Some Leaving Cert students not getting Child Benefit - because of their age

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West John Curran is calling on the Social Protection Minister to Reinstate Child Benefit Payments to all children over 18 and under 19 who are in full time second level Education.

From January 2010, Child Benefit was no longer paid in respects to children over 18 years of age. The payment continues to be paid

in respect of children up to their 18th birthday who are in full-time education or who have a disability.

Commenting on the issue Deputy Curran said: “The Child Benefit Payment must recognise the fact that many students are older leaving school because they may have participated in Transition Year and started school at age five.

I am calling in the

Minister to extend the Child Benefit payment beyond 18 years, to include all Leaving Certificate students.

The current age limit is unfair and divisive, and I will continue to raise this issue with the newly appointed Minister for Social Protection, Regina Doherty so as she reviews this unfair situation for students and their families.

On this basis, there is no reason why the extension shouldn’t also apply to school students who have entered their 19th year.

The 18 year age limit might have worked in the past when children tended to start school aged four.

The current cut-off point is extremely detrimental to families who are struggling financially, particularly one parent families,” concluded Deputy Curran.

The 22 cases which were reported by the Child Care Law Reporting Project highlight a number of concerning issues with regard to child protection and welfare issues before the courts in Ireland.

The reporting project was established by the government in 2012 to provide independent, anonymised reporting on child-related cases before the courts.

These main issues include: • Agencies not working together as demonstrated by a lack of joint interviewing by An Garda Siochana and social workers • Complex cases before the courts taking too long to be resolved – sometimes months or years • Not hearing the voice of the child in an adequate manner • Children being sent to other jurisdictions because of a lack of

appropriate in-patient psychiatric facilities and agencies not working together to address psychiatric/mental health needs

Interim CEO Caroline O’Sullivan said today: “Childhood doesn’t stand still. Each day, week and month without resolution of issues causes distress, upset and uncertainty for children and their parents. Cases before the courts, like those outlined in the report, need to be dealt with in a timely manner”.

“It is imperative that all organisations work together to protect and support vulnerable children.

Joint Interviewing is recognised best practice and is vital for children who have suffered the trauma of sexual abuse in order to avoid further upset.

not good enough.

“The cases reported highlight the complex nature of dealing with child protection and welfare cases before the courts. In addition to addressing the concerns outlined above, more preventative measures are needed to reduce the number of cases going to court; these include timely intervention, family support and mental health supports.”

PARENTS TO BENEFIT FROM 25% INCREASE IN BACK TO SCHOOL ALLOWANCE

Parents are set to benefit from a 25% increase in the Back to School Allowance”.

That’s according to Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor.

Councillor Brian Lawlor said “My colleague the Fine Gael Leader, Leo Varadkar, has increased the clothing & footwear allowance for eligible school children, in what was one of his final acts as Minister for Social Protection.”

“We all know the financial pressures on families during the summer and into September as children head back to school.

“From July, this 25% increase in the Back to School Allowance will help to ease the financial pressure on hard pressed families.

“As Mr Varadkar has said himself, this is a signal of the Government’s renewed commitment to reducing child poverty, something I know he is very determined to progress.

“The Back to School Clothing

and Footwear Allowance is increasing from €100 to €125 for children aged 4-11 and from €200 to €250 for children aged 12 years and over.

“It means that some 194,000 children across the country will benefit from this increase of up to €50.

“Another change introduced

by Mr Varadkar was to adjust income limits in order to ensure that increases in social welfare announced in Budget 2017 won’t affect people’s entitlement to the Allowance.

“The increase to the Allowance brings the total allocation for the Allowance this year to €47.4 million, €10 million more than what was originally proposed for 2017.

“The additional costs will be met from within the Department of Social Protection’s allocation for 2017, in which there is an underspend due to rapidly falling unemployment levels.

“This shows that the benefits of job creation spread far beyond the people taking up the jobs. It means more money to improve social services and social supports.

Fine Gael is determined to use the benefits of our recovering economy to support those who need it most.

“I encourage parents to check out http://www. welfare.ie for more information on the Back to School Allowance. The majority of payments will be made automatically with no application form required and the Department will notify these customers of their entitlements shortly.

Customers who do not receive notification of an automated payment will need to make a written application.

“The Allowance will be paid in mid-July to give parents plenty of time to prepare financially for the new school year.”

Mayor unveils Memorial Bench dedicated to the memory of Joe Connolly Mayor Guss O’Connell in the presence of members of the Connolly Family and the President of the National Community Games, Gerard Davenport, unveiled a memorial plaque dedicated to Joe Connolly, National Community Games founder. The event took place in Tymon Park and marked the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the National Community Games.

