ARCHITECTURE LICENSURE Upon Graduation Program at NewSchool

In 2015, NewSchool was one of the first 14 programs in the United States accepted for participation in the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) initiative.

This specialized curriculum combines all the requirements for professional architectural licensure into a single program recognized by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). IPAL fulfills the requirements for the Master of Architecture (First-Professional) degree, Architectural Experience Program (AXP) hours, and the Architect Registration Examination (ARE), therefore significantly reducing time to launch their careers as licensed architects.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: NewSchool’s IPAL program combines all of the requirements for professional licensure into a single, integrated pathway for students. The program is a 4-year graduate degree that is open for students with an undergraduate degree in architecture or another field. The program combines the degree requirements for Master of Architecture I which is a NAAB-accredited First-Professional degree, the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) hours (3,740 hours) and the opportunity to take each of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) test sections (6 sections total) before graduation. Advanced placement may be possible for applicants with a 4-year undergraduate degree in architecture.

During the first year of the program, students will take a full course load of architecture graduate degree foundation courses, including design studio, architectural history, statics, and structures as well as materials and methods. During the first summer, students will choose elective courses, including an opportunity to participate in one of our exciting study abroad programs.

Beginning in the second year, students are expected to have a part-time internship during the academic years and full-time internships during summers. The ARE tests will be taken during the second, third and fourth years – two test sections each year. The final (fourth) year of the program will consist of a full-time internship, practicum and final ARE test exams. The final year can be completed offsite and does not require residency in San Diego.

Head of the Architecture Programs Leonard Zegarski has been associated with NewSchool since 1999. During his tenure here, he has brought experience, leadership, and professionalism in and out of the classroom. As a result, he has been recognized as Teacher of the Year (2003) and also a recipient of the prestigious President’s Award (2008). Zegarski has been a licensed architect for more than three decades. In 1999, his work as a professional was honored by the San Diego Architectural Foundation by awarding Mr. Zegarski with an Orchid Award for his achievement in both Architecture and Fine Arts.

Professor, Graduate Architecture IPAL COORDINATOR Dr. Kanaani has 28 years of experience in architectural practice and was recognized by the American Institute of Architects California Council (AIACC) with the prestigious Educator Award. Mitra has served on the ARE 5.0 Development Committee of the National Council of Architecture Registration Boards (NCARB) for development of examination contents. She has also been an international evaluator with the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
