Benson Builders enhances customer services with new model home and design center Benson Builders in Land O’ Lakes has developed a reputation for building landmark homes throughout the North Woods. Now, a new model home and design center will build on that stature. From majestic full-log and timber-frame homes to conventionally framed homes, additions and renovations, Benson Builders is dedicated to creating homes with distinctive “up north” detailing. While the building firm got its roots here in 1977, over the past three years Benson Builders has made a number of improvements in its effort to remain the premier builder in the North Woods. The company focus has been to enhance their design capabilities and customer communications, improve cost control, offer more material and product options to their customers and provide expanded postconstruction services. Leading the Benson team in enhancing customer and design services is Bill Bye, who joined the firm as the new chief operating officer. He has spent more than 25 years in the residential construction industry, focusing on custom luxury homes “While we move forward on these fronts, we have steadfastly maintained our commitment to unsurpassed quality and customer service,” said Bye. “We have done this by hav-

ing the best employees to ensure the highest-quality fit and finish on every one of our projects, having exacting construction standards and using the best quality material.” The new model and design center, set to open this fall on Highway 45 just south of Highway B, offers a state-of-the-art facility that showcases the latest in home design, materials and automation. The design center features interactive samples of everything from roofing, siding, stonework and windows that customers can mix and match to see how they fit together. Visitors also can see and touch a vast sampling of flooring, wall finishes, windows, cabinets and more. “When viewing the model home, you will be able to see firsthand that Benson Builders truly does provide the highest-quality fit and finish to every aspect of the project, and our uncompromising dedication to the tiniest of details that make all the difference in the realization of your North Woods dream home,” said Bye. In improving their design capabilities, Benson Builders has enhanced the software to be able to provide customers 3D modeling and real-time design changes. They also have updated all of their computers and CAD capabilities to provide customers with the lat-

Benson Builders homes have been featured in publications such as Log Home Living and Traditional Home Magazine.

Benson Builders in Land O’ Lakes specialty is building custom homes, including rustic log and timber homes and convention-

est in preconstruction interior and exterior interactive modeling. New graphic capabilities provide realistic visuals interpretation of plans. Benson Builders understands the importance of communication with their customers as an essential part of the building process. They now send construction progress pictures to customers on a weekly basis so they can see what’s happening while they are out of town. The company also has brought some of the best tradesmen in the North Woods under the Benson Builders umbrella through three new companies: Cutting Edge Paint & Stain, Logix Home Electronics and Premier Masonry. These new companies have expanded customer options and offerings of every-

thing from exterior products to flooring, wall finishes, cabinetry and home automation. The relationship with Benson Builders doesn’t end when a project is completed. They have enhanced their post-construction services and do everything from simple repairs to full remodels and additions to constructing a garage for all of those North Woods toys. “For our new and existing customers, we handle anything from small items like screen or window replacements to repainting and staining interiors or exteriors, installing or repairing stonework and tilework and adding security systems,” said Bye. Benson Builders’ talented team possesses unique abilities that have helped them earn the respect of their customers, subcontrac-

tors and suppliers, as well as that of fellow contractors in the North Woods. A number of their homes have been featured in national magazines, including Log Home Living, Log Homes Illustrated, Distinctive Wood Homes, Log Home Design Ideas and Cabin Life, with a recent home project to be featured in Traditional Home Magazine. Bye says referrals account for the majority of Benson’s business. “Our greatest satisfaction is knowing that our source for new customers is by word of mouth from our past customers,” he said. “Our customers are very proud to show their new home to their friends. It gives us a sense of pride in knowing that our dedication to our high craftsmanship standards and customer service is unmatched.”

Benson Builders also feels strongly about the importance of community involvement. When Habitat for Humanity built homes in Eagle River and Land O’ Lakes, they became aware of the need for coordination of qualified tradespeople and jumped in to help. In 2009, Land O’ Lakes saw the addition of an organic community garden, and Benson Builders was glad to lend a hand with the design and construction. Benson Builders is a member of the Headwaters Builders Association and is licensed as a general contractor in Wisconsin and Michigan. Visitors can stop by the current office at 5357 Highway B in Land O’ Lakes, call (715) 547-3941, email info@bensonbuildersllc.com or visit the website at bensonbuildersllc.com.

Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

Rob’s Loose Moose in Land O’ Lakes offers excellent food and a comfortable, family-friendly atmosphere. Chewy or fall-

off-the-bone barbecued ribs remain a house specialty at Rob’s Loose Moose.

Find traditions, family dining at Big Rob’s Loose Moose Formerly Tia Juana Supper Club, Big Rob’s Loose Moose Pub & Grill in Land O’ Lakes has expanded in the last 11 years to serve delicious North Woods favorites to diners in a family atmosphere. Owner Rob “Big Rob” Andersen prides himself on having a family-friendly restaurant. “It’s a family restaurant and a supper club — a little bit of everything with the addition of the new dinner salad,” said Big Rob. The interior of the restaurant has been brightened by the addition of large windows, according to Andersen. The restaurant has two dining rooms. The parking lot also has been enlarged. But even with a new look, Loose Moose continues to serve favorites like barbecued ribs — formerly the house specialty at Tia Juana. Diners can choose from chewy or fall-off-thebone ribs which are lightly smoked and seasoned with Big Rob’s own homemade BBQ sauce. Few restaurants offer an all-you-can-eat fish fry every night, but Loose

Moose is an exception. The nightly fish fry includes soup or salad, choice of potato and rye bread along with baked beans and coleslaw. The restaurant also offers an all-you-caneat shrimp boil. Potato choices include Moose fries, Boston wedges, baked potato or garlic mashed; vegetables or rice also are offered as sides. Diners can choose walleye, panfish or poor man’s lobster as their entrée of choice. All are served with soup, salad and choice of potato. Also available is roast duck on a bed of rice blend served with Rose’s black cherry and burgundy sauce. This entrée comes with soup and salad. Loose Moose offers a large array of deluxe sandwiches and appetizing basket meals, such as the barbecued pulled-pork sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, black angus hamburgers, coconut shrimp, deluxe butterfly shrimp, chicken strips and reubens. All come with coleslaw, baked beans and choice of potato. For those with a hearty

appetite, try Loose Moose’s all-you-can-eat meals or moose-cut meals. Diners looking for prime rib Saturday can choose between a 16-ounce cut or 24ounce moose cut of savory prime rib served with choice of potato, soup and salad. Loose Moose also offers a 16-ounce or 24-ounce moose-cut rib eye, along with its recent addition of an 8-ounce portion of filet. All are served with choice of potato, soup and salad. A great array of appetizers and desserts for two are available, as well as a selection of vegetarian meals. Loose Moose offers a children’s menu which includes meals for youths younger than 10. It includes chicken strips, hot dogs, fish fry and hamburgers. These meals also include Moose fries, a drink and pudding. Also added to the children’s menu are macaroni and cheese and a personalsize cheese pizza. Both include applesauce, a drink and pudding. Loose Moose has a full bar and an impressive wine collection. On tap are 10 domestic and import beers to

choose from, including Hacker-Pschorr. Patrons of all ages can enjoy the arcade room across from the bar and can view Big Rob’s collection of mounted animals in the dining room adjacent to the bar, which includes a bear, a moose head and an albino deer. Loose Moose has served food since July 2002. Big Rob also owns Hillside Resort on Lac Vieux Desert, which includes a full resort and restaurant, for the last 28 seasons. Located on the corner of highways 45 and E in Land O’ Lakes, Loose Moose bar is open daily at 4 p.m. Dinner is served at 5 p.m. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. Loose Moose also accepts reservations for large groups. Reservations for parties, meetings and other special occasions with more than 20 people can be made for mornings, afternoons and even on days Rob’s Loose Moose is closed. ALEXANDER’S FAMILY PIZZA PARLOR FOR OVER 35 YEARS Downtown Eagle River Minocqua (715) 356-2628 (715) 479-7363

Dinner guests throughout the lakeside dining room at the historic White Spruce in Eagle

River have a scenic view of the Eagle River Chain of Lakes.

