Some tips offered on paddleboarding

The Country Store in Eagle River offers nostalgic and homemade candies, chocolates and ice cream. They have won

For many years, stopping in at Country Store in downtown Eagle River has been a tradition of many families. Dick and Debbie Preuhs thank all their loyal customers for their support as they continue in their 29th summer as owners.

A commitment to quality is one of the reasons Country Store has won awards for its chocolate walnut fudge, caramel corn and cashew snappers.

Though fudge and turtles are customer favorites, there are many other great candies and chocolates available. Toffee, almond bark and chocolate pretzels also are popular.

One of the largest selections of sugar-free chocolates is available for those with special dietary needs.

Continuing to be popular this year, cinnamontoasted almonds, pecans and cashews are made right at the store.

Country Store has expanded its line of saltwater taffy and has many fun-filled types of candy. It also stocks nostalgic brands of candy for the child in everyone.

After customers purchase their candy, they can

cool down with a refreshing ice-cream cone, sundae, malt or soda.

Customers have more than 24 flavors to choose from, and can get a chocolate-dipped cone or a chocolate-sprinkled cone. Children can enjoy a special treat of sitting at the store’s “children only” table.

In fall, it’s time to begin the caramel apple season.

“As customers anticipate the first apple of the season, they often remind us they are the best caramel apples they have ever tasted,” said owner Debbie Preuhs.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Bureau of Law Enforcement recently issued a special edition of a Warden Wire feature dealing with paddleboard use.

The edition takes on the format of frequently asked questions. These questions were taken by wardens on the beat and the DNR call center, which is staffed daily, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 1-(888) 936-7463.

Question 1: I am going to try paddleboarding in a couple of weeks on a Wisconsin trip with friends. Is it true I need a life jacket when I paddleboard?

Answer: Yes, paddleboards are considered boats. The law states you do need to have a life jacket with you when you enjoy the stand-up paddleboards.

Make sure you pack a life jacket or rent one before you hit the water. The DNR wants you to have fun — and to be safe — while you are paddleboarding.

Question 2: Why do I need a life jacket? It’s not like it’s a canoe. It’s just a floating board.

Answer: Knowing that more than 90% of boat fatalities related to drowning involve victims not wearing life jackets, you need one for your safety. You also need one because Wisconsin law, as well as U.S. Coast Guard law, treats paddleboards the same as kayaks and canoes.

This means there must be a personal flotation device (PFD) for each person on board. However, the best way to obey this law and to ensure your safety is to just wear the life jacket.

Question 3: Paddleboards look like fun, but since I've never done it before, I’m wondering what other tips the wardens recommend for novice paddleboarders like me?

Answer: The tips are the same for a novice like you and anyone who is experienced. Those tips from the DNR conservation wardens are these: Stay within

The U.S. Coast Guard also offers these tips for paddleboarders: Be a competent swimmer, know how to self-rescue, know how to tow another board, know the local regulations and navigation rules, understand the elements and hazards, know when to wear a leash, and take a safety course.

Question 4: The last tip says take a safety course.

Answer: The Wisconsin DNR offers a free online paddling safety course for new paddlers to learn the basics and as a great refresher for experienced paddlers. The course does not certify a person to operate a motorboat but is a great learning tool.

Northwoods Art Tour set The Northwoods Art Tour will be held Friday through Sunday, July 2628, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout Vilas, Oneida, Lincoln, Langlade and Iron counties.

More than 30 artists will open the doors of their studios and galleries for self-guided tours. A diverse variety of original work will be on display to view and purchase directly from regional painters, potters, photographers, furniture makers, book binders, woodcarvers, jewelers, and glass and fiber artists.

“This is the 14th year the Northwoods Art Tour

artists have issued their special invitation to the public,” said an event organizer Arlene Bozicnik.

What makes a great-tasting pizza every time?

What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics.

Art Impresions set July 25 The Land O’ Lakes Chamber of Commerce will host Art Impressions 2013 under the pines on the Land O’ Lakes Town Hall grounds this Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

Big Sand Lake Golf Course in Phelps offers a peaceful but challenging course for golfers of all ability levels. The course

is one of the oldest in northern Wisconsin. It’s located seven miles east of Phelps.

