Lakes of Vilas, Oneida among best for viewing, hearing loons In fall, data is sent to Loon Watch where it is entered into the Department of Natural Resources database and available for management decision-making. Loon Rangers also help protect loons by spreading the word to their neighbors and other lake users to steer clear of loons on nests and on the water.

“Listening Point” —Sigurd Olson If you are looking for the best place in Wisconsin to hear the wild calls of the common loon, it can be found in Vilas, Oneida, Iron and Forest counties.

Volunteers with Project Loon Watch say the latest population survey, done in 2010, showed that up to 30% of the state’s loon population resided on lakes in these four counties — an area blessed with the heaviest concentration of clean, fishable lakes in Wisconsin.

It is these lakes that not only attract tens of thousands of fishermen and vacationers each year, but also one of nature’s top fishcatchers — the common loon.

Loons once nested on lakes all over Wisconsin, but now are mostly confined to the upper third of the state, especially Vilas, Oneida, Iron and Bayfield counties. Out of the four loon species, the common loon is the only one that nests in Wisconsin.

In 2010, volunteers with Project Loon Watch estimated the state’s population at approximately 4,000 adult loons — up from the estimate of 3,373 adult loons in 2005.

Erica LeMoine, program coordinator of Project Loon Watch at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College in Ashland, said the estimated number of loon chicks was 600 during the sixth Wisconsin Loon Population Survey July 17, 2010.

Past research on where pairs of loons nested found 55% of lakes of more than 20 acres in Vilas County had at least one pair. Oneida County also was found to have about 65% of its lakes populated with loons. Often referred to as a lasting symbol of the wilderness, the powerful, streamlined birds are easily identified with their black-and-white checkerboard plumage.

Baby loons, which hatch in June, don’t have the distinctive markings, but will often accompany their parents.

The loon is holding its own in what remains of its Wisconsin habitat, but that doesn’t mean there are no problems. People, mostly well-meaning, harass the

birds, and shoreline development continues to eliminate nesting habitat.

One of the major causes in the reduction in breeding sites is that loon nests have been gradually replaced by cottages on the inland lakes in Wisconsin. Other shoreline development has further blocked areas formerly used as nesting sites. Because the loon needs to nest very close to the water’s edge, as more shoreline is developed, more birds are displaced.

The loon is not built for walking or even standing; its feet are set too far back on its body, forcing it to build nests close to the edge of the water where they are vulnerable to boat wakes and changes in water level.

For the moment, though, harassment seems to be the biggest problem. People like to look at loons close up, in the water or on their nests.

Frightening a loon to leave its nest reduces the chance of the eggs hatching, as well as making them vulnerable to predators.

Officials of Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute ask people to take an extra step and talk to those who get too close to a nesting site with a large boat, or the well-intentioned photographer who wants to shoot a picture of nesting adults with their young. Officials urge hobbyists to use highpowered zoom lenses.

er look at the North’s bird should use binoculars or a spotting scope to make observations, according to officials.

Loon Rangers For the past 35 years, Loon Watch has engaged an active volunteer network of “Loon Rangers” as its primary tool to collect critical long-term data on loons in northern Wisconsin. Volunteers attend a Loon Ranger Workshop in the spring to learn how to monitor loons, to hear what’s new in the world of loon research, and to meet other loon enthusiasts.

Throughout summer, Loon Rangers watch loons on a lake where they live, vacation or visit often. They record when loons arrive, if they nested, how many chicks were produced and any potential threats to the nest site.

Call of the wild The loon yodeling on a Wisconsin lake this summer might be the same one that was there 20 years ago.

The birds are said to have a life expectancy of 15 to 25 years, and return to the same body of water year after year.

The familiar calls of the loon that keep anglers company on many North Woods lakes have been broken down into four classifications.

The wail is probably the most frequently heard. A loon will wail when it becomes separated from the chick or if its mate fails to return.

The tremolo is an aggressive response given when disturbed by a boat or predator.

The yodel is also an expression of aggression and is given by the male during a confrontation.

The hoot symbolizes a call of curiosity and happiness.

