If you are having a stroke, this is your mortal enemy. You’re probably well aware that a stroke is dangerous; a blockage has cut off, or interrupted, the blood flow to your brain. Tick. Tick. Tick. The blockage needs to be removed, oxygen restored. And the most important factor in accomplishing this? Time. The faster you get to a hospital, the greater the odds of a full and successful recovery. BayCare fully believes that, in addition to a highly trained, experienced staff, you need help, and you need it fast. Which is why BayCare is the only health system in Tampa Bay with 10 hospitals that are certified primary stroke centers. When you or a loved one experiences a stroke, it’s a very serious, lifethreatening emergency. However, when it’s treated quickly, the chance of a good recovery increases dramatically. And to more rapidly assist you, our primary stroke centers are spread throughout the greater Tampa Bay area. So no matter where you live in the four counties we serve, you’re never far from a BayCare stroke center.

Tampa Bay Edition Published monthly by

hether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or National Fruit Cake Day, December is unabashedly the best month of the year. It is a brightly-lit, candy-coated, music-filled month all wrapped up in a big red satiny bow. To me, it feels like a Friday all month long. You are ready for the work to end and the celebrations to begin. Most everyone is in a good mood and goes out of his or her way to do nice things for others (except those parking space thieves at the mall that steal into that spot you’ve been patiently waiting for). The biggest sales of the year happen now so shopping becomes imperative, right ladies? Dress codes are relaxed. Ugly sweaters are the ultimate fashion statement (especially when embellished with cartoon characters, pompoms, lights, jingly things or shoulder pads for an 80s flair). No one will judge you for wearing a Santa hat or bright red jeggings in December. But most of all, this is a time for optimism, good cheer and hope. It’s a time to think about your new, New Year’s Resolutions – do you even remember last year’s? It’s a time to put all the challenges, sorrows and disappointments behind you. To reflect on this year’s mistakes and correct the course if things are headed in the wrong direction. To tidy up and get your house in order. (That means those of you who still have the plywood window décor installed may take it down now. The hurricane

December 12th is National Gingerbread House Day so in celebration we share its history and furnish you with a no-bake recipe to make your own little gingerbread hut. It’s a great way to get in touch with your inner child and there’s nothing like an arts and crafts project that you can eat if it doesn’t turn out right. FILM STARS DON’T DIE YOUNG

Annette Bening to Play Long Sought After Role of Gloria Grahame By MARK HIGLEy

Jimmy Stewart and Gloria Grahame in It’s a Wonderful Life young Turner (Jason Bell) and the once-popular movie star Grahame in 1978 Liverpool. Annette Bening and Jason Bell in Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool Grahame, in her late ‘50s, has cancer and keeps her secret ctress Annette Bening has long harbored hidden from Turner. It’s an affectionate, moving and ambitions to play the role of Academy Award wry recollection of an unusual story with a powerful winner Gloria Grahame. And not just because the cast that includes Academy Award winner Vanessa eccentric Grahame desired much younger guys. Redgrave, Stephen Graham, Kenneth Cranham, and “She had a really interesting presence on screen Julie Walters. and she was a good listener. When you watch her, you Barbara Broccoli, one of the producers, knew feel like there’s an inner life going on and that is what Grahame and Turner when they were together. She had is compelling about her,” said Bening. first spoken to Bening about the part over two decades Now Bening, a four-time nominee, may very well ago, but Bening would have been too young to play it slip in through the back door of the Oscar race with back then. Now at 59, Bening is perfect. her portrayal of the actress often cast as the “tart with “Annette is the only person I would want to play a heart.” this role,” said Broccoli. “She is such a great actress Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool is set to open but she also connects with the character in a profound Dec 22. way.” Based on Peter Turner’s 1986 memoir, the film It doesn’t hurt, either, that there is an uncanny follows the December-May romance between the physical resemblance between the two actresses.