Challenging golf course found at Big Sand Lake Overlooking Smoky Lake, Big Sand Lake Golf Course in Phelps is one of the oldest golf courses in northern Wisconsin. According to superintendent Jim Burton, it’s one of the most peaceful, yet challenging courses in the area.

Big Sand Lake Golf Course was founded in 1928 by the Eagle River Fish and Game Club. The clubhouse building was originally a horse barn, donated to the golf club by Charles V. Barrett Sr. in

1930. The barn was moved to its current location and remodeled. Today, the course is cared for by Burton, who has managed the course for many years.

The course is relatively flat and has no water, but according to golf course staff, it is far from easy.

Sand traps, small greens, hole positions, doglegs and trees make the course challenging enough to keep players of all abilities on top of their game.

Vacationers and local

residents from the surrounding communities of Eagle River, Land O’ Lakes and Iron River, Mich., come to test their skills at Big Sand Lake.

To traverse this 3,085yard, par-36 course, golf carts and pull carts are available for rent. Rates are $2.50 for pull carts and $15 for motor carts. Golf clubs are available for rent.

Snacks, soda and beer are offered to golfers in the clubhouse. The course is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

No tee times are required.

Nine holes cost $15 on weekdays and $18 Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Twilight rates are featured after 4:30 every day. Twilight golf is $11 weekdays and $14 Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Grandma’s Toy Box home to games, puzzles “I chose the name ‘Grandma’s Toy Box’ because I wanted to offer lots of the classic toys like those someone might find if they opened their own grandmother’s toy box,” said store owner Kathy Holperin.

Faerie Festival slated in Three Lakes July 27 The fifth annual Woodland Enchantment Faerie Festival will be held Saturday, July 27, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Enchanted Garden in Three Lakes is located at 7434 Halverson Road.

The unique event is a fusion of whimsy and art which combines costume, live music, dance and crafts.

More than 400 costumed faeries, sprites and other festively attired partici-

pants are expected to join in the creativity, which ranges from live music by the Fiddlers Four to interactive hooping and Zumba. A tea party with the faeries and a pageant is also on the schedule.

Participants will be able to make miniature faerie gardens, paint rocks or shop faerie vendors. Face painting will return, along with maypole and ribbon dancing.

There also will be a scavenger hunt in the Enchanted Garden.

Everyone will be welcome to join in the faerie parade, which will be complete with floats. A special children’s stage will give youths a chance to try out their performing skills.

The Three Lakes eighthgrade class will sell sweet treats to raise money for their upcoming class trip.

The drama club also will grill food to raise money to support their activities.

Tickets are available at Three Lakes BMO Bank for $8 apiece. Sunday, July 28, will serve as the event’s rain date.

That’s why Vilas County’s Tourism & Publicity Department aims to make sure visitors know about all the ways they can stay active when they visit, according to Executive Director Cindy Burzinski.

“We work hard to provide travelers with resources for all our recreational offerings,” she said. “For example, in our visitor guide, you can find maps of more than 50 trails in Vilas County.”

Vilas County offers miles and miles of great cycling routes, and the county’s 12 communities have worked together to enhance and promote these unique trails, including the Heart of Vilas County Hike & Bike Trail, a 23-mile paved trail that loops through Boulder Junction, Sayner/Star Lake and St. Germain.

Local communities and groups have worked hard to develop individual and connected trail segments and, along with Vilas County Tourism & Publicity, promote the trails as a shared asset throughout the county.

There are also plenty of recreational opportunities for those who want to explore the area’s lakes and rivers, and the county has just launched the On the Water in Vilas County Sweepstakes to draw attention to those opportunities.

Environmental education, nature programs offered at Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River Unbiased information about Wisconsin’s natural resources and environmental issues is often hard to find. But not at Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River.

“Our entire staff is dedicated to delivering balanced, objective information on the management and use of trees, forests and other natural resources,” said Maggie Bishop, executive director of the accredited nonprofit natural resources specialty school.

That, in fact, is the school’s mission. And, since 1944, Trees For Tomorrow has reached more than 200,000 elementary, high school and college students from throughout the Great Lakes region, and adults from all over the nation.

“We promise ‘A Natural Resources Education Experience that Lasts a Lifetime!’ It’s not uncommon for us to hear from former students who say their

time at Trees changed their lives,” Bishop said.