Born in 1922, Joe Connolly first developed the idea of an organisation to provide healthy pursuits for children in his native Walkinstown in 1967. The initial games were held a year later and 3,000 children from 24 areas of Dublin participated in preliminary competitions with the finals being held at the John F Kennedy stadium in Santry.

Today, the Aldi Community Games caters to

160,000 children and approximately 20,000 volunteers in about 575 areas throughout 28 counties. There is now also a culture and arts section so children get an opportunity to experience an even wider range of activities.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mayor O’Connell said; “South Dublin County Council values the great contribution that Sports and Recreation brings to our communities and I am delighted to have been asked by Cllr.

O’ Connor and Cllr. Duff to host an event to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Community Games. As one of my last events as Mayor, I have been given the opportunity to honour Joe Connolly with a memorial bench here in Tymon Park which is the home of so much sporting activity in the local area”

INTEGRATION AND INCLUSION ARE CENTRAL TO SUPPORTING IRELAND’S MUSLIM COMMUNITY

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade, Darragh O’Brien TD has said that a longterm strategy designed to promote the integration and inclusion of the Islamic community in Ireland, will aid the ongoing effort to stop the spread of radical Islam and terrorism.

Deputy O’Brien made his comments following an informative meeting which he with Shaykh Dr. Umar Al-Qadri, founding

Chair of the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council.

O’Brien commented, “Ireland has become a much more diverse, pluralistic and outward looking society, thanks in part to those who have come to make Ireland their home, including the sizable Muslim population living here.

“There is an onus on the Government to assist new minorities to integrate fully into Irish society and to promote an Ireland that

is inclusive and tolerant of people of all faiths and none.

“We have all too often witnessed the appalling destruction and loss of life at the hands of religious extremism and we cannot assume that Ireland is immune from facing such atrocities.

He added, “Mr Shaykh Dr. Umar Al-Qadri reiterated the pressing need for greater dialogue and peaceful engagement with the Islamic community in order to

Ireland’s organisation for people parenting alone and sharing parenting has responded to a report by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection on the Position of Lone Parents in Ireland which formed a significant part of the Committee’s

It includes a series of proposals to help alleviate the difficulties often faced by those parenting alone or sharing parenting, most of which refer to One Family’s research, presentations to the Committee, and Pre-

throughout the extensive analyses undertaken by One Family in advance of, and subsequent to, the reforms to the One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) announced in Budget 2012, including case studies which highlighted the direct experience of many parents who were impacted by the reforms.

Karen Kiernan, One Family CEO, comments: “It is heartening that the voices of lone parents have been heard by the Committee through our continued, determined representation. One Family most recently presented to the Joint Oireachtas Committee in January 2017 where we spoke about the multiple challenges and barriers that lone parents often face in accessing education or work. The Committee have reiterated

and supported what One Family has evidenced in policy work and submissions for the past decade; the main challenges facing lone parents are child poverty, housing costs, availability of affordable childcare, obtaining child maintenance payments, job activation, access to education and changes to the One-Parent Family Payment (OFP). We will continue to fight for the voices of people parenting alone to be heard, and to call for urgent implementation of the proposals of the Committee.”

Valerie Maher, One Family Policy & Programmes Manager, states: “Lone parents have waited long enough. Action is needed to ensure that Government provide a range of measures – including, but

not confined to, housing support, childcare access, educational prospects and in-work supports – to empower one-parent families to break free from long-term deprivation and poverty. We acknowledge the extensive work which has gone into the compilation of this report. The next step is ensuring that Budget 2018, and beyond, contains significant measures which can resource these recommendations and make them a reality. In particular, we support the Committee’s recommendations to broaden access to, and increase supports available to those in receipt of, Job Seeker’s Transition (JST) and the call for the establishment of a state body to seek and pursue maintenance payments.”

problem of low income, coupled with the cost of education, energy and lack of services, have made life more challenging for an increasing number of households both in and out of work.

Last year 130,000 calls for help were received by SVP. Its members also regularly visit individuals and families that are experiencing the stress and challenge of rising rents, the threat of homelessness and making do with poor quality and inadequate housing.

The Society is calling for a continued prioritisation of investment in services over tax cuts in Budget 2018 and future budgets. It says that a history of underinvestment in services has led to an over reliance on the market in the provision of essential services such as social housing. This approach has contributed to inadequate public infrastructure, impacting the extent to which people can take up employment, make work pay and stay out of poverty.