Audiences may not recognize Grahame’s name right away but they will remember her as the gal who couldn’t say no in Oklahoma. She was nominated for an Oscar in Crossfire, snatched one up in The Bad and the Beautiful and played the flirtatious Violet in It’s A Wonderful Life. She brought plenty of vim to the part of the elephant girl in The Greatest Show on Earth. Most of her best work was done in the ‘40s and ‘50s before her sparkling movie career took a nose dive. Bening became fascinated with Grahame when she was making the 1990 film The Grifters with director Stephen Frears. “When I was working on that film Stephen mentioned her to me. The Grifters was a noiresque movie and so it made sense to look at film noir anyway and the women of that period and the way that they were portrayed. Gloria, of course, holds a special place in that period.” The filmmakers wanted to tell Grahame’s story, but in a tactful and delicate manner, much the same as in Turner’s book so there was little weight given to Grahame’s propensity for lust or taboo. She was married four times. Her fourth and most salacious marriage was to actor Anthony “Tony” Ray, 17 years her junior -- and her stepson. Their tryst reportedly began when Tony was 13 years old. Said Bening, “She (Grahame) is not Marilyn Monroe but there is something very unique about her and, God knows, about her personal life. Then looking at this connection she had with Peter, I have ended up thinking that he must have been the gentlest, most loving, accepting person that she probably had ever been with. We need to show that.”

And with the support of our highly trained professionals, who employ our holistic approach to successful aging, life here is engaging and inspiring. Simply put, we’ve created a community where you can continue to live your story, your way, close to your family, friends and physicians.

From this I’ve gained some hardwon insight which birthed the mantra: Kids get cranky, parents get tired; raising kids is a tough job so everyone deserves some slack. My first bit of advice is to keep the visit short. What works for me is a maximum of four days and three nights in each of my kid’s homes. Tops. Like Jerry Seinfeld has said, “Always leave them wanting more.” Accept the fact that some family members welcome you less dramatically and with less fanfare than others and that it has little to do with their

feelings and more to do with their innate personalities. And allow yourself some “down time” to partake in activities endemic to the area where they live. No one is overly invested in spending 24 hours per day with grandma anyway. When you are together, relax and enjoy the magical moments that just unfold organically when you are all in the same room. Face it. Technology is here to stay. When the grands inevitably bring out the devices, cuddle up on the sofa together, use the time to check your email, and view this technological preoccupation as “companionable silence.” When it comes to doling out advice, keep your remarks and observations to matters deemed “critical” to your grandchildren’s health and safety. Remember how you felt on the receiving end when your parents and in-laws would intervene. If the grandkids overindulge in a second bowl of caramel crunch ice cream -- even though they left four string beans on their plate -- let their parents deal with it. Your job is to enjoy them. It’s all about keeping expectations real and ceasing to be self-absorbed and needy. When this happens you will return home with a happy heart and spirit to match. You will have achieved a new level of wisdom. Let them have some space and welcome them with open arms when they were ready to seek you out. And don’t forget to leave early on the fourth day.

was watching the weather on TV today and the weatherman an n o u n ced th at t h e s u n was out, a gator saw its shadow and now we’re having six more months of summer. There are just some things that I, a former northeasterner, am having a hard time getting used to! Moving here has had many benefits, but it also requires some accommodation. I don’t mind one bit that I’ve had to up my pedicure budget since my toes are no longer hidden inside warm winter socks. Getting a foot massage and my toes painted is a small price to pay for no longer having to buy, store and wear all those heavy winter clothes. I no longer shriek if an iguana is found swimming laps in my pool, a falling coconut narrowly misses my head, or a lizard scampers across my bedsheets in the middle of the night. (Now a roach is a different matter.) I have accepted that we have three seasons rather than four: warm, hot and hotter and that hurricanes bring refreshing bouts of cooler air, albeit, at 100 or more miles an hour. But I simply can’t get used to Christmas in Florida. My nose should be red from the cold, not sunburn. The Salvation Army person outside the supermarket should not be

perspiring. And the sight of a woman in a skimpy bathing suit, standing on a ladder stringing up Christmas lights is just wrong on so many levels. B u t m o s t l y, i t ’s t h e h o l i d a y music. The lyrics are completely out of sync with our reality. Just think about poor Frosty the Snowman. Here, he’s in a life-and-death struggle for survival, which, of course, he will ultimately lose. I recommend that some of our favorites be rewritten to more authentically reflect the weather outside, which is far from frightful. I offer the following suggestions: The first revision is to the song, Oh Christmas Tree. Oh humidity, oh humidity You’re withering my Christmas tree.... Silver Bells is much more suitable as: Silver shells, silver shells It’s Christmas time in Miami.... This last change is to Winter Wonderland. The a/c sings, are you listenin’ On my skin, sweat is glistenin’... In the meantime, I’ll be humming Fa-la-la-la-la in Florida.

