Finding Your Independence in July

Not only does July mean that summer is well underway for Floridians, but it’s also the month of celebrating independence. Typically, we recognize the importance of our autonomy on the Fourth of July with fireworks, hot dogs and picnic salads.

What better way to enjoy summer?

With these resources at your fingertips, it’s hard to say “no” to putting your mind to the test.

However, many of us forget to celebrate our own personal independence as we move freely through life. Independence is a matter and a right that should be exalted and maintained throughout a person’s life. So, what can seniors do to maintain their independence as they age?

Others way you can ensure your independence in the long-term is by being smart with your money, but you didn’t need me to tell you that. An issue that many retirees run into is not being able to live in the same sort of fast-and-loose way they had before when it comes to finances. With a fixed income such as social security, it’s imperative that you not only spend money wisely, but save for the future. Independence is more than just having personal freedomsit's the ability to exist without the assistance of others. Whether this be mental, physical or financial, remaining autonomous throughout life is crucial to our overall health.

The best way to keep your life as you know it is by treating your brain as a muscle: exercise it!

Some great ways to work on your independence and ensure that you’ll have personal freedom in old age is to exercise your brain. Depending on if you prefer a physical page to virtual, there are an array of solitary games you can play in order to keep your brain active and healthy for years to come. Some great examples of activities to keep your entertained for hours are sudoku, crosswords, word finds, chess and even jigsaw puzzles. Many

As we progress into summer months in Florida amidst the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, seniors especially want to remain as healthy as possible at home. Have extra batteries, water, canned food, and a manual can opener on hand in case there’s a power outage during storm events.

Keeping the mind active at this time is especially important, too. On the computer or smart phone, there are many brain games available. A few top favorites include Words with Friends, Crossword Puzzles, Sudoku numbers games, action games like Angry Birds’ Best Arcade and Sim City, where you can build your own extraordinary city.

Once library programs are fully functioning again, even more opportunities will abound to keep the mind engaged such as trivia nights, cuisine demonstrations, dance instructions, music performances, films and book presentations which highlight the relevance of historical events on our present issues.

In addition, libraries offer computer classes and consultation on smart phone use.

To better prepare us with the safest environment in which to live, we need to make a consistent resolution to declutter. The floor is not even a temporary storage option for books and magazines. One wrong move could land you on the floor, having slipped on reading material, hopefully without a broken bone.

Professional organizer Barbara Reich recommends sorting clutter into three piles: Keep, Toss and Donate. “Tackle what makes you most bonkers first. After that your anxiety level will drop exponentially and it’s amazing how motivated you are to keep going,” she says.

Categories of paper to definitely recycle are old bank statements, catalogs and very old manuals. Most of this information can be easily accessed online, so ditch them! Also, donate the items that you thought “may come in handy someday”.

Books can also be gifted to a grateful family member or donated to your local library branch for their next fundraiser. Allow others to learn from the books you have garnered so much knowledge from. The authors would want you to share their insights with your friends and relatives.

But, in case your best efforts to declutter fail and you do trip and lose your balance at home, there are certain ways to fall to lessen the blow: Stay bent: fall with bent elbows and knees to lessen the impact and don’t become rigid. Protect your head by turning it to the side or tuck your chin to your chest. If possible land on your butt or thighs, not bone; land on muscle! Roll into it, and spread the impact.

If you belong to AARP, it’s wise to call their 24/7 registered nurse helpline at 888- 543-5630 if you feel as though you are injured. They will keep a record of your call and their advice will possibly avoid an ambulance call and visit to the hospital.

FORMER SPOUSE MIGHT STILL INHERIT DESPITE DIVORCE

Answer: It depends on when your Will was executed.

If your Will was executed after your marriage, your former wife was automatically cut out of your Will the moment the Final Order of Dissolution of Marriage was entered.

However, if your Will was executed prior to your marriage, perhaps in anticipation of your getting married and immediately leaving for your honeymoon, then, in that case, should you now die your former spouse will be treated no differently than any other beneficiary named in your Will and she will inherit your entire estate despite the divorce.

This is just another example why estate planning documents, including Wills, should be reviewed whenever major lifetime events, such as death, divorce or a birth, occur.

2. Calls of Nature – it’s tempting, but don’t take your device with you to the bathroom due to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out, for those of you who don’t speak iGen.) Make sure you turn off the camera and the sound. No one wants to hear you flush!

3. Consider your Surroundings – while Zoom does provide some interesting backdrops, no one will believe that you’re actually at the Grand Canyon or that you own the Picasso behind you. But you can select a home space that reflects who you are. And definitely remove all plants that haven’t been watered in three months.

4. Flaunt your Intellect – stack your shelves with the complete works of Shakespeare, the lives of German philosophers and all three books in the Hilary Mantel Cromwell series. Then sit in front of your bookcase and smugly take your call.