Historic White Spruce offers lunch, dinner menu Conveniently located just north of the bridge in Eagle River, Eddie B’s White Spruce Restaurant and Tavern offers great food and an authentic North Woods dining experience. Dating back to the 1800s, the restaurant is the oldest building in Eagle River and has preserved its historic charm. The interior is cozy and rustic, complete with log structures and accents. There is a large bar area and ample seating, booths and tables, for groups of any size. The White Spruce offers a full lunch and dinner menu featuring dishes such as a fillet and shrimp surf n’ turf, chicken Asiago, smoked ribs, steaks and more. They feature nightly specials that change frequently. Most nights they serve a Parmesan and crusted haddock. Recently, they added a whole new smoking system, allowing them to make authentic, smoked dishes. Their homemade smoked ribs are a favorite with diners. They offer a fish fry on Friday nights that comes with coleslaw and french fries. Walleye and shrimp are also offered. Mouthwatering prime rib is featured on Saturdays. A children’s menu is also available.

“We work hard to provide great food and friendly service,” said owner, Ed Blankenship. Another special feature of the White Spruce is that it sits right on the river and is accessible from the Eagle River Chain. There are plenty of windows in the dining room and bar that offer a scenic view of the river. The White Spruce also has boat slips, providing space for up to twelve boats to dock up for refreshment after a cruise on the chain. In addition to their indoor seating, they also have a spacious outdoor deck. The

riverside deck, where they serve the lunch menu and drinks, has plenty of tables. There is also an outdoor tiki bar that is planned to open later in the summer. An independent nonprofit facility funded entirely by donations, memberships and memorials, the Vilas County Historical Museum is home to more than 48,000 memorabilia items. History-seeking guests have been visiting the museum for more than 50 years. Doors were opened Aug. 16, 1959, and have remained open every season since. The extensive collection of the museum features everything from area wildlife to furniture and clothing. The museum hosts an array of military items including uniforms, medals

and memorabilia, and a World War I Cavalry hat. It also has an assortment of Civilian Conservation Corps photographs. A large display of antique dolls, including Little Red Riding Hood, Shirley Temple, characters from “The Wizard of Oz” and Mary Poppins dolls, as well as a variety of bridal dolls, are just part of the compilation that can be found. There also is a Queen Elizabeth II doll which was created for the queen’s coronation. A popular attraction of the museum is the collection of snowmobiles, which showcases the world’s first snowmobile. The animal and bird room features a large collection of African animals col-

lected by the late Jim Froelich, a big-game hunter from the Sayner area. A zebra, wildebeest, springbok and warthog are just a few animal mounts on display. The museum gift shop offers books and flyers on the North Woods and also features books by North Woods authors. Postcards, T-shirts and replicas of early toys and items found in the museum are available for purchase. The museum will hold its annual chicken dinner Saturday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Sayner Community Building and pavilion. Tickets for this dinner go on sale July 10. Each ticket costs $10. Blue Heron Supper Club getting rave reviews as the new place with great food, piano bar Located in Wild Eagle Lodge, Blue Heron Supper Club and Lounge is the newest Eagle River dining destination. The resort attracted Chicago natives Dave Black and Patti Katz Black, renowned for Nero’s Restaurant, to create a new restaurant in the former Boondocker’s Lounge building on site. “After extensive remodeling, we now have one of the best restaurants in the North Woods, the Blue Heron Supper Club and Lounge,” said Wild Eagle Lodge owner Curt Bradley. “The Blue Heron Supper Club is getting rave reviews for its wonderful meals and superior and friendly service, not to mention the warm and comfortable setting.” With more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant and entertainment business, Dave and Patti are thrilled to open the Blue Heron, offering the North Woods a new place to have great food with piano bar music. Patti and Dave previously owned Nero’s in Eagle River and now, with Wild Eagle, offer some of the previous favorite dishes blended with new offerings, catering to every type of diner. “This is the perfect blend of elegance and casual,” said Linda Kennedy of Northwoods Travel. “People can dress up for a date, or come in casual.” Now situated in a resort, the Blacks’ new venture is geared to accommodate any group that comes into Blue Heron, from