The True Tale of the Gingerbread Man

How an Armenian monk brought gingerbread to the West and happiness to children, young and old… By TERRI BRyCE REEVES St Gregory

T

hank Armenian monk, Gregory Markar of Nicopolis, if you are a gingerbread aficionado. After he was chased out of his homeland by the Persian Army in the 10th century, he arrived in France where he led a simple life, living off wild roots and honey. He became a well-liked holy man in his new country and introduced French Christians to gingerbread, a dark concoction made from honey and spices. The French taught the Germans how to make it, they taught the Swedes and so forth. When the Brothers Grimm created the tale of Hansel and Gretel, the notion of festive snowy cottages made out of gingerbread became a popular one. Today gingerbread houses are symbols of the holiday season; December 12 is National Gingerbread House Day.

The 2017 Gingerbread Festival returns to Westfield Sarasota Square December 15-17. Gingerbread houses, crafted by more than 150 local schools, youth groups, businesses, and nonprofit organizations will be on display. Houses on display may be reserved for purchase. Those wishing to make their own gingerbread palace should check out www.gingerbreadhouse-heaven.com which features a variety of recipes, photos and templates – from the simple to the very elaborate. Be warned: some of these projects could take up a whole weekend to make. Not into that kind of herculean effort?

Consider gingerbread kits which have everything you need inside; just assemble and decorate. Or try the recipe below which is easy and fun to make.

Gingerbread Hut Recipe

Graham crackers are the foundation for this project, so grab the grands for some memorable family time. Ingredients: Graham crackers, original or chocolate-flavored (6 per house) Royal Icing: 3 c. powdered sugar, 2 egg whites, and 1 tsp. vanilla extract Paper plates to build on Assorted candy, sticks of gum, sprinkles, cereal, pretzels.

Directions: • Make the icing by whipping up the egg whites until frothy. Add the sugar and vanilla and whip for 7 to 9 minutes – until the icing makes stiff peaks. Load icing into a quart-size Ziploc bag. Cut a tiny hole cut in one corner. • Cut ¼ piece off of the ends of 4 crackers using a serrated knife and gentle pressure. To form two gable end pieces, take two of those crackers and cut diagonal lines from the long centerline to the midline. You will have two rectangular sides and two gable ends. The two remaining full-size crackers will be used for the roof. • To assemble, pipe a line of icing along the bottom of one of the rectangular sides and adhere it to a paper plate. Pipe icing along the bottom and inside edges of one of the gabled ends and join the two pieces together, carefully sticking the gable panel to the paper plate as well. • Repeat with other side wall and gable end and you will have the base of your house built. Let the icing set up for 30 minutes. • Apply icing along the top of the two gable panels and attach the roof. • Pipe icing along the peak of the roof for extra stability. Allow to dry for at least another 30 minutes; overnight drying is ideal. • Decorate with icing and your favorite candies or treats. Lifestyles After 50 • Tampa Bay • December 2017 • page 11

he Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers presents A Tuna Christmas playing Nov. 16 – Dec. 25. Preceded by Greater Tuna, it’s the second in a series of comedic plays.

So funny it could make a raccoon laugh affectionately at Davy Crockett...It’s far too good for just Christmas. ~New York Post

JAN 19-21

JAN 12 – MAR 11

The action takes place during the holiday season in Tuna, Texas, the thirdsmallest town in the Lone Star State where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. Two actors portray 24 eccentric town characters trying to cope with seasonal traumas such as the disaster-prone little theatre production of A Christmas Carol, and a yard-decorating contest being sabotaged by a mysterious Christmas phantom. The Off Broadway Palm is an intimate 100-seat theatre, located in the main lobby of Broadway Palm. Performances are Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. Ticket prices range from $39 - $59 with group discounts available for parties of 20 or more. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling (239) 278-4422, by visiting www.BroadwayPalm.com or by stopping by the box office at 1380 Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers.

