Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

Prime Choice Meat Market in Eagle River is a one-stop shop for freshly cut USDA steaks, all-natural pork and poultry and premium

seafood. Also offered are deli meats, sausages and brats, specialty cheeses and a variety of wines.

Prime Choice Meat Market offers top-quality products Prime Choice Meat Market, located just south of Eagle River on Highway 45, has been a local favorite for more than 20 years. Owners Todd and Jacqui Monge have always had a commitment to high-quality products and excellent customer service. Prime Choice Meat Market has long been known as one of a kind to both its loyal North Woods customers and friends from out of town. Prime Choice is Eagle River’s one-stop shop for fresh-cut USDA prime and top choice steaks, fresh allnatural pork and poultry, and premium seafood. The market also is known for its selection of gourmet cheeses, fine wines and homemade smoked meats. Prime Choice carries a selection of 100% grass-fed beef and certified organic chicken. “We carry only USDA prime and top choice steaks, fresh cut and hand trimmed to our customers’ orders and satisfaction,” said manager Rick Behrens. “Customers are amazed at the quality and appearance of a handtrimmed piece of meat. Everyone likes their steak cut a little different, and you just can’t get that with a precut showcase steak,” he

said. Prime Choice grinds its own ground chuck and fresh-ground sirloin. “All of our ground beef is made fresh on the premises, not bought from another processor. We feel that our freshground products makes for great grilling, especially our famous bacon burger, which has bacon blended in for a unique flavor,” noted Behrens. “We also have several additional products available, including restaurant-quality stuffed chicken breasts, our very own cranberry bacon burger, custom-seasoned pulled pork and our newest bratwurst, the bacon and cheddar brat,” said Behrens. Prime Choice also is widely known for its large selection of more than 50 different smoked meats. All smoked products such as bacon, jerky, summer sausage, pork chops, hams and bratwurst are made in Prime Choice’s own onpremise smokehouse. “Our market produces an Italian sausage, polish sausage and authentic chorizo sausage,” noted assistant Mark Blotnicki. “Our varieties of fresh and frozen bratwursts include our original, onion, jalapeño, sauerkraut and wild rice

brats. Plus, try our famous cranberry bratwurst, our top-selling flavored brat and customer favorite.” The popular cranberry brat is featured at Eagle River’s own Cranberry Fest every October. Prime Choice also offers a large selection of deli meats and cheeses. “You can find some of the ordinary meat and cheese varieties found in most other stores, but our focus is on quality taste while still being comparable in price,” said Behrens. “We carry a wide variety of imported Welsh cheddars such as English Tintern and Black Mountain along with specialty cheeses such as Domestic Maytag bleu, Rosenborg Danish bleu, French imported brie and several new imported varieties, that are very highly rated,” said Behrens. Prime Choice also offers an array of top-quality Wisconsin cheeses, including Deppler’s full-cream baby Swiss, Widmers Specialty brick and Black River Gorgonzola. The store is located at 1144 Highway 45, south of Eagle River. Prime Choice can be contacted at (715) 479-4456 or found online at prime-choicemeats.com.

Artarama set this Saturday This coming weekend, a favorite summer attraction will draw thousands of fine art enthusiasts to Riverside Park in Eagle River, as Artarama’s River Walk Art Show is slated for Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine. The arts and crafts exhibition will feature many returning and several new artists. It was 41 years ago that a small group of community-minded individuals who loved the world of art conceived the idea of a quality art show. From that core group grew what has become one of the Midwest’s longest running and most

prestigious art and craft shows. “We have learned that the combination of quality and variety keeps people coming back year after year,” said Karen Kubacki. “It takes a full year of work and coordination to put this show together. We constantly look for fresh and innovative artists who not only reflect great skill but talent and taste as well.” The committee selects a balance of artists and craftspeople within painting, fiber art, woodworking, glassware, pottery, jewelry, photography, quality crafts and much more. Approximately 125 artists have

been chosen to exhibit at Artarama. A special feature is the Young at Art tent, where children will be invited to display and sell their handmade creations. Meanwhile, a silent auction will offer donated items from Artarama exhibitors at reduced prices, with all proceeds going toward scholarships and artist in residence programs. Artarama remains a nonprofit organization and all proceeds are returned to the community as civic contributions. Continuing to promote education, Artarama awarded three $1,000

scholarships in 2012, supported the Northland Pines High School band fundraiser and contributed to nearby library art programs. Entertainment will add to the festive atmosphere throughout the day and picnic-style food will be available on site. Parking will be available at Vilas County Fairgrounds. Visitors planning to attend the show and stay in the area for the weekend should make reservations for accommodations as soon as possible. The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center can be reached at (715) 479-8575.

For traditional pizza, diners of all ages head to Alexander’s in Eagle River. The owners use nothing but the best products to

make their pizza. The restaurant also has a wide assortment of arcade games for both youths and adults.

Alexander’s brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened Alexander’s in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a

“thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said: use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with ninemonth-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli,

shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and tripleraised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella,

California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties. Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s Pizza is located in downtown Eagle River on Railroad Street. Parking is available across the street. Customers can dine in or carry out, and can call ahead to have the pizza ready when they arrive. To enjoy the “best pizza in the North,” call (715) 479-7363.

Three Lakes Lions set annual auction The Three Lakes Lions Club will hold its annual auction Saturday, July 20, at Three Lakes High School with doors opening at 11 a.m. for item inspection. Food and drinks will be available and the sale will begin at noon. “Anyone who has clean, usable and serviceable items they are willing to donate, we ask they please contact the club as soon as possible,” said club Secretary Ken Moak. The club won’t accept donations of clothes, large appliances or sleeper sofas. “This isn’t a rummage sale,” said Moak. “None of these items have sold well in the past. We do take certain large items provided they are in working condition. We’ll even accept boats, snowmobiles, paddleboats, autos, consumer electronics and furniture.” This fundraiser serves the community by providing it with a free haul-away policy, putting on the auction and funding club projects.

Three concerts remain in summer music series The Three Lakes Historical Society will continue its 2013 Summer Concerts in the Park series through Aug. 6. The concerts take place Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Cy Williams Park gazebo, which is located behind the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce building on Superior Street. The concerts are free, although donations for the society are welcome. Popcorn, soda, water and cider will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the Three Lakes Historical Society and Museum.

Attendees can take along blankets, chairs and even a picnic for a relaxing summer evening of music in the park. The schedule of the concerts is as follows: — July 23, GB’s Dance Band (big band); — July 30, Bret & Frisk (classic acoustic rock); and — Aug. 6, Hand-Picked Bluegrass. For more information, call (715) 546-8010 or 5463349. In the event of rain, concerts will be relocated to the Three Lakes High School auditorium.

Memories made at Lick-a-dee Splitz “When I go to Lick-a-dee Splitz, I feel like dancing!” That’s how one young patron described his experience at the Three Lakes ice cream shop. “To me,” said owner Denise Kerns, “that speaks as highly of us as a five-star review. Our top-quality products make me proud, but the staff and the atmosphere are what it’s really all about.” At Lick-a-dee Splitz in the heart of downtown Three Lakes, every customer is greeted with a smile and a genuine desire to make each trip a happy memory. From the music played to the cheerful, unique décor and the

friendly staff, everything at Lick-a-dee Splitz says, “Good times happen here!” Patrons can select from 28-plus flavors of ice cream, a dozen or so varieties of fudge made right on the premises and sampled freely and an impressive array of chocolates. Ice cream cakes and pies are custom-made for any special event. Also featured are novelty and nostalgic candies, toys, gifts and more. To quench any thirst try the fresh-squeezed lemonade, an all-natural fruit smoothie or an old-fashioned malt or a float made with one of the classic glass-bottled soft drinks.

Up for a challenge? Then the Bidonkadonk is for you! This massive sundae, comprised of 12 scoops of ice cream and four toppings, plus whipped cream, nuts and cherries, was originally intended as a family sized treat but each year dozens of people of all ages conquer the giant treat on their own. “I don’t recommend it,” said Kerns, “but it’s like a proverbial frozen mountain that some feel compelled to climb just because it’s there!” Everyone who eats a Bidonkadonk, whether alone or in a group, gets their picture taken and posted on the electronic Frame of Fame displayed in the store, as well as on the Lick-a-dee Splitz Facebook page. If the Bidonkadonk is just a bit too much try a classic banana split or one of the specialty sundaes. The Dish o’ Dirt, complete with chocolate sauce, crushed chocolate sandwich cookies and gummy worms, is a favorite with the younger crowd. Lick-a-dee Splitz is proud to carry a limited selection of Sassy Cow Dairy ice cream. Sassy Cow is a super premium ice cream made just outside of Madison by a small family dairy. At 14% butterfat, it’s some of the richest ice cream available anywhere. Sassy Cow is available in delicious flavor combinations such as orange-chocolate, ginger-pear or peanut butter and banana to name a

Wolf Pack Cafe offers unique meals in homey and rustic atmosphere Newly remodeled with a North Woods motif, Wolf Pack Cafe, once named Restaurant of the Month by Discover Wisconsin, offers many unique and homestyle meals. Described by Discover Wisconsin as having a “simple and homey atmosphere,” Wolf Pack Cafe in St. Germain is a great place to go for a meal and a smile. Recently featured on the May 2012 TV episode of Discover Wisconsin, the cafe was also recognized for Best Meal featuring their delicious corned beef and cabbage in an Eau Claire newspaper. The 2003 Unlimited Magazine said the restaurant had the best pancakes. The Burst-O-Berry pancakes with blueberry, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry is popular. Customers can create their own pancakes from these and other options such as banana,

Lass and her husband, Joe, have owned and operated Wolf Pack Cafe since January 1999 and strive to bring the best to their customers. And that is just what they have done over the past 13 years. “We try to do everything a step above the rest,” said Lass. The cafe’s motif is true to its name — wall-to-wall wolves welcome diners as they enter. The décor includes wolf prints and customer-donated handmade wolf items. It truly gives a North Woods feel to the dining experience. Besides being known for their “world’s best pancakes” and “world’s greatest burgers,” Wolf Pack Cafe is St. Germain’s favorite for their delicious breakfast. Joe’s Breakfast is a popular meal with customers and includes fresh-shredded hash browns topped with two eggs and smothered with homemade sausage gravy. Other unique meals offered by Wolf Pack Cafe include pan-fried perch (available blackened) with eggs,

FROM PAGE 24 _______________________ over the country, including Washington, New York and Florida that have visited Tall Pines have said again and again that it is the only antique shop that has exclusively fishing tackle, and an extensive collection at that. Soczka emphasizes that he is always looking to buy old fishing tackle. He pays cash and will conduct an appraisal and offer a fair price. He buys all tackle, he doesn’t pick through the collections that people bring to him. Visitors can buy, sell and even swap lures at Tall Pines. There are items in the shop at all price points. Also of interest for the muskie fishermen is the very popular Muskie Lure Swap Board. The board has about 800 new and slightly used muskie lures on it at this time and is always growing. People can trade in two of their unwanted lures for one of the hot muskie catching lures on the board. This has been a big attraction to the shop due to the high cost of muskie lures. People come into the gallery for a variety of reasons but the most common customers are those who collect old fishing tackle and those looking for unique, one-of-kind cabin décor. Though Soczka buys, sells and trades rods, reels, lures and out-of-print muskie books, his passion really lies in collecting, selling and sharing his love for the history of lures. Many of the customers are regulars that come in
