rug prices in the United States are out of control, and I’m thrilled to see that Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida legislators are doing something about it this session. Their plan to import safe, more affordable drugs from FDA-approved facilities in other countries will save Floridians up to 80 percent on what they currently pay for prescription drugs. That’s a plan I’m proud to stand behind.

Health care costs in America are astronomical, and the exorbitant costs of prescription drugs contribute significantly to the price we pay for health care. Americans spend $3.5 trillion per year on health care, and $334 billion (or roughly 10 percent) of that spending is on prescription drugs. Meanwhile, drugs produced in other countries can be just as safe and far more affordable.

There are already 300,000 facilities inspected and approved by the FDA in 150 countries. Allowing providers and consumers to access the products produced at these facilities will bring costs down, saving Floridians as much as 80 percent on prescription drugs.

The legislation stems from Gov. DeSantis’s proposal, and it is a priority for House Speaker Jose Oliva. The measure earned a favorable vote in its first committee stop with support from both Republicans and Democrats on the committee.

This is a real opportunity for Florida to be a leader in putting the health and wellbeing of our patients above all else. At Tampa General, we applaud Gov. Here’s what you can do to have a positive impact.

Be a bag lady (or man). Keep a supply of old-fashioned totes with you on your shopping trips. Such bags are reusable, washable, easy to carry, fold and store, and they serve a multitude of purposes. Unlike supermarket plastic bags, they don’t break, tear or pollute the world’s water systems. Reuse those plastic newspaper sleeves to collect your doggie’s doo on walks. It keeps it from washing into bays, rivers and lakes – and makes for happier neighbors too.

Go low-flow. Cutting back on water usage at home means a lower monthly bill and conserving a precious resource. Low- or dualflush toilets and low-flow shower heads cut water use dramatically. This Earth Day, go car-free, walking for short trips or using public transportation for longer ones. Then make it a habit. A four-mile round-trip by bicycle keeps about 15 pounds of pollutants out of our air.

On April 22, 1970, U. S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded the first Earth Day and 20 million Americans packed streets, parks and auditoriums that day to learn about the dangers of oil spills, polluting factories, raw-sewage dumping, toxic pesticides and chemicals, and concerns about threatened or endangered wildlife. It launched a new wave of environmental activism and now is observed each year around the globe by over 1 billion environmentally conscious people.

Rockin’ Oysters Rockfeller

e pay homage to this little blue marble we call Earth with a recipe that celebrates sustainable ingredients from land and sea. Oysters on the half-shell topped with a rich sauce of cheeses, bread crumbs, lemons and sea salt make the perfect hors d’oeuvres or entrée for Earth Day (April 22) or any day that’s a bit special.

Ingredients 3 dozen Florida oysters, shucked and on the half shell 2 c. Florida spinach, cooked and squeezed dry 1 Florida bell pepper (any color), diced small 3-4 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled 1 c. mozzarella cheese, shredded 1/2 c. parmesan cheese, grated 1/2 c. bread crumbs 2 Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped fine 1 tsp. of hot pepper sauce 1 lemon, juiced 2 lemons, quartered for garnish Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste Preparation Preheat oven to high broil. In a bowl combine and mix together the spinach, bell pepper, bacon, cheeses, parsley, hot sauce and lemon juice. Taste and adjust with salt and pepper, if needed. Place one tablespoon or so of the spinach mixture on top of each oyster. Place on a sheet pan and put under the broiler for two or three minutes. The cooking process will happen rather quickly, so observe the whole time. Oysters will start to curl around the edges and filling will be golden and bubbly. Remove and serve warm with quartered lemons.

The Right to Bare Arms s we approach warmer weather, women over a certain age, say 60, will once again face that nagging fashion dilemma: to go bare, or don’t even dare. I’m not talking about decisions regarding skimpy bathing suits – that shop closed a long time ago. No, I’m talking upper arms, the part of the body that tends to sag and flap thanks to our good friends, time and gravity.

The other night I was dining with some BFFs, and somehow the conversation rerouted from global warming to apparel without sleeves.

