50 FAMILIES HAVE MOVED TO OWN HOMES FROM FAMILY HUBS IN DUBLIN

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr. Katherine Zappone TD has officially opened the Respond! Family Hub in Tallaght.The facility has capacity for 9 families where 7 families have their own apartments with 2 families sharing a kitchen in adjoining apartments.

The Tallaght Family Hub has seen 9 families with 24 children move into homes of their own.

Overall figures show that 50 families have moved into homes of their own from 5 Family

Hubs in Dublin.

The average stay in for families in the Respond!

Family Hubs has been 7 months and 8 days – 9 months in Tallaght and 5.5 months in High Park.

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr. Katherine Zappone TD said: “Respond!

Family Hubs are caring new model of accommodation which includes a range of wrap-around services to help families be in a better position to move to secure housing in the

short term. I am happy to see that every family here has a key worker and support plans which are developed with every resident based on their own individual need.

This sup ported temporary accommodation is designed to be as close to a home as possible and to ensure that every child and adult leaves in a better position than when they arrived”.

The overall figure of 50 families in Hubs supported by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive is a credible outcome from a new model first launched only 7 months ago.

Together we can aim to continually improve the Family Hub model to ensure that all families who currently find themselves homeless have the homes they truly want, need and deserve as soon as possible.

Last year Respond! delivered 135 new social homes and we have recently significantly ramped up our ambitions for social home delivery with 2,918 homes currently in our development pipeline. We know that the long-term solution to the current homelessness crisis is the building of social housing and we aim to play our part. We are committed to providing homes for life for those in housing need. Family Hubs are a short-term solution while we, with our partners, work on the long term solution.”

Senator Martin Conway, the Government spokesperson for Justice in Seanad Éireann, has launched the “Think Before You Buy” campaign. The campaign aims to highlight the growing issue of recreational drug use and the impact that the revenue generated from this drug use has on criminal activity and local communities.

The “Think Before You Buy” campaign takes an allIsland approach which has involved many different

stakeholders from either side of the border working together to combat crime.

Senator Conway said: “The Think Before You Buy” campaign is a fantastic initiative that takes a different approach in order to effectively tackle crime.

“It forces those who use recreational drugs to think about the real impact of their purchase, where their money is going and the kind of criminal activity that their purchase subsequently enables.

CONSTANT PHONE USAGE BY PEDESTRIANS IS CAUSING REAL PROBLEMS IN DUBLIN Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Dublin, John Lahart TD has said distracted walking is causing major difficulty for motorists and cyclists across the Capital and safety measures must be introduced to prevent injury and/or collision.

Commenting on the matter Deputy Lahart said, “People who are constantly on their smartphones, even when crossing the road in the city centre have the potential to cause accidents .Phones are distracting and cause people not to pay attention to what they are doing.

“Dublin city centre is a bustling hub of commuters, tourists and those going about their daily lives, but people using their mobile phones while walking are at greater risk of being careless.

“Pedestrians must share responsibility for their road use; we impose strict laws on drivers and with the surge in phone use, it’s only right that distracted walking is strongly discouraged too.

“We have rightfully banned

texting while driving but pedestrian fatalities as a result of distraction are just as possible. Pedestrians should be held to the same road safety standards as drivers, who after all are paying the price on their motor insurance premium for these kinds of accidents.

“Stanford University in Connecticut has introduced fines for those found to be texting while walking on campus. The US State of Hawaii, which has one of the highest pedestrian death rates in America, has also very recently introduced distraction pedestrian legislation, making it a summary offence.

He added, “Those who makes calls, send texts, listen to music, check their email or take selfies and photographs are oblivious of passing cars or cyclists.

They are therefore more likely to step into oncoming traffic or run into stationary objects such as lamp-posts, street signs or Council litter bins.

“Hunching over your mobile phone means you

are unaware of the danger posed by passing traffic.

Smart phones are rarely out of our hands but we must be aware of the dangers of being constantly on the device if we are near traffic and in the city centre. It can be dangerous and could possibly cause accidents or worse.

“The government should request Dublin City Council to start a campaign about addressing and adopting creative initiatives to educate and promote the public on the dangers of distracted walking and crossing roads unsafely in Dublin,” Lahart concluded.

O’CONNOR CALLS FOR PROGRESS ON GREEN FLAG APPLICATION Local Councillor Charlie O’Connor has renewed his strong call to the Council to take whatever actions are needed to allow for a Green Flag application to be made in respect of Sean Walsh Park in Tallaght.

