MAY WAYS H ello May and all those special days you bring: Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Cinco de Mayo and even National Dance Like a Chicken Day or National Pack Rat Day. You also host a month of appreciation for many of our readers, older Americans.

Led by the Administration on Aging, part of the Administration for Community Living, Older Americans Month was established in 1963, when only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday.

About a third of these persons were impoverished with few programs to meet their needs.

Concern for their welfare grew and in April 1963, President John F. Kennedy, along with members of the National Council of Senior Citizens, designated May as Senior Citizens Month, which later became known as Older Americans Month.

Today the number of Americans ages 65 and older is 46 million and expected to increase to over 98 million by 2060, according to the Population Reference Bureau’s report, “Aging in the United States.”

Wow. In this issue, we focus on the Baby Boomer generation – its members turning between 55 and 73 years old this year. As they age, their sheer numbers will create a tsunami of challenges for our healthcare system in the decades to come. But we’re not just picking on them. Humorist Susan Goldfein pokes fun at her generation, the Silent one, and longs for a new moniker – one that can make her proud.

We wish all Moms a Happy Mother’s Day. Be sure to check out Kathy Megyeri’s piece on a few Florida mothers who gave birth to some important ideas and institutions that helped shape our state. HERE COMES THE SILVER TSUNAMI As baby boomers ride the swell into the future, they will redefine aging in America

Remember, the baby boomers made health and fitness fads mainstream.

(Didn’t they invent jogging?) They got physical with aerobics, racquetball, surfing, disco dancing and yoga.

While some fell off the fitness wagon in middle age, as a whole, they still tend to be more proactive about their health through exercise and proper nutrition than previous generations. This will undoubtedly pay dividends in future outcomes as this population ages.

he year 2030 marks a crucial demographic turning point in U.S. history according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s report: National Population Projections.

By 2030, all baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) will be over age 65. One in every five residents will be retirement age.

“The aging of baby boomers means that within just a couple decades, older people are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history,” said Jonathan Vespa, U.S. Census Bureau demographer. “By 2035, there will be 78 million people 65 years and older compared to 76.7 million under the age of 18.”

The 2030s are predicted to be a transformative decade for the U.S. population. If trends continue, the population will expand at a slower pace, age significantly and become more racially and ethnically diverse. Net international migration is projected to become the primary driver of population growth in the United States (as opposed to births) – another demographic first for the United States.

The graying of America will present many challenges for government agen-

cies, caregivers, taxpayers, hospitals and other healthcare organizations.

Who will take care of this population whose sheer numbers could overwhelm the healthcare system as chronic conditions (such as dementia and cancer) accumulate with age? What will the financial costs be?

Before we hit the panic button, let’s take a look at these babies born after World War II. Boomers are wealthy – well, some of them As a whole, baby boomers possess more than two-thirds of this country’s disposable income. They control $46 trillion in wealth and are projected to inherit $15 trillion in the next two decades, according to Forbes magazine.

Yet, about 45% of the boom generation report having no retirement savings at all.

They will likely live longer – and more independently – than previous generations Advances in medicine will have the potential to extend longevity and improve the ability of these older Ameri-

Baby boomers are benefitting from emerging technologies With access to information on the internet at their fingertips, baby boomers are an informed and confident bunch, frequently googling medical issues to learn what they can about potential diseases and treatments.

Other developing technologies will be steadily on their side.

While we aren’t yet seeing Jetson-like flying cars, today’s older seniors are already benefitting from the use of wearable gadgets, voice recognition systems, delivery services, transportation services, personal alarms and sensors that track vital signs.

Self-driving cars may soon be a part of the everyday roadscape and robots (in the form of humanoids or pets) are beginning to help look after grandma and keep her in her own home by assisting with communication, medication management and monitoring. And virtual appointments will allow those with mobility or transportation issues to consult with their medical practitioners as needed.

The future holds unheralded medical miracles Boomers are coming of old age at a good time. Medical treatments and drug therapies should look much different by 2030, 2040 and 2050.

Already, advances in minimally-inva-

sive and robotic techniques have made surgeries safer with shorter and less painful recovery time.

Stem cell therapies are showing promise in curing diseases and repairing tissues.

