Help for Severe Aortic Stenosis

Severe aortic stenosis is a narrowed aortic heart valve that doesn’t open and close properly, reducing blood flow to the rest of the body.

Morton Plant Hospital is now enrolling eligible patients in the Medtronic Evolut R low-risk trial, which investigates the safety and effectiveness of a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) system in patients with severe aortic stenosis who are at a low surgical mortality risk. TAVR is a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery used to treat failing aortic heart valves in patients with severe aortic stenosis. Morton Plant Hospital was chosen as the first hospital in Tampa Bay to offer the TAVR procedure for patients with severe aortic stenosis who were at an intermediate or high surgical mortality risk. Our team has completed more than 700 TAVR procedures over the last five years.

I

n 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day to be national Grandparents Day; this year it falls on September 10th. It’s a day for grandchildren to show their love and appreciation to those with whom they hold a special bond.

That bond can last a long time.

Decades after my grandparents passed, I still miss them.

My paternal grandmother was my “fun” grandma. When I was 10, she gave me my first and last corset. It was red and came with a matching petticoat.

She said it would make me stand up straight. I didn’t care about that, I just thought it made me look like Miss Kitty in Gunsmoke. Apparently, so did my mother. It mysteriously disappeared a few days later. Yes, we were very close, especially during those pre-teen years, when the enemy of my mother was my friend.

My only grandfather who was alive when I was born told some of the best stories, giving me precious insight into what it was

like in the early 20th century. Steeped inside his messages were values like the importance of family and a good education.

He taught me how to drive, and when I accidently pushed too hard on the gas pedal and rammed his new blue Ford pickup into the corner of the barn, he taught me about unconditional love.

If you are lucky enough to have grandchildren, make sure to spend as much time as you can with them now.

They will likely remember what you taught them and how much you loved them for the rest of their lives.

Today’s technology makes it easy to keep in touch even if you live far away. Someone suggested recently that one should buy grandchildren their own domain name. Then, through the years, you can keep an online scrapbook t o g e t h e r, d o c u m e n t i n g e v e n t s , milestones and accomplishments. When they are a little older you can share recipes, jokes, and family stories. It will be a lovely legacy.

I’d like to introduce our new president of Lifestyles After 50, Ed Graves. Most recently, he was the Senior Group Publisher for 12 GateHouse Media newspapers in Eastern Arkansas.

Previous to that, he spent 28 years with the Gannett media company including USA Weekend magazine. He’s lived in Pensacola, Melbourne and Palm Coast and says he’s glad to back in Florida.

We also welcome some writers to this edition. Reader Michael Wright has won a couple of our Literary Corner contests and we enjoyed his work so much, we asked him to join our Lifestyles family. Susan Goldfein will be sharing her unfiltered wit and wisdom as she enters a second career as a blogger, author and speaker. Teresa Kindred’s lighthearted humor can be enjoyed in her piece, “Ten Ways to Be a Super Cool Nana.”

ome pet owners can’t imagine taking a vacation without Spot and many are opting for pet-friendly vacation rentals where he is welcome. But sometimes the guilt can creep in when you have to leave him alone in a hotel room while you go out and have a ball.

Luckily, there are places where you can stay and play on some of Florida’s

many pet-friendly beaches. September is a great time to head to the coastline now that families are back into the school routine, the waters are still warm and prices are lower after Labor Day. We’ve put together a list of suggested venues scattered around the state that offer pet-friendly rentals on pet-friendly beaches. Here you can walk

out your door and head straight to the Gulf or the Atlantic Ocean, leaving just your footprints and paw prints in the sand.

Remember to always bring some fresh water and a bowl with you because salt water can upset a canine’s stomach. Make sure you understand beach and rental rules for the utmost in safety and fun.

She’s in the Kitchen with the Greatest of Ease Sarah Chapman’s Black Bean Soup Ingredients: 3 c. black beans 1 ham bone 1/2 lb. salt pork 1/8/ tsp. thyme 2 med. onions, chopped 1 Tbsp. cooking sherry 1 qt. beef stock 1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1 bay leaf 3 qt. water 1 lg. carrot chopped White rice optional Directions: In stockpot, cook ingredients (except sherry and salt) 2 to 3 hours until beans are tender. Remove bay leaf and bones. Season and add sherry. Reduce heat and stir occasionally until beans thicken to soup consistency. Serve in petite cups topped with chopped onion and shredded cheese. Dip warm, buttered French bread into the soup. Make it authentic by putting 1 Tbsp. cooked white rice in bottom of soup cup.

Salt and pepper to taste.

t the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D. C., in front of 600,000 people, a former Sarasota circus aerialistturned-chef wowed onlookers recently with her mouth-watering recipes from the 4th edition of Simply Sarah ~ A Circus Girl’s Cookbook. The circusstyled spiral-bound cookbook with 165 recipes, photos, and anecdotes of traveling, family, and the circus, has sold over 2,000 copies.

Still fit and lean at 71, Sarah Chapman has branded herself as the “cook who feeds the troupe.” In 1999, she prepared food for 24 in a kitchen inside a tractor-trailer at Roberts Bros.

Circus. But she became handy in the kitchen long before that as she cooked for her children and husband, Danny Chapman, whom she married at the tender age of 19; Danny was more than 30 years her senior.

His aerialist career ended in Brussels after he fell 55 feet. He turned to clowning and was instrumental in the formation of Clown College. He met Sarah when she performed as a member of Sarasota’s Sailor Circus.

with tending to her blended family of seven, home-schooling her daughter, and taking correspondence classes as well as cooking between daily shows.

She served her traveling meals on paper plates and in reusable plastic glasses, with loud generators and wild animal noises as accompaniment. Once at home on Phillippi Creek in Sarasota, she delighted in serving elaborate meals on table linens and with centerpieces, candles, and music in the background.

She tells her reading audience that she fed circus people wholesome, nutritious food. And when her readers prepare a meal, she encourages them to make it a class act: “Support it with

props or rigging and garnish it with wardrobe, lights and music. That makes you -- the cook -- the main attraction.”

And she knows all about main attractions. As a featured act with Ringing Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for six years (1969 to 1974), she perched 19 feet above the air while balancing on a trapeze. She took part in other acts as well.

The highlight of her career, she recalls, was performing a simple aerial act on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show in 1970 while the Ringling Circus performed in Madison Square Garden.

Directions: Heat broiler to medium-low (350 F). In a small dish, cream yolks with sugar.

In a small mixing bowl, add salt and cold water to whites and whip until stiff and dry. Fold yolks into whites.

Warm a 6- to 8-inch frying pan on medium-low. Add butter and wait until it bubbles. Add eggs, spreading to edges. Cook 3 minutes. Immediately insert pan under broiler 6 inches from heat, leaving oven door cracked. Cook 3 minutes until raised and blistered. Remove pan and flip eggs over unto serving plate.

While cooking the eggs on the range and in the oven, heat a second frying pan with 1 Tbsp. melted butter. Add sliced fruit and warm. Toss in 1 Tbsp. brown sugar; then drizzle vanilla over fruit until sugar caramelizes. Remove from heat. Pour warmed fruit over eggs.

Voila--airy cotton candy eggs.

In 1979, fibromyalgia stole her show and forced her into retirement. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Humanistic Studies with 20 upper level credits from her circus career.

She keeps fit by eating mindfully, swimming, attending exercise classes, and hanging upside down daily from a trapeze. It reminds her of the circus that used to be so much of a part of her life.

“I still miss the smells, color, and music of a circus -- especially hearing the applause because it told me about the audience,” she said.

Expect a Busy Hurricane Season, Forecasters Say

his year’s hurricane season has the potential to become the most active season since 2010. Numerous early season storms and warmer Atlantic waters have caused forecasters to predict a 60 percent chance of an above-normal season (compared to the May prediction of a 45 percent chance). But, rather than panic, let’s see what we mere mortals can and should do in the face of a potentially volatile Mother Nature. Remember, hurricane season lasts until Nov. 30 and we are entering the peak of the season.

We hear numerous storm terms on the radio and TV this time of year, but we may not fully understand their characteristics. A tropical de-

Have crates for transportation handy and ready. Include a favorite toy and a bed or blanket in an adequately sized carrier. Cats will need a portable litter box. Contact nearby hotels and motels to check on pet policies and restrictions if friends or relatives cannot shelter your animals. If necessary, make arrangements with neighbors to help evacuate pets.

varian Cancer is one of the most deadly of women’s cancers. Each year, approximately 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. More than 14,000 women will die from it. It is estimated by the World Health Organization IARC department that there are over 238,000 new cases diagnosed annually and nearly 152,000 deaths worldwide.

This cancer typically occurs in women in their fifties and sixties with the median age being 63. Many women who are diagnosed with Ovarian cancer have a genetic history that may include carrying the BRCA mutation gene and having a strong family history of ovarian cancer.

Unfortunately many women don’t seek help until the disease has begun to spread, but if detected at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is more than 93 percent. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often subtle and easily confused with other ailments.