He raised the matter at the October meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee and stressed to Council Management the strong support of Councillors and the local community. He also pointed out to officials the importance of the Park as a gateway to the Dublin Mountains.

“South Dublin County Council entered Corkagh Park in the green flag awards scheme in 2017 and the entry was successful.

Prior to 2017 no SDCC parks had been entered into the awards scheme. An assessment of all parks in the County took place prior to making the submission this year, to determine which

location or locations best matched the qualification criteria for the scheme. On that occasion it was decided that Corkagh Park was best placed in that regard. It is proposed to follow the same process again for 2018 with the assessment being made before the end of 2017 it is hoped.

Having achieved the green flag for Corkagh Park in 2017 it is now necessary to retain that flag and this requires that Corkagh once again will be entered in the scheme. It is expected that one additional park will be entered in the scheme in 2018 and that the number of entries will increase in the subsequent years. It is clear therefore that some of the main public parks in the County will not be entered in the 2018 scheme; however it is the Council’s intention to address

this in the subsequent years. The submission of the application and the implementation of the maintenance programme which the scheme requires both place a heavy demand on resources.”

According to Charlie O’Connor “I was really disappointed about the response I received and I will certainly continue to press Council Management to priortise a Green Flag application for the Sean Walsh Park.”

He added that Green Flag recognition for the Park would also be a great tribute to the various community groups who volunteer to help Council staff keep the Park clean and tidy and said that the Park must continue to be a place which the community use with pride.

FITZGERALD WELCOMES VICTIMS’ RIGHTS LAW

Local TD and Tánaiste, Frances Fitzgerald, has welcomed the successful passage of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Bill through the Oireachtas.

The Bill, a key Programme for Government commitment, puts the rights of victims on a statutory footing.

“One of my priorities as Minister for Justice was to develop legislation on

victims’ rights and to put victims at the centre of crime policy. Following on from detailed consultation with stakeholders, I introduced the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Bill last year. The legislation transposes the EU Directive, ‘Directive 2012/29/EU’ into Irish law, establishing minimum standards on the rights, support and

protection of victims of crime. I am delighted that it has now successfully passed through all stages of the Oireachtas and is ready to be signed into law.

“For the first time in Irish law the rights of victims will be recognised; from their first contact with the Gardaí, right the way through to when the offender is released from prison. It will

help ensure that victims of crime receive appropriate information, support, and protection.

Under the Bill, a victim of a crime will have rights including; · The right to receive comprehensive information on the criminal justice system and their role within it and the range of services and entitlements victims may access from their first contact with the Garda Síochána. · The right to receive a written acknowledgement of the making of the complaint by the victim. · The right to be provided with information concerning the progress of the investigation and any court proceedings. · The right to be informed of any decision not to institute a prosecution in relation to the offence committed against them and the right to request a review of that decision. · The right to receive information on the release, temporary release, or escape from custody of an offender who is serving a sentence for an offence committed against the victim. · The right to receive information in clear

and concise language and to interpretation and translation where it is necessary to enable victims to understand and be understood in their participation in the criminal justice process.

“As well as this important legal framework, an additional €250,000 in funding was allocated earlier this year for organisations working with victims of crime, bringing the total funding available in 2017 to €1.7 million. This funding will assist community and voluntary organisations across the country who work to reduce the trauma experienced by victims of crime and support them to move on with their lives.

This includes informing victims of their rights and court accompaniment for those who need it,” said Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald concluded: “This Bill puts victims at the heart of our criminal justice system, giving them greater dignity and support during what can be a traumatic time.”

SUB-STANDARD PRIVATE RENTED ACCOMMODATION IN DUBLIN NEEDS NEW NCT STYLE INSPECTION

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Dublin, John Lahart TD has called for the four Local Authorities in Dublin to be strengthened and expanded to adequately enforce laws and inspect units to safeguard against breaches of standards in the private rental sector.

The RTE Primetime Investigates programme which was broadcast last night exposed cases of extreme negligence by landlords in the private rental sector in areas across the city including Kilmainham, Crumlin and Rathmines.

In response,Fianna Fáil has called for the establishment of a new NCT style test to ensure that all private rented accommodation meets minimum criteria before going onto the market.

In addition to this measure, a national inspections regime should be financed properly by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government .

Lahart said, “An escalating housing crisis has left many

unable to afford the soaring cost of rent in Dublin, with no alternative but to settle in substandard accommodation.

“This is a lucrative business for those willing to cash in on vulnerable people and leave the safety of hundreds at risk.

“It’s believed that there were in the region of 1,400 private rental properties in Dublin found to be noncompliant with Dublin City Council’s health and safety standards in 2016.

Shockingly, just 1% of those cases resulted in legal action.

“It is my belief that our local authorities do not have the sufficient resources required to regulate the quality of units on the rental market.

“I believe a new NCT style system of national inspection shoudl be introduced so that those renting can be confident that their accommodation is up to standard and meets a range of criteria including the quality of Households’ conveniences.

“The new certificate system

would be similar to the NCT or BER system and would help ensure the highest standards are maintained in rental accommodation.

Renters can use the certificate and rating to assess the quality of the house.

“Anyone found to have

breached standards of decency and health and safety should be appropriately sanctioned.

The damning findings of last night’s programme are shameful and should never be accepted as any norm in our City,” Deputy Lahart concluded.

ZAPPONE OPENS BIKE PROJECT

Some of the findings under these key areas were: · 75% of young people agreed or strongly agreed that they learned best through active learning such as quizzes, learning games and role play etc. · Young people feel that the subjects that need the most improvement are Mathematics, Irish, English, French, Science, History and Geography. · Just under half of young people feel they are satisfied with the availability of career guidance in their schools.

Minister Zappone added: “Young people must have their say in policies, decisions and practices which impact on their daily lives. School is a huge part of their day and their voices must be heard and acted upon. This report proves that there are changes

which need to happen in the Education system.

It is really important for young people, teachers and government parties to study and respond to this extensive piece of research as it explains what young people need, and want to change, to make their journey through education better.’’

Minister Bruton added: “I have set the ambition to make Ireland’s education system the best in Europe within a decade and our young people provide an invaluable perspective into how we can achieve that goal. The results of this survey will feed into a growing body of research providing insight into the student experience and will most definitely lead to better outcomes for all. We are developing new Maths curricula at primary level and for junior cycle.

The junior cycle reform brought in for the first time last year puts more of a focus on project work and team work and less emphasis on exams.”

FF TO INTRODUCE BILL ON INCREASING SENTENCING FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES Fianna Fáil Justice Spokesperson, Jim O’Callaghan TD says a new Bill being brought forward by his party will introduce more stringent legislation to deal with those who abuse children.

The ‘Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) (Amendment) Bill 2017’ seeks to provide for increased penalties for those found guilty of the sexual exploitation of children in Ireland.

Commenting on the Bill, Deputy O’Callaghan said, “At present, the law provides for a maximum prison sentence of 7 years for a person who engages in a sexual act with someone between the ages of 15 - 17. The Fianna Fáil Bill seeks to increase this to a period of 15 years. The law also provides for a maximum prison sentence of 15 years if the perpetrator is a person “in authority”.

“Currently a life sentence can be imposed if the victim is under 15 years of age and Fianna Fáil believes that this should be extended up to 17 years of age.Therfore our Bill seeks to increase the possible sentence to a maximum of life imprisonment.

“Increasing sentences in this way is a legitimate response to public concern about penalties imposed on those convicted of child abuse or child sex offences. We hope to move this Bill when the Dáil returns.

“Sexual offences against children are among the most serious offences before our courts and have lasting, lifelong consequences for victims and their families. It is the responsibility of the Oireachtas to set maximum sentences for these crimes and if we want stronger sentences then the Oireachtas must change the law.

“The timescale and delay of the government to date in updating current legislation, as committed to on page 101 of the Programme for Government, has prompted Fianna Fáil to put forward this bill.

He concluded, “I hope to get support from other parties and members of the Oireachtas for these proposals.”

STRENGTHEN FIGHT AGAINST PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for National Drugs Strategy, Jack Chambers TD has said that Government must move quickly to adopt new EU legislation banning emerging psychoactive drugs, into Irish law.

In updated legislation passed in the European Parliament this week, new psychoactive substances entering the illicit drug market will be banned more quickly from EU countries while producing and selling them will be punished with similar penalties to other illicit drugs.

In order to keep up with the fast-paced developments on the market, amendments have been introduced to significantly shorten the procedure to determine the potential effects of new psychoactive substances and if required, to adopt control measures in the EU. Deputy Chambers commented, “The recreational use of psychoactive substances has exploded in popularity, especially among young people who often inaccurately think they are less harmful or noxious than harder drugs such as

cocaine or heroin.

“The synthetic drugs that are emerging are designed to mimic established illicit drugs and are laced with dangerous chemicals that have replaced those already prohibited under current legislation.

“As more and more synthetic drugs become readily available, legislators and decision makers need to be equipped to respond and safeguard the public from these toxic chemicals.

“Under the EU legislation updated this week, those that manufacture, distribute or sell these new

substances are subject to criminal law and could face maximum penalties of between five and ten years imprisonment, as is the

case for other illicit drugs.

He concluded, “It is my understanding that Ireland has 6 months to adopt this EU decision rather the

previous 12 months. It’s imperative that we make moves here in Ireland to urgently introduce these changes.”

TOUGHER LEGISLATION NEEDED TO DETER SENSELESS ATTACKS ON EMERGENCY WORKERS Fianna Fáil TD and Spokesperson on Dublin, John Lahart has called for tougher legislation to be introduced to crack down on those who are intent on attacking frontline workers who put their own personal safety on the line every day to serve others across the Capital.

Deputy Lahart said, “Unprovoked attacks on emergency workers

including those in Dublin Fire Brigade, nurses and doctors in the cities hospitals are now sadly a regular occurrence.

“The lead up to Halloween is arguably the busiest time of the year for frontline workers and they must be protected from attack with full rigour of our law.

“Those working to protect the safety of ordinary citizens are not just a uniform, they are human.

They have families and lives too and the public needs to act with respect. We need to teach our young people that same message, that those they are trying to harm could be their own loved one.

Deputy Colm Brophy said this represents an unprecedented Government investment in our public libraries. The funding will allow for the modernisation of our library service and for the extension of library opening hours.

Deputy Brophy said “This investment package comprises €161,125 from the Department of Rural and Community Development, supplemented by additional funding of €53,708 from the local South Dublin County Council.

“This funding is in addition to significant funding already provided by Minister Ring’s Department for public libraries here this year.

“Here in South County Dublin this investment will enable the implementation of our new public library strategy which will be launched early next year and which will be focused on modernising the

public library service and enhancing the range and quality of services available to users.

“It’s an ambitious strategy which is aimed at increasing library membership and usage of our public libraries.

“This programme of funding demonstrates Fine Gael’s continued commitment to the public library service over the coming five year period of the strategy.”

Minister Ring said: “This is an exciting time for the public library service and for library staff. The roll out of self-service technology in our libraries will free up librarians who can use their expertise to assist library users and direct people to the many excellent services offered by the libraries.

“The public library service has recently introduced a single library management system and a national distribution service that provides branch to branch collection and delivery.

“Through this groundbreaking new lending service there is access to 15 million items for all

library users in Ireland and nationwide access to all library services.”

Ballyroan Library has recently introduced a 3D printing service provided by Print Copy and GO. This service will allow library users to turn their 3D designs into a physical reality, on a pay as you go basis.

MINISTER CONTINUES TO TURN BLIND EYE TO DANGER OF SCRAMBLERS AND QUAD BIKES Local Fianna Fáil TD, John Curran has called the Transport Minister and Justice Minister’s delay in holding a meeting regarding the threat of quads and scramblers to the locals of Dublin Mid- West as a disgrace.

Commenting on the issue Deputy Curran said: “This issue was brought to the attention of the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross in late 2016 by Deputy Curran where the Minister claimed he would hold a meeting with the Minister for Justice to tackle the problem of scramblers and quads.

Over a year later, no effort has been made to hold the alleged meeting despite consistent promises from both Ministers.

“As of October 2017, there has been no confirmation of a meeting being held.

In my own area of Dublin Mid-West, residents have expressed concern over their safety due to the abundance of scramblers,” stated John Curran.

“Despite bye-laws that prohibit the illegal use of mechanically propelled

vehicles, the Gardaí have difficulties enforcing these laws.

“I am calling on parents to heed the dangers of improper use and ensure their children comply with these bye-laws if they own a scrambler.

“Many locals have informed me of the damage caused to both public parks and green areas in private housing estates.

An outstanding number of residents have mentioned their concern for the safety of their children walking to school, claiming that quads and scramblers have got dangerously close to their children in an attempt to frighten them.