We now can identify genes that cause disease which is leading to better treatment outcomes. Cancer drugs have turned some kinds of once-fatal diseases into chronic illnesses.

And, we are doing a better job of managing conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes more effectively.

Alzheimer’s disease, which takes a serious toll on caregivers and creates a substantial financial burden on the healthcare system, has been tougher to tackle. A new study projects that the disease will be responsible for 25 percent of all Medicare spending by 2040.

However, our better understanding of the brain, improved imaging and detection techniques, and emerging drug and cognitive therapies could make prevention and treatment a reality someday.

Indeed, the so-called “Me Generation,” the one that said they’d never grow old, will do just that, but in a different way. And our guess is, they won’t go gently into that good night.

‘Poms’ May Film

T

he Sun Springs Retirement Community looks to be brochureperfect and a place with enough regimented activities (tennis, water aerobics, golf, lawn bowling) to keep all the residents busy and contented.

That’s about to change. When new retiree Martha (Diane Keaton) moves in, a well-meaning greeter asks, “What brings you to Sun Springs?”

Martha smiles and answers, “Oh, I’m just here to die.”

Before long she is befriended by Sheryl (Jackie Weaver), who discovers that Martha was a high-school

cheerleader who quit the team when her mother fell ill. “Maybe you should give it another shot,” Sheryl encourages after she senses Martha’s wistfulness about her missed opportunity from half a century past.

They approach the Sun Springs powers-that-be and propose a cheerleading club. When asked who they will be cheering for, Martha blithely responds, “Ourselves!”

And what a team it becomes. Included among the enthusiastic ladies recruited are Olive (Pam Grier) and Alice (Rhea Perlman), as well as a host of other women of diverse backgrounds with long-suppressed desires to shake some booties as well as pom poms.

As it turns out, Martha is indeed dying. Though she has assured others at Sun Springs that she’s “fit as a fiddle,” she finally admits to Sheryl that she is terminal. For the second time in her life, Martha decides to call it quits. Again, it’s Sheryl to the rescue: “You were dying yesterday, and you’re gonna be dying

next week. his quote, by Benjamin Franklin, is as true today as it was in the 1700’s. He originally was referring to fire safety, specifically carrying hot coals from room to room in a warming pan, carefully shut so as not to drop embers and cause a fire to smolder and burn the house down during the night.

Likewise, diseases can hide undetected in our beloved pets with no outward symptoms until more advanced changes make treatment more complex. Diseases such a kidney impairment, diabetes, Cushing’s, heart, liver, and certain cancers can often be detected much earlier with simple blood screening.

Blood work can be an invaluable tool for early diagnosis, monitoring, and intervention to keep dogs and cats healthy. It is desirable to use this information at all life stages, from juvenile, to middle aged and geriatric, as well as prior to beginning many types of medications, contemplating surgery or a dental prophylaxis.

A basic blood screening for a puppy or kitten can be used to rule out certain congenital abnormalities and serve as a baseline to use as a comparison in the future. It typically gives a minimum database including a complete blood count ( red cells, white cells, and platelets ) and a chemistry panel to evaluate organ

any publications (including Lifestyles After 50) have a “personal ads” section for those in search of romance. Sometimes this section is as entertaining as the rest of the magazine or newspaper and can be an indicator of how society, in general, has progressed or deteriorated over the years, depending on one’s point of view.

In one ad found in a retirement community newspaper, the seeker used automotive terms to describe himself: “Male, 1932 model, high mileage, good condition, some hair, many new parts including hip, knee, cornea, valves. Isn’t in running condition, but walks well.”

I n a n o t h e r, a grandmother described herself as “active, with original teeth seeking a dedicated flosser to share rare steaks, corn on the cob and caramel candy.”

In this vein, I’ve given some thought to those in my own community and come up with some “personal ads” I feel could be written by some of the residents. Their names shall remain anonymous to protect the innocent – like me.

ometimes I write about the most obvious things when they are the most important things.

For example, a very nice lady visited me recently intent on having a Living Trust prepared. Like most trust clients, her goal was to avoid probate. The lady had developed a well thought out plan to divide her estate among about a half-dozen charities, including a generous gift to her synagogue.

As the lady was a widow and estranged from her son; and with no close relatives, she had to rely upon a friend from her retirement community to serve as her successor trustee — her modest estate would not qualify for a corporate trustee, like her bank — but she is not completely convinced her friend can be trusted.

I cautioned the lady about how easy it would be for an unscrupulous successor trustee to steal from her trust once she died. I asked: who would ever know if her friend succumbed to temptation and simply kept the trust assets for herself?

Although she did not want to hear this, I suggested to the lady that a better approach to insure that her charities received everything she intended was to allow her estate to pass through probate. Yes there would be the additional expense of a probate administration, but her personal representative would be required to prove to the Probate Court through documentation that all of the charities listed in her Will received what she intended.

And isn’t this the most important thing?

Great News Octogenarian’s Poetry Accepted into Library of Congress

Plant City poet Angelina Steiner, 82, and her son, Eddie Steiner, who designed the covers for her two poetry books that were accepted into the Library of Congress

ngelina Pennisi Steiner, an 82-yearold resident of Plant City, has written two books of poetry. Her first book, Chasing Dreams, was published in 2014 and is archived in the Library of Congress.

Recently, she learned her second book, Beautiful Words Coming My Way, has also been accepted into the Library of Congress.

The books are the accumulation of more than 60 years of poems written by Steiner and focus on a wide range of topics, from family life to children’s poems and fantasy.

Steiner wrote them for personal use and never intended to publish her work. Her daughter, Chris Steiner, found the poems in a dresser and pursued publication. The books covers are illustrated by her son, Eddie Steiner.

The octogenarian shares her poems weekly at the St. Clemente Senior Center in Plant City.

This Mothers’ Day we pay tribute to some of the women whose efforts and achievements helped improve and enrich the lives of Floridians and other Americans. Not all bore children, but their societal contributions have left a positive impact on our environment, our educational and legal systems, in aviation, and on our state and country.

An American journalist, author, women’s suffrage advocate and conservationist, Douglas was known for her steadfast protection of the Everglades when some considered it a worthless swamp that should be drained and developed. In 1947, she penned The Everglades: River of Grass which forever changed Americans’ perception of the land with its first sentence, “There are no other Everglades in the world.”

Five years after the book’s publication, the Everglades became a national park.

When she was 79, Douglas founded the Friends of the Everglades to protest the construction of a jetport; she explained her activism by saying, “It’s a women’s business to be interested in the environment. It’s an extended form of housekeeping.” She was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient on her 105th birthday. Unfortunately, a high school named in her honor was the site of the 2018 Valentine’s Day mass shooting in Parkland.

Cochran was a journalist, the owner of a cosmetics company and a pioneer in the field of aviation. Born in Pensacola, she would become one of the foremost racing pilots of her generation, setting records for speed, distance and altitude.

Cochran was the first woman to break the sound barrier, to fly a bomber across the Atlantic, and to make a blind instrument landing. She designed the first oxygen mask and was the first pilot to fly 20,000 feet to test it.

She helped to form the wartime Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and was the first civilian woman to win a Distinguished Service Medal. She was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 1992.

She is arguably the greatest female pilot in aviation history as she held more records than any other pilot, male or female. She likely would have received more recognition if not for the unfortunate passing of Amelia Earhart.

One of Florida’s most powerful and influential First Ladies, Jennings led a variety of civic and philanthropic organizations. She was the daughter of a state senator and wife of our 18th governor, William Sherman Jennings, who presided from 1901 to 1905. Her political knowledge, connections, social skills and smarts were exceptional and helped propel her husband’s career. At the time, women were not considered suitable candidates for political office.

An activist for many causes, Jennings crusaded tirelessly for environmental conservation, child welfare, the state library, prison and educational reform, historic preservation and highway beautification. In 1921 she co-founded the Florida State League of Women Voters.

She was also called the “Mother of Florida Forestry” for helping to promote the legislative act for the creation of the Florida State Board of Forestry.

Bethune was an American educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, humanitarian and civil rights activist. In 1904, she established the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls. It would eventually become a college and later, BethuneCookman University. Considered the nation’s expert on black education, Bethune served as an adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his “black cabinet.” She also founded a boys’ club, a high school, a library, a hospital and a nursing school. She pushed for the integration of the Red Cross and the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.

