(Luke 22:36-38, Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take

and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.” So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”) It’s interesting to hear Jesus telling His disciples to arm themselves with a sword. It would seem that He is getting them ready to make a defense yet even though ‘11’ remained He makes it clear that only ‘2’ swords will be enough. I’ve heard messages on this scripture used to justify arming the congregation to defend against the spirit of evil that some times invades the Church, but when we follow the timeline as the clock ticks down to the last few hours before His crucifixion, we see Jesus using these two swords as a teaching moment with His remaining disciples. As they followed Jesus to the Mount of Olives, He would pray in the weakness of the flesh for there to be another way apart from the suffering of the cross, yet He surrenders His will to the will of God as He is being prepared as the one who would be cut off but not for himself. After the weakness of the flesh and the willingness of the spirit is proclaimed three times God would send angels to minister and strengthen the only begotten Son of God to face that which was about to be forced upon His body. (Matt 26:50-53, Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, (Malchus) and cut off his ear. But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?) Right up to the end Jesus would be the great teacher in spirit and truth.

John Paul Jones

John Paul Jones was born March 17, 1936 east of Denver, MO. His parents were Clifford and Merle Stanton Jones. John went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, October 17, 2022, surrounded by loved ones.

John married the love of his life, Carolyn McNeese Jones, April 16, 1976, at Ravenwood, MO. They have been married 46 years. John had one step-daughter, Carey Gail Smith (Kyle) and one step-granddaughter, Kaley Gail Smith, Brookfield, MO. Papa John was very proud of his two girls. He loved them, and they loved him back.

John graduated from Grant City High School in 1954. He worked at MFA in Grant City until his father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. John then quit his job and returned home to take

17, 1936 - October 17, 2022 over the farming. He took care of the farm and handled his parents concerns for many years, including making the last payment owed on the farm. He also served in the National Guard. He was a part-time OATS bus driver for 12 years and was well liked by those who rode the bus. In 1997, he was appointed by Governor Mel Carnahan to fill the position of County Clerk in Worth County. He served in that office for 8 years and continued to farm part-time.

John accepted the Lord at an early age when he joined the Prarie Chapel United Brethren Church. Later, he and his mother joined the Worth Methodist Church. On August 30, 1987, John was baptized and joined the First Christian Church in Grant City, MO. He served as an elder, and taught an adult Sunday school class for many years. He enjoyed reading and studying God’s Word. His life reflected that he was a man who believed in and followed God’s word.

John was on the board of directors at the local MFA in Grant City. He served on the Extension Council for Worth County and on the area board for Community Services. He was on the board and was the treasurer for the Prarie Chapel Cemetery for many years. John also served on the board of directors for Mission Possible.

John was a loving family man who tried to live his life for the Lord in the best way he knew how. He was a good example for both his daughter and granddaughter. He was kind to everyone. He was thought of as a favorite uncle and looked up to by his nieces and nephews.

John was naturally musically gifted. He played the bass guitar with a local band made up of George Dewey Gilland, Everett Rickabaugh, Junior Bell, and John Paul. They played for many local events. Later, John also played and sang with Bud Wilson’s band. John was a good singer and could harmonize well. He taught himself to sing The Auctioneer song and was very good at it. The problem he always said was finding musicians who could actually play it like it should be played.

Later in life, he taught himself to play the piano by ear. He loved playing the piano and always said that it was on par with eating as far as he was concerned. He felt it was a God-given talent, one that he should not neglect for fear that he might lose it. He could also do a number of voice imitations in his younger days and entertained his family with these on occasion.

John is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of the home, his step-daughter, Carey (Kyle) and step-granddaughter, Kaley,; one brother, James Jones (Judy), of Bellevue, WA; one brother-in-law, Bob McNeese (Jayne) of Northglenn, CO, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was pre ceded in death by his parents and sister, Merilee Knapp Parker, Redding, IA, sister, Doris McMichael, of Kansas City, MO, and brother-in-law, Ronnie McNeese (Judy), Grant City, MO. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the Senior Center in Grant City, which John always enjoyed visiting.

John liked meeting new people and renewing old friendships.

Tailor your search to specific activities, including birdwatching, camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, or shooting. Mark favorite locations to quickly find them again. Feral hogs are highly destructive and prolific pests. They cause significant damage to wildlife habitat, compete with native wildlife for food, prey upon native wildlife, destroy nests of birds such as turkeys, degrade natural areas and agricultural fields, pollute ponds and streams, and spread diseases to livestock, people, and pets. Feral hogs are a menace that must be eliminated in Missouri. Report Feral Hogs ◾ Report feral hog sightings and damage to 573-522-4115, ext. 3296. ◾ Releasing hogs into the wild is illegal. If you see someone releasing hogs, report violators to your local conservation agent. ◾ During deer and turkey seasons, opportunistic take of feral hogs by hunters with an unfilled deer or turkey hunting permit is allowed on lands owned, leased, or managed by the Conservation Department. Outside of deer and turkey seasons, the taking of feral hogs is prohibited on lands owned, leased, or managed by the Conservation Department. The Conservation Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, along with private landowners and other partners, are working to eliminate feral hogs in Missouri. Hogs are social animals that travel in groups called sounders. Shooting one or two hogs scatters the sounder and makes trapping efforts aimed at catching the entire group at once more difficult. With their high reproductive rate, removing only one or two hogs does not help to reduce populations. Anyone who observes a feral hog or damage caused by feral hogs should report it to the Conservation Department rather than shooting the animal. Feral Hogs GENERAL INFORMATION