Poetry Corner A blank canvas on which to write Anything I feel that comes into sight The water, the sand, the shore where they meet The birds and the pelicans out for a treat The people are walking, one or two abreast Discussing the world, how to make it the best A bit of a breeze to keep us all cool From the heat of the sun, the sky’s precious jewel On the beach there’s no schedule of things to be done Just lying or swimming, playing and fun, The shoulders relax, the mind can let go The person responds and gets back in the flow

How did it get so darn complicated The 9 to 5 world is surely outdated No one should work more than part-time Above food and shelter, there’s no reason or rhyme The woods and the water are here everyday We’re all so serious, we forgot how to play Life is for living, don’t waste it away I’m at the beach and here I will stay

hen John Fred misheard the track of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, (he thought Paul McCartney was singing “Lucy in disguise with diamonds”) he decided to create a sendup of the Fab Four’s work. Before long he and fellow musician pal Andrew Bernard were filling notebooks with such pseudo-psychedelic lyrics as “Cantaloupe eyes come to me tonight” and “Lemonade pies with a brand new car” and “Cross your heart with your living bra.” (Thank you, Playtex, for that last inspiration.) John Fred Gourrier was born in 1941 in Baton Rouge, La. The son of one-time Detroit Tigers third baseman Fred Gourrier, young Fred was a standout athlete at Catholic High School. He also loved southern R & B—rhythm and blues—and, at age 15, formed a blue-eyed soul group with several classmates. They called themselves John Fred and the Playboys, named after Hugh Hefner’s popular magazine. In time, the Playboys disbanded to concentrate on their schoolwork. Fred earned an education degree from Louisiana State College but soon found that the music world held more interest for him than did the classroom. He formed a new John Fred and the Playboys and signed onto the Paula Records label in Shreveport. Eventually he brought Judy in Disguise (with Glasses) to his band, only to find that most of the members hated it. After all, they groused, theirs

was a respectable R & B outfit and above such nonsense. Despite the Playboys’ objections, Judy in Disguise (with Glasses) was recorded. It featured a cacophony of brass, strings, piano, sitar, bass,

drums and guitar. And gasps and moans. And ascending strings that matched the Beatles’ A Day in the Life. Coincidentally, it was John Fred and His Playboy Band’s goofy novelty that knocked the Fab Four’s Hello Goodbye out of first place on the Billboard chart. When Judy in Disguise (with Glasses) hit worldwide, Fred and his musical posse toured both America and the UK. In England, they met Paul McCartney and John Lennon, who both loved the parody. Wordplay-loving Lennon even joked that, when he went home that day, he was going to sit down and write a similar fun song. He said he would call it Froggy in a Pond with Spectacles.

Randal C. Hill, a former disc jockey, English teacher, record collector and author, confesses to being hopelessly stuck in the past when it comes to music appreciation. He lives on the Oregon coast and can be reached at wryterhill@msn.com.

The Gift that Grows by DaviD Novak

A

s we approach the Christmas season, often an older client will ask about any gifting strategies to their grandchildren. I typically respond with one of my favorites—to contribute to a Roth IRA for them. The obvious benefit of doing this is the power of compounding. If you made a single, $5,500 contribution to a child’s Roth IRA at age 15, and that money grows at an annual 7% return, it will be worth more than $160,000 at age 65. If this same child waited until 35 to contribute to the Roth, assuming the same 7% return, they would need to save $22,000 to reach the same amount. The most important requirement for making this Roth contribution is that the grandchild has earned income. If this is the case, anybody—you, the grandchild, or even someone else—can actually contribute the money, up to a current annual limit of $5,500. (If the child has earned income of $3,000, you can only contribute $3,000; with earned income of $10,000, you can only contribute $5,500.) Keep in mind, however, a couple of points about earned income. First, this does not include income from a gift or an allowance; it has to be income earned from work (and able to be documented). Additionally, the income has to be reasonable compensation. The IRS wants to make sure you aren’t paying your grandchild $2,000 to mow the lawn one weekend. If your grandchild is a minor, there will need to be a custodian for the account. This can be you, or one of the grandchildren’s parents. The custodian will make all investment decisions in the account. Once the child reaches the age of majority, he or she will assume full ownership of the account. Keep in mind that this will also mean he or she will then be responsible for making all investment decisions (and also give you a wonderful teaching opportunity with respect to saving and investing money). The beauty of Roth IRAs is that the money inside them grows tax deferred while in the account, and as long as the account has been opened for five years, can be taken out tax-free for such things as education expenses, buying a first home, etc, subject to certain conditions. Of course, the best thing to do is leave the money in the Roth, and allow decades of tax deferred compounding to work its magic. Lab, an interactive hands-on exhibit. Save taxes with a “Living” Trust by William R. mumbaueR, attoRney www.flwillstrustsprobate.com

A

reader asks: My mother wants to add my name to the deed to her home to avoid probate when she dies. Is this a good idea from a tax standpoint? Answer: It depends. If your mother’s home has appreciated significantly, adding you as a joint owner on her deed will end up costing you much more in capital gain taxes when you sell the home after she dies then what you will save by avoiding probate. For example, let’s say your mother’s house was worth $100,000.00 when she bought it, but the day she dies its worth $300,000.00. If you inherit the home, you will also inherit

the stepped-up basis (or date of death value) of $300,000.00. This means that if you then sell the home, you would have no gain and you would owe nothing in taxes. However, if you are added to your mother’s deed, you will receive the stepped-up bases in only half of the value of your mother’s home when she dies. If you turn around and sell the home, you will be stuck with significant capital gain

taxes on one-half of the appreciated value of $200,000.00 of your mother’s home. A much better approach would be for your mother to place her home into a “Living” Trust naming you as the beneficiary. Not only will the time, expense and aggravation associated with probate be avoided, but you will have no tax liability when you sell the home.

Don’t Be Myth-Led By Dr. BoB Encinosa

O

bviously we talk to pet owners a lot. Here are a few of the more common “myths” I hear. Myth: Getting water in a dog’s ears causes ear infections. Truth: Ear infections in dogs are almost never caused by bathing or swimming. Allergies and fleas are by far, the most common causes of ear infections in dogs.

Myth: Having a big yard ensures that your dog gets enough exercise. Truth: Just letting a dog into the yard provides very little exercise. Most dogs will sniff and check out the perimeter, then find a nice spot to lie down and sleep. To ensure that your dog gets enough exercise, you’ll need to do something active with them in the yard or take them for a walk, where the new smells, sights and sounds get them excited about walking.

?

?

?

Myth: Purring means that a cat is happy. Truth: While a happy cat will often purr, so can very ill cats. Myth: If a dog or cat is not crying or moaning, they are not in pain. Truth: Dogs and cats are not whimps (like us). They do not generally whine or cry with mild to moderate pain. I often hear pet owners relay to me that their limping pet must not

be in pain since it is not crying. Again, dogs and cats are not whimps, but neither are they liars. If they’re limping, it hurts. Myth: Dogs eat grass because they are nauseated or sick. Truth: It is true that dogs can regurgitate more readily than humans, a trait that probably serves to protect them from frequent dietary indiscretions. But many dogs, including one of my own simply like to eat grass sometimes. Barring sprayed toxins on the grass, it is not a harmful habit. Thinking Outside the Cable Box

Streaming media devices offer a return to free television O

ver 60 years ago when my parents purchased a black & white screen television, with an antenna perched on our roof and three free network channels to watch, my life changed. Instead of going to Saturday matinee movies, weekend entertainment came to a box in our living room every day. Fast-forward to 2017 and television programming is available 24/7 with full-length movies, live sports, kid programs, adult entertainment, instant news, drama, weather, food, home and garden, music and even constant broadcast from space.

