“Algorithmic radicalization” is the idea that algorithms used by large tech, and social media companies are pushing people down digital rabbit holes and studying personal internet activity. They do this in order to keep people on their platforms longer and show targeted ads, thus increasing ad revenue and interaction for them. These algorithms control what we see and when we see it, and learn from our past activities, and we slowly and subconsciously start to think like the rabbit hole that we’ve been pushed down. This idea of “Big Brother” seeing inside your head, reminded me of my time growing up in the Catholic church, when I believed that a higher power could read my thoughts and use them against me. The church’s use of uniforms in their schools and on their priests to symbolize a group mindset, inspired the idea for the silhouettes to be inspired by athletic and school uniforms. Materiality is hand embroidery, a time consuming, manual technique, to create original images inspired by stained glass windows and mosaics. This contrasts with the digital themes and concepts that I’m exploring, and pulling from other inspirations such as, AI generated Art, Surrealism, George Orwell’s “1984,” Sci-fi films and TV, uniformity, and my own personal experiences from 10 years of using Social Media platforms. I want to make a commentary on how much of a hold these addictive algorithms have on our minds, and the cult-like behavior that surrounds social media by designing a “uniform” and “stained glass windows,” for the “church of social media.”v

My thought process for this project began with trying to visualize how something as non-tangible as the internet would manifest itself in the material world. The idea for the vines an eye- flowers was inspired by surrealist art. The eye flowers and led me to the idea sketchbook page on stills of an Apple the Macintosh.

the idea of being watched of “big brother.” The the top right depicts advertisement from 1984 for

The idea of being watched led me to religion, and my own personal upbringing in it, the bottom left depicts the church I attended as a child. The right sketchbook pages depict the Vatican whos mosiacs heavily influenced my style of embroidery.

The inspiration page for the “Paid Promotions” embroidert motif.

Every look in my collection has an AI counterpart. This image of Napolean on a horse, real (left), AI generated (right), inspired me to take the more traditional embroidery motifs an images that I created and make abstract versions inspired by AI generated images and art. This also reflects the distortion of information and images on the internet for facts to fit personal narritives. The bottom pages depict my idea of uniformity. My silhouettes are heavily inspired by spending 15 years on a figure skating team, made with textiles like silk moire, that are commonly seen in papal attire.

Embroidery Preparation This group of original digital drawings are inspired by my own experiences during my time on social media and by biblical stories and roman catholic imagery, these images will serve as the basis for the embroidery motifs that go on the final garments. The image on the far left 1)”Privacy Policy,” is based loosely on myself, interacting with content, and having my movements watched by the social media platforms I use to better advertise to me. (2) “Paid Promotions,” is inspired by a social media inuencer advertising an unhealthy weight loss product. Large inuencers such as Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian have both advertised unhealthy weight loss teas. The center The right image (3) “The Comments Section,” is two men ghting with their phones in their hands and is inspired by the concept of conrmation bias and what I see in comments sections. The motif on the top right (4)”Censorship,” is of fig leaves which were used for censorship by the Catholic Church, when they took power in Europe and started to associate nudity with Paganism. This reminded me of the heavy censorship of nudity on social media.

Samples This sample is 17” x 22” using a tambour hook to attatch glass seed beads to fabric to create the body, and fabric gathering with a tambour hook to create the background. The “eye fowers” are made using thread and wire to create a three dimensional bead. This sample is made out of a mix of different and non conventional materials such as scrap leather, eating utensils and doll clothing. The goal of this piece is to be the “AI generated” version of the traditionally beaded piece.

The glitching leaves are inspired by censorship by the Catholic Church, and censoship on social media. I wanted to combine the concept of the two, so I added the glitch and pixilation effect by incorporating larger beads and different colors as well.