The SVP Pre-Budget submission entitled ‘Bridging the gap; Investing for an equitable future’ sets out 25 ways in which shortterm action and longerterm investment could help rebalance inequality in Irish society.

Its proposal includes critical and practical action that can be taken in Budget 2018 including: * Increasing investment to fund the building and acquiring of social housing units; * Increasing Rent Supplement and Housing Assistance Payment in line with market rents; * Publishing the research and consultation on minimum energy efficiency standards in the rented sector; * Ending the practice of ‘voluntary’ contributions to schools by providing adequate funding to schools; * Bringing the SUSI maintenance grant back in line with the cost of living and restore the distance of the adjacent grant to 24km from the current distance of 45km;

NEW SOCIAL PROTECTION MINISTER NEEDS COMPASSION AND UNDERSTANDING Sinn Féin Deputy Social Protection Spokesperson Denise Mitchell TD says she hopes the incoming Social Protection Minister Regina Doherty will show more compassion and understanding when it comes to dealing with the most vulnerable members of our society than her predecessor.

PALMERSTOWN LIBRARY DIGITAL HUB OFFICIALLY OPENED

The Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cllr. Guss O’Connell has officially opened the new Palmerstown Library Digital Hub. Located at Palmerstown Shopping Centre on Kennelsfort Road, the Palmerstown Library Digital Hub is small but beautifully equipped library hub space connecting with the community.

Speaking at the official opening Mayor O’Connell said “At the heart of this library hub is a vision of a service which is both

personal and collective, a civic hub around which communities in Palmerstown can learn, read, enjoy cultural offerings, and find a welcoming democratic community space.

The community have waited a long time for this wonderful facility and I want to thank in particular our Chief Executive Danny McLoughlin for his commitment to this and the many community-based facilities he has prioritised across the County. Likewise, I

All public library users now have online access via a single posting platform to a suite of online resources comprising e-books, e-audiobooks, e-magazines/ journals, online languages, e-learning courses and online newspapers.

This will be a community hub for the local area; a living room for the community.

Customers can come in and browse books and magazines, read newspapers and surf the ‘net. The hub holds a meeting space for small groups, study space, a space for learning, a space for ICT on-line training, a selection of magazines and a community notice board.

There will also be a wide range of events from story-

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Mid-West Eoin Ó Broin has contacted Irish Water outlining Sinn Féin’s objection to proposals to locate a bio solid storage unit in Greenogue.

Deputy Ó Broin said: “I made a submission to Irish Water last week strongly objecting to plans for a regional biosolids storage facility for Greater Dublin in Greenogue Business Park, Co Dublin.

“This site is entirely unsuitable for such a project.

Irish Water clearly did not take into account a number of important criteria when drawing up its shortlist of locations for such a facility.

“The proposed site is located too close to Rathcoole and Newcastle Villages. These are large residential areas and the residents and local businesses there would be negatively impacted by the odour coming from such a facility.

“The submission outlines

a number of other issues with the site.

These include planning issues, the risk to the environment and the potential impact of such a facility on local food processing plants.

“I called on Irish Water to review the criteria used in the selection of the five shortlisted sites and to produce a new shortlist based on the legitimate concerns Sinn Féin has raised about the viability of locating such a facility in Greenogue.”

The Palmerstown Digital Library Hub serves a population of 11,216 people and so we are delighted to be able to serve this community. 75% of the population are over 18 years, with 8% young adults and 17% under 13 years of age.

Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg at an event to mark the 30th birthday of the Erasmus programme, the Dublin MEP said that young people should not only read about Europe but also experience it.

“The Erasmus programme, established in 1987 allows students living in the EU the opportunity to study in another European country during their time at university.

Over the past 30 years over 88,000 Irish students and teachers have participated in the programme.”

“Students who go on an Erasmus exchange have a great opportunity to visit different countries. The programme allows students to experience these countries as opposed to just hearing and learning about them.”

“All universities in Ireland offer an Erasmus programme.

Figures show that more than twice as many EU students come into Ireland for Erasmus, as Irish students go to other EU countries. On average 3,500 Irish students travel to universities in other EU countries, while about 8,000 students from universities in other EU countries come to Ireland.”

“The Erasmus programme is one of the most successful EU programmes. Its popularity continues to grow.

Between 2014 and 2020 over €14.7 billion will be provided by the EU. There are great opportunities for Irish students to experience other EU countries. I encourage all students who are interested to speak with their University authorities about participating in the programme” concluded MEP Hayes.