“In a most recent reply from Minister Charlie Flanagan concerning scramblers the Minister yet again claimed he would schedule a meeting.”

“It is disgraceful that the Transport Minister and the Justice Minister has not complied with their promise and has allowed this issue to continue for as long as it has without any action being taken,” concluded Deputy Curran.

FITZGERALD ENCOURAGES UPTAKE OF EXTENDED PRSI OPTICAL AND DENTAL BENEFITS

Local TD and Tánaiste, Frances Fitzgerald, has encouraged workers to avail of the recently extended Optical and Dental Benefits under the PRSI Treatment Benefit Scheme.

“Fine Gael are committed to supporting people at work, be they employed or self-employed. As of the

28th October, Government has extended the range of Optical and Dental Benefits available to qualified PRSI contributors, which now includes the self-employed, and their dependent spouses/partners,” said Fitzgerald.

“The extended Optical scheme will cover the provision of glasses, either

free or subsidised if an upgraded design is chosen, or provide a contribution towards contact lenses.

Repairs to glasses are also covered under the extended scheme, in addition to the free eye examination announced earlier in 2017.

“The Dental scheme will now include a contribution to cleanings, either an

annual scale and polish or more extensive periodontal treatment if clinically required. These treatments will be available in addition to the free annual dental examination also announced in March this year.

“The cleanings will require a co-payment from the patient if the cost of the treatment charged by

the dentist is in excess of the fee payable by the Department. For the simpler scale and polish treatment this additional co-payment is capped at a maximum of €15,” clarified Fitzgerald.

“Currently there are over 2.5m qualified contributors to the PRSI system. These treatment benefits are an important support for

those who contribute each week to the State’s social insurance fund and it is important that we re-invest that back into their health.

Routine optical, dental and aural checks can help prevent future illnesses and I would encourage all eligible contributors to avail of these checks via the Treatment Benefit Scheme,” concluded Fitzgerald.

Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, has spoken out against the small number of rogue landlords who are renting out substandard accommodation or overcrowding their premises.

In one case the landlord turned a toilet into a bedroom and in another a tenant was living in a house with bars on the windows, a gas boiler in the bedroom, and water literally running down the walls.

“South Dublin County Council has the second best inspection rate of rented properties in the State, but many of its tenants live in overcrowded, damp, and mould ridden homes and they have no real prospect of a transfer to larger and acceptable accommodation.

“Our motion called on the Government to support the proposal by Threshold Ireland for an NCTtype system for private rented housing to further strengthen compliance with legal standards. It also called for increased funding for local authorities to proactively inspect rental accommodation and ensure more tenants are living in adequate and well maintained rental properties.

“Now that the motion has passed it is time for the Government to act and urgently implement these measures in order to prevent vulnerable tenants from being exploited by these rogue and slum landlords.”

ROGUE LANDLORDS MUST BE TACKLED

The Sinn Féin TD was speaking after a Sinn Féin private members motion, aimed at tackling substandard private rental conditions and getting tougher with rogue landlords, was overwhelmingly passed by the Dáil.

Deputy Crowe said: “Many people who watched the recent RTÉ Prime Time programme - Nightmare to Let - will have been shocked by what they saw. It was extreme, raw and shocking that this was happening in Dublin City in 2017.

“This week Sinn Féin tabled a private members motion calling on the Government to tackle substandard private rental conditions and to get tougher on rogue landlords. A majority of TDs supported the motion in the Dáil and it was passed.

“In the debate I detailed some cases that I have dealt with in Dublin South West in which tenants were treated badly and left living in completely substandard and unacceptable conditions.

CALLS FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR COUNCIL’S WINDOW / DOOR REPAIR PROGRAMME

Local Councillor Charlie O’Connor has called on the Council to provide significant additional funding for the Window/ Door repair programme.

He raised the matter at the November meeting of the Council and told management that he is receiving calls from many

Council tenants who are concerned at the delays in dealing with their requests for such repairs. Indeed, he added that he knew from other colleagues that it is an issue Countywide.

The CEO told Charlie O’Connor that: “There are currently 841

properties on the Council’s current Windows and Doors Replacement Programme.

The list is live and added to each year through tenant contact. The waiting time on the list is dependent on a number of factors including, rent status and whether or not the tenant is involved in any anti-social behaviour. Priority may be given to applicants with serious medical conditions.

The current average waiting time is 4-5 years.

The budget for programmed windows and doors in 2017 is €570,000 with a further €150,000 allocated for the replacement of one off

single windows and doors in urgent need of attention.

These together with energy efficiency initiatives throughout the County will bring the total to a €1M spend by year end.

Any increase in spending for this programme would have to be approved by the Council for the 2018 budget.”

According to Charlie O’Connor this is an important issue for Council tenants and he added that this would be an issue he would press at Council discussions on the 2018 budget

5. What can we do at home to help?

6. Are they making steady progress? If the parent interview is early on in the school year this question may not be relevant yet as the teacher is still getting to know your child.

7. Do they contribute to class discussions?

8. Are they at the expected level for their age group?

If they are performing below their age, ask what areas need to be worked on and what is being done by the school to bring them up to the level required for their age group.

9. If your child is having any learning difficulties then bring this up as well. What extra support can the school provide? What feedback can you get from the teacher implementing this support?

10. If your child is preparing for exams – What work is outstanding? What subject areas do they need to revise?

IRELAND TEAM CLEAN UP AT THE HDKI GB CHAMPIONSHIPS The HDKI Ireland team recently traveled to Wolverhampton to take part in the 1st HDKI GB Championships. The squad consisted of 8 Palmerstown Shotokan students, 2 Hartstown students and 6 Hombu dojo students, the team ranged from adults down to their youngest competitor Daisy who is 7 years old.

the icing on the cake the Irish team were awarded the Palma Diosi memorial trophy which

will displayed with pride at the Hombu dojo in Ranelagh for the next 12 months.

With Ray Stritch as referee and Jason Smyth coaching they all had a job to do, the day started off with some kata and they managed to win 3 Gold 2 Silver and 2 Bronze in the individual events. They then moved on to the team kata event with their senior team (Nikki, Adam & Aoife) getting 1st place in a big event and their 2 junior teams getting 1st and 2nd place respectively.

The atmosphere was fantastic and they came away with 4 Gold, 3 Silver & 4 Bronze, the day was to be finished up with a friendly Ireland Squad Vs UK Squad in kumite, the crowd were cheering for both teams and the atmosphere was electric, Ireland were victorious in winning 6/2 captained by Palmerstown student Nikki Murphy which made the day all the better and to finish up with

The launch comes against a backdrop of an estimated 12,498 people living with dementia in Dublin according to the last available figures from the Central Statistics Office*.

It saw the unveiling of two new TV adverts telling the stories of Maureen O’Hara and Paddy Butler who have generously shared their experience of living with dementia for the campaign.

Launching the new campaign, Minister Harris said: “The Dementia: Understand Together campaign seeks to raise awareness, increase understanding, and address the loneliness often experienced by people living with dementia and their families. We want to open up conversations in homes, workplaces and communities across the country about dementia, increasing understanding

and reducing the isolation that people with the condition frequently experience. It aims to show that people with dementia can be supported to live well, and that each of us can play our part by maintaining friendships and including people in our shared community life.”

The campaign is part of the Dementia: Understand Together initiative, which is led by the HSE in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Genio. The campaign is funded by the HSE and The Atlantic Philanthropies, and began in 2015. This new phase of the campaign will run on national television, national and regional radio stations, and digital and social media, and continue until the end of 2018.

The young man David with only a staff and a sling killed the giant warrior Goliath of the Philistines. Most people would considered this a children’s story but it is not a children’s story, it is part of Israel’s history. As mature adults, we ought to look again at the story of David and Goliath and find out how it applies to us!

David’s Faith and Courage The New Testament does not mention David’s encounter with Goliath but it does commend his faith in God, “And what more shall I say?

For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouth of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight” (Hebrews 11:32-34).

While Saul and his army were paralyzed with fear at the challenge of Goliath, “He stood and shouted at the ranks of Israel and said to them. ‘Why do you come out to draw up in battle array?

a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. I do want to point out that David did not suddenly or miraculously receive his courageous faith on the day.

He explained to Saul why he felt strong enough with God’s help to defeat this Philistine.

When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and attacked him, and rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him. LOCAL DANCE GROUP FIT KIDS/ FIT TEENS ARE BACK WITH A BANG!!

There was cheers and tears of joy as Jordan Nguyen was crowned World Street Dance Champion 2017 in Glasgow last month.

Jordan, along with a hundred and ten dancers and supporters from Fit Kids/Fit Teens Dance School in Lucan, Celbridge and Blanchardstown travelled to the event which saw around thirty countries battle it out for four days to claim the coveted title.

