WELCOME TO THE CHICO NEWS & REVIEW’S

30,000 sq.ft. Of TrEaSurES!

2013 WINNERS’ ISSUE

T

he Chico News & Review has hosted the Best of Chico contest for 29 years, thanks to the experts—our readers—having strong opinions on what’s “best” about our community. We want to thank everyone who voted and helped make this year’s contest such a success. Your votes counted in giving recognition to the hardworking businesspeople and community members who were recognized in one of the CN&R’s most popular issues of the year. Those who took top honors in Best of Chico were invited to a disco-themed celebration at the Chico Women’s Club. That party was a blast. We’d like to thank our volunteer bartenders from Butte Humane Society, along with several amazing contributing business partners: New Clairvaux Vineyard, Bacio Catering & Carry Out, Shubert’s Ice Cream & Candy, and Passion for Life Photography. Thanks also go out to the CN&R sales staff, Arts Editor Jason Cassidy, Advertising Services Coordinator Ruth Alderson, and receptionist Kendra Gray. Last but not least, we have to give a shout out to the winners who came to the party and boogied down with us, especially those who went full ’70s. You all are the grooviest! This special Winners’ Issue is a follow-up to our Best of Chico issue, and it gives us a chance to highlight the first-place winners in each of the categories, and also to honor the runners-up. Congratulations, again!

Spotlight on the 2013 Winners! BEST OF CHICO SIN OF CORTEZ 2290 Esplanade, 879-9200

1ST PLACE: BEST BREAKFAST

No surprise that Sin of Cortez won for Best Breakfast again this year, since its selection of specialty scrambles, fruit-filled pancakes, seasoned potatoes and excellent coffee easily separates this popular eatery from the rest of the pack. Plus, the staff is always fast and friendly. Late-risers, don’t worry: Breakfast is served until 2 p.m.

CHICO PAPER CO. 345 Broadway, Chico, 891-0900

1ST PLACE: BEST PLACE TO BUY ART 3RD PLACE: BEST PLACE TO SEE ART

Chico Paper Company’s owners, Greg and Jana Strong share their thoughts about the gallery’s Living Legend status. “It’s really all about our customers, our staff, and the artists we represent. We would like to give a huge thank you to our loyal clientele for their support and dedication to the arts. With this encouragement, we are able to show the best local artists producing exciting, varied and unique works of art." The art gallery represents over 38 local and regional artists. 1ST PLACE: BEST LOCAL RESTAURANT 1ST PLACE: BEST FINE DINING 2ND PLACE: BEST DATE-NIGHT DINING 3RD PLACE: BEST MARTINI 3RD PLACE (TIE): BEST PLACE TO SPEND YOUR BIRTHDAY

Voted Best Local Restaurant in Chico again this year, 5th Street Steakhouse is best known for its juicy steaks, ranging from the six-ounce filet mignon to the 22-ounce Delmonico ribeye. But it also features other delicious offerings, such as hazelnut-crusted halibut and fettuccini Alfredo, as well as a “Whole Body Fit” nutritionally designed two-course dinner. There’s a full bar, too, in this upscale restaurant that has Chicoans coming back for more, especially when choosing where to dine for special occasions.

THE HANDLE BAR

2070 E. 20th St., Ste. 160, 894-2337

1ST PLACE: BEST WATERING HOLE FOR TOWNIES

A beer bar in Chico? Seems like a no-brainer, so it’s no wonder The Handle Bar, which specializes in specialty and craft beers, has won the Best Watering Hole award. Stop in for a pint of something delicious. If you’re no beer aficionado, ask one of the extremely knowledgeable staff members to recommend something!-or try a few for yourself by ordering a “flight.” Also on tap is a small, well thought out wine list, a growing selection of hard to find bottled beers and a decent-sized menu of bar foods to munch on while getting your drink on.

CELESTINO’S LIVE FROM NEW YORK PIZZA & DELI 101 Salem St., 896-1234 and 1354 East Ave., 345-7700

1ST PLACE: BEST PIZZA

The boys from Jersey opened Celestino’s in 1997. Real N.Y.-style pizza has earned them the CN&R Best of Chico award for best pizza year after year. Made with only the finest ingredients to ensure a tasty consistent pizza. Hand tossed and baked to perfection makes Celestino’s a favorite with students and budget-conscious downtown patrons. “It’s the thin crust, homemade sauce and fresh cheese that makes the pizza so good” says Celestino. “If it’s not a great cheese pizza to start, any topping you put on it won’t make it better” chimes in Enzo. Pick it up, fold it, and eat it…that’s the N.Y. way. Other favorites are fresh salads, hot sandwiches and homemade lasagna. “We love our customers, they are the secret of our success” Celestino says. Providing them with superior quality and good service brings them back again and again. Thank you Chico for giving a couple of Jersey boys the opportunity to live and work in a great town. Open every day from 10:30am to 10pm., downtown across from the Bear.

2051 Robinson St., 533-1488 Tong Fong Low, which celebrated its centennial last year, takes the top prize again this year. Diners rave about the 10 restaurant’s chop suey (the restaurant, incidentally, was originally called Charlie’s Chop Suey), as well as its yummy Cantonese items and spicy Szechuan dishes. It was Tong Fong Low’s success in Oroville, in fact, that led it to open up a second location, in Chico, which is also very popular, as its win for Best Asian Cuisine this year attests to.

being voted a Cn&r “best of ChiCo” winner is a great honor because i was born and raised here in Chico. as a small family owned business we want to help the community in which we live and work. to help our environment we offer the best bag discount in town. bring in your own bags, that will hold more than 5 items, and we will give you a $.25 bag credit. we would also like to thank the members of the community for helping us raise over $12,000 so far this year for local non profits. our “last thursday of the month” wine tasting has helped numerous local non profits raise much needed funds in these tough economic times. this could not happen without your continued support. this community and the environment in which we raise our children are both near and dear to my heart. i will continue to operate Chico grocery outlet in a sustainable, helpful manner.