GOVERNMENT STANDS BY WHILE RAPID-BUILD HOMES FACE FURTHER DEADLINE DELAY Government’s reduced target of 173 Rapid Build Homes now in jeopardy

Dublin Mid-West Fianna Fáil TD and Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Housing and Homelessness, John Curran has said that the Government is failing on its own further reduced targets for its Rapid Build Programme while neglecting some of Dublin’s most vulnerable people.

The latest information received by the Deputy through Parliamentary Question has revealed that to-date just 22 rapid build units have been completed despite the Government’s commitment to complete 1000 in Dublin by the end of 2017.

Commenting on the information Deputy Curran

said, “The Government has continued to push the message that housing is its number one priority yet the results of a series of action plans to address the crisis to date have been extremely disappointing.

“The Government’s Housing Action Plan which was launched almost 12 months ago, pledged to deliver 200 rapid build units in the last quarter of 2016 and a further 1000 across the four Dublin local authorities in 2017.

“The information I have received indicates that in reality a total of just 173 of the promised 1000 units will be delivered in 2017. While, completion of four projects located in Dublin’s Finglas,

Cherry Orchard, Belcamp and Drimnagh – which were set to be built in 2016 have now been revised to quarter three of this year.

This suggests that momentum is being lost in the effort to deal with the crisis in homelessness across our Capital.

“For some time now, we have been in the midst of a national housing crisis and the slow pace at which this scheme is being developed is symptomatic of the government’s appalling response.

“Despite a succession of grand plans, which Minister Coveney has been rolling out over the past 10 months, the families who were promised

to be relocated in 2017 remain homeless, living in hotel accommodation and with no long-term solution in sight.

“The Government needs to get to grips with the housing

crisis. Minister Coveney needs to accept that his plan is failing and that corrective action is needed to fulfil the target set out under the scheme. At this rate, it is questionable that

the 173 that are currently said to be advancing through construction out of the promised 1,000 Rapid Build Homes, will even be delivered,” said Deputy Curran.

“With just 215 shared cars operating in Dublin and

Cork currently, Ireland is lagging behind other small European countries in terms of provision and take-up of this service. Switzerland, for example, has a fleet over 3000 cars, while Italy, Spain, Germany and France also have much higher numbers of car sharing users.

“Car sharing reduces car dependency, congestion, noise and air pollution, and frees up land traditionally used for parking spaces.

Each shared car replaces approximately 15 private cars, as well as increasing use of public transport.

“GoCar has been providing car sharing in Ireland since 2008, and has over 10,000

people registered, but with cars in just two of the major cities in Ireland, penetration of the market is limited.

“I am calling on local authorities to engage with service providers to make available space for additional cars. Culturally, there is still a leap to be made with regard to the concept, but with greater numbers of European citizens living and working in Dublin, their habits around car use can and should influence ours. The benefits to car sharing are numerous, for commuters, the environment and the state. Sharing gets you further.”

This year €57m is going into clubs and activities for our young people.

It is a 15% increase, but follows years of cutbacks. As Minister I will be arguing that we must see further rises to reverse the cuts in full.

Through transitional

justice the country is beginning to come to terms with dark chapters in our history. This work will continue. The process will at times be complex, difficult and uncomfortable but we owe it to survivors, families and future generations to confront and accept the truth.

As Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, as an independent feminist and as a lifelong campaigner on social issues I will continue to work with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and other colleagues on these and other issues.”

ICCL welcomes UN Human Rights Committee finding against Ireland in Abortion Case

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties today welcomed the ruling of the UN Human Rights Committee in the case of Whelan v. Ireland. The ruling finds that the effect of Ireland’s abortion laws was to subject a woman to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and violated her rights to privacy and to non-discrimination, in circumstances where her pregnancy was identified as involving fatal foetal impairment.

This ruling follows a similar decision last year by the UN Human Rights Committee in the case Mellet v. Ireland in 2016.

ICCL Executive Director, Liam Herrick said, “Cases where the UN Human Rights Committee finds violations of human rights are rare and are highly significant at an international level. We have now a further authoritative adjudication by a leading UN body that Irish abortion law is incompatible with human rights standards.

The link between Irish law and violations of women’s

human rights was a key message which ICCL and others conveyed to the Citizens Assembly during its recent deliberations, and the recommendations of the Assembly demonstrate the importance which the members attached to respecting women’s human rights. The people of Ireland must now be given the opportunity to ensure that this egregious situation comes to an end through a referendum to repeal Article 40.3.3.”