There is a certain logic to this detour. Anyway, even the most petite among us stated she was starting to feel awkward about going sleeveless. OMG, I thought. Upper arms have become the new neck.

As the only person at the table who had dared to go bare, the seeds of doubt were immediately sown. Although I’ve been a dedicated triceps toner, I began to wonder if perhaps the jiggly, Jello-look had finally caught up with me. I immediately reached for my sweater, blaming my cover-up on the excessive use of air-conditioning in south Florida establishments.

Later, needing an objective opinion about the true state of my upper arms, I turned to my husband.

“Honey,” I said, “what do you

think about my arms?”

“Your arms? I haven’t given much thought to your arms.”

“My upper arms. Do you think they’re in good shape?”

“As compared with who?”

(Thank goodness he didn’t say Michelle Obama.)

After correcting his grammar, I recounted the dinner conversation. He made an enormous effort not to laugh, patted my shoulder, and told me I had nothing to worry about. I impulsively turned to see if the pat had triggered any fatty tissue undulations.

So, as older women, we may not be fond of our upper arms, and I bet we’re not too crazy about our knees, either – nor our upper thighs. But summer’s coming.

What to do?

Stay inside and plead seasonal affective disorder? Cover up and sweat it out in the oppressive Florida heat? Or throw caution to the wind and say we are too old to worry about what others think?

I think the answer is to strike a nice balance and wear comfortable clothing that makes us look and feel good.

Just the other day, I happen to notice a very attractive “older” woman. She was stylishly dressed with beautiful hair and earrings and yes, she was sleeveless!

Good for you, lady, I thought. It’s a hot day. Why not?

Alcohol Awareness Month Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the U.S. Nearly 18 million people – one in every 12 adults – suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence; several million more engage in risky binge drinking patterns. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) has designated April as Alcohol Awareness Month to bring attention to the disease and let people know help is available and recovery is possible.

Up to 40 percent of all hospital beds in the U.S. (except for those being used by maternity and intensive care patients) are being used to treat health conditions that are related to alcohol consumption.

Heavy drinking can have a profound effect on older adults, whose bodies don’t metabolize alcohol as efficiently as they may have decades ago. Their increased sensitivity to alcohol may lead to falls and fractures, motor vehicle and other accidents, forgetfulness and confusion.

Excessive alcohol consumption also increases their risk for breast, liver and other cancers; immune system disorders and brain damage. It can worsen health conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes, stroke, neuropathy and cardiovascular disease and lead to emotional instability and other mental health problems such as depression.

Stress Awareness Month Sometimes stress is caused by a major event such as job loss or the death of a loved one. Sometimes it’s little everyday things that add up – problems with money, work, health, family and more.

Stress can be useful when it motivates us to take the proper course of action, to perform better or to prevent tragedy. But chronic stress can be harmful to our health.

As a result, Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and thrift stores across the country are bulging with donated items. Baby Boomers are adding to the bulk as they downsize and their children refuse to take the goods.

Tossing everything isn’t the answer as it hurts Mother Earth, so the key is to find a welcoming new home for our possessions in ways that are ecologically sound and won’t add to landfill waste.

iving Coral” is the Pantone Color Institute’s Color of the Year, defined as an “animating and life-affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone.”

Pantone 16-1546 is found naturally in our spectacular Florida sunsets, as a pop of color in our gardens, in the seashell that catches our eye. Named for the colonies of marine invertebrates that provide beauty, shelter and protection for a color-filled ecosystem, this shade evokes the plight of the fragile coral reefs struggling to survive amidst unhealthy waters.

You may have already noticed this year’s winner in new décor and furnishings, fashion, cosmetics and other products such as phones, appliances and tech devices.

To arrive at each year’s color selection, Pantone’s color experts “comb the world looking for new color influences.” World events, artists, pop culture, fashion, design, technology and the environment are all sources of inspiration.

‘Penguins’ April Film

S

teve is just an ordinary guy looking for love. When he finally meets his soul mate, they settle down and start a family. But when his lady love heads off on her own, Steve finds out just how hard being a responsible dad can be.

But wait. Steve is not a run-of-themill human dude; he’s an Antarctic penguin and the main focus of the latest Disneynature feature. Penguins opens nationwide on April 17th—just in time for Earth Day—and is the first Disneynature movie to be released in IMAX. Steve will no doubt capture the hearts of children and viewers of every

age level, hopefully opening eyes and minds to a better understanding of our increasingly fragile planet and all who inhabit it.

The film crew spent three years in Steve’s environment and endured weather conditions that included temperatures falling to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit and winds topping 150 miles an hour. Their herculean efforts have paid off, though, in a story guaranteed to charm audiences of all ages around the world.

Roy Conli is one of the three crack British nature moviemakers responsible for bringing Penguins to fruition. He says, “It’s so fun to watch Steve compete with all the other penguins to set up his nest and win his mate. It’s hard not to relate to this guy.”

Penguins is the eighth release for Disneynature, the high-quality Walt Disney Studios offshoot that has been turning out award-winning films since April of 2008. Disney himself was a pioneer in wildlife documentary

filmmaking and gave 13 True Life Adventures to the world between 1948 and 1960. Eight of them earned Academy Awards.

“Disney has an amazing platform,” says Charles Knowles, president and co-founder of the Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN). “They’re able to reach a global audience in a way that we can hardly fathom. They are uniquely positioned to tell the real story of penguins and the challenges they face. By teaming up with Disneynature—which is so strongly aligned with our own mission—we are able to uniquely communicate about the species we care so much about.”

Antarctica is one of Earth’s most remote and harshest environments, but learning about the starkly beautiful land, the surrounding oceans and the creatures that call it home is an essential part of

learning to survive on our increasingly fragile planet. “I love sharing the story of Steve,” Roy Conti concludes. “[He’s] a penguin who’s working so hard to thrive in this world and doing his part for the next generation.”

For every Penguins ticket sold between April 17th and 23rd, Disneynature will make a donation to the WCN to help protect penguins across the southern hemisphere.

Inheriting IRAs From A Spouse

O

ne thing many retirees face at some point is inheriting an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) from the death of a spouse. If you are the primary beneficiary of an IRA, there are several factors you must consider to make sure you don’t end up paying additional taxes or miss the opportunity for future tax-deferred growth.

Inherited IRA’s are subject to Required Minimum Distribution rules; age requirements can differ slightly. As the spouse and primary beneficiary of an IRA owner, you basically have two main options for the assets.

The first is to roll over the assets into a new or existing IRA in your name.

This is where inheriting the assets as a surviving spouse allows you one major benefit that non-spouse beneficiaries do not enjoy—the ability to treat those assets as if they were your own. Even if your spouse had attained age 70½, and you have not, you can delay distributions until you reach 70½, when you are required to take your own RMDs. If you don’t have an immediate need for the money, this will allow you to keep the money in a tax-deferred account as long as possible.

Normal distributions (i.e., those taken when you are over 59½) are taxed as ordinary income. Also, remember that if you are under age 59½ and need to access any of the IRA assets you inherit, you will be subject to a 10% early withdrawal penalty if you roll those assets into your own IRA and then take a distribution.

Transferring the assets to an inherited IRA may make the most sense if you are under age 59½ and need to access any of your spouse’s IRA assets. You won’t be subject to the standard premature 10% penalty when you take withdrawals from an inherited IRA before age 59½. Once you reach age 59½ or no longer need to use those assets, you can transfer the inherited assets into your own IRA. Spousal inheritors also have additional rules regarding the timing of RMDs for inherited IRAs. You can begin taking RMDs in the year after the year of death, or you can delay beginning RMDs until your spouse would have turned age 70½. This is especially beneficial if you were older than your spouse since the RMD amounts will be based on your spouse’s age. Once you reach the year that your spouse would have turned age 70½, you may also want to consider transferring the inherited assets into your own IRA. In a very small number of cases, there may be other possibilities to consider, such as disclaiming the IRA assets. Make sure you know the ramifications of each.
