Venture out

Holidays

If you are looking for ways to feed your holiday spirit in Sacramento, don’t fret ‘cause you’re only steps away from a local winter wonderland. Old Sacramento

Known for signature shops and its old time feel, Old Sacramento is a great place to eat, shop and wander about the boardwalk streets. Get in the holiday spirit and snatch up this year’s ornaments, decorations, gifts and lights galore at the Christmas & Company specialty holiday store. Grab a gift for the chef in your family at its sister store, Chef’s Mercantile. Experience Sacramento’s sinful history by reserving your spot on a Speakeasy Tour & Pub Crawl. Learn how Sactown became known as one of the ‘wettest cities in the union’ during prohibition. Visit DowntownSac. org/Tours to make reservations. Mustaches, magic tricks, flamingos and mullets – Evangeline’s has specialized in gifts of all kinds since 1974. Find wacky gifts perfect for that holiday white elephant gift exchange.

All in the Family

Whether your kids are big or small, Downtown has things to enjoy for all. The Westfield Downtown Ice Rink is big city holiday skating in our own backyard. Open seven days a week through January 16, the ice rink on 7th and K streets is a great way to pass on old family traditions and create new memories.

The symphony of lights, sounds and visual effects that make up the Theatre of Lights, will take the audience back to a time when ’Twas the Night Before Christmas was first introduced in Sacramento in 1857. (Thursday – Sunday beginning November 23) After a family dinner at Cafeteria 15L, take the kids to see The Polar Express on the Esquire IMAX big screen in December. Relive the magical story of the round trip journey to the North Pole. Photo by Sarah maren photographers

for the

Esquire IMAX The holidays aren’t complete without the Sacramento Ballet’s presentation of The Nutcracker. Follow Clara’s magical journey through the sparkling Snowflake Forest and be awed by the elegance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Tasty Touring

Tired of those cookie cutter chains in the ‘burbs? Downtown is full of unique and locally owned eateries that tickle the tastebuds.

Warm your soul on a cold winter day with a lavish cup of coffee at Downtown’s newest joint Broadacre Coffee. From lavender lattés to fresh pour over cups o’ java, it’ll warm you up any way you like. Hungry after a morning at the ice rink? Brunch is a popular ritual for weekend warriors downtown. Try these unconventional options like Capitol Garage (rated Top 50 Brunch in the country by Open Table!), Fox & Goose and Pizza Rock. From olalla berry scones to warm breakfast pizzas, this isn’t your run of the mill brunch. Trying to track down one of Sacramento’s many gourmet food trucks? Swing by the Westfield Downtown Ice Rink where each week a new food truck will be keeping the masses full and happy. If you are into locally grown and seasonal food there are a handful of amazing seasonal eateries including The Grange at the Citizen hotel, The Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento, and Restaurant Thir13en. Their menus change often depending on what is fresh and in season, boasting big flavors derived from fresh ingredients.

poured pint of Guinness at de Vere’s Irish Pub or sip on their wide selection of whiskey. Wander into Fanny Ann’s Saloon where they have been serving Old Sacramento’s visitors beer since 1972. Stumble over to the Backdoor Lounge. They have been mixing up traditional cocktails in Old Sac for 43 years.

Wild Things

Downtown is the central hub for Sacramento nightlife, alive with a diverse mix of bars, pubs and clubs. In search of sophistication? District 30, Social, The Park and MIX Downtown are places to see and be seen. Each venue is a hop, skip and a jump from each other and host a slew of holiday events featuring top area DJs. More of a rocker at heart? Take a walk to Marilyn’s on K and sing your heart out at live band karaoke every Thursday night. When you’re planning your ugly sweater pub-crawl, make a pit stop by these classic pubs that offer a warm atmosphere with a stiff drink. You can knock back a properly

Tequila Museo Mayahuel

Artesian cocktails are the current trend in libations. Stop by Tequila Museo Mayahuel where they specialize in top shelf margaritas, house made sangria and mojitos. Ella’s Dining Room & Bar infuses flavors of the season into their handcrafted Gold Rush cocktail: a mix of bourbon, PX sherry, lemon, honey syrup and bitters.