This decision will increase international pressure on Ireland to reform its abortion laws. Mr. Herrick went on to say:“This case is yet another reminder that Irish women and their families still have to resort to legal processes to assert their basic rights.

Ms Whelan and her husband deserve immense credit for the courage and determination they have shown to proceed with this case and to tell their harrowing story in public; but we must ensure that Irish women and girls should not have to take this difficult road to achieve their basic human rights.”

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West, John Curran has received confirmation from the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, through a Parliamentary Question that the planned Luas to Lucan has not been included in the Government’s recent Mid Term Capital Plan (20162021).

Commenting on the issue, John Curran said; “I was hoping that the Government would revisit the planned Luas Line to Lucan in this year’s Mid Term Capital Review considering the traffic

congestion in Lucan, the N4, the M50 and the Greater Dublin Area. It is very disappointing the Government has decided not to include the Luas to Lucan in this year’s Capital Plan 2016 – 2021.”

“The Minister has informed me that an eastwest Luas to Lucan is envisaged for the longer term transport plan for the Greater Dublin Area.

This is published in the Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area covering the period 2016 to 2035 and all dependent on the availability of

funding.”

“It looks like it could be 20 years before even the planning process begins on the Lucan Luas project and that is simply not good enough, while traffic chaos grips commuters in Lucan.

“Accident’s on the M50 can cause city-wide traffic chaos, it is clear that the lack of good quality public transport in Dublin is a huge factor in the cause of gridlock when there is an accident.

If the economy continues to grow, this can only mean one thing – more

cars on our roads! Without the provision of quality public transport like the Luas and Metro, traffic in Dublin is only going to worsen.”

“To not advance the planning process of this project is the wrong decision and shows a worrying lack of vision for public transport strategy in our Capital City.”

“This is short sighted. I plan to continue to raise the issue of transport infrastructure for the Greater Dublin Area in Dáil Éireann,” concluded Deputy Curran.

Vehicle History experts Cartell.ie report that the Association of British Insurers (ABI) in the UK are no longer using Category C and Category D vehicle write-off classification in their new Voluntary Code of Practice (COP) for the industry.

Following a long review the new system will retain the same Category A and Category B categorisations.

However Category C and Category D designations will no longer be used.

The new system will focus on first establishing the level of damage to a vehicle from a technical perspective, before making any commercial decision relating to the Pre-Accident Value (PAV) of the vehicle.

This has huge consequences for an Irish buyer as the level of damage sustained will now be more evident.

The new categorisation system will be as follows:

Category A Scrap– This vehicle is deemed not suitable to be repaired.

Must be crushed without any parts being removed.

Category vehicle suitable Usable recycled.

B Break – The is deemed not to be repaired. parts can be

Category S: Structural Repairable – Repairable vehicle which has sustained damage to any part of the structural frame or chassis and the insurer/ self-insured owner has decided not to repair the vehicle.

Category N: Non-Structural Repairable – Repairable vehicle which has not sustained damage to the structural frame or chassis and the insurer/ self-insured owner has decided not to repair the vehicle.

These changes have been made to standardise the codes by the level of damage sustained rather than by repair cost.

Of those 1,545 vehicles (59.42%) had been categorised as Cat D in the UK and 980 as Category C (37.69%).

At present a voluntary system of notification is in place but for years Cartell. ie has called for regulation which will place the procedure on a statutory footing.

a pay by weight system for disposal of waste.

In information obtained by Deputy Curran through Parliamentary Question, the Minister for the Environment has confirmed that a voluntary agreement entered into with stakeholders from the waste disposal industry will expire on July 1st 2017.

Furthermore, it appears that Minister Naughten will not be intervening to protect households from a hike in bill.

“When the pay-by-weight system for bin charges was initially proposed 18 months ago, the then Minister, Alan Kelly was adamant that the new regime would result in 87% of households experiencing a reduction in their waste bills.

However, it was not too long before we heard of many examples of massive increases in bills despite no change in service,”

Deputy Curran explained.

“In response to the extensive media coverage on the matter last summer, a voluntary agreement was entered into with providers in the industry.

This agreement provided for a comprehensive assessment of the planned introduction of a pay-byweight charging system.

“A year on and still no tangible solution has been found, while the agreement itself is due to expire in 2 weeks’ time.

“There is now a growing sense of fear and frustration amongst families in relation to the possibility of these charges being reintroduced under their noses. The waste disposal companies are yet to effectively outline why families are likely to experience a massive increase in their bills when it was previously stated that the opposite would occur under this

payment system.

He added, “I expressed my concerns directly with the Minister earlier this week and pressed on the need to negotiate with waste management companies to ensure that there is full transparency and fair competition for consumers.

“The bottom line is that every measure necessary must be explored in order to avoid re-visiting massive increases in bills for no difference in service,” concluded Deputy Curran.

(Picture: Conor McCabe) Leaving Certificate students can jump straight into a career in accountancy from September 2017, on an ‘earn-asyou-learn’ programme with Accounting Technicians Ireland.

The Accounting Technician Praktikum is a practical route to a rewarding career in accountancy where participants put their learning into practice, under the mentorship of a qualified accounting technician or accountant.

“I am pleased with my decision to do this programme, rather than attending third-level college full time,” says Emma Cameron, who is working at HLB Ryan and studying at BFEI.

This year the programme is expected to create 120 new jobs in the Republic of Ireland and is running in partnership with partnership with with Blackrock Further Education Institute.

The academic side of the programme gives participants a solid grounding in critical academic theory such as financial accounting, taxation, law and ethics, as well as wider business know-how such as management.

The Accounting Technician Praktikum is an Apprenticeship in Development, and is due to become a National Apprenticeship in the Summer, subject to QQI validation.

“The practical nature of the programme, the salary and the fully funded fees make the Accounting Technician Praktikum particularly appealing to Leaving Certificate students who prefer learning by experience to full-time college education,” said Gillian Doherty, Chief Operations Officer at ATI. “When students complete the programme, they will have a strong, indemand accountancy qualification, two years of solid work experience and the opportunity to progress to Chartered Accountancy.”

The jobs are available in industry, practice and the public sector, with organisations ranging from Big Four accountancy firms to SMEs. The programme provides a real alternative for Leaving Certificate students who prefer practical training to a full-time college course.

It is also an attractive option for existing employees and mature learners who would like a career in accounting.

“The class is small and the lecturers have plenty of time to help everybody,” adds Emma, who joined the programme in September last year after finishing her Leaving Certificate.

With mentorship on both the college and workplace side of the programme, participants can quickly grasp the concepts they learn in college and then master them in the workplace day to day.

“There is no typical day in the job and the variety of work and exposure to different business sectors is adding real value and depth to my experience,” said Aaron Murray, who joined the programme after completing his Leaving Certificate last year.

“The work is demanding but enjoyable.

There is always someone willing to lend a hand if you ever need help with anything. You will not get this experience from just a college course.”

This year the programme is running in partnership with BFEI, Bray Institute of Further Education, Rathmines College of Further Education, Coláiste Íde College of Further Education, Cork College of Commerce, Monaghan Institute.

launched their very own book in front of a crowd packed with proud family and friends.

The students took part in the Emu Ink Schools’ Publishing Programme; giving each and every child the chance to have her story featured in a

published book.

Principal of St Louise’s, Kathryn Crowley who hails from Knocklyon, was thrilled for her school to participate and spoke of her delight to see so many students engage their creativity and embrace

the programme.

She said: “The Emu Ink Schools’ Publishing Programme has been a really positive experience for us. It gave our children a real and authentic audience for their writing. The fact that they were going to

become published authors really spurred them on and encouraged them to do their very best work.”

“We hope that this programme will spur the students on to do even greater things in the world of literature and publishing. We hope that

this is the first of many anthologies and that this will become a tradition in our school.”

In the circumstances therefore, we see no reason why your son would not have a cause of action against his Employers and once he is well enough, he should consult with his Solicitor with a view to commencing an action. Question: My son started a job in a large factory just three months ago. Unfortunately, he was involved in an accident on the factory floor when a forklift driver went over his foot. He has some broken bones in the foot and will have to wear a hard boot for some weeks.

He has not been paid while out of work.

His Employers have said that it is his own fault as he was told not to be in that section of the factory. However, this was his first job and he was only doing what he was told by his supervisor. Would he have a claim?

Answer: This was a very unfortunate accident particularly when your son had only just started his first job.

I am quite sure that your son has a good cause of action against his Employers for

Answer: This was an extremely unfortunate occurrence and, the driver has broken the law. There may be any number of reasons why this driver did not stop and remain at the scene of the accident. There may have been a question of drink driving and certainly, the possibility of no insurance cover being in place on the vehicle. It may also have been a stolen vehicle but if so the Gardai should at least have some record of

this. Perhaps it is at least fortunate that the injuries were not more serious. You do indeed have a claim but it will be against the MIBI (Motors Insurers Bureau of Ireland).