5. Leave Vanity Outside the Chat Room – Although you see yourself on camera, avoid the temptation to adjust your hair, seek your best angle or move from room to room in search of optimal lighting. There’s nothing more distracting than a swishing pony tail, or a face that appears to be following a tennis match.

6. Abide by Time Limits – while it’s adorable to how off your precious pets and cute babies, 30 seconds is long enough. Make that 20.

Get you rmotor runnin’, head out on the highway Lookin’ for adventure and whatever comes our way - Steppenwolf “Easy Rider” was the ultimate epochal, and ultimately doomed, buddy picture, a movie replete with drugs, rock ‘n’ roll, sex and violence as elements of the seductive allure of freedom that the open road can offer.

brutally murdered after all three unintentionally stir up trouble at a smalltown Louisiana café. Following a nightmarish LSD trip during Mardi Gras, Captain America and Billy continue their travels.

As Captain America (a well-groomed, leather-clad Peter Fonda) and Billy (a slovenly, fringe-jacketed Dennis Hopper), the pair journey across America in an attempt to abandon mainstream life for one sans responsibility.

Flush with cash from a Los Angeles cocaine deal (which features a cameo appearance by record producer Phil Spector, who hands over the money), the two modern-day cowboys roar east on flashy motorcycles, bound for Mardi Gras and, eventually, a cushy retirement in Florida.

Writer Terry Southern worked on the script with Hopper and Fonda and later told “Creative Screenwriting” that the original idea had been to portray the pair sailing off into the sunset out of Key West at the movie’s end. Southern said, “It wasn’t until the end that it took on a genuinely artistic dimension—when it suddenly evolved into an indictment of the American redneck, and his hatred and intolerance for anything remotely different from himself.” The shocking demise of the two bikers comes at the hands of a shotgun-wielding assailant.

Fonda and Hopper, the film’s producer/director team, found Columbia Pictures’ bean counters reluctant to dole out adequate funds for the endeavor. So tight became the allotted budget that the idea of an original music score was scrapped in lieu of using rock singles on the soundtrack.

Throughout the odyssey, a reflective Captain America seems to appreciate and respect everything and everyone he encounters, whereas Billy stumbles about in a pot-induced fog while rhapsodizing about the hedonistic bacchanal that awaits in New Orleans. On the way, they meet an alcoholic ACLU lawyer named George Hansen (Jack Nicholson, at the time an unknown). George decides to head east with the two but is Lifestyles After 50 • July 2020 • page 10

After Peter Fonda previewed the movie for his father, the legendary Henry (who had worked in mainstream motion pictures for 35 years) admitted to his son, “I’m worried about it because the film is inaccessible… I just don’t think many people will get it.”

Not so. Aimed at the high school and college-age audience, “Easy Rider” offered an unflinching look at the dying days of the 1960s counterculture.

Shot on a shoestring budget of $900,000, “Easy Rider” raked in $60 million dollars at the box office and garnered a Best First Work award at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival.

Book Of Ages, The Life & Opinions Of Jane Franklin

I celebrated Independence Day by reading an uplifting, historical book about someone unfamiliar to me. Jane Franklin Mecom, the youngest sister of Benjamin Franklin, was considered one of his closest confidants for they corresponded throughout most of their lives. Most of their correspondence has been lost, but some of their letters survived.

Her life was one of confinement as she never learned to ride a horse and she only left the city with her mother. After work, she ran errands, visited her sisters and helped care for their children as well, all the while trying to keep her own family out of the poor house; still, she found time to write a small diary she called “Book of Ages.”

Born in 1712 and married at 15 to a mentally unstable, illiterate saddle maker turned good-for-nothing, Edward Mecom, Jane had 12 children of which only one outlived her. She never attended school but because of her brother’s tutoring, she learned to read and write. Benjamin ran away to New York to become a printer becauseI celebrated Independence Day by reading an uplifting, historical book about someone unfamiliar to me. So, why is this book so special? First, it’s meticulously researched by historian Jill Lepore and was nominated for a National Book Award in nonfiction. Lepore is considered the only historian of Jane Franklin and used documents, objects and portraits to compile this piece of literature.

Secondly, the book gives us a look at the life of 18th century Colonial American women revealing their conversations and relationships. Jane Franklin Mecome’s view of history from the vantage point of a powerless woman in Boston is really a biography of all history’s anonymous, overlooked women. Signs That I’m Starting to Get Old Shortly before this past Memorial Day I came to the painful realization and had to accept the fact, that I’m getting old! It wasn’t because of any particular pains, ailments, maladies or infirmities. It wasn’t due to any change in the color of my hair nor due to additional hair growth in my ears or nostrils. And I did NOT give in and begin playing shuffleboard at the clubhouse. The reason I know I’m aging is because... (drum roll) …we just bought a PRACTICAL car. Yup! It’s true!

This is not to say that there will be no more sporty convertibles in our future. However, (Mike inserts tissues into his cheeks) “we were made an offer we couldn’t refuse”. Especially since “our Toyota Avalon now sleeps wit da fishes.”

