e are happy to report that all of our events from last year were well attended and will return this year! Kids’ Day on the Farm, Thursday, November 3rd is already full with over 600 third-graders signed up to attend and learn how food gets to their plate!

Saturday, November 5th we’ll be at Bidwell Mansion for the ever growing Farm City Harvest Festival, hosting lots of interactive agricultural activities for the whole family.

Later that evening November 5th, we’ll be cohosting, along with the Butte County Young Farmers and Ranchers, the Farm City Dinner Dance combined with the Annual Awards Reception. The always popular Agribusiness Bus Tour has some interesting and fun stops planned for November 9th. The Farm City Restaurant Program has eight restaurants participating this year, celebrating and featuring our local commodities. Please visit them throughout the month of November.

The FCC Committee would like to thank you for joining us to celebrate the importance of agriculture! Each year it becomes more essential for us in agriculture to communicate to the consumer what it takes to put safe, abundant, affordable, and diverse food on our plates and in our lunch pails. Because we live in Northern California our farmers are able to produce a wide variety of products for our consumption but resources and regulations are ever more difficult to manage while providing food and fiber for all. Water, labor, land, transportation, disease and pest control are all necessary elements to food and fiber production. A Farm City goal is to increase understanding of agriculture’s need for and careful use of these important elements, thus strengthening the relationship between farming and the urban community through agricultural awareness.

The Farm City Celebration is a collaborative effort by many organizations, businesses and individuals who value agriculture and above all want to promote a positive relationship between members of the agricultural and urban communities.

We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who have supported the Farm City Celebration this year and for nearly four decades. With your financial support, we are

able to bring together farmers, ranchers and consumers to foster a deeper understanding of the issues between farm and city.

Our Farm City Celebration originated in 1979 when the local chapter of California Women for Agriculture did a “tasting” of local products inside a bank in Chico. The Butte County Cattlewomen were the first to partner with CWA to help staff the tastings.

The events this year are made possible through all the partners involved including CWA, Butte County Farm Bureau, Butte County Ag Commissioner, UC Cooperative Extension, Butte County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, CSU Chico and Butte College Agriculture programs, Butte County Young Farmers & Ranchers and countless volunteers.

Kid’s Day at the Farm

Thursday, November 3rd PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED California State University, Chico University Farm, Hegan Lane, Chico Local 3rd graders rotate through eight stations, learning about different areas of agriculture in a fun interactive way.

The students learn about many of our top crops, including rice, beef, almonds and walnuts. They’ll learn all the ag products that are needed to make a pizza, then they get a sample piece of pizza. Farm City Celebration Agri-Business Bus Tour

Wednesday, November 9th CSU, Chico University Farm, 311 Nicholas C. Schouten Lane (off Hegan Lane), Chico 7:30 am Cost: $40 Tour Buses will depart from the CSUC Farm starting at 7:30 a.m. and will return at approximately 12:00 noon for a fabulous lunch featuring the now-famous barrel chicken prepared by local farmers, plus Farm City rice, salad, rolls and lunch-time entertainment.

The tour will visit the Glenn Colusa Irrigation District to learn more about their water diversion and drought impacts, the Goedhart Dairy operation, Riverwest Processing, Inc. (an almond processor), American Almond Orchards, Inc. & Lake Ranch Pistachio (a pistachio production operation), and the Sunsweet prune dryer in Orland.

Harvest Fest

Saturday, Nov. 5th, 10 am Bidwell Mansion State Historic

T

he Harvest Festival is a FREE for the whole family, rain or shine event with fun, agricultural related hands on activities, food and lots more. We are bringing the farm experience to the city for this community agriculture day. You’ll see tractors on display, 4-H, cattle roping, cow milking, bees, Boy Scout rope bridge and so much more.

We are so fortunate to present the Harvest Festival on the grounds of the Historic Bidwell Mansion. During the event, visitors can browse through the first floor of the Bidwell Mansion! Staff and volunteers will be there to answer questions. The Visitor Center will be open including “The General’s Store” gift shop, exhibit hall and bathrooms. View the Carriage House, displaying historic carriages and wagons.

The Festival is your opportunity to interact with farm animals. Area 4-H Club members will present an interactive animal display; pet bunnies, chickens, sheep, goats and more. Milk “Buttercup” the cow provided

by California Women for Agriculture. Taste crisp fall apples from Noble Orchards and learn how to make homemade applesauce. See first-hand rice milling from Sac Valley Rice Company.

Kids of all ages will have fun on the two rope bridges built by Boy Scouts Troop 2 in front of the mansion. Butte County Cattlewomen will have an interactive roping demonstration for your little cowboy or cowgirl! TJ Farms Carriage Company will provide rides for a special event price.

There’s arts & crafts, wool spinning, many fun activities, and so much more at this year’s Festival.

The 2016 Farm City Celebration Restaurant Program is cookin’ all through November

he Farm City Celebration’s Restaurant Program is back highlighting local eateries in our community that are committed to supporting local agriculture. Farm City Celebration aims to increase an understanding of agriculture’s immense value to the urban community, and to show its importance to all who live in Chico, as well as the surrounding communities.

We are so fortunate to have a diversity of crops ranging from almonds, rice, walnuts, olives and stone fruits such as peaches, apricots and plums, to a large variety of fresh vegetables, local meats, cheeses and wines. Restaurants and cafés are an important market sector for farmers who sell their

products locally. During this year’s celebration, you can visit the restaurants listed below to find a variety of dishes prepared with farm-fresh products grown right here in the North Valley. All of these restaurants have a commitment to sourcing locally when possible to support local farmers and at the same time turning our region’s agricultural offerings into culinary delights.