Generation_______?

I

t occurred to me that my entire generation is invisible. I arrived at this sad conclusion because we’ve been overlooked by those who bestow catchy cohort labels.

Specifically, I’m referring to people born between 1926 and 1946. We number almost 28 million, yet we exist without a cultural tag. I resent this. This is no legacy to leave our children and grandchildren, otherwise known as the Xs, Ys, and possibly the Zs! Born too late to be World War II heroes and too soon for the post-war birth explosion, we’re sandwiched awkwardly between the Greatest Generation and Baby Boomers.

Maybe if we understood the genesis of generation-naming, we could create something clever and catchy for ourselves.

Tom Brokaw bestowed the label “Greatest Generation” on those born between 1901 and 1926. I don’t disagree. They survived the Depression and fought in the deadliest conflict in human history.

And the Boomers? Those born between 1946 and 1964 think they’re so special. Who can blame them with all the attention they’ve gotten from the media and marketers. So what if they earned lots of money, invented rock ‘n’ roll and passed out at Woodstock?

Generation-naming is continuing its forward march, leaving us further behind. Gen X covers the

years 1966 to the early 80s. The X originally meant the fate of this generation was unknown. Gen Y was so-called simply because it followed X. Xers are also known as Millennials because the majority came of age after the turn of the century. But I’m getting a little tired of all the tweeting, selfietaking and Instagramming – talk about the “me” generation.

(What else can you expect from a peer group that wins ribbons just for showing up?)

Have you heard about Gen Z, aka iGen? Born after 2001, they’ve caught the attention of the cultural pulsetakers, while their grandparents and great grandparents slip further into obscurity. Which brings us to today, when I’m sure someone is attempting to figure out a catchy moniker to reflect the zeitgeist of a generation yet to be born.

So back to the nameless masses. We have been referred to as “Depression Babies” or “War Babies,” but those are such downers. Others have called us the “Silent Generation” because we didn’t make waves, worked hard, and stuck by our good oldfashioned values. Borrr-ing.

So dear cohorts, here’s the challenge. Don your thinking caps and come up with a generational name we can be proud of. Send your suggestions to me at the email address below.

Understanding the Risks of Target-Date Retirement Funds

ne of the relatively new products in the investment world is the targetdate mutual fund. In this type of fund, an investor selects a portfolio with a future date that is expected to coincide with a particular event – most commonly retirement. As this date approaches, the company managing the fund automatically adjusts the asset allocation to get more and more conservative in anticipation of the investor needing access to at least a portion of the money.

These funds have become very popular in the last 15 years or so of their existence – so popular in fact, that according to Vanguard, approximately half of retirement investors had their entire account invested in a target-date fund in 2017. This “set it and forget it” strategy sounds like a no-brainer for investors –what could be wrong with it?

Plenty, it turns out.

Let’s start with fees. These funds are considered “funds of funds,” meaning they are simply mutual funds that own other mutual funds. Obviously, these extra layers mean that internal expenses can add up quickly.

Another issue with the target-date fund is consistency. While you may think that target-date funds with the same retirement date would have a similar weighting in stocks and bonds, this is actually not the case. Among the most common target-date fund providers like Fidelity, Vanguard and T. Rowe Price, there is a meaningful difference in asset allocation even for the same designated retirement year.

Perhaps more concerning than this disparity is the fact that with a target-date fund, you are locked into a single fund family so your entire portfolio will be invested only in one fund family’s mutual funds. In more than two decades in this business, I have yet to find one family that excels in all areas of asset allocation.

Possibly the most underappreciated problem with target-date funds is how they treat fixed income. Because traditional views on asset allocation would equate being more conservative with having a higher percentage of the portfolio in bonds, target-date funds are structured as such. The problem is that in an environment where interest rates rise, bond funds will struggle to break even since bond prices move inversely to the direction of interest rates.

National Stroke Awareness Month Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and is the primary cause of long-term disability, reducing mobility in more than half of survivors age 65 and over. The risk of stroke increases with age. Each year, more than 795,000 in the U.S. have a stroke.

Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity and diabetes. Up to 80% of strokes could be prevented through healthy lifestyle changes and control of these health conditions.

Knowing the warning signs and symptoms of stroke, and acting quickly if you or someone you know might be having a stroke, may significantly increase the chances of survival. Symptoms include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion or trouble speaking or seeing; difficulty walking or lack of coordination; and severe headache that often comes on quickly.

If you think someone may be having a stroke, “act F.A.S.T.” and do the following test. It’s critical that emergency treatment begins quickly.

F – Face. Ask the person to smile. Does the face droop?

A – Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one drift downward.

S – Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T – Time. If you see any of these signs call 9-1-1 immediately. Stroke treatments work best only if the stroke is recognized and diagnosed within 3 hours of the first symptoms.

Better Hearing Month

Members of the American Academy of Audiology stress there is an vital connection between brain activity and hearing. They cite a 2017 report by a group of scientists led by Jingkai Wei with the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The scientists reviewed multiple studies which followed a total of over 15,000 subjects.

The study showed that hearing impairment is associated with a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia among older adults.

According to the National Institutes of Health NIDCD, approximately 15 percent of American adults aged 20 to 69 have some trouble with hearing. Only about 16% of those in this age group who would benefit from hearing aids has ever used them.

Furthermore, fewer than 30% of adults aged 70 and older who could benefit from hearing aids have ever used them.

Those experiencing signs of hearing loss such as having to turn up the volume of the TV when other family members complain it’s too loud, continually asking people to repeat themselves, or ringing in the ears, should see an audiologist who will run a series of tests to determine the problem.

Nothing like Mahler in May with The Florida Orchestra

id you know The Florida Orchestra performs more than 130 concerts a season? Many of them for free or little cost. And that’s how the season wraps up in May, with a mix of stellar concerts in the concert hall and in the community.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (May 3 & 4): Mahler’s spellbinding Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” is framed by Steve Reich’s unusual Music for Pieces of Wood and Andrew Norman’s ridiculously virtuosic percussion concerto Switch, featuring Colin Currie. Switch was written especially for Currie, who has said he feels like “being trapped inside a pinball machine’’ when performing it on instruments stretched across the stage. Michael Francis conducts. Tickets start at $18; free Colin Currie tickets for kids and teens in advance.

Free Pops in the Park (May 10 & 12): This spring TFO performs concerts in two parks, Coachman Park in Clearwater (May 10) and Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in Tampa (May 12) – perfect for Mother’s Day. TFO Assistant Conductor Daniel Black directs film scores, Broadway hits and symphonic favorites, with a grand finale of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and a patriotic salute. All free. Bring a blanket, picnic, and plenty of canned goods for Tampa Bay Harvest.

Inside Shostakovich (May 23): Michael Francis blends humor, smart analysis, and live orchestra demos to take you on a journey through Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, ending with a performance of the entire symphony. You’ll never listen to music the same way again. Admission is pay what you can at the door at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg.

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (May 24-26): TFO’s 51st season wraps up with Tchaikovsky’s dashing yet graceful Violin Concerto, a highly demanding piece that shows the virtuosic skill of TFO Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer. The concert ends on Shostakovich’s heroic masterpiece, Symphony No. 5.

23At the time, Decoration Day honored only fallen Union soldiers, with flowers, flags and wreaths placed on their tombstones. In the South, women in Columbus, Miss. laid flowers on the graves of both the Union and Confederate soldiers in the city’s Friendship Cemetery, proclaiming their own first Decoration Day 34 35 36 in33 1866.

Later, Federal Memorial Day, established in 1888, allowed Civil War veterans 41 from both sides who worked for the U. S. government to honor their deceased 45 46 comrades without being docked a day’s pay. After World War I, the day was 50 expanded to honor the war dead from all American wars.

Although it wasn’t official until 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday 57 Act 58 59 Holiday in 1968, thus setting Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and ensuring a three-day weekend for federal employees.

Today people observe Memorial Day in many different ways with some visiting cemeteries and memorials and others enjoying barbecues, picnics and pool parties. Some may reflect quietly on the gravitas of the day or perhaps recall the words of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose classic 1882 poem “Decoration Day” honored the military fallen and ended with these poignant words: 10
