l a i c n a F in Aid A variety of sources of financial assistance are available to you, including federal grants, loans, and work programs; state grants and loans; and New School institutional scholarships and grants. When applying for aid, remember that university costs include tuition, fees, housing, and other expenses like books, supplies, and transportation. The actual amounts spent on these items will vary depending on your program of study, enrollment status, and living expenses. Keep in mind that The New School offers extended payment plan options. For more information about the cost of attendance and financial services, visit www.newschool.edu/studentservices/ financialaid.

Federal Financial Aid / Every student who meets federal eligibility requirements can apply for aid, regardless of family income. For more information on eligibility requirements, visit www.newschool.edu/fafsa. Students applying for federal aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Office of Student Financial Services uses data from the FAFSA to review requests for some forms of aid from The New School as well. More information on the FAFSA can be found on our website at www.newschool.edu/financial-aid. Students must apply for federal aid each year by filing the FAFSA and the Office of Student Financial Services strongly encourages students to do so by March 1, the priority filing deadline for continuing students and those admitted for the fall. November 1 is the deadline for new students admitted for the spring. For more information, visit www.newschool.edu/aid-deadlines. Federal aid–eligible students should complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov (the school code is 002780). You can either submit your application online using a personal identification number (a PIN can be obtained at www.pin.ed.gov) as a signature or sign a hard-copy confirmation page and mail it to the processing center. Three to four weeks are required for processing, so complete the application as soon as possible after January 1 of the reward year. Review the processed Student Aid Report once you receive it and confirm that all the information entered is correct; follow all instructions to resolve any outstanding issues. Need-based aid is determined solely on the basis of families’ documented financial situation. Student Financial Services determines aid using the previous year’s income as reported on the FAFSA. (International students do not qualify for need-based aid.) Merit-based aid is almost always tied to academic and artistic performance. Both international students and domestic students are considered for merit-based scholarships as part of the admission process.

New School Institutional Funds / The New School establishes substantial funding for institutional scholarships, fellowships, grants, and stipends under its institutional aid program. The Office of Student Financial Services uses the information reported on your FAFSA to award need-based institutional scholarships. In late February of each year, Student Financial Services begins processing aid packages for newly admitted fall students. International Students / International students are not eligible for U.S. federal assistance but may be eligible to borrow through private credit-based education loan programs. For more information on non–New School sources of financial support for international students, visit www.newschool.edu/aid-for-internationals. Extended Payment Plans and Electronic Services / The New School offers a monthly payment plan, which allows families to pay for tuition, fees, and campus housing over the course of a term rather than in one lump sum at the beginning of the term. The university also provides electronic student account services such as electronic invoices and direct deposit to student accounts of financial aid funds in excess of charges and allows students to designate authorized account users (such as parents).
