MAY WAYS H ello May and all those special days you bring: Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Cinco de Mayo and even National Dance Like a Chicken Day or National Pack Rat Day. You also host a month of appreciation for many of our readers, older Americans.

Led by the Administration on Aging, part of the Administration for Community Living, Older Americans Month was established in 1963, when only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday.

About a third of these persons were impoverished with few programs to meet their needs.

Concern for their welfare grew and in April 1963, President John F. Kennedy, along with members of the National Council of Senior Citizens, designated May as Senior Citizens Month, which later became known as Older Americans Month.

Today the number of Americans ages 65 and older is 46 million and expected to increase to over 98 million by 2060, according to the Population Reference Bureau’s report, “Aging in the United States.”

Wow. In this issue, we focus on the Baby Boomer generation – its members turning between 55 and 73 years old this year. As they age, their sheer numbers will create a tsunami of challenges for our healthcare system in the decades to come. But we’re not just picking on them. Humorist Susan Goldfein pokes fun at her generation, the Silent one, and longs for a new moniker – one that can make her proud.

We wish all Moms a Happy Mother’s Day. Be sure to check out Kathy Megyeri’s piece on a few Florida mothers who gave birth to some important ideas and institutions that helped shape our state. Great News ‘Ding’ Darling Announces High School Photo Contest Winners

A

t a recent ceremony, the “Ding” Darling Wildlife SocietyFriends of the Refuge (DDWS) announced winners and finalists in the sixth annual “Ding” DarlingTheodore Cross High School Photography Contest.

Sponsored by the Theodore Cross Family Charitable Foundation, the competition invited high school Contest judges Andrew West, Laura Harkey students from Lee, Collier, Charlotte, and Bill Miller hold winning photos with Glades, and Hendry counties to contest coordinators Sierra Hoisington and compete for prizes.

Generation_______?

I

t occurred to me that my entire generation is invisible. I arrived at this sad conclusion because we’ve been overlooked by those who bestow catchy cohort labels.

Specifically, I’m referring to people born between 1926 and 1946. We number almost 28 million, yet we exist without a cultural tag. I resent this. This is no legacy to leave our children and grandchildren, otherwise known as the Xs, Ys, and possibly the Zs! Born too late to be World War II heroes and too soon for the post-war birth explosion, we’re sandwiched awkwardly between the Greatest Generation and Baby Boomers.

Maybe if we understood the genesis of generation-naming, we could create something clever and catchy for ourselves.

Tom Brokaw bestowed the label “Greatest Generation” on those born between 1901 and 1926. I don’t disagree. They survived the Depression and fought in the deadliest conflict in human history.

And the Boomers? Those born between 1946 and 1964 think they’re so special. Who can blame them with all the attention they’ve gotten from the media and marketers. So what if they earned lots of money, invented rock ‘n’ roll and passed out at Woodstock?

Generation-naming is continuing its forward march, leaving us further behind. Gen X covers the

years 1966 to the early 80s. The X originally meant the fate of this generation was unknown. Gen Y was so-called simply because it followed X. Xers are also known as Millennials because the majority came of age after the turn of the century. But I’m getting a little tired of all the tweeting, selfietaking and Instagramming – talk about the “me” generation.

(What else can you expect from a peer group that wins ribbons just for showing up?)

Have you heard about Gen Z, aka iGen? Born after 2001, they’ve caught the attention of the cultural pulsetakers, while their grandparents and great grandparents slip further into obscurity. Which brings us to today, when I’m sure someone is attempting to figure out a catchy moniker to reflect the zeitgeist of a generation yet to be born.

So back to the nameless masses. We have been referred to as “Depression Babies” or “War Babies,” but those are such downers. Others have called us the “Silent Generation” because we didn’t make waves, worked hard, and stuck by our good oldfashioned values. Borrr-ing.

So dear cohorts, here’s the challenge. Don your thinking caps and come up with a generational name we can be proud of. Send your suggestions to me at the email address below.

