I
n 2019 Grace Lutheran College has launched their new Sporting Excellence Programs. In order to best cater for the needs of Grace students, the college has developed a holistic education program which is open to high performing students in Years 7 to 12 regardless of their chosen sport. “GLC Sporting GOALS creates a learning environment where young student athletes can flourish physically, technically, psychologically and socially,” sports director Tommy Peak said.

of experienced and qualified coaches. Playing Excellence Programs are year round programs and offer students an opportunity to extend their skills and teamwork with a focus placed on participation in co-curricular competitions. ree educational news site Kids News has become one of the fastest growing inclass literacy tools in Australia, chalking up four million page views in a year and attracting more than 180,000 registered student users. It has become a daily go-to literacy tool for teachers and a favourite at home and in the classroom for students in Years 3 to 8. Kidsnews.com.au explains a selection of daily news stories in appropriate language for children in a safe, isolated, online environment. Each story has a comprehension quiz and classroom activities linked to the national curriculum and is aimed at extending the child’s understanding of the topic. It began as a pilot program in Victoria and launched as a national site early last year. Kids News publisher Toni

KEEPING STUDENTS INFORMED SCHOOLS ARE EMBRACING A UNIQUE PROGRAM THAT USES NEWS AS A LEARNING TOOL Hetherington said schools had embraced the unique program that uses news as a learning tool. “This site has captured the imaginations of students and introduced them to news topics and information they never knew they were interested in, while improving their literacy skills at the same time,” Ms Hetherington said. “The kids are enjoying reading

news daily and improving their general knowledge and curiosity about the world around them.” Kidsnews.com.au combines text, glossary, video and images to help explain each story. An audio recording of each story helps students to follow the text as they read. The 2019 version has new features including a comprehensive topic list for key

Ms Hetherington said the kidsnews.com.au website would continue to be free in 2019 as part of News Corp Australia’s News in the Community program. Students and teachers are adding coding to their repertoire as schools face up to future challenges
A
technical revolution is transforming classrooms as teachers and students embrace the latest subject added to the Australian school curriculum — coding. Coding, which involves learning how computers think so they can be programmed in a language they understand, is now mandatory for all government and Catholic schools for students from Prep to Year 10. Students learn how to create digital solutions to problems and develop an understanding of computer systems, data and information — all important new skills increasingly in demand by industry and employers. And it is fun — coding allows kids to create their own apps and computer games. Hayley Markham, co-founder of Code Camp, which offers school holiday workshops, said coding had become an essential part of education. “As the world we live in has become increasingly digital, coding
is needed to understand the world we live in,” Ms Markham said. “Through learning this new way of thinking, students also develop creative problem solving skills that can be applied to any role, in any industry.” Ms Markham said no age was too young to learn coding and children as young as four could start with basic logic puzzles, games and activities. She said that although older students could pick up coding concepts more quickly, younger students who had more practise solving problems with code had a definite edge. But the mandatory introduction of coding and the rapid pace of technological change has posed some challenges for schools which
have had to bring teachers up to
speed with new skills and provide equipment and software to deliver effective coding lessons. “Though many schools are investing heavily into teaching coding and incorporating technology into their classroom, there are certainly some limitations, such as teacher skill and equipment availability,” Ms Markham said. “The gap becomes more pronounced as students get into early high school where specialist skills and equipment go a long way with student engagement, and teachers need to be across much more complex coding concepts to continue to challenge their students.” Private schools are more likely
to have the resources to employ dedicated technology teachers compared with cash-strapped state schools where teachers are expected to incorporate coding into their already busy classroom schedules. She said while there were some great government-led initiatives aimed to equip teachers with activities to try in the classroom, such as The Digital Technologies Hub, an online resource for schools, the challenges were huge. “The training of thousands of Australian teachers in a new subject area is an enormous undertaking, the Federal and State governments have their hands full,” she said. ife with a teenager — ask almost any parent with one and they will tell tales of angst dealing with mood swings, high emotion and anxiety. Parents of older children will look wisely at tired new mums and dads and sagely offer advice to enjoy the early years despite the sleepless nights and stress of a newborn or a toddler’s tantrums, as the challenges grow bigger along with their children. In their book, Surviving Adolescents 2.0, child psychologist Dr Michael CarrGregg and researcher Elly Robinson say political attention has been transfixed by the early childhood years for too long and it’s time to shift more attention on to adolescence, the second most risky growth and developmental period next to infancy. Preschoolers are far easier to focus on than teenagers who can seem “almost universally

But parents have a role to play to ensure their child is in that majority. One of the most powerful things you can do to prepare for the teenage years is to arm
yourself early with information, knowledge and advice about what to expect. This includes understanding the effect that your parenting style, communication strategies and willingness to set boundaries and limits have on your teenager’s wellbeing. And it’s important not to lose track of how to enjoy the teenage years as well: refocus on the positives such as your child’s quirky teenage sense of humour, celebrate their strengths, and recognise and thank them for any small, selfless tasks.