POINTS TO REMEMBER:

• You must have your signed permits on hand when you go afield to hunt.

• You may use the MO Hunting app to carry your permits afield.

• Permits cannot be exchanged or refunded.

• Deer permits may be used in any order, and multiple permits may be filled on the same day, except during the early youth portion when only one deer may be taken.

• Before purchasing antlerless deer hunting permits, nonresidents must first purchase a Nonresident Firearms Any-Deer Hunting Permit or a Nonresident Archer’s Hunting Permit, depending on the type of antlerless permit they want to use.

• Residents do not have to purchase a Resident Firearms Any-Deer Hunting Permit or Resident Archer’s Hunting Permit before purchasing antlerless deer hunting permits.

• You do not have to purchase any-deer and antlerless deer permits at the same time.

• Resident landowners may obtain no-cost resident landowner permits.

• Nonresident landowners may obtain reduced-cost permits

You must complete an approved hunter-education course before you can purchase firearms deer and turkey hunting permits unless:

• You were born before Jan. 1, 1967.

• You are 6–15 years old. Please see additional requirements found in “Youth Permits.”

• You are 16 years or older and are using an Apprentice Hunter Authorization.

Please see additional requirements found in “Apprentice Hunter Authorization.”

• You are using resident landowner permits and hunting on land you own.

Note: If you are mentoring a hunter who is not hunter-education certified and not using

landowner permits, you must be at least 18 years old and hunter-education certified even

if you are hunting on your own land. Mentors born before Jan. 1, 1967, are exempt from this requirement.

• You have a developmental disability.

See Rule 3 CSR 10-5.205 of the Wildlife Code of Missouri.

YOUTH PERMITS:

• Youths must be 6 years or older to hunt deer or turkeys. Youth age 6 through 15 can purchase resident or nonresident deer and turkey hunting permits at reduced prices.

• If a youth is hunter-education certified, he or she may hunt alone.

However, if a youth is not hunter-education certified, he or she must hunt in the immediate

presence of an adult who has a valid hunter-education certification card

or was born before Jan. 1, 1967.

• The adult does not need a permit during the youth portions of firearms deer season.

hen planning for a hunt, usually the last thing on the excited hunter’s mind is getting hurt, yet it happens. For this reason, hunters need to make sure they have a first-aid kit that is suitable for their pursuit and that it is refreshed regularly to replace damaged or out-of-date supplies.

clude in a first-aid kit. You will want to add to this list depending on the duration, location and number of people going on your trip.

• Over the counter from any permit vendor. Buy early to avoid long lines.

• Online any time. Use your credit card to pay. No surcharges will be assessed.

Print your permit at home and have it in hand immediately.

• From your smartphone using the MO Hunting app. Use your credit card to pay.

No surcharges will be assessed. Your permit will appear on the app immediately after purchase.

Allow 10 days for delivery.

REPLACING PERMITS:

You can make your own kit or purchase one pre-made through numerous companies. The nice thing about a pre-assembled kit is that all the hard work is done for you. Several different sizes and configurations are available, depending on the duration of your pursuit and the number of people participating. These range in price from $20 to $200.

Often, after returning from a trip, the hunter simply puts his first-aid kit away with the other gear, but if it was used for any purpose, that means it gets put away incomplete. Instead of restocking your kit before your next trip, restock it as soon as you return home if you plan on traveling again soon.

• By telephone at 800-392-4115. Use your credit card and pay a $1 surcharge.

If you lose your permit, simply download the MO Hunting app to your Android or Apple mobile device, log in with your Conservation number, and a valid, electronic version of your permit will appear on the app. Permits purchased online at home can be saved on a personal computer and reprinted for free. Replacement permits can also be purchased from any vendor for $2.

If you want to make your own kit, do a little bit of research on what you should include for the type of trip you’re taking. Keep in mind the terrain, weather and the number of people going with you. Along with the essential medicines and bandages, remember to include some type of easy-reference manual that can

Because first-aid kits aren't used very often, the supplies can get damaged or expire. Kits protect their contents to a certain extent, but hunting trips are rough on gear, no matter how protected it is. Moisture and harsh treatment can ruin supplies. Once packages get ripped open they lose their sterility. Medications and ointments can expire. For this reason, check your kit before and after every trip.