Symptoms may include: • Bloating • Pelvic or Abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary urgency or frequency • Nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation or diarrhea • Extreme fatigue • Shortness of breath • Backaches • Weight Gain Talk to your doctor if symptoms last more than 2-3 weeks. Gum Disease May Be Linked to Cancer Risk in Older Women (HealthDay News) -- A new study links gum disease with an increased risk of several types of cancer in postmenopausal women, even in women who never smoked.

Periodontal disease was tied to a 14 percent higher risk of developing any type of cancer, the investigators found. But the greatest risk was for esophageal cancer, which was more than three times more likely in older women who had gum disease than those who didn’t.

In addition, gum disease was associated with a higher risk of lung cancer, gallbladder cancer, melanoma and breast cancer, the findings showed.

“These findings may provide a new target to test an intervention for cancer prevention -- oral hygiene and periodontal disease treatment and prevention,” said lead researcher Jean Wactawski-Wende, dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Breast cancer, lung cancer and gallbladder cancer were linked with higher risk among women who smoked and had gum disease. For those women who never smoked but had gum disease, other cancers, such as melanoma, were associated with higher risk, the researchers said.

Although gum disease has been associated with heart disease, the exact reason it may be tied to an increased risk of cancer isn’t known, Wactawski-Wende said.

She speculated that gum disease could be a marker for overall health.

“There is real potential for local and systemic inflammation resulting from the bacteria in the oral cavity reaching other sites through ingestion or inhalation, as well as bacteria entering the bloodstream through oral tissues,” Wactawski-Wende said.

The Letter was declared the demo’s only potential winner. The first order of business: create a new name for the group. Carson recalled how an old-time breakfast cereal ad ploy provided the inspiration. “One of the guys joked, ‘Well, let’s have a contest and everybody can send in fifty cents and a box top.’” (Hey, this was the quirky 1960s, after all!)

In the studio, production engineer Dan Penn coached the Box Tops’ lead singer, a long-haired, 16-year-old white kid named Alex Chilton, to “get a little gruff” and emulate a gritty black artist. Chilton complied, although it took him 30 tries to achieve the “feel” that Penn sought.

During an afternoon break, Penn came across a special-effects record in the studio library. Included on the disc was the sound of a jet airplane in takeoff. He loved the gimmick and added it to the end of the song’s master tape.

Songwriter Carson detested the airplane sound and demanded that it be removed. At this, Penn flew into a rage. According to the anthology, Rock and Roll is Here to Stay, Penn spied a razor blade used for editing tape. “Give me that razor blade right there, and I’ll cut this damn tape up!” he thundered at Carson. “The airplane stays on it, or we don’t have a record!”

The sound remained.

Despite Carson’s objections, The Letter, released on the Mala Records label, became an overnight success. It streaked to the top of the Billboard charts, where it remained for four weeks, sold 4 million singles and even earned two Grammy nominations.

’mon, admit it! You’ve said it.

We’ve all said it: “If I had it to do all over again, I’d _______(fill in the blank).”

Think about it. What would you change if you had another chance?

Okay, I’ll start first.

If I had it to do all over again, I’d either take dancing l e s sons in my

teens, or get some of the ‘cool cats’ to show me how. Then I would have been ‘cool’ too, and, I could have saved some of the girls from having to dance together because we guys were all standing around on the perimeter talking about cars and music.

If I had it to do all over again, I’d take history classes more seriously. I’d conquer the boredom, memorize dates, learn how it repeats itself and how we never learn from it and probably never will.

If I had it to do all over again, I’d be more conscious of “Dorothy R.” and other beautiful, cheerleader-caliber girls who were sweet on me -- only I was too naïve to realize it. Big dummy!

If I had it to do all over again, I

would have forced myself to understand trigonometry and get a passing grade.

“That’s okay,” I rationalized back then.

“When am I ever going to have any use for trig?” In 1964, I became part of a survey crew as a “rodman.”

If I wanted to advance to “instrument man,” I’d have to become adept at using a slide rule a n d know trig-

onometry.

I remained a “rodman” until I left that job.

If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t be the class clown, making cat noises during Spanish class. As fans chat, argue and discuss the early ranking of teams, two major college football polls have listed their favorites as well. The two polls agree on which team should be at the top of the heap and each seemingly has strong feelings about the Southeastern Conference.

Both the Amway Coaches Poll and Sporting News poll, have six SEC teams in their preseason top 25 for the

2017 season; both list Alabama in the top spot. But after number one, each poll features a different lineup for the first five positions.