Lifestyles After 50 • Tampa Bay • December 2017 • page 20

Unlimited options, but it all comes with a high price from satellite TV and cable conglamorates. As a seasoned citizen on a restricted budget, I felt a need to seek an alternative to my massive monthly billing statement. After extensive research I discovered the ideal solution: a streaming media device. Excellent products can be found at $100 or under. Because there is a veritable smorgasbord of available choices, selecting the ideal device for you and your system can be a daunting task. You’ll want to make sure that your device is compatible with your TV, which may feature HDR (high dynamic range) or 4K resolution capabilities. Check to see if the services offer the content you want to watch and that the content can be found through an easy-to-use interface to avoid long periods of searching. Look for good connection speeds. Other op-

tions in the digital ecosystem may include such things as card slots, USB ports and headphone jacks. Do your homework. Research the Internet. Talk to sales reps in stores selling the devices. Patience is mandatory while sorting through the apps (such as YouTube) in search of finding the right link, but for those who persist, the rewards are exceptional: no monthly cable or satellite service fees. You will have access to unlimited entertainment including live sports, current and classic movies, hundreds of network channels, and thousands of international broadcasting stations. Please note, some streaming devices may contain apps that offer programs (such as premium movies) for small or annual fee. So what is not to like about streaming television? Have not found anything yet, but it feels great to return to the era of FREE television.

I

remember a lot about my early years, probably because Dad was a professional photographer and my life was chronicled in pictures from my birth right on up until I was 12 or 13 years old. Then my parents went their separate ways. My mother was the display manager at the JCPenney store in our little town. Together, she and my dad made the family Christmas cards by hand. There are early black and whites of me gazing out the window with the Christmas tree in the background, my face and eyes turned upward as if to see Mr. Claus making his descent. They also created costumes for my brother, Richard, and me to wear in the photos. In one, we were shepherds turning our faces skyward to scan the heavens for the brightest star as we stood barefoot in the ‘snow’ -- actually a crispy white sheet draped across the bed. Accompanying the photos were greetings written meticulously in colored pencil by my Dad, who’d been trained in architectural drawing. Christmas season also meant the annual drive to Cincinnati to see the animated figures in Shillito’s store windows. Shillito’s was Cincinnati’s first department store and no other store had such fabulous displays. Christmas carols were abundant but a little confusing back then. One of my favorites was Good King Winkle Sauce. I had no clue as to whom or what “winkle sauce” was since no one had ever served it during meals.

Shepherd boys Richard (left) and Mike Wright in story Then there’s the song where reindeer are assigned feline and canine attributes with the lyrics “Up on the housetop, reindeer paws…” Really? For many years, my wife’s email address was Ms.PossumBrown@ (whatever.com). When I asked her where she came up with that name she responded, “You know! It’s from that song: ‘In the meadow we can build a snowman; and pretend that he is Possum Brown…’” Time passes by. The Shillito’s building has been converted to upscale apartments. Christmas carols have become earworms of prematurely-played background “muzak” made to get us into the buying mood. And I never receive any handmade Christmas cards. Bah! Humbug!

Stuff Yourself Not the Pets

T

he holidays are wonderful times to get together with family and friends, but they also pose risks to your pets who digest food differently than we do. Help keep the little turkeys healthy by following these safety tips. Foods Foods you may feed your pets include plain, white turkey meat; plain sweet potatoes, yams, and canned pumpkin; raw apples (no seeds); steamed vegetables (green beans or broccoli) and rice. Foods you SHOULD NOT feed your pets are turkey skin, drippings, gravy, twine or bones; corn on the cob; onions, garlic and mushrooms; raisins and grapes; sage; fat trimmings and fatty foods; bread dough; chocolate, sweets and alcohol. In addition: • Keep your pets away from all decorative plants and festive table decorations (they may contain toxic plants). • Make sure all foods are not close to table and counter edges. • Put trash where your pet can’t reach it. • Make sure IDs are on your pet in case they bolt out the door as you’re welcoming guests. • Know where your closest pet emergency center is located in case of problems. ~ Tips Courtesy Animal Hospital of Dunedin

Social Security Social Security ~ The Gift That Keeps Giving

A

s you prepare for a financially secure future, know that there are five benefits that you, your spouse, and your children may become eligible for through Social Security: Retirement benefits -- If you’ve earned enough credits, you can start receiving your full retirement benefits at age 66 or 67 — depending on when you were born. You may choose to claim reduced benefits as early as age 62, but waiting until after your full retirement age increases your benefit amount by up to 8 percent per year to age 70. Disability benefits offer a financial lifeline if you’re struck by a serious medical condition that makes it impossible for you to work for at least a year or that will result in death. Child benefits support your minor children while you’re receiving retirement or disability benefits. This financial support also is available to adult children who become disabled before age 22. Grandchildren and stepchildren may qualify in certain situations. Spousal benefits supplement a couple’s income if one of the two never worked or had low lifetime earnings. In some cases, this benefit is also available to divorced spouses. Survivor benefits ease the financial burden on your loved ones after you die by providing monthly payments to eligible widows, widowers, children, and dependent parents. It’s likely the survivor benefits you have under Social Security carry greater value than your individual life-insurance policy. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov for more information.