MDC offers new online hunter education ”game” for certification

The new game-like online offering has participants cre ate avatars and pick game species and geographies to complete hunter education with immediate feedback.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. –Missouri hunters in need of hunter education certification now have a new interactive online offering in addition to existing hunter education courses. The Missouri Depart ment of Conservation (MDC) has expanded its partnership with the hunter safety course provider Kalkomey Enterpris es, LLC, to offer a new fun and engaging, game-style learn ing option through the online site ilearntohunt.com/.

“This new immersive, sce nario-based offering allows hunter education participants to have game-like experienc es by creating avatars and se lecting their preferred game species and geographies,” explained MDC Hunter Educa tion and Shooting Range Co ordinator Justin McGuire.

Preview the new online offering at player.vimeo.com/ 706253380?h=0a9f3bc413.

McGuire added that the new online option provides immediate quality feedback on real-time decision making for more than 50 in-course

exercises. “They’re really fun and engaging, and they still cover all of our hunter educa tion standards,” he said.

The new online offering will place participants based on their age at the time of registration. Participants 1115 years of age will complete the knowledge portion online but will still be required to take an in-person skills ses sion. Participants 16 years of age and older can complete the entire certification re quirement through the online course.

The cost for the new online Interactive Knowledge Course is $39.95 paid to the online course provider. The price of the online Traditional Knowl edge Course is $24.95. The self-study guide and class room sessions are free, along with the in-person skill ses sion and final exam.

Missouri’s hunter educa tion course is required for any hunter born on or after Jan. 1, 1967, unless exempt. MDC offers a two-step format for hunters 11 to 15 years of age that consists of a knowledge portion taken online, through a self-study guide, or in a classroom setting followed by a four-hour skills session and final exam. Missouri residents 16 years of age and older can complete the entire program online without the need for

a skill session. Learn more about MDC’s Hunter Educa tion program at mdc.mo.gov/ huntereducation.

“MDC has a proud history of providing hunter education going back to 1957 when it began as a voluntary course in Missouri,” said McGuire. “Since then, MDC has provid ed hunter education training and certification to about 1.4 million Missourians.”

He added that MDC’s hunter education offerings have changed over the years to meet the changing needs of the public. “The new offer ings are a perfect example,” McGuire said. “Participants of all ages will find these interac tive courses engaging and fun with just the right amount of challenge.”

About Pheasants

Ring-necked pheasants were introduced to the United States from China in the 1880s and have become one of the nation’s most popular game birds. Unlike many species not native to an area, pheasants have few negative impacts on native wildlife.

Pheasants have been able to thrive in agricultural areas where some native species, such as prairie chickens, have not. Early agricultural practices including the planting of small grain crops, large native grass hayfields, and weedy crop fields provided excellent nesting and brood-rearing habitat for the birds.

Pheasant hunting requires little equipment and is a great way to spend time outdoors with family and friends.

Pheasant Populations

Intensification of agriculture and the loss of Conservation Reserve Program, or CRP, acres throughout the Midwest have led to a decrease in pheasant habitat across their established range.

To bolster populations, wild pheasants from existing populations in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota were released from 1987–2000. A few areas, mainly in northern Missouri, continue to hold steady populations of birds. Pheasant harvest in Missouri peaked in 1990 with 24,479 hunters harvesting nearly 90,000 birds. In the 2016–2017 season, 7,433 hunters took just over 22,431 birds.

Landowners in Missouri’s pheasant range can help populations by providing ample nesting and broodrearing habitat. Native warm-season grass mixes and brome fields tend to provide good nesting opportuni ties, and as with bobwhite quail, diverse patches of mixed grasses, and forbs attract hundreds of insect species that pheasant chicks must have to fuel their rapid growth.

Getting Started

Hunters may take pheasants statewide. This change was made 4 years ago because pheasants are already geographically limited in the state. And because harvest is restricted to male birds only, it does not impact the population.

Pheasant-Hunting Gear

• Hunting vest (preferably orange)

• Comfortable hunting boots

• Shotgun, generally a 12 gauge, loaded with #5 or #6 shot

• Most hunters use a more constricted shot pattern for pheasant hunting than they do for quail. A modified or full choke is recommended.

Well-trained bird dogs are an asset for hunting large, grassy fields, but a few hunters walking side-by-side across a field can also experience the explosive flush of a pheasant.

Where to Find Pheasants

Pheasants are most abundant in northwest Missouri and portions of northeast Missouri. Conservation areas with good populations of pheasants are few. For more detailed information on where to find pheasants, call MDC’s Northwest or Northeast Regional Office. As always, be sure to obtain landowner permission before hunting on private land.

Tips and Tricks

Hunting into the wind with close working dogs while being as quiet as possible helps to keep birds from becoming nervous and flushing wild or running. This is especially important after the first week or two of the season.