HERE COMES THE SILVER TSUNAMI As baby boomers ride the swell into the future, they will redefine aging in America

Remember, the baby boomers made health and fitness fads mainstream.

(Didn’t they invent jogging?) They got physical with aerobics, racquetball, surfing, disco dancing and yoga.

While some fell off the fitness wagon in middle age, as a whole, they still tend to be more proactive about their health through exercise and proper nutrition than previous generations. This will undoubtedly pay dividends in future outcomes as this population ages.

T

he year 2030 marks a crucial demographic turning point in U.S. history according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s report: National Population Projections.

By 2030, all baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) will be over age 65. One in every five residents will be retirement age.

“The aging of baby boomers means that within just a couple decades, older people are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history,” said Jonathan Vespa, U.S. Census Bureau demographer. “By 2035, there will be 78 million people 65 years and older compared to 76.7 million under the age of 18.”

The 2030s are predicted to be a transformative decade for the U.S. population. If trends continue, the population will expand at a slower pace, age significantly and become more racially and ethnically diverse. Net international migration is projected to become the primary driver of population growth in the United States (as opposed to births) – another demographic first for the United States.

The graying of America will present many challenges for government agen-

cies, caregivers, taxpayers, hospitals and other healthcare organizations.

Who will take care of this population whose sheer numbers could overwhelm the healthcare system as chronic conditions (such as dementia and cancer) accumulate with age? What will the financial costs be?

Before we hit the panic button, let’s take a look at these babies born after World War II. Boomers are wealthy – well, some of them As a whole, baby boomers possess more than two-thirds of this country’s disposable income. They control $46 trillion in wealth and are projected to inherit $15 trillion in the next two decades, according to Forbes magazine.

Yet, about 45% of the boom generation report having no retirement savings at all.

They will likely live longer – and more independently – than previous generations Advances in medicine will have the potential to extend longevity and improve the ability of these older Ameri-

Baby boomers are benefitting from emerging technologies With access to information on the internet at their fingertips, baby boomers are an informed and confident bunch, frequently googling medical issues to learn what they can about potential diseases and treatments.

Other developing technologies will be steadily on their side.

While we aren’t yet seeing Jetson-like flying cars, today’s older seniors are already benefitting from the use of wearable gadgets, voice recognition systems, delivery services, transportation services, personal alarms and sensors that track vital signs.

Self-driving cars may soon be a part of the everyday roadscape and robots (in the form of humanoids or pets) are beginning to help look after grandma and keep her in her own home by assisting with communication, medication management and monitoring. And virtual appointments will allow those with mobility or transportation issues to consult with their medical practitioners as needed.

The future holds unheralded medical miracles Boomers are coming of old age at a good time. Medical treatments and drug therapies should look much different by 2030, 2040 and 2050.

Already, advances in minimally-inva-

sive and robotic techniques have made surgeries safer with shorter and less painful recovery time.

Stem cell therapies are showing promise in curing diseases and repairing tissues.

We now can identify genes that cause disease which is leading to better treatment outcomes. Cancer drugs have turned some kinds of once-fatal diseases into chronic illnesses.

And, we are doing a better job of managing conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes more effectively.

Alzheimer’s disease, which takes a serious toll on caregivers and creates a substantial financial burden on the healthcare system, has been tougher to tackle. A new study projects that the disease will be responsible for 25 percent of all Medicare spending by 2040.

However, our better understanding of the brain, improved imaging and detection techniques, and emerging drug and cognitive therapies could make prevention and treatment a reality someday.

Indeed, the so-called “Me Generation,” the one that said they’d never grow old, will do just that, but in a different way. And our guess is, they won’t go gently into that good night.

This Mothers’ Day we pay tribute to some of the women whose efforts and achievements helped improve and enrich the lives of Floridians and other Americans. Not all bore children, but their societal contributions have left a positive impact on our environment, our educational and legal systems, in aviation, and on our state and country.

An American journalist, author, women’s suffrage advocate and conservationist, Douglas was known for her steadfast protection of the Everglades when some considered it a worthless swamp that should be drained and developed. In 1947, she penned The Everglades: River of Grass which forever changed Americans’ perception of the land with its first sentence, “There are no other Everglades in the world.”