MULLED WINE

artha Dean of Ft. Myers serves mulled wine to her friends during her annual “Drink and Run” holiday event each year. Guests stop by, eat some hors d’oeuvre, sip some of the concoction and leave with a small wrapped gift. “This is my kind of drink,” she said. “Who needs something complicated? Who wants to serve multiple types of liquor and mixers when this one fills the room with such a festive aroma? And it makes such an attractive centerpiece when surrounded with greenery, pine cones and candles.” Mulled wine is a most festive holiday beverage. Created in the second century, it was made by the Romans who would heat wine to keep themselves warm in cold temperatures. As they conquered Europe throughout the next century, their love for mulled wine spread across the regions. This drink is still immensely popular in Europe because it is a sweet, special beverage that can be enjoyed anywhere--in full-fledged family gatherings, small get-togethers with friends, or even alone cuddled up with a good book. There are non-alcoholic versions of mulled wine, but this is my favorite recipe because it is so easy and friends love it.

Mulled Wine By KATHY MEGYERI Ingredients: 1 orange, sliced and seeded 1 c. cranberries 1/2 c. sugar 2 c. water 1 tsp. ground cloves 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 bottle robust red wine Splash of brandy (optional) Rosemary for garnish Directions: • Combine orange, cranberries, sugar, water, cloves and cinnamon in a large stainless steel or enameled pot (not aluminum). • Slowly bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 min. • Reduce heat, add wine (and optional brandy) and slowly reheat but do not boil the alcohol out. • Serve warm in glass mugs (optional) with rosemary as garnish. You can also place the mixture in a slow cooker (on low) where it will make your home smell amazing. Any leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.

Healthy Eating Strategies for the Holidays W

hen an average slice of pumpkin pie and scoop of vanilla ice cream can contain 46 grams of sugar – nearly twice the recommended daily added sugar intake of 25 grams for women and well above the recommendation of 36 grams for men– the holidays can be hazardous for anyone watching their waistlines. Sweets are never more available and tempting than during the holiday season, but with some healthy swaps and strategies, it’s easy to eat healthier this holiday season. • When preparing desserts, substitute whole-wheat flour instead of regular flour in a recipe to make it healthier, or use ½ regular and ½ whole-wheat if you want to ease into it. • Mashed bananas and applesauce make great substitutions for fat in a recipe. • Natural sweeteners such as shredded carrots, zucchini or beets can also be incorporated into recipes so you won’t need to use as much sugar. • Prepare small desserts such as mini-cheesecakes or mini-cupcakes to help with portion control. • Always have some berries as a side with your dessert – they’re naturally filling and you won’t be

as tempted to eat as much dessert. • Don’t starve yourself or skip a meal in anticipation of a holiday party feast later in the day. Your body will hold on to every calorie and you’ll end up putting on more weight. • To prevent overindulging, eat something filling before going to a party so you don’t arrive hungry. • If you have a special dietary restriction or a health condition that prohibits you from eating certain foods, let the host of your party know ahead of time. Generally, they will accommodate you because they want you to have a good time. If not, you ate that toast ahead of time, right? • Holidays can be a stressful time, which can result in eating more food. Instead, try to deal with stress by going for a walk each day, or doing activities like yoga or meditation. • Eat what you want in moderation, said Shreela Sharma, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and

Environmental at University of Texas Health School of Public Health. “Denying ourselves food groups never works,” she said. “Food is not the enemy – it’s such an important part of who we are and our social lives. It’s portioning that’s the big trick.” Source: University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Lifestyles After 50 • Tampa Bay • December 2017 • page 27