Injured parties are entitled to claim compensation from the MIBI arising out of a road traffic accident where the driver of the other vehicle is either uninsured or untraced. The procedure to pursue a claim is slightly different and certainly takes a great deal longer. Detailed enquires have to be made to try to find the vehicle or driver and this can take time. Effectively, all of us pay a percentage of our annual insurance premium towards the fund to compensate the victims of road traffic accidents in these circumstances. The MIBI are the first port of call in pursuing a claim and will need to be put on notice as soon as you are satisfied that the vehicle is untraced and uninsured. In circumstances where the vehicle is untraced, the enquiries have to establish that the accident took place. If there are any witnesses, you will need to disclose these to the MIBI. You will also need to give as much information as possible remember to the Gardai to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Hopefully, you have already documented your injuries by way of attendance at hospital or your GP as this will be very important. You should not repair the damage to your vehicle until such time as the MIBI have a chance to look at the damage as corroboration of the incident. Remember also, that if you have comprehensive insurance on your vehicle then, the MIBI will not compensate you for the damage to your vehicle, only for personal injuries. We would recommend

firstly that you notify your own insurance company of the incident and then attend with a Solicitor with a view to commencing the process to pursue a claim for personal injuries. We wish you the best of luck.

Question: I work in an open plan office and I am usually the first into work in the mornings. Recently, I slipped on what turned out to be a wet floor. The cleaners come in during the night and mop the floors. On this occasion, the floors had not been properly dried. I could not see the wet surface as the tiles are light in colour. I came down very hard on my right knee and have been in a lot of pain since.

Would I have a claim against my Employer or against the cleaning company?

Answer: This was again a very unfortunate accident but not unusual.

Subject to making the usual enquires, it would seem to us that you have a perfectly good claim against your Employer and the cleaning company. You should make sure that you report the incident to your Employers and have your injuries documented either with your GP or in the A&E at your local hospital. It may well be that your Employers will have an indemnity from the cleaning company in relation to these type of accidents. It would be important for you to attend with a Solicitor as it can be a complex area to establish who is the correct person to sue. You do however have a claim for personal injuries and in the circumstances we strongly recommend that you attend with a Solicitor as soon as possible with a view to giving instructions.

A RECEPTION FOR TALLAGHT CHORAL SOCIETY ON THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY Last week the Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cllr.

Guss O’Connell presented a plaque to Tallaght Choral Society to mark their 50th anniversary.

Formed in 1967, Tallaght Choral Society began as a modest church choir based in the Dominican

Priory, originally under the direction of founder Fr. Donal Sweeney. Through a succession of musical directors, the choir began to tackle more challenging pieces, with their first performance of Handel’s Messiah occurring in 1971.

Today they are a unit over one hundred strong who all

work tirelessly to deliver their performances, getting opportunities to collaborate with many prolific composers, orchestras and choirs.

At the reception, Tallaght Choral Society treated attendees to some pieces from their choral repertoire.

One such

piece All in the April Evening makes use of words by local poet and novelist Katharine Tynan.

Attendees commented on the strength and beauty of the piece which was further enhanced by the quality of the acoustics in the council chamber.

“MY PASSION FOR MMA HAS BROUGHT ME BACK TO THE MMA GAME”

Straight Blast Gym Tallaght already has a stellar reputation as a ‘family friendly’ gym for all fitness levels from novice to professional – and staff at the facility are embracing that ethos.

SBG Tallaght head coach Dave Roche, who has won several titles in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Kickboxing, has been part of the SBG set-up from the beginning and is keen to help grow the facility.

Dave was undefeated during his MMA career and he has now decided to focus on teaching and trying to get the best out of his students – whatever level they are at.

He said: “My passion for MMA has brought me back to the MMA game and now I specialises in teaching the pro team in SBG Tallaght.”

“Although I train the pro team, I also have

a passion for beginners taking up MMA, as only a small percentage of people actually compete!

Not only is Mixed Martial Arts great for selfdefence and getting fit, it is a fantastic platform for combatting mental health and wellbeing.”

World famous Mixed Martial Arts coach John Kavanagh has had a huge influence on the Tallaght gym since before it opened last year.

Dave, who met Coach Kavanagh in 1999, proudly recalls the day his former teammate, Conor McGregor, started at SBG as a special moment for the gym that has been made famous by the ‘Champ Champ’.

However, it is the local community and passionate local fighters that make SBG Tallaght different to other training facilities.