Five years after the book’s publication, the Everglades became a national park.

When she was 79, Douglas founded the Friends of the Everglades to protest the construction of a jetport; she explained her activism by saying, “It’s a women’s business to be interested in the environment. It’s an extended form of housekeeping.” She was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient on her 105th birthday. Unfortunately, a high school named in her honor was the site of the 2018 Valentine’s Day mass shooting in Parkland.

Cochran was a journalist, the owner of a cosmetics company and a pioneer in the field of aviation. Born in Pensacola, she would become one of the foremost racing pilots of her generation, setting records for speed, distance and altitude.

Cochran was the first woman to break the sound barrier, to fly a bomber across the Atlantic, and to make a blind instrument landing. She designed the first oxygen mask and was the first pilot to fly 20,000 feet to test it.

She helped to form the wartime Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and was the first civilian woman to win a Distinguished Service Medal. She was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 1992.

She is arguably the greatest female pilot in aviation history as she held more records than any other pilot, male or female. She likely would have received more recognition if not for the unfortunate passing of Amelia Earhart.

One of Florida’s most powerful and influential First Ladies, Jennings led a variety of civic and philanthropic organizations. She was the daughter of a state senator and wife of our 18th governor, William Sherman Jennings, who presided from 1901 to 1905. Her political knowledge, connections, social skills and smarts were exceptional and helped propel her husband’s career. At the time, women were not considered suitable candidates for political office.

An activist for many causes, Jennings crusaded tirelessly for environmental conservation, child welfare, the state library, prison and educational reform, historic preservation and highway beautification. In 1921 she co-founded the Florida State League of Women Voters.

She was also called the “Mother of Florida Forestry” for helping to promote the legislative act for the creation of the Florida State Board of Forestry.

Bethune was an American educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, humanitarian and civil rights activist. In 1904, she established the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls. It would eventually become a college and later, BethuneCookman University. Considered the nation’s expert on black education, Bethune served as an adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his “black cabinet.” She also founded a boys’ club, a high school, a library, a hospital and a nursing school. She pushed for the integration of the Red Cross and the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.

n December 2000, President Bill Clinton signed into law The National Moment of Remembrance Act, a legal requirement stating that at 3 p.m. each Memorial Day, every American citizen is to observe a moment of respect for fallen soldiers everywhere.

One has to wonder how many folks actually observe this law – or even know about it.

Memorial Day was initially called Decoration Day, and its initial celebration took place on May 30, 1868, three years after the Civil War ended. The date was established by Major General John A. Logan who knew that flowers would be in bloom nationwide at that time. The first remembrance was dedicated by General James Garfield (he wasn’t president yet) at the Arlington National Cemetery, which, until 1864, had been Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s sprawling plantation.

At the time, Decoration Day honored only fallen Union soldiers, with flowers, flags and wreaths placed on their tombstones. In the South, women in Columbus, Miss. laid flowers on the graves of both the Union and Confederate soldiers in the city’s Friendship Cemetery, proclaiming their own first Decoration Day in 1866.

Later, Federal Memorial Day, established in 1888, allowed Civil War veterans from both sides who worked for the U. S. government to honor their deceased comrades without being docked a day’s pay. After World War I, the day was expanded to honor the war dead from all American wars.

Although it wasn’t official until 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968, thus setting Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and ensuring a three-day weekend for federal employees.

Some Southern states still retain Confederate Memorial Days, with Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia choosing dates in January, April, May and June to pay tribute.

If you display Old Glory on Memorial Day, be aware that all flags should be flown at half-mast until noon, at which time they are to be raised to the top of the staff and lowered at day’s end.

Today people observe Memorial Day in many different ways with some visiting cemeteries and memorials and others enjoying barbecues, picnics and pool parties. Some may reflect quietly on the gravitas of the day or perhaps recall the words of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose classic 1882 poem “Decoration Day” honored the military fallen and ended with these poignant words:
