Ride the 1900’s railway back in time to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum Visitors to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum in Laona can expect an exciting ride through Wisconsin history. From the late 1800s Soo Line Depot in Laona, visitors climb aboard the 1916 “4-Spot” steam locomotive and travel to Wisconsin Forestry Museum. This train has run on the same tracks for more than 80 years. The “4-spot” steam locomotive was built in 1916 by the Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes Barre, Pa. It was purchased Sept. 22, 1926, and was brought to Laona for use in the logging industry. The steam engine pulls two all-steel passenger coach cars and three cabooses. Passengers can sit in a rare cupola caboose as the vintage steam engine takes them to an actual site of a North Woods logging camp. As the conductors board people onto the train, the familiar call of “All aboard!” fills the air and the train lets off a few whistles. The train then backs up all the way to the camp, taking guests back in time to the early 1900s. Wisconsin Forestry Museum’s history dates back to the late 1890s, when it was established as a logging camp. In

1969, it opened as a museum. Wisconsin Forestry Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and also has won numerous awards. After the train drops guests off, they can visit the logging museum, nature center, animal barn and corral, blacksmith shop, slaughterhouse and Cracker Barrel Store. Children and adults can enjoy the animal barn and corral, which features a variety of baby animals to feed and pet, including rabbits, guinea hens, turkeys, chickens, goats, llamas, kittens and even a turtle town. All the animals can be approached and petted. The nature center on site is a hands-on facility featuring animal pelts and displays of plants, minerals and animals native to the North Woods. It also contains a selection of fossils. Guests can partake in the award-winning “Green Treasure” forest tour. Guests on the tour can learn about the history of the trees as well as how to identify different varieties. A Wilderness Water Tour also is available, which takes patrons on a 30-minute hayrack and pontoon boat ride down

On July 19 and Oct. 4, visitors can experience a real-life re-enactment of a Wild West train robbery. The cast of characters includes cowboys, a preacher, mountain men, card sharks and, of course,

After visiting the museum, guests board the train again and enjoy the ride back to the Soo Line Depot. Wisconsin Forestry Museum’s season runs from June 19 to Aug. 23, and reopens for the annual Fall Festival three Saturdays — Sept. 20 and 27 and Oct. 4. Wisconsin Forestry Museum is closed Sundays. The train leaves Laona every hour from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The last train leaves the logging museum for Laona at 4 p.m. Active military service members, their spouses and their immediate families are welcome to visit Wisconsin Forestry Museum for free of charge with proper identification. Group reservations are also accepted, but advance notice is required. Interested parties can learn more about Wisconsin Forestry Museum’s 2008 program by visiting the Web site at www.lum-

The museum features a petting zoo with different kinds of animals. Goats, llamas, turtles, chickens, ponies, geese and cats can all be found at the zoo. Babies of each of the animals also can be found.

Popular summer event draws near, Artarama ’08 set to go July 19 In just a short time, a favorite summer attraction will draw thousands of fine art enthusiasts to a little park in Eagle River. Promising the same wonderful array of treasures as always, Artarama’s River Walk Art Show will be held on Saturday, July 19, at Riverside Park near the Vilas Country Fairgrounds. The exhibition will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., rain or shine. It was 36 years ago when a small group of community-minded individuals, who loved the world of art, conceived

the idea for a quality art show. From that core group grew what has become one of the Midwest’s most prestigious art and crafts shows. “We have learned that the combination of quality and diversity is a guaranteed crowd pleaser,” comments Artarama committee member Kathy Anderson. “It takes a full year of work and coordination to put this show together. We constantly look for fresh and innovative creations that not only reflect great skill, but talent and taste as well.” The committee selects

Out of the hundreds of applications received this year, 125 artists have been chosen to exhibit at Artarama. A special tent will feature ‘Young at Art,’ where children are invited to display and sell their handmade arts and crafts. A silent auction will offer donated items from Artarama exhibitors at reduced prices, with all proceeds going toward scholarships. Artarama remains a nonprofit organization and all proceeds are returned to the community as civic contributions. Continuing to promote education, Artarama awarded two $1000 scholarships in 2008. (Bag lunch and soda provided for children fishing at the trout hatchery.) Youths who have been fishing at the trout hatchery need to be picked up at the Vilas

County Fairgrounds at 3 p.m. Those children who have been fishing with a guide need to be picked up at Hiawatha Supper Club, located at 1980 Highway 45 N. in Eagle River, at 4 p.m. (Fish will be cleaned by Butch Coutant at Hiawatha Supper Club.) There will be a cookout at Hiawatha Supper Club at 5:30 p.m. for the guides, spouses and volunteers. For more information about Guides/Kids Day, call Emerson at 1-(800) 359-6315 or (715) 4796400.

VACATION WEEK

Three Lakes: Jewel of the Nicolet Residents and visitors to Three Lakes can find events, activities and North Woods beauty in all year long. During the summer months, camping, hiking, biking, fishing, golf and water sports can all contribute to a fun-filled vacation. Anglers of all skill levels can find the fish they’re looking for on the south end of the Three Lakes/Eagle River Chain. Muskie, walleye and northern pike, as well as bluegill, crappie, bass, trout and perch can all be caught in the area waters. Numerous fishing guides and tackle shops provide the equipment and knowledge to help anglers new to the area. Golfers can take Highway 32 two miles east out of Three Lakes and find Big Stone Golf Course. The scenic nine-hole course provides a challenge to any golfer. After their round, golfers can dine and drink at the clubhouse overlooking Big Stone Lake. Many country roads provide bikers the opportunity to see the natural beauty of the North Woods. Additionally, the Three Eagle Trail gives bikers an alternative to riding Highway 45 to Eagle River. The Saturday of Labor Day weekend, Nicolet Wheel-AWay gives riders a chance to ride 30 to 45 miles of road through the Nicolet National Forest. Hikers and campers can enjoy the Nicolet’s

beauty on the many trails and campsites in the forest. Franklin Lake, Giant Pine, Spectacle Lake, Kentuck Lake, Luna-White Deer, Seven Mile Lake and the Sam Campbell Memorial Hiking Trail offer different length trails for different skill levels. The fall season brings hunters who’ll find plenty of grouse, duck and white-tailed deer. Snowmobilers are sure to find plenty of trails in the Three Lakes area. The Three Lakes trail system features about 70 miles of state-funded trails and nearly 50 miles of locally funded trails. These also connect to the major trails of the North Woods. Snowmobile rentals are available from many area businesses. Cross-country ski trails can be found throughout the Nicolet forest and surrounding areas. Winter visitors are also less than two hours away from several Wisconsin and Upper Michigan downhill ski areas. There also are a number of local events. Weekly events like Concerts in the Park are extremely popular. Every Tuesday evening, July through August, The Three Lakes Historical Society puts on a concert. Located at Cy Williams Park, bring your chairs and blankets and enjoy a relaxing evening of good music. The rain location is the high school auditorium. Every Wednesday at

The whole family will enjoy the quality pizzas, entrées and appetizers at Alexander’s Pizza of Eagle River.

Satisfied customers have made Alexander’s a North Woods favorite for pizza.

Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to the table Only the best ingredients are used and prepared with care at Alexander’s Pizza in Eagle River. “You can’t make good wine from cheap grams. It is an art — creating the perfect flavor balance,” said the owners. On the pizza artist’s palette is 100% full-cream mozzarella straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, ninemonth aged Romano, high-gluten flour, tomato puree and 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said - use the best to make the best. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and

finally, lightly sprinkled with oregano. It was, and remains a source of family pride that at the Alexander’s table, “Si mangia sempre bene!” (One always eats well!) Customers at Alexander’s have eaten well for more than 30 years. The owners, two brothers, have been serving the North Woods with quality, traditional pizza since they came looking for summer jobs more than 30 years ago. They came from a strong Italian community in Chicago where pizza was the staple. Since there were no pizzerias in the area, the brothers seized the opportunity, and the first Alexander’s Pizza was opened in the spring of 1972. Now, the pizzerias are “landmarks,” according to customers. The Crist brothers outlasted those who doubted they could succeed in the North Woods. Customers have visited from California to New Hampshire to enjoy Alexander’s fare. Celebrities, including NFL, NBA and NCAA coaches and play-

ers, film stars, sports commentators, captains of U.S. industry, newscasters and authors have discovered Alexander’s delicious pizza. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have come from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange-student employees from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is in every bite crust as well. Although the brothers have experimented with high-tech cost- and laborsaving methods, the pizza-making methods at Alexander’s remains traditional. At Alexander’s, the pizza is cooked on a 150-pound stone deck.

Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and a choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. To entertain diners of all ages, Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball machines, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties for all ages. Alexander’s Pizza, housed in a turn-of-thecentury remodeled building, is located in downtown Eagle River on Railroad Street Parking is available across the street. Customers can dine in or carry out, and can call ahead of time to have the pizza ready when they arrive. Tradition, customer service and fun can always be found at Alexander’s Pizza. To enjoy the “best pizza in the North,” call (715) 479-7363.

Custom jewelry and musical clocks found at Lehner-Stephan Jewelers In 1976, Mike Stephan was attending college at UW-Oshkosh. In the summers he would visit his uncle Al Lehner in the great North Woods. His uncle told Mike and his brother, “I wish one of you would go to school for watch making and take over my business.” Two years later, Mike was attending school in Milwaukee for watch making, and two years later, he took over for his uncle. A year later, his uncle died and he was left to learn the rest of the business by himself. He has owned the store since 1980, though it was originally founded in 1945 by his uncle, Al Lehner. With more than 30 years of experience as a certified master watchmaker, Mike Stephan has a philosophy about jewelry that many other places seem to lack. “My aunt always used to say, ‘If you can’t do it

right the first time, when will you find the time to do it again?’ ” Mike Stephan repairs jewelry and watches and often ends up making them better than they were before the repair. “Lots of pieces are made to cost less. They just aren’t as good structurally. It’s what you put into it.” Stephan said, “If it is worth fixing to the person, I’ll try to do it. My motto is, if it’s been made once, it can be made again. There are very few times when something is not able to be fixed.” Stephan said he can customize antique pieces and repair diamond and stone settings. “You can make a bad stone look good just by how you set it,” he said. Stephan started by making and repairing watches, but soon got into jewelry sales. He would, however, notice that rings were not built to last and started to

strengthening them as well as little redesigns here and there,” he said. Soon he bought his own casting equipment and started creating his own designs. He now creates custom orders. “They are more expensive, but they are one of a kind and the customers can be assured of the quality,” Stephan said. Stephan now has his own personal lines of jewelry out, including some simple, free-form earrings. He is also getting ready to release some new designs on his limited watch set. “I see myself as an artist more than a jeweler,” Stephan said. “I take pride in making and fixing items.” Stephan also sells other quality items with a good value to the customer. Diamonds and other precious stones can be purchased at LehnerStephan. The store offers a

large variety of other jewelry, including watches, necklaces, pendants, earrings and rings, as well as unique and quality giftware, all hand picked by Stephan himself. If the jewelry the customer is looking for is not in the store, Stephan can order it for them. “Since the market for diamonds and gemstones is always changing, when customers give enough notice, I can shop for them to find the best prices on large diamonds and gemstones,” said Stephan. “The right stone will always show up when given time to research.” Additionally, the store carries a very large selection of clocks. A wide selection of those are musical clocks with some models playing up to 12 songs. Nonmusical clocks and watches from makers like Seiko can also be found at the store. When asked what the

most popular items in the store were, Stephan said, “Every piece is popular and meaningful to the person buying it. It is all popular in some way.” Stephan said customers from all over have commented on his competitive prices and quality items. “They know that we care and that we have the knowledge,” Stephan said. “They come back to us year after year because they trust us.” For Stephan, the most important thing is the customer. “I enjoy helping people and seeing the joy on the customers faces when they see the results of our efforts.” Lehner-Stephan Jewelers is located at 110 Wall St. in Eagle River. They are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The store can be reached by phone at (715) 479-4520 or online at www.EagleGold.com.

Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

SAYNER/ STAR LAKE

‘A Loon Story’ is a major hit, feature of Hoot Owl Productions Hoot Owl Productions of St. Germain offers a feature length DVD to compliment their extensive collection of wildlife & nature photographs and CDs. The DVD, “a Loon Story”, shows the behavior of a pair of common loons in Vilas County. The female, who was caught and banded in 1993, has raised nine chicks at the same lake since that time. The film shows the 28 days spent by the pair as they care for their eggs and rear their offspring. The 55 hours of filming was edited to a 104minute feature, with 13 selectable chapters. Certain scenes show the loon interacting with other wildlife, including turtles, blue heron, king fishers and red-winged blackbirds. “A Loon Story” is for all loon lovers, from the casual observer to the loon fanatic, according to owners Robert (Bob) and Jackie Baldwin. Robert is currently working on several other films including “A Loon Story Volume II”. Hoot Owl Productions has received hundreds of e-mails from folks who have purchased the DVD including ornithologist, Laura Erickson, who wrote a review of the DVD. “This is a cosmically good DVD — the kind of thing I wish they’d put on TV sets in restaurants instead of talking heads when you can’t hear the sound anyway. It’s beautifully produced, with no narration whatsoever,

letting the loons and nature do the talking. I recommend ‘A Loon Story highly,’ ” wrote Erickson. Another customer said “It is great! I wondered how you could make a movie that long with no narration. It really tells its own story. After a few minutes you get into the story and you don’t need someone leading you by the hand.” According to Jackie, loons often return to the same lake to nest, though not always in the same spot. The Baldwin family has been in wildlife and nature photography and audio recording for more

than 25 years. Robert Baldwin created and developed the NorthSound and NatureQuest lines of nature recordings in the early 1990s for NorthWord Press. Their original wildlife photos have appeared in major magazines and newspapers, as well as other printed items such as postcards, calendars, puzzles and books. The photographs are now available in several sizes but are also available in other sizes by special order. All photographs are printed on archival-quality paper with fade-resistant ink for photos that

will last 100-plus years. Hoot Owl Productions offers other wildlife and nature-related products including nature and music CDs, nature-only CDs and Northwoods Gift Baskets. Hoot Owl Productions is open most days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and other times by appointment. They are located in the gift shop in the office of the St. Germain Motel at 170 Hwy. 70 E. Thursdays, Eagle Waters offers crafts for children. Tuesday evening, families can participate in a naturalist program with a representative from Trees For Tomorrow. Other activities Eagle Waters offers include, Wii, Kidz Kamp, fishing guide chats and more. A visit to the resort would not be complete without a visit to the Kee-Mi-Con Trading Post for sweet treats, ice cream or gift shopping. Eagle Waters Resort underwent a major facelift in 2006 and continues to make improvements. The owners, Jeff and Laura Koranda, partnered with CornerStone Custom Builders to enhance the resort with the addition of the Kee-MiCon Lodge and Trading Post. These additions combined with the existing accommodations created a top-notch, four-star resort with more than 40

unique lodging units. Lodging accommodations include condos, duplexes, cottages and the brand-new, 24-unit lodge building. The lodge units are decorated in a rustic elegant North Woods décor. “Stop by and visit. There is usually a model open,” Jeff Koranda noted. The title of the exhibit represents the unique way in which the Lac Vieux Desert band has followed Ojibwe (Chippewa) traditions throughout the centuries into modern times. The exhibit presents the history of this very special band of Ojibwe Native Americans to the public for the first time. It tells the unique story of their own traditions and culture through their historic photographs, crafts, foods, demonstrations, interviews, memorabilia and regalia. The Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Historic Preservation Office and Lac Vieux Desert Tribal volunteers, led by Giiwegiizhigookway Martin, Alina McGeshick, Joyce Hazen, Roger LaBine, Waabanookwe La Rock, and Rose Polar Martin, have worked hard, side by side, with volunteers from the Land O’ Lakes Historical Society and the NorthernWaters Museum, led by Sandra Brown, Sally Schlack, Mary Bybee, Mary Thomas, and Barbara Nehring, to present this multi-year exhibit. The NorthernWaters Museum is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3

p.m. through Labor Day weekend. It will also be open in September through Colorama and for special occasions. Check local sources for fall times and call to schedule special tours. New to the exhibit is a photographic display featuring tribal veterans, honored for their patriotism and service to their country. Also new is a presentation featuring the large number of modern tribal programs currently benefiting tribal members. Another major addition has been a second watercolor collage by artist Shirley Surges, showing the area covered by three treaties which have most significantly impacted this Ojibwe band. The painting also graphically demonstrates the tribal rights reserved in those treaties. This collage joins a year one painting by Surges and a handpainted watercolor/collage map, telling one version of the Ojibwe migration story. One of the favorite sections of the display has been the Regalia Room, filled with majestic beaded bandolier

Museum: children’s programs set this summer FROM PAGE 20 hibit feature handmade porcupine quill boxes, both old and new, a selection of beaded and quilled handmade jewelry, and other artifacts handmade by Ojibwe artists, including a special hand-painted drum and other objects crafted and loaned to the exhibit by Lac Vieux Desert artist, Waabanookway LaRock. A model of a traditional birch-bark canoe was made for the exhibit by Lac du Flambeau artist Leon Valliere. The exhibit also feature several authentic artifacts loaned by the Lac du Flambeau George Brown Jr. Museum and Cultural Center. Tying the exhibit directly to Land O’ Lakes is a turn-of-the-century shirt, hand beaded by a Lac Vieux Deserts tribal member. Honoring Land O’ Lakes entrepreneur Julius Dickman, the shirt is loaned to the exhibit by Phyllis Gottman and the Dickman family. A special children’s section features a partially constructed wigwam, showing construction materials and meth-

ods. Children will also find a demonstration traditional canoe that they can actually sit in, as well as an array of coloring sheets featuring local animals with their Ojibwe (Chippewa) names. Expanding the exhibit to the museum grounds, an outdoor exhibit features an Ojibwe birchbark wigwam, a traditional fire pit and traditional Ojibwe plants, including a special Three Sisters Garden. The Three Sisters garden exemplifies the way symbiotic plants can provide a magnificent, healthy garden in a small space. The Ojibwe Three Sisters Garden features three plant species planted several weeks apart, each helping the others to grow and flourish. Information on how to plant such a garden is available from the museum or from the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. In addition to the exhibit, many programs scheduled for this year will carry out an educational theme. Programs and demonstrations will include the following: a description of

the maple sugaring process and a presentation on maple sugar foods; a program on construction, performance, and spirituality of the Native American flute; a demonstration of crafting with individual stitch, as well as loom beadwork; a demonstration of processing wild rice; and a demonstration of the tradition of powwow dancing. Replicas of the worldrecord muskie and hybrid muskie are on display for all to see at Musky Hunter Store of St. Germain. Caught by John Knobla in Lac Vieux Desert in 1919, the worldrecord hybrid muskie is 54 inches long and weighs 51 pounds, 3 ounces. The fish that’s recognized as the world-record muskie was caught by Louis Spray in the Chippewa Flowage near Hayward in 1949. Its acclaimed size is 631/2 inches and 69 pounds, 11 ounces. At least a dozen giant fish are on display at Musky Hunter Store. Most of the replicas on display were made by Lax Taxidermy in Conover. Musky Hunter Store is also the publishing site for the popular Musky Hunter Magazine. This

magazine comes out six times a year, with a circulation of approximately 36,000. The magazine, owned by Esox Promotions Inc., is published to educate and entertain muskie fisherman. Aside from the muskie displays and magazine, Musky Hunter Store carries an extensive line of muskie fishing products, including apparel, muskie release tools and books. Also offered at the store are a variety of fishing DVDs, starring Musky Hunter Magazine’s editor Jim Saric and managing editor Steve Heiting. Also available are DVDs containing the first two seasons of “The Musky Hunter” television show. Additionally, Musky Hunter Store carries a selection of art prints, carvings and other novelty items.

Look for “The Musky Hunter” television show as it begins its third season in January 2009. Hosted by Jim Saric, the show is filmed throughout the Midwest and can be seen in this area on FOX Sports Net. Musky Hunter Store is located at 7978 Highway

70 E. in St. Germain. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; closed Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, call (715) 477-2178 or visit the Web sites www.muskyhunter.com or www.muskyhuntertv. com.

‘Make your own plush animal’ machine part of fun featured at Animals N More Customers looking for a unique souvenir from Eagle River can find one at Animals N More. A broad array of stuffed animals are available at Animals N More, and patrons can even make their own animal. “We are very excited about Animaland — a fun machine used to stuff your very own plush animal. The smile it brings to faces of all ages as a family member creates their own animal is great to see,” said owner Debra Preuhs. “Customers pick what type of animal they want, then take a star, make a wish, and put that star in their animal and stuff it with love.” After all that, customers pick out their own outfit and cradle for their new plush animal. A birth certificate is then given to the stuffed animal at the store. These animals come in many different species, including giraffes, bears, and ponies. The store also offers different items to dress up the animals.

Visitors can stop in and see the giant bear, the pride of Animals N More’s stuffed toy collection. The store also features other North Woods critters such as frogs, bears, moose and loons. Customers may even find their favorite breed of dogs or cats. Some of the brands represented at the store include Mary Meyer, Aurora and Bearington. Other giftware at Animals N More includes jewelry, Klutz activity books, dolls, Heritage Lace, John Deere, die-cast cars, American Expedition gifts, wildlife throws plus many other great items. “Make your trip to downtown Eagle River a special experience,” said Preuhs. “It’s fun for the whole family.” Animals N More is located in downtown Eagle River at 217 E. Wall St., across from Vilas Cinema. Animals N More is open seven days a week during the summer. Call (715) 479-9330 for more information.

Animals N’ More doesn’t just offer a huge selection of stuffed animals. Clothing also can be found with North

Woods style. Pajamas with funny animal scenes such as “Nature Calls” are offered.

CornerStone Custom Builders displays unique model homes CornerStone Custom Builders Inc. continues its winning combination of quality, custom homebuilding and competitive pricing. CornerStone has a total of eight model homes available for inspection at its three North Woods locations: highways 45, 17 and 70 in Eagle River; highways 47 and K on the west side of Rhinelander across from Bergstrom Ford-Lincoln-Mercury; and Highway 51 South, three miles south of the bridge at the entrance to Timber Ridge Golf Club in Minocqua. Each of CornerStone’s project managers are experienced builders in their own right, and each is teamed with a knowledgeable assistant to help home buyers make design decisions and product choices during the construction process. “Our model homes are there to provide inspiration and to showcase product choices and building quality,” said Craig Weberg, project manager at the Minocqua location. “We are true custom builders, therefore we can modify any of our models to suit individual requirements.” Rhinelander project manager Eric Klein added, “We can really do just about anything a client asks for — shell construction for do-ityourselfers, family homes, lakefront estates and even apartments, hotels and other light commercial construction.” CornerStone Custom Builders utilizes the panelized method of construction, in which the framing components of the structure (the walls, floor deck and trusses) are built indoors in a controlled environment. These components are then carried by trailer to

the construction site and quickly and accurately assembled. “The great advantage to homeowners,” according to Eagle River project manager Darren Rubo, “is that their home is under a roof quickly and the framing lumber is not exposed to a lot of moisture or damage. This makes for a better structure. Once the framing is completed on site, the house is roofed, sided and finished out just like any stick-built home.” All of CornerStone’s panelized framing comes from Custom Components of Eagle River Inc., a company known for supplying framing to the area’s leading home builders for many years. Another advantage found in CornerStone homes is the use of custom doors and trim throughout provided by Custom Millworking Inc. “The ability to select custom trim details and finishes is what separates a Custom home from a standard home. The moment you enter that space, the difference in quality of the woodwork becomes immediately apparent,” said Joe Power, vice president of operations of Custom Millworking. “One other service we regularly provide to CornerStone Custom Builders is to prefinish their wood siding, including back-staining, in order to provide a superior, lasting product. Those kind of differences all add up to many years of trouble-free enjoyment in a home.” Jeremy Oberlander, another CornerStone project manager in Eagle River, agrees. “When you add CornerStone’s construction advantages to a very competitive price, it’s easy to see why our company has experienced such

steady growth. We will build over 75 homes this year. “Our good relationships with our trade subcontractors and our volume material purchasing allow us to deliver a high-quality home at a fair price, and that combination should lead to continued success for years to come,” added Eagle River project manager Darren Rubo. CornerStone’s business hours are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. The phone numbers for their three locations are: Eagle River, (715) 479-0001; Rhinelander, (715) 362-7888; and Minocqua, (715) 3560001.

At Northern Lights, customers will find glass objects from the Victorian period, carnival glass and collectibles from the 1960s period which includes basics such as mixing bowls, bakers, utensils and other kitchenware.

lures will be given away during the evening. All youths in attendance will be given a goody bag. Adults are welcome to attend with their children. What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat — the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full

cream mozzarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexander’s Pizza, these basics have created

a tradition of quality food, which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexander’s Pizza has the cleanest kitchen you’ll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexander’s Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexander’s Pizza — that’s where. Alexander’s Pizza is located on Railroad Street in downtown Eagle River. Call (715) 479-7363, and your pizza will be ready when you arrive. Alexander’s Pizza is the place for you. ADVERTISEMENT