woodsy couture to snowmobile bibs. Blue Heron features plenty of seating and a full bar. The candles on the tables and mood lighting combined with Patti Katz Black playing her piano in the upstairs lounge on weekends makes for an elegant, relaxed atmosphere. The menu offers items to compliment everyone in your party. Blue Heron has great steaks, a unique cut of pork steaks unlike any other restaurant in the area, fresh fish entrées, seafood dishes, pasta and chicken entrées such as lemon garlic chicken and chicken piccata. They also offer Dave’s signature Italian dishes such as chicken Parmesan, pasta with pink sauce, chicken or salmon Vesuvio, butternut squash ravioli, Alfredo and spaghetti with meatballs. Blue Heron’s menu also features fantastic fish and seafood dishes including caramelized scallops on sautéed spinach, potato-encrusted sashimi-grade tuna on greens with wasabi, tilapia with a lime crust, fresh flown-in Arctic Char and Carolina low-country shrimp served over mushroom wild rice. Diners can choose to add sides dishes such as grilled asparagus, cauliflower au gratin, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and pasta. Blue Heron also has a kids menu and the best pizza menu in town, making dining with the family a pleasure. All of the decadent

They are thrilled to be back in the business of serving fine food while offering fun entertainment and a great dining experience. Blue Heron Supper Club and Lounge is located at Wild Eagle Lodge. Wild Eagle Lodge is nestled on 20 acres at the forested edge of the famous Eagle River Chain of 28 Lakes, billed as the world’s largest chain of lakes. The resort offers one-, two- and three-bedroom lodge homes that feature a complete kitchen, gas fireplace in the living area, two full-size bathrooms, highspeed Internet, satellite television that includes DVD players and a patio or balcony overlooking the lakes. Geared to the family,

Wild Eagle Lodge provides everything necessary for family vacations, according to Bradley. “Our resort amenities include tennis and basketball courts, a sand volleyball court, a playground area, plus a wonderful inside swimming pool that is for year-round use which includes a children’s wading pool, large whirlpool for up to 13 people, sauna, plus a workout room and massage room,” said Bradley. Paved walkways connect guests to more than 1,900 feet of shoreline. Along the walkways, guests will find numerous fire pits with rustic furniture, barbecues and picnic tables. Wild Eagle Lodge and Blue Heron Supper Club and Lounge are open to the public. Visitors can check it all out at 4443 Chain O’ Lakes Road in Eagle River. For family fun, visit Kartway, Rocking W Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous go-cart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf, miniature jeeps and many other activities, families will never get bored. The traditional road gocart track is the most popular attraction. “When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track,” said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for your racing pleasure. For children who can’t quite reach the pedals, Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car

racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners. If the first two courses are not enough of a thrill, Kartway has a slick track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eightcar track and leave your friends in the dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement on miniature jeeps and fourwheelers. Motorized bumper boats allow riders to splash around and bump each other until everyone is soaked. Drivers also can team up and push less-fortunate riders into the fountain located in the middle of the pool. Everyone is sure to be drenched after this ride. For a glorified water-balloon fight, check out Water Wars! In this game, two

people are given a bucket of water balloons. Each person goes to their respective area and loads the balloons into a slingshot to send them flying to soak their opponent. If you want to test your skills on the putting green, Kartway has an 18-hole miniature golf course. Challenging for all ages, players will have to avoid water hazards and obstacles in order to defeat their opponent. Kartway also serves candy, chips, soda and water available at the concession stand. Picnic areas also are available. Kartway’s well-trained staff operate and supervise the rides in order to avoid any accidents. Nolan said the staff members aged 16 and older control the adult rides and those younger than 16 are responsible for the kiddie rides. Tickets for the go-carts, slick track, NasKart, bumper boats and golf are

Northland Clothing Co., a division of Northland Marine located in downtown Three Lakes, has been a North Woods favorite place to shop for active outdoor clothing and footwear since 1976. Owners Laura and Mike Boers originally opened Northland Marine as a family owned marine and accessory store with a repair shop. Over the past 37 years they started adding clothing, swimwear and other outdoor products at the request of customers. New this year, the Boers have made some big changes by separating the marine and clothing aspects of the shop. Northland Clothing Co. is now in its own building with an expanded selection of apparel, accessories and a full shoe store. Both stores are still located at the same location in downtown Three Lakes. Northland Marine is the world’s largest MinnKota trolling motor parts and accessories dealer. In addition to the store they have a huge online business that can be found at northlandmarine .com. The new Northland Clothing Co. remains a division of Northland Marine and is located right next door. The increased space has allowed them to expand their inventory of clothing and accessories. Not only is the footwear they carry stylish, it is also comfortable and durable for those with an active lifestyle. The shoe store also offers the popular SmartWool socks and Wigwam socks, made locally in Sheboygan. Water enthusiasts will find accessories such as towable tubes, wetsuits, life jackets, water toys and more for family fun on the water. The apparel selection at Northland Clothing Co. boasts an extensive selection of fashionable and functional gear and clothing. The store prides itself on offering quality products in a variety of price categories. Infant through adult extended sizes are offered throughout. Many seasonal visitors anticipate purchasing their sportswear at Northland each summer. The retail store carries men’s and women’s sportswear brands such as Columbia and Woolrich. Functional fabrics offered with ventilation and sunblock options will protect outdoorsmen and -women from the elements while running, biking, fishing and more. They also offer Insect Blocker bug-repellent clothing by Columbia. “We offer technical clothing pieces to help you stay comfortable in the outdoors,” said Laura. Alexander’s brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and tripleraised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties. VACATION WEEK

There’s something for everyone at Fountain Blu in Eagle River “Listen to the customer” has been the mantra of Fountain Blu owners Chuck and Sally Kemp, now celebrating their 21st year. Located in Eagle River, Fountain Blu has something for everyone. With selections ranging from Eagle River apparel to garden accessories and novelty doormats featuring slogans such as “Welcome, just don’t expect much,” something new can always be found. Upon arrival in the unique store, the first thing noticed is the array of wildlife and Eagle River clothing. With what seems like the entire animal kingdom being represented, customers can find T-shirts featuring everything from mountain lions and moose to wolves and eagles. The newly expanded polar fleece section will keep visitors warm on those cool summer evenings. With a variety of styles, colors and sizes, these sleek fleeces are a beautiful addition to any wardrobe. For the wine connoisseur, new to Fountain Blu carries handcrafted cork cages and wine caddies. These metal pieces of art give wine a unique personality and protect the beverage from any harm. With shapes such as lighthouses and knights, these caddies have been flying off the shelves. The new cork cages can be a great two-in-one gift for a friend. The bottle-shaped basket opens so that a new bottle of wine can be inserted and presented. After the wine has been removed and enjoyed, the remaining cage holds corks and creates a beautiful centerpiece. Barrel, wine glass and other shapes are available. New this year Fountain Blu is carrying a line of flameless candles. They are perfect for the home or as a gift for people in situations that don’t allow them to burn open-flamed candles. The flameless candles come in different styles, colors and scents. One style comes from

Habersham Candle Company and is fragranced wax in the shape of a bowl. It provides the fragrance of a candle without any flame. The other style of flameless candle is a wax pillar with a realistic flickering light that mimics a flame. For chefs and barbecuers alike an assortment of cookbooks and utensils will allow visitors to take the rustic flavor of the North Woods home with them. Fountain Blu also carries a selection of dip mixes from Country Home Creations out of Michigan. Unique flavors include Pineapple Pecan Cheesespread, Caramelized Onion and Garlic, Chili Con Queso, and Strawberries and Cream. Fountain Blu sometimes features dip tastings on Saturdays. The unique store features Tervis Tumbler glasses that come in five different sizes. The 24-ounce size has a tapered base so that it will fit in most car and boat cup holders. Each one of these quality tumblers has a lifetime guarantee and comes double layered to stop condensation. If a Tervis Tumbler is dropped in the water, no one is to worry. These glasses float, making them perfect for a summer cruise on the boat. Specialty housewares, jewelry and bath and body products line the shelves of the store. A large selection of framed artwork is available as well as an assortment of metal wall art. These pieces can complete any room. For the kids, they have a children’s section with games, toys, dolls, puzzles and more. How better to pledge your allegiance or decorate your house than with one of Fountain Blu’s flags. With traditional selections such as Old Glory to flags with kittens and butterflies, these quality banners instantly make a statement. “Because we’re always changing merchandise and

getting new items in, we’ve always got some extras to move into the half-price area,” Chuck said. “You can find a good bargain on items in this section.” According to the Kemps, Fountain Blu has variety in its heritage. Before this store was opened a five-anddime store occupied the space. The store sold trinkets for no more than 10 cents. The Kemps try to keep that same variety and fair pricing alive with Fountain Blu as they continue to evolve. Fountain Blu is open daily at 9:30 a.m. Call (715) 479- 6312 for more information.