Groups of students come to the Trees For Tomorrow campus and stay for workshops that last from two days to a week. Students spend much of their time outdoors participating in hands-on activities that help them learn about Wisconsin’s natural resources.

In the winter, they learn to ski and snowshoe. In warmer months, they explore the outdoors on foot or in canoes. All the while, they learn about ecology, forest management, water resources, soils, wildlife and other environmental topics.

“The best part about being on the Trees For Tomorrow trip was definitely getting the opportunity to experience nature firsthand,” a West Salem High School student wrote recently. “It is one thing sitting in a biology or ecology class learning about all of

these amazing things in our world, but getting out there and actually seeing and doing them is a great privilege. In a world where many teenagers are consumed by ‘screen time’ whether that be a computer, TV or some other electronic, it seems as if we do not get a chance to experience it enough.”

Placing the students in direct contact with the resources that support human needs helps them gain the knowledge and skills that help them make responsible lifestyle choices, Bishop said. Trees For Tomorrow also offers classes for teachers and adults (including snowshoe building and nature photography) through the Road Scholars program.

Throughout the summer, the school offers free public programs on Tuesday evenings, family pro-

grams on Tuesday mornings and Youth Outdoor Adventure Series day camp for youth ages 8-12 on Thursdays. Annual public events include Spring Celebration on the second Saturday in April and Forest Fest — a celebration of all that the forest has to offer — on the first Saturday in August.

Joe Bucher Blues Fest planned in St. Germain The 15th annual Joe Bucher Blues Fest is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, at the St. Germain pavilion.

This year’s blues fest will begin at 3 p.m. and will run until 10 p.m. Tickets cost $13 in advance and are available at several outlets, including Trig’s and WRJO Radio. They will cost $15 at the door and $10 for youths 16 and younger.

The Joe Bucher Blues Fest will feature blues music and a smoked barbecue dinner. Guests will get an authentic taste of Memphis smoked ribs, butts, sausage, roasted corn and baked beans.

“We also kick it up a notch by including hourly raffles and a silent auction,” said Joe Bucher.

Classic Wooden Boat Show planned on Lake Minocqua The appeal of wooden boats that once cruised the resort lakes of the North Woods is on display the weekend of July 26-28, when the 21st annual Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show docks on Lake Minocqua, downtown Minocqua. Headquarters will be The Boathouse.

There will be a parade of boats Friday night.

Hours are Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The boats have been meticulously restored with the larger ones valued at well more than $100,000.

Mahogany hulls gleam with loving care, polished brass reflect the rays of the sun and blue water, and motors rumble with authority. Bret & Frisk will play 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Expected are more than 50 antique, classic and wooden boats that range from utilities to luxury cruisers such as Chris Craft, Gar Wood and Century, which will be berthed at the extensive and remodeled piers of The Boathouse. Some fiberglass boats from the era when they were first introduced will also be there.

The captains will parade their boats at 6:45 p.m. Friday before the crowd gathered for that evening’s Min-Aqua Bats Water-ski Show. The next two days the boats will tie up at The Boathouse docks.

A few canoes, smaller craft and woody cars will be on the grassy area and street. The owners will be available to discuss the lines and heritage of their boats. Throughout the day you can see them cruising the Minocqua Chain of Lakes. Due to liability concerns, there are no rides for the public.

Concessions will be available both days on the docks to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Admission to the boat show is free, but donations are welcome.

The first shop was established in Camp’s SuperValu in July of 2009 and has been a local favorite ever since. It features organic and fair trade coffee and tea, frappés, smoothies and more.

“We strive to serve high quality coffee and great espresso drinks,” said owner Leslie Hiller.

One of the popular drinks is a signature latte called the Golden Pond. It is made with creamy espresso, steamed milk, Ghiradelli white chocolate, caramel, and is topped with whipped cream. All drinks are available hot or iced.

Customers coming in for their morning bakery or grocery shopping love the convenience of having the coffee shop located right in Camp’s SuperValu. There also is a drive-thru window for people on-the-go. Indoor/outdoor seating is available and it is a Wi-Fi hot spot. Hours are consistent with the bakery, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week, Memorial Day through Labor Day. In 2010, Hiller wanted to expand the shop to offer

unique books, gifts and wine. That summer she opened the second location, Red Canoe Cafe and Books.