Local Finds It’s always better to give than receive. (Or so they say.) Either way, you’ll find a little something for everyone on your list this holiday season in one of Downtown and Old Sacramento’s locally owned shops. So give a little boost to the local economy this season when you’re spreading the holiday cheer. Pass go and collect Free Parking Street parking at the meters in Downtown and Old Sacramento is free on weekdays after 4:30 pm and all day on Saturday and Sunday starting November 25 through December 25 (Keep in mind that parking time limits are still in effect). If you’d rather park in a garage, hit up one of the Downtown Plaza’s three garages. You can validate your parking as you shop.

Short y P.Q.’s Keeping it fun and flirty, Shorty P.Q.’s opened earlier this year in Old Sacramento. The women’s boutique features fashion forward pieces and several local clothing and jewelry lines. (Insider’s tip: Old Sacramento is a gold mine for locally owned women’s boutiques, so put on some wedges and explore.) 1015 2nd Street shortypq.com @shortypq

Vintage YSJ This boutique on 12th and J streets is a vintage treasure chest. They have a killer collection for the ladies with a penchant for feminine 40s and 50s pieces, as well as boho chic and rocker glam looks. Their selection turns over quickly, so if it catches your eye you better grab it fast (Insiders tip: They’re all over twitter and they’ve got an online store so you can keep an eye out for any fab finds.) 924 12th Street vintageysj.com @vintageYSJ

Mike’s Bikes This Downtown shop is not only a mecca for local cyclists, it’s Northern California’s biggest bike shop. They’ve got over 450 bikes in stock and all the gear and accessories you could need to get ready to ride. The best part is their team is uber helpful so you don’t need to be a hard core cyclist to appreciate the goods (Insider’s tip: They do bike tune-ups and repairs. They even host free maintenance clinics on Wednesday nights.) 1411 I Street mikesbikes.com @mikesbikes

ZuhG. Life Wanna shop local and support local talent? This independent music store in the Westfield Downtown Plaza only stocks local albums and apparel by local musicians and artists. The store is owned by local musician Bryan Nichols of the reggae band ZuhG. (Insider’s tip: The store also doubles as a studio for music lessons.) Downtown Plaza, Level 2

de Vere’s Irish Pub Give a gift that keeps on giving all year round. A Whiskey Society membership at de Vere’s. You get discounted flights every 2nd and 4th Tuesday and “You Call It” whiskey nights every 1st and 3rd Tuesdays (Insider’s tip: Sure it’s a phenomenal pub, but did you know they serve up some serious grub too? N.T.S. – Not too shabby.) 1521 L Street deverespub.com @deverespub

SHORTY P.Q.’S Rowena & Tak ashi Salon Step into the sleek and modern interiors of Downtown’s newest salon, and you’ll feel like you’ve been swept away into some chic urban oasis in NYC. It’s the only salon in Sacramento to appoint a Vidal Sassoon Academy senior instructor as a resident educator (Insider’s Tip: The TakaraBelmont shampoo bed in owner Rowena Hiraga’s private studio is an amazing spalike experience that’s part shampoo, part aromatherapy acupressure massage.) 1020 12th Street #112 rowenaandtakashi.com

Tango by the River Tear up the dance floor, or at least learn the basics, at this dance studio in Old Sacramento. The Friday night “Class to Floor” tango class is a great crash course in this Argentine art. You’ll get a chance to learn the basics and then put it together as you hit the dance floor at the weekly Practilonga following each class (Insider’s

Tip: Founder Donna Williams chose Old Sacramento for the studio’s home because the 19th century buildings evoke the vibe of Old Buenos Aires.) 128 J Street rivertango.com