Amway likes Ohio State, Florida State, Southern Cal and Clemson after Alabama. Sporting News sees it somewhat the same way but shuffling the order with Southern Cal, Ohio State, Florida State, and Clemson rounding out its top five.

Six SEC teams are listed in both top 25 polls including Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Florida, and Tennessee.

Having a Will is always best

reader asks: I visited an attorney to have my Will prepared to make sure that when I die my four kids will get everything equally. As my husband has passed away, I asked the attorney what would happen if I died without making a Will. The attorney told me that under Florida law my kids would share everything equally even without a Will. I then said to him “Well I guess I don’t need a Will” and I left.

Did I do the right thing?

Response: No. Although it is true that under Florida‘s “intestate” statute your four children would inherit your estate equally even without a Will, you are giving up some important rights by relying on the State of Florida to make your estate plan for you.

For instance, without a Will you are unable to choose who will be legally responsible

for distributing your estate and paying your bills. This could lead to arguing among your children as to who should be making critical decisions. And without a Will, whoever actually ends up in charge may have to post a surety Bond as you did not make a Will waiving the Bond. In all likelihood, such a Bond would cost more than a simple Will would have cost you.

Another important reason to have an up to date Will in place is to control what happens to the equal share of a child who might predecease you. Under the intestate statute a predeceased child’s share goes to his or her children instead of his or her siblings.

Of course, this might be fine with you but consider the problems which will occur if your

grandchildren who are inheriting are still minors. Without a Will, you cannot select who will control the grandchildren’s money until each attains adulthood. In all likelihood the Court would appoint the minor grandchild’s surviving parent to control their child’s money. And this would be the case even if the grandchild’s surviving parent was divorced from your predeceased child or was never ever even married to your predeceased child.

The foregoing are just a few of the rights you are giving up by choosing not to have a Will. The potential problems which could occur by not having a Will greatly outweigh the small amount of money and time you might save by forgoing having a Will prepared.

ecently a client relayed a story of her visit to her local Social Security Administration office. She is divorced, had been married more than 10 years, and never remarried. Her husband had just reached full retirement age, and she believed she was entitled to half of her ex-spouse’s benefit (which was higher than hers).

After applying for benefits, the local SSA representative told her that she was not eligible to collect benefits on her ex-husband’s earnings record until he claimed his own benefit.

While he had just reached full retirement age, he had not yet applied for his own benefit. Even the supervisor in the local SSA office agreed—incorrectly—that the client had to wait on her ex-husband to file.

While it took an attorney and a very specialized Social Security advisor for this story to eventually have a happy ending, it got me wondering just how often incorrect information was given to applicants. Last fall, in fact, the Government Accountability Office did a study on just this topic.

It turns out that in 8 of 26 interviews where the claimant could have received a higher benefit by waiting until a later age, the local SSA representative did not discuss the potential advantages and disadvantages of delaying claiming.

Additionally, 11 of the 18 claimants where the retirement earnings test could potentially apply were not given complete information about how the test worked.

These issues were not limited to in-person filing either. The GAO found that online applicants were not given complete information about how their benefits are influenced by their highest 35 years of earnings, among other things.

Another relatively common problem that applicants discover online is that the SSA has errors in their income history. While this is usually because an employer has incorrectly reported earnings, it nonetheless needs to be corrected, since it is the basis by which benefits are calculated.

The bottom line is this—BE CAREFUL! I have come across too many horror stories about applicants applying for benefits after receiving bad information, even from those they believe are the experts.

These days, most financial planners have software that can determine the optimal claiming strategy for both you and your spouse. Going through these scenarios with a trained professional will show the difference between being given information and being given advice. It can also prevent a mistake that can be difficult or impossible to rectify.

Mast cell tumors in dogs

very owner should be knowledgeable about mast cell tumors (MCTs) because they are the most common type of skin cancer in dogs. Mast cells are a normal part of the body’s immune system and are commonly found throughout the layers of skin. Genetics plays a major role in the formation of a MCT. Any age or breed can be affected, but higher risk breeds include boxers, boston terriers, bulldogs, pugs and labrador and golden retrievers.

Dogs eight years and older are also more likely to develop them. Mast cell tumors vary in appearance. They can resemble a small wart like lesion, appear as a circular ulcerated lump on the skin, or even grow underneath the skin in an area called the subcutaneous layer.