It’s an SUV, a silver Ford Expedition XLT. I actually have to stand atop a three-rung stepladder in order to clean the love bugs from off of the windshield. It’s huge! Sitting up high as I steer it along the highway is like piloting the U.S.S. Indianapolis through the Philippine Sea, only without the sharks.

It has enough room to hold all my wife’s jewelry-making supplies, a tent and two tables for transport to the local farmers markets, plus room for additional passengers besides just me and an ice chest. I’m thinking we could add an inflatable mattress and use it like a camper when we go on vacations, avoiding the cost of a motel stay unless, of course, we come across a really good discount coupon.

It has of three wide cinemascope-like mirrors, so there are no blind spots, a major concern since I provide one of my own.

The gas mileage isn’t as bad as I expected, roughly 21 miles per gallon.

With the seats folded down, it will seat eight passengers comfortably or 12 passengers cramped and miserable.

I have made one major modification to the vehicle. I had a steel cowcatcher mounted on the front to eliminate the frustration of Florida drivers who meander slowly in the fast lane. It was either that or a bazooka…

I DID IT! I challenged myself to write this entire peace without mentioning COVID-19, the coronavirus, or quarantine. Yay, Me! Oops..

The Florida Orchestra posts 100 videos from home

When the pandemic took hold in mid-march, the florida orchestra vowed to keep the music going, even without concerts.

Wow, did we ever.

Tfo has posted more than 100 videos on youtube and our tfo at home series on our website – more than any other orchestra, we believe – thanks to our creative musicians, music director michael francis, associate conductor daniel black and tireless staff.

Many of these videos were created by our teaching artists to help kids practice and learn virtually at home.

The response has been truly moving, including this for our virtual orchestra performance of tchaikovsky’s symphony no. 4 (Finale): “The performance brought tears to my eyes, and it gives me hope that all of our orchestras will be playing together again and bringing back the joy of live music to audiences all over the world.

Sweet Memphis Style Ribs BY: CHEF MELISSA COOKSTON

During the summer, ribs are the kings of the smokers. I wanted to share a simple method for cooking absolutely great Memphis style ribs in your backyard. These are not competition-style ribs, but they are how I cook ribs when I am cooking at the house for myself and my family.

Ingredients: • Ribs

• 2 TBS Brown sugar per slab of ribs

• 2 TBS maple syrup per slab of ribs

• 2 TBS apple juice per slab of ribs

• About 1/4 cup of your favorite BBQ rub per slab of ribs • BBQ glaze, made with 4 parts BBQ Sauce and 1-part honey (make enough to glaze ribs and serve on the side!)

COOKING THE RIBS I generally prefer loin ribs (also called back or baby back ribs) as opposed to spare ribs (when trimmed, called St. Louis ribs.)

As I am cooking these for the house, I’m not going to marinade, brine or trim the ribs. I just want a good solid home-style rib for a nice dinner. First, remove the membrane from the back of the ribs. Then, season thoroughly both sides with a sweet Memphis BBQ rub or your favorite seasoning. I try to season the ribs at least 30 minutes before cooking and then let them sit out and “sweat.”

Place on the smoker and allow to cook for two hours. You may need to rotate them depending on the size and the type of grill you are using.

After two hours, get a large piece of heavy-duty foil for each slab you are cooking.

Sprinkle one tablespoon of your rub, one tablespoon of brown sugar and drizzle about one tablespoon of maple syrup on the middle of the foil. Place the ribs meat side down on the foil. Repeat the brown sugar/rub/maple syrup on the bone side of the ribs. Pour in about two tablespoons of apple juice, then wrap in foil and place back in smoker.

Place back on cooker (leaving meat side down) and cook for about two hours.

Check after one hour, then every 15 to 20 minutes after for proper doneness. The meat of the ribs should be pulled back from the rib bone approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, and the rib meat should feel tender.

Carefully remove from foil and place back on grill bone side down. Glaze with the BBQ glaze.

Let sit on grill for five to ten minutes to tighten ribs if desired. Serve and enjoy!

What’s in a Name?

ne of the core (recommended for all dogs) vaccines in all dogs is the DA2LPP vaccine, but what do all those letters actually mean?

P

—Parvovirus: a highly contagious virus that causes severe gastrointestinal signs (vomiting, bloody diarrhea, etc); seen usually in puppies and unvaccinated dogs; can be fatal

- Distemper: a highly contagious virus that can attack a dog’s respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and nervous system (seizures, imbalance, twitching, etc); seen infrequently because of widespread vaccination for this disease but can occur in puppies and unvaccinated adult dogs

There is a combination vaccine available that contains all of the above, including or excluding Leptospirosis.

Vaccination for “Lepto” is almost always recommended, however, with occasional exceptions for vaccine reactions and your dog’s lifestyle factors.

2 - Adenovirus 1 and 2: a contagious virus that can A cause liver or respiratory disease; can also be written using (H) (for hepatitis)
