival Committee.
Bob helped the Albany Economic Development Steering Committee to attract Tempmaster Manufacturing to replace Rival Manufacturing. As a result, he received the Governor’s Leadership Award from Governor John Ashcroft. He was among ten individuals in Missouri recognized for this achievement in 1986. When the Albany Ledger covered the story, Bob expressed surprise as he didn’t even know he had been nominated for the award. Bob was a humble person who always preferred to recognize others rather than be recognized himself.
Bob was a kind and gentle man who believed in the principle that actions speak louder than words. He instilled this value in his children and grandchildren. Bob loved physical fitness activities and was an avid runner for most of his adult years. In his later years, he went for a walk every day with Sheila, rain or shine. Bob will be remembered for always encouraging his family to take walks together after holiday meals on Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. He and Sheila enjoyed traveling to Ireland to visit her family in County Kerry. Bob remained active even during vacations and relished taking strolls along the strand and exploring the Irish countryside.
Bob was preceded in death by parents, Wayne and Emma “Trudy” Miller; his son, Frank “Frankie” Andrew; in-laws, Mary and Daniel Curran; sister-in-law, Maureen Barrett; brothers-inlaw, John Curran, Daniel Curran, Eamon Kelly, and John Barrett. All services were held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Stanberry, Missouri. A Parish Rosary was prayed with a visitation following. Mass of a Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, February 26, 2024, with Father Sebastian Allgaier presiding. Burial with Military Rites followed in the Grandview Cemetery, Albany, Missouri.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or Albany Carnegie Public Library in care of the Roberson-Polley Chapel, 403 N. Hundley, Albany, Missouri, 64402. Much appreciation and gratitude to the Oak Pointe Memory Care staff in Maryville, Missouri, and Three Oaks Hospice for the exceptional care Bob received during the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

BEVERLY ANN GREGORY CARLSON MARCH 12, 1936 v FEBRUARY 17, 2024
Beverly Ann Gregory Carlson was the eldest daughter born to Kenneth and Madelyn (Gaines) Gregory on March 12, 1936, and entered her heavenly home on February 17, 2024. Bev spent her youth and life as a “farm girl” and grew up living with her parents on farms in Dekalb and Gentry counties, attending country schools, and graduating in 1954 from King City High School.
On June 5, 1954, she married Paul K. Carlson at Star Chapel in rural Gentry County. They made their home just across the county line in Dekalb County living in a three-room farmhouse “with a path” until 1962 when they moved less than a mile to the Carlson Farmstead. During the hey-day of CB radios the farm became known as “The Ponderosa” and Beverly’s title was “The Ponderosa Queen”.
Farming was Paul and Beverly’s life; Bev spent more than her share of time in the grain truck line; the Ponderosa Queen hauled most of the grain produced at the Carlson farm to the elevators in Union Star and St. Joseph during a time when it was uncommon for farm women to do so. Bev also helped take care of the livestock, she tended the cattle and hogs and didn’t shed a tear when the last hog was loaded and sent off the farm to market.
The Carlson matriarch was also a club and project leader in the Fighting 4-H Club in the Orchid community and was involved with the local horse arena and area horse shows. Hauling kids and horses was a major part of the summer when the kids were growing up.
Paul and Beverly enjoyed wintering in south Texas for a few years and in 1994 moved to town when Paul’s health began to fail. They enjoyed card parties and getting together with their lifelong friends living in King City. Beverly was Paul’s love and caregiver, transporting him every other day in his final years to dialysis in St. Joseph until his passing in 2005.
Beverly was a member of the Hammer Memorial Methodist Church and served the Lord as pianist and organist for a number of years. She was blessed with a beautiful voice and loved to sing not only with a choir but also as a soloist and provided music for countless memorial services for friends and family in the King City area. Beverly enjoyed planning class reunions for the class of ’54 and lunching with her “Nifty-Fifties” classmates as long as her health permitted. Beverly was also known as a “Sunday Driver” for a lot of years she chauffeured the church ladies after services to area restaurants where they enjoyed dining together for Sunday dinner.
Beverly leaves three children to carry on her legacy, Gary (Lorie) Carlson, King City, Jim (Becky) Carlson, King City, Linda (Rob) Hodge, Union Star; five grandchildren, Kelly (Steve) Dobbs, Nixa, MO, Bobby (Kyra) Carlson, King City, Ryan (Andrea) Hodge, Union Star, granddaughter-in-law, Celia Hodge, Union Star, Jake (Petrea) Carlson, Amity, MO, Sarah (Colby) Schuman, Amity, MO; eleven great grandchildren, Kamdyn, Jackson, and Landon Carlson, Addy Schuman, Chloe and Kaylee Carlson, Carter, Zachary, and Harper Hodge, Zoe and Cooper Hodge; and a sister, Karen Cheek, North Kansas City, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; grandson, Justin Hodge, and great granddaughter, Grace Hodge.
Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2024 at Roberson Funeral Home, King City, MO. Burial followed in King City Cemetery, King City, MO. Memorials may be made to the Beverly Carlson Memorial Fund in care of Roberson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 153, King City, MO 64463. Online condolences may be left at www.robersonfuneralhome.com.

This week, we honor two Stanberry Station EMS heroes, Brayden Gray and Eric Morriss. These two gentlemen are on the opposite ends of our staff’s tenure…Eric has been a paramedic with GRRAD for 19 years, 24 years in all, and Brayden, a newly certified EMT, joined us only a year ago. And as a team, they work together seamlessly.
Eric feels a real sense of responsibility to the public he serves. He has lived in Stanberry all his life, and his father, J.R., retired from years working for MoDOT, and still lives there. As you will see, serving others runs in the family: his brother, Derek, who lives in Rock Port, serves his community by working in law enforcement in Mound City.
Eric, as with all our employees, understands and anticipates that some calls will be extremely difficult and made more so when he knows the people he is called to help. But even when the call is less serious, he recognizes and appreciates the impact he can make. Kindness, sincerity, and compassion in any medical situation help ease the patient’s fear, and that is his goal when he is treating his friends, neighbors, and strangers, alike. He says, “I am so gratified and pleased when people tell me they are glad I was the person who came to help.” Eric works many long hours, but when not working, he loves fishing, being with family, camping, and visiting small and unusual venues.
Brayden also lives in Stanberry and is happy to assist the community he now calls home. He grew up in Union Star, and both his parents help the King City area by working for the postal service. Even though Brayden is relatively new to the GRRAD world, he fits right in with his co-workers and enjoys working with all of them. He brings a sense of youthful spirit to our crews, and he is always very willing to help wherever he is needed. He loves all the areas that GRRAD serves and is grateful to become acquainted with folks living beyond Stanberry. It has been his life-long dream to help people and to work in emergency services, and he feels extremely fortunate to have the chance to fulfill that dream with GRRAD. Brayden says, “I look forward to furthering my EMS education so I can grow as an EMS provider.” Brayden is currently working towards his paramedic certification at the Buchanan County EMS Paramedic Program and spends his extremely limited off- hours playing video games, gardening, visiting family, and caring for stray kitties.
The GRRAD Board is proud of these two men, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude for their life-saving and dedicated service.