Dave said: “In SBG Tallaght we have the best coaches in the country with a team who are well equipped in coaching day 1 beginners all the way up to those who want to compete in martial arts on the biggest stage. We also pride ourselves on a low student-to-coach ratio, enabling our students to get the best from our coaches!”

The gym, which is located in the Glenabbey Complex on the Belgard Road runs classes including BJJ, Kickboxing, boxing, wrestling, Muay thai, MMA from 6.30am to 10pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 4pmon Saturdays to suit client needs.

SAGE ADVOCACY WELCOMES PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON RIGHTS OF VULNERABLE PEOPLE

Sage, the Support and Advocacy Service for Vulnerable Adults and Older People, has welcomed the launch of the new campaign to increase public awareness of abusive attitudes

and behaviours towards vulnerable people which was being launched by the National Safeguarding Committee (NSC).

Mervyn Taylor, Manager of Sage, said that the campaign will build on the

Rachel added ‘I had been thinking about joining Slimming World and a gym for a few months but hadn’t got the motivation to do it. That morning, I decided I was joining Slimming World Kilnamanagh and I made contact with Caroline.’

Caroline Mulhall, Slimming World Consultant encouraged a nervous Rachel from day one. Rachel commented ‘Caroline really helped ease my anxiety and asked about me, how I was feeling and what I would like to achieve.

We then went through the slimming world book, I was lucky that I understood the concept and was confident I would be able to lose weight, but I was still a little apprehensive.’ As weeks went by Rachel could see the pounds falling off by eating better and toning up at the gym, soon the apprehension disappeared.

Rachel had previously joined other weight

loss groups and hadn’t grasped it at all which resulted in giving up.

Slimming World gave Rachel the determination to succeed. She said ‘It took a few weeks to figure it all out, but soon it became second nature, and the back up support is still there each week from my consultant and my group. Also, the awards system in slimming world keeps me motivated and definitely keeps me focused.’

Slimming World has helped Rachel in so many ways, Rachel mentioned ‘I have started cooking and experimenting with different foods that I would never have tried before.’ At the start Rachel’s goal was to lose 6 stone in 52 weeks and she is nearly there, on week 48 Rachel has lost an astonishing 5 stone and 11 lbs.

In 48 weeks Rachel has lost an astonishing 5 stone and 11 lbs

NSC’s nationwide public opinion survey by Red C launched in April which indicated worrying levels of direct and indirect experience of abuse and a need for greater public awareness of what constitutes abuse.

“Raising public awareness about safeguarding forms a vital part of the chain in preventing abuses. Any vulnerable adult can be subject to abuse and as

this campaign highlights, abuse can be inflicted by family members; sometimes without an awareness that their behaviour and attitudes are abusive.

“Safeguarding of vulnerable adults will be promoted if a wide range of agencies and individuals work together to change attitudes and systems.

“It is also vital that

government responds effectively to the key messages contained in the campaign which relate to financial abuse, deprivation of liberty, chemical restraint and verbal abuse. In this context the emergence of all-party support for the Adult Safeguarding Bill 2017 is a welcome start from the Oireachtas but we have major concerns about the slow

pace of progressing and implementing legislation under this current government.

“Sage very much supports the call of the National Safeguarding Committee for an independent National Safeguarding Service, however, for this to be effective it is likely that there will need to be a trebling of resources” he said.

Marion Lane worked in Tallaght Sports Complex for 38 years and was involved in all areas but her main focus was teaching primary school children how to swim.

Paraic Kenny, Manager of Tallaght Sports Complex speaks of Marion with admiration and explains ‘Marion will always be a part of the place, she was so encouraging, resilient and treated the staff of Tallaght Sports Complex like a second family, taking us all under her wing’.

Marion from Kilnamanagh sadly passed away from cancer in March of this year, Paraic felt erecting a plaque would be most fitting. A group of work colleagues, family, Tallaght Swim Club and the community remembered Marion recently. A plaque in Marion’s memory was unveiled in the community facility in Balrothery in Tallaght.

We welcome everyone, regardless of what level you’re starting at. In TMA, it’s all about the individual’s journey, so you only have to live up to your own standards.

Throughout all the its success it has managed to maintain a close-knit feel which it prides itself on.

This year on the 2nd of September 2017 a number of young Athletes from TMA will fly out to Macedonia to represent Ireland at the WAKO Junior European Championships.

funds to help send these young athletes to represent Ireland. Dave Heffernan is the national coach and the TMA coach he stated “Qualifying to represent Ireland is a great achievement for these young athletes but it comes at great expense

to their families and we are trying to subsidise this trip as best possible”