Loons feed primarily on fish, frogs, crayfish, mussels, leeches and aquatic insects. By the end of summer, the young fledglings are capable of feeding themselves. The loon’s favorite food is the yellow perch.

In late autumn, loons can be seen congregating on large lakes, ready to fly south for the winter — somewhere along the southern Atlantic or Gulf coasts.

Fortunately, residents and visitors to the North Woods are able to enjoy the beauty and calls of loons each summer.

What makes a great-tasting pizza every time?

What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics.

North Woods vacationers will once again be able to count on a single source for complete information on dining, shopping, accommodations, attractions, fishing information and special events.

This summer, Vacation Week’s 12 weekly issues will be published from June 12 to Aug. 28.

No other summer publication in northern Wisconsin or Michigan’s Upper Peninsula can match the effectiveness, readership and size of Vacation Week.

Every cover of Vacation Week will feature color photos displaying the scenic beauty of North Woods lakes, forests and wildlife or recreational opportunities.

Inside are articles and photos of some of the best places to dine in the North Woods. Lakeside resorts, unique back-country shops, sporting goods stores with a complete line of fishing tackle, as well as retail stores with souvenirs also will be included.

Published by the Vilas County News-Review and The Three Lakes News of Eagle River Publications Inc., Vacation Week is distributed free of charge throughout Vilas, Oneida and Forest counties in Wisconsin, and Iron, Gogebic and Ontonagon counties in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Fathers Day Fly-in set June 15 Airplane rides, aircraft exhibits and flybys will be featured at the 23rd annual Eagle River Union Airport Fly-in and Air Show Saturday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fly-in and aviation day is an opportunity for the public to view activities at the airport and to learn more about aviation, according to airport manager Robert Hom. The fly-in will kick off with a Boy Scout Troop 601 pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by a burger and brat cookout from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol. The Eagle River Historical Society will serve root beer floats.

This year’s air show will

feature numerous performances, weather permitting. Airplane, seaplane and helicopter rides will be available when air shows aren’t taking place.

Aerobatic performances this year will include Grant Nielsen in a Pitts Special; Bill Cowden in a Yak-55; and Darrell Massman in a Panzl 330.

The free fly-in will include an aircraft display of civilian and ex-military airplanes, demonstrations, raffles and flybys.

An area also will be set aside for remote-control aircraft enthusiasts.

All proceeds will go toward Eagle River Airport improvements. The airport is located just off Highway 45 North in Eagle River.

The Eagle River Union Airport will host its 23rd annual Flyin and Air Show Saturday, June 15.

Youth fishing seminars set at Hi-Pines this year Free fishing seminars for children between age 5 and 13 will be held at Hi-Pines Campground in Eagle River at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday from June 18 thru Aug. 13.

All children will be given information about fishing and prizes at the free seminars. Prizes may include a rod and reel, tackle box, lures and other fishing items.

There will be hands-on instruction on fish identification, size limits, licenses, rigging slip bobbers, tying knots, fish habitat, netting and handling fish, catch and release, boating safety, environmental responsibility,

casting techniques and preventing aquatic invasive species.

The seminars are sponsored by the Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc., headquartered in Eagle River. All of the instructors are members of the Headwaters Chapter.

All youths in attendance will be given a “goody” bag.

Adults are welcome to attend with their children.

Hi-Pines Campground is located on Highway 45 just north of Eagle River.

Forest Lake Country Store in Land O’ Lakes offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a large selection of convenience

and specialty grocery items. The store also has a large variety of wines and craft beers.

Forest Lake Country Store offers food, more Nestled in the woods along Highway B is Forest Lake Country Store in Land O’ Lakes.

The unassuming store located on a curve in the road sneaks up and surprises visitors, but they are even more surprised by the unique shopping selection and dining experience found inside.

The noticeable wine selection hosts more than 150 boutique labels such as Chateau Ste. Michelle, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellar, Rombauer, Caymus, Decoy and more.

Obscure labels can be found by those who want to try something new. Bottles can be brought to the table, corked and served with crystal glassware.