Local Roots Food Tours Eat. Walk. Talk. Repeat. Foodies will swoon over these 3-hour guided tours through culinary hot spots in Downtown and beyond. You’ll meet chefs and shop owners as you nosh on some good eats. Each tour includes food and beverage tastings (Insider’s tip: Follow founder Lisa Armstrong on Twitter to get the latest dish.) local-food-tours.com @LocalRootsFood

Old Town Christmas Old Sacramento is a wealth of holiday activities in November and December. Family traditions like the Theatre of Lights are mainstays, but there are plenty of happenings for ‘kids’ of all ages. Perhaps the “Sing a few bars” caroling pub crawl or New Years Eve Hornblower Cruise is more up your alley!

will let ‘er rip and light up that big beautiful tree. After you’ve ooohed and ahhhed at the glowing boughs, all you’ll have to do is turn around for the premiere presentation of Theatre of Lights.

Sing a Few Bars Select weekends in December A few cocktails and singing go together, well, like bars and karaoke. So it was only natural to combine the old timey tradition of Christmas caroling with the new timey tradition of the Christmas pub crawl. The Old Sacramento bars got together and decided it was time for the first ever Christmas Caroling Pub Crawl: Sing a Few Bars. Grab a tasty drink special from the restaurants, bars and clubs in old town and enjoy an evening of Silent Night slowly giving way to Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. For more information visit OldSacramento.com

Holiday Lighted Boat Par ade

November 23-December 31 K & Front Streets Not many events can bring a magical “Disney” feel to Old Sacramento quite as much as this third annual holiday event. Theatre of Lights brings to life the holiday favorite ’Twas the Night Before Christmas on the rooftops of Old Sacramento. Each Thursday through Sunday between Thanksgiving and Christmas on the corner of K and Front streets, this spectacular display of holiday lights and sounds really creates a WOW factor. The best part? It’s absolutely free. Bring everyone you know! Opening night, 6:45 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23.

December 3 Front Street Get out your favorite scarf, grab a hot cocoa and cuddle up with your honey, family and friends along the Sacramento River. The Sacramento Yacht Club is getting their vessels all dolled up for the holidays. They make Sacramento’s waterfront into the perfect place to watch this electric floating parade. Another free holiday event that is entertaining for any group, big or small, young or old.

Sacr amento Cit y Christmas Tree Lighting Wednesday, November 23, 5:30-7 p.m. K & Front Streets Kick off the holiday season the day before Thanksgiving at the lighting of Sacramento’s 50-foot Christmas Tree. Musical fun will start at 5:30 p.m. to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. At 6:30 p.m. city dignitaries

Hornblower Christmas & New Year’s Eve Cruises December 31, 6:45 p.m., 10:45 p.m. Hornblower Cruises and Events Tired of the same ol’ same ol’ for NYE? Don’t spend another year crammed into an overcrowded club or falling asleep by 11:45 p.m. on your couch anticipating the ball drop. For a refreshingly different way to usher in the New Year, celebrate 2012 on a yacht on the Sacramento River. On the Hornblower’s midnight cruise you get a front

row, waterfront seat for the fireworks over the Tower Bridge at the stroke of midnight.

Bring the kiddos out early for entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. at Waterfront Park.

A Gingerbread Holiday

“It’s a Wonderful Life or ‘Winging in the Holidays’”

The schoolhouse museum will have an array of gingerbread cabins, shacks, mansions, buildings, and other structures all made out of the season’s favorite cookie dough. New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacul ar

November 24-Dec 23 Sacra-Melo on The Delta King Step aboard Sacramento’s historic Delta King for a comical retelling of the Frank Capra’s holiday classic. December 31, 9 p.m. & January 1, 12 a.m. Tower Bridge You can’t have New Years Eve without fireworks to start the celebrations off right. Sacramento’s heritage fireworks display lights up over the Tower Bridge and Sacramento River at 9 p.m. and midnight.