If you notice any lump on your dog bring it to your veterinarian’s attention immediately. A simple test called a fine needle aspiration can be easily performed to determine if your pet has a MCT. Unfortunately, the fine needle aspiration cannot determine the grade of the MCT. Therefore, surgery is required to remove the tumor as well as healthy tissue around the tumor to send out for analysis. Mast cell tumors are graded from 1 (low) to 3 (high) depending on how aggressive the cancer is. Grade 1 tumors act benignly and typically they only require surgical removal of the lump. Grade 3 tumors can be highly malignant and spread to other areas in the body including the lymph nodes, spleen, and liver. High grade

MCTs commonly require additional treatment after surgery and carry a poorer prognosis. If the tumor cells extend to the edge of the sample then additional surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy are required.

id you know that the Sunday after Labor Day is National Grandparents Day? I reluctantly admit to being a grandparent for 25 years and only recently learning of this occasion.

When our first grandbaby was three, I delighted in hearing her call me “Grandma.” Now that she’s 25, I sweetly request that, as honored as I am to be her nana, she refrain from addressing me as such in public places.

It took another nine years, but we were eventually blessed with four more grandkids, now ages 10 through 16. I don’t yet have a problem with any of them yelling “Grandma” in a crowded movie theater, but as soon as the 16-year-old grows one more inch, and starts using eye liner, I shall look around quizzically and pretend not to notice that she’s referring to me.

Love them all as I do, I have to admit that my grand parenting skills may fall a little short. I don’t bake cookies, or bake anything for that matter. I attend only one out of three Little League games and have avoided extensive babysitting gigs by moving to Florida. Besides, I spend a considerable amount of time writing these essays instead of imparting wisdom to the next generation.

But, there is something that I have passed on to my young crew, at least to the four out of five who

are female. They have inherited my shopping gene. Over the years, for birthdays and back-to-school, we’ve spent quality time browsing through racks and I have delighted in watching my young granddaughters define their own sense of style and individuality.

I was known as the “Shopping Grandma,” the one who’d drive them to their favorite retail establishment and patiently look on as they assessed the inventory, tried on their selections, and asked me for an opinion. We’d return home and they’d proudly model for their parents, who occasionally frowned because a skirt was too short. But, hey, Grandma was entitled to be the spoiler.

It’s September again and backto-school time. Sadly, there are no more shopping sprees. They’re older now and prefer shopping with their friends. So it’s cash or gift cards, while Grandma stays home and considers learning how to bake cookies.

I must admit I miss our ritual.

But now that I’ve discovered Grandparents Day, perhaps they’d like to take me shopping?

I even have a sweatshirt that says, “My grandchildren call me Nana because I’m too cool to be Grandma.” To me, NanaHood is the second half of the motherhood journey. Motherhood was fun but this NanaHood thing is way better. It’s all the joy of parenthood without the tractor trailer load of responsibility.

Anyway, it occurred to me that there might be some grandmothers out there who need to up their grandma game so here are some suggestions.

Tattoo your grandchild’s name on your arm. If you have several grandchildren use both arms.

If you aren’t crazy about tattoos, use an ink pen for the tats and wash your arms off after your grandchildren visit.

Feed your grandchildren as much candy and as many soft drinks as they want, but make sure you only do this when they are not spending the night with you. Practice acting innocent so you will be believable when the parents come to pick up the children and they are bouncing off the walls.

Buy a motorcycle. What could be cooler than a grandmother who rides a Harley? If you can’t actually ride a motorcycle that’s okay.

Have your picture made on one and send them a framed copy so they can brag to their friends about their Harley-riding nana.

Take them shopping for school clothes and let them pick out what they think is cool, not what you think is appropriate. They will love you for it even if they don’t get to wear it when mom sees it.

Take them to an animal shelter and buy them a pet to take home to mom and dad.

Send at least one bag of pet food home with them to keep them from killing you immediately.

Get concert tickets for their favorite rock group and tell them they can take a friend.

Then buy yourself a good set of ear plugs and go with them.

For summertime entertainment, have a food fight out on the deck. When you are done use the water hose to spray everyone off. Remind grandchildren not to try this at home. Parents are not nearly as cool as nana.

Use Photoshop to make a picture of yourself with your grandchild’s favorite sports star.

They’ll think it’s really cool that nana once shot hoops with LeBron James.

And the number one way to prove you are a cool nana...

Take everyone to Disney World for a week and put it all on your charge card. The grandchildren will be out of college by the time you pay it off, but hey, those memories last a life time (and so do the bills).

These 10 suggestions for coolness are, of course, in jest. Being cool is like beauty, it’s in the eyes of the beholder. My grandmother did none of the 10 things I mentioned and I thought she was cool because I loved her to the moon and back and she loved me even more.

And when it comes right down to it, that’s a whole lot more important than being cool.