Speaking to the media after his victory the 17yr old said “Winning first place was honestly the best feeling in the world.

Being able to represent my country against so many other countries was such an amazing experience. This moment can never be taken away from me. If it wasn’t for the support of my parents, and all my fellow Fit Kids/Fit Teens dancers and Instructors I wouldn’t

have been able to get on to that stage and dance my heart out. That, and all the hard-work and training made this happen”.

Not only did Jordan triumph, but Fit Kids/Fit Teens brought home many awards.

Fourteen-year old Hannah Kryzwda from Castletown along with her partner Aine Carolan were thrilled when they were ranked 5th in the world for their under16yrs Duos

routine. “With hard work and support, anything can be done” said Hanna. Emily Fitzgerald, April Nolan and Claudia from Lucan were also celebrating as their Crew also achieved Finalist awards. The Fit Kids/Fit Teens Hip Hop Battle Crew also made it to the top four in the world so they were thrilled.

Last year, one of their young Dancers Gustas Geciauskas(8yrs old)

brought back gold for Ireland in the Break Dance section so the School is delighted to return home victorious once again.

Lucan/Celbridge Instructor Ciara Moran is so proud of the School’s achievements.

“The children and Instructors have worked so hard and were so proud to represent their country. It was extremely competitive and the standard was through the roof. They were wonderful Ambassadors. We are overwhelmed by the lovely letters of support from TD’s and Councillors, the media and public” she said.

5K RÁS RÁTH CÚIL ENTERPRISE EVENT

300 people of all ages and fitness levels went to Commercials GAA Club to take part in a Bank of Ireland sponsored 5k fun run under the supervision of none other than Operation Transformation’s Dr. Eva. It was especially encouraging to see children take part in this run and fantastic to see families running together. There were some great tips from Olympic champion Michael Carruth, hurlers Eoghan O’Donnell and Eoin Murphy; and

fantastic performances by local musicians in the making and Dancity stars.

SLIMMING WORLD IS “IS MY LIFE LINE”

Sharon Walsh first joined Slimming World St Anne’s Bohernabreena in January 2013, like hundreds of other people she walked into that group very nervous and she felt a bit embarrassed that she was so heavy.

The consultant Miriam O’Shea made Sharon feel so welcome, she explained the plan to her and she went home & got going but Sharon wasn’t 100% committed to losing weight yet....

The main reason Sharon joined was because she had tried so many other weight loss plans over the years, & had lost a bit but it was never something she could maintain and so Sharon gained back what she had lost & a bit more.

She had 2 small girls and Sharon didn’t want them to think it was ok to be so unhealthy. She avoided going out to things as Sharon never had nice clothes to wear and felt awful in herself & she was only a young woman.

That first 1&1/2 years in slimming world, Sharon wasn’t really fully committed... She went up and down on the scales, but Miriam kept encouraging her & most important there was never any judgement in the group.

In August 2014 Sharon had a long chat with her sister, & she decided right ‘I need to give this a proper go’.

So Sharon started staying for group every week, and

I knew that slimming world was the plan for me , we were invited into group and I couldn’t believe my ears 3 lbs , 4 lbs and 7 lbs all in one week the place was buzzing . At the end Sharon spent time with me setting in a target , I was a,so given details of support through out the week , which I thought was great that I wasn’t alone for the week ahead of me . If I’m honest I was horrified at what the scales said , but I was reassured by Sharon that I’d never see that number again . I was also given details of a closed Facebook group for members only for recipes and tips throughout the week , I could not wait to get started !

I went home and read the books in my pack back to back and ate delicious fulfilling meals all week , I really enjoyed the week . Stepping on the scales and seeing that I had lost 6 lbs I couldn’t believe it . From that moment on I believed in myself , and said yes I can do this . I have lost 3 stone 1 lb so far and I feel more happy, confident and full of life and as my children say , I’m in much better humour now days . I now go walking

The book echoes an era of social and cultural uprising in Ireland as the country began dancing the weekends away to the sounds of showbands in newly-built ballrooms.

Ron Woods weaves a spell of intrigue in his story ‘The Ghost of Dickie Rock’ while Fred Molloy remembers stories of expeditions down the country where Butch Moore saw cattle and sheep for the first time.

Mischief was in the air as band members pulled the singer’s leg on what would happen if the animals should ever get together in the same field.

Needless to say there was an incident which brought the whole pretense tumbling down in laughter.

Declan Gowran shares his first crush in his story ‘A Cycle Of Love’ and recalls how this older girl in his life grew up to marry a man who knocked her of her bicycle as she cycled home from a dance.

David Fegan was wrapped up in radio and receptions long before most people in Ireland were on his frequency and found ways of hearing those first strains of rock ’n’ roll as they entered Ireland via Radio Caroline, Radio Luxembourg and the other pirate sources.

Clontarf-born Maeve Edwards’ story tells of the moment her dream night out wasn’t the Ballroom of Romance experienced she had hoped for in her romantic expedition to Kerry.

Cathal Gunning from Blackrock writes a story from a drummer’s perspective and how he passed on the sticks in search of love.

Greystones resident Frances Browner was brought up in Dublin but spent much of her holidays in the Cloghan-Ferbane area of Offaly where she soon graduated from

Ceili to Carnival Girl.

Dubliner Maurice Crowley was a close friend of Butch Moore and recalls scary nights travelling from the North during the ‘Troubles.”

Co-editors PJ Cunningham and Dr Joe Kearney trawled the country over the past year to bring Ireland’s showband stories together in one book.

In all, there are 70 contributions contained in this social and cultural review of the time.

“From The Candy Store To The Galtymore is a collection with twists in every turn – stories of romance, of chance meetings and tales that are funny and maybe even mischievous,” said PJ. “All human life gathered for the weekly dances in what was a cultural shift away from the more formal céilís which held sway up until then.

“The showband dances were modern and slightly more brash occasions than the country had been used to but, if anything, the number of stories of love and loss, rows and ructions, fun and games grew in the new environment.

“The book looks at this era from left of centre and collects the forgotten, overlooked or rarely-told stories of that time.”

The sources are mainly ordinary folk with some interesting insights from singers, musicians and band managers as well.

It is available all over the country from this week and is published by Ballpoint Press.

HOW HUNDREDS LOCAL TEENAGERS ARE PLANNING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESSES IN SOUTH DUBLIN Minister Pat Breen launches the country’s biggest student enterprise programme with the Local Enterprise Offices

An estimated 22,000 secondary school students from 620 Irish schools, including 750 students from 16 local secondary schools in South Dublin, are learning about the world of business by setting up their own enterprises through the Student Enterprise Programme with the Local Enterprise Offices.

The Minister of State for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Pat Breen T.D. visited the school of an award-winning teenage entrepreneur, to officially launch the 2017/2018 Student Enterprise Programme, which is the biggest enterprise education initiative of its kind in the country.

The programme is run locally every year by Local Enterprise Office South and 16 schools from the county took part last year.

launch, Minister Breen visited Coláiste Chill Mhantáin in Wicklow, where 16-year-old Cillian Scott is a fifth-year student.

Back in May, Scott won the Intermediate Category at the National Student Enterprise Awards in Croke Park for ‘Scott Engine Tables,’ a company which transforms car, truck and tank engines into furniture.

Minister Breen said: “Since the Student Enterprise Programme began in 2003, more than 150,000 students have benefitted and we want to keep nurturing Ireland’s future entrepreneurs and business leaders in the years to come. Entrepreneurship is the backbone of the Irish economy and initiatives such as the Student Enterprise Programme are key to fostering a more enterprising culture.

I would encourage principals and teachers to get in touch with their Local Enterprise Office, to find out how

they can get involved in the next Student Enterprise Programme.”

Michael Nevin is the Chair of the Enterprise Education Committee with the Local Enterprise Offices which runs the Student Enterprise Programme. Welcoming the official launch of this year’s programme by Minister Breen he said: “The Student Enterprise Programme enables thousands of students to explore the world of business, starting in the classroom. This is a very practical programme for second-level students, made possible thanks to the support of schools, principals and teachers in every county and local authority area.”

Praising the teachers and local schools involved in the programme, Des English, Senior Enterprise Development Officer with the Local Enterprise Office South Dublin, said: “The Student Enterprise Awards

encourages and enables students to take on the world of business and develop an entrepreneurial mind-set. Local Enterprise Office South Dublin works with schools to help foster an enterprising culture in the classroom and nurture

the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

At the national launch, the Minister was joined by student entrepreneurs and representatives from Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, the Local Enterprise Offices, Enterprise Ireland and the

local authorities.