The cafe, located next to Cathy’s Ice Cream on Highway 17, offers a full espresso bar, paninis and soup, specialty gifts and books, and a selection of wines from all over the country and the world.

“We concentrate on boutique wineries that are relatively unknown from around the world,” said Leslie.

The cafe offers a quaint, inviting atmosphere with comfy armchairs and plentiful seating where customers can sit and relax while using the free Wi-Fi. Customers can order breakfast or lunch from the menu which features homemade quiche, wraps, paninis and soups. Try one of their delicious bakery items such as a blueberrycranberry muffin or a chocolate chip and walnut cookie.

The shop sells a large selection of unique gifts and books which changes frequently with new items always coming in. The items featured in the shop are things you wouldn’t find anywhere else. From wall art, to candleholders and windchimes, there is

Conover Fire, EMS sets 12th auto show Conover Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Emergency Medical Services will hold its 12th annual car show and crafts market Sunday, July 28, at Conover Town Park, located on Highway K East.

The show will begin at 9 a.m. and more than 30 trophies for the various class competitions will be awarded at 3 p.m. There are many classes offered for autos, trucks and motorcycles.

The event also will include a crafts show, farmers market and swap meet on the grounds. Space is available and vendors may register at the gate.

Food and refreshments will be available.

Vintage cars and trucks will be on display at the Conover Car Show Sunday, July 28, at

New 3,000-square-foot laser tag arena added to fun at Eagle Falls Adventure Golf Eagle Falls Adventure Golf and Northern Lights Laser Tag is owned and operated by Mark and Karen Cropsey and their children, Zach and Emily, of St. Germain. They have been in the area 16 years, managing vacation properties and rentals.

Eagle Falls Adventure Golf Eagle Falls, located in Eagle River, is in its seventh season.

The theme of the course is a 1950s fishing camp.

Golfers putt their way around a fishing cabin, a bait shop and a fishing dock.

“We wanted to create a mini golf course that was challenging and interactive,” said Mark Cropsey.

Golfers can make several choices throughout the course. For example, they can cross the river by bridge or stepping stones, descend the ranger tower by stairs or slide, and many holes have multiple options for play.

The Cropseys are always working hard to change and improve the course. The landscaping is constantly maintained and updated to keep the course fresh and exciting for golfers.

“People discover something new each time they come to the course,” said Mark Cropsey. If you look close, hole No. 5 is in the shape of a giant muskie where you tee off at the tail and putt past the fin rock formations. The muskie’s eye is the cup.

“We wanted to build a course that was different from the normal mini golf course,” said Karen Cropsey. “Something symbolic was needed to highlight the area. Therefore, the main rock formation and waterfall features an eagle’s head.”

In addition to the cascading waterfalls, the course also includes lakes, rivers and fountains.

“We wanted the water

features to really stand out,” explained Mark Cropsey. “The course has 20,000 gallons of water.”

After finishing a round, golfers have the chance to win a free game on the 18th hole, humorously called “Nature Calls.” The hole features a talking outhouse that has become a fun feature of the course. The outhouse comments on golfers’ shots and then flushes if a free game is won.

Any free passes given by Eagle Falls will never expire, so customers can use them at their own convenience. Eagle Falls Adventure Golf offers discounts to camps, clubs and large groups.

Northern Lights Laser Tag This spring, Eagle Falls introduced a whole new activity to their mini golf operation — Northern Lights Laser Tag Arena. Laser tag can be enjoyed by all ages (6 and older is suggested) and the Eagle River laser tag is the only one in the region, according to Mark and Karen Cropsey.

Laser tag is essentially a high-tech game of tag or capture the flag where players are challenged to make the most tags on their opponents. The team with the most tags wins.

Northern Lights Laser Tag encompasses a 3,000square-foot, multilevel interactive facility where up to 16 people can compete in an exciting team-based or individual game. The fun effects include swirling fog, black lights, music, multilevel play areas and creative themed decorations.

After players enter a briefing and vesting chamber, a guide sets up the teams and gives instructions on how to play and use the high-tech phaser and vest.

Players then pass through the stargate and find themselves in a fogfilled wooded atmosphere surrounded by the northern