More than 180 craft beers are offered in the beer selection.

Sprecher, Leinenkugel’s, Oomengang, Southern Tier, Lakeside and Bell’s Brewing, Lagunita’s and other craft brewers are available.

Guests may have a beer with their meal or mix a six-pack to take home for a private tasting party.

The shelves are filled with many other unique and tasty treats. Forty arti-

san cheeses from Carr Valley, Sartori, Widmers and more are carried.

Shoppers also will find Amish jams, Wisconsin salsas and gourmet popcorn.

One variety of gourmet popcorn is baby white rice popcorn, a hull-less popcorn that is soft, fluffy and won’t get stuck in your teeth.

Visitors also will enjoy the comfortable dining experience Forest Lake offers.

“The quaint dining area reminds you of sitting in your best friend’s kitchen.

Neither too big nor too small, it’s the perfect size for casual dining,” said owner Mark Gostisha.

A sense of camaraderie is seen in the dining room, with guests talking among themselves or chatting from table to table.

The country store’s menu is casual. Breakfast features large fluffy omelets, French toast with real Wisconsin maple syrup and eggs served with toasted homemade bread.

Lunch and dinner boast of special items such as handcrafted panini sandwiches and signature salads.

A popular evening attraction is Kris’ handmade

pizza. The dough is made from scratch and is not rolled until an order is placed. The sauce is created on-site and the toppings are piled high on each pie.

Customers frequently say the pizza is the best they have tasted north of Chicago, according to Gostisha.

For those who want to keep in touch, a general-interest, monthly newsletter is offered. New products are introduced and store events and Vilas County events are announced.

A wine-only newsletter is available, with new wine introductions, special offers and introductory prices.

Customers can send in an order and pick up their wines a couple of days later.

Land O’ Lakes area visitors might be interested in the Ride with Leinie biking event Saturday, Aug. 10.

Dick Leinenkugel will lead the bicycle ride, returning to Forest Lake Country Store at noon. The registration fee includes a tasting of Leinies beers, a brat lunch and a raffle ticket to win a Leinenkugel canoe.

All proceeds will benefit the construction of the 40-

The Forest Lake Country Store will also be hosting omore than 20 other wine and craft beer events throughout the summer.

These events include wine and beer tastings and presentations by representatives from wineries and breweries in Wisconsin and around the country. Most events are offered free of charge.

Forest Lake Country Store is located about seven miles west of Land O’ Lakes on Highway B. The store is open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. Once they arrive, visitors will understand why the slogan is “serving great food and a whole lot more.”

Candy lovers of all ages have headed to Tremblay’s for more than 30 years.

Originally Zimpelmann’s Soda Fountain, Tremblay’s offers a variety of treats made right in the store.

In addition to the store in Eagle River, there is a Tremblay’s in Stillwater, Minn., along with the original store in Hayward.

Those passing by can see fudge and peanut brittle being made through the windows at the front of the store. Employees are often stirring large pots for a curious and hungry audience.

Although Tremblay’s specialty is fudge, the sweet shop has many kinds of chocolate treats, including turtles, hand-dipped chocolates and chocolate clusters.

Fudge balls are made in chocolate, coconut, peanut

butter, maple and vanilla flavors. Tremblay’s currently offers 14 different flavors of fudge, including dark chocolate, cookies n’ cream and peanut butter chocolate.

The store offers a wide selection of candies. Many flavors of saltwater taffy and cashew and peanut brittle are popular favorites, in addition to three different flavors of almond bark.

Sugar-free candy also is available, including sugarfree clusters of pecans, cashews, almonds, peanuts and raisins with vanilla or milk chocolate.

The annual Three Lakes Car Show is set for Saturday, June 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Petroleum Museum on Highway 45 north of Three Lakes.

Ed Jacobsen, owner of the Petroleum Museum and sponsor of the car show, said he’s seen the number of cars entered as well as attendance at the show grow every year.

“We are happy to offer this beautiful array of vintage and new cars and trucks for the public to enjoy every Father’s Day weekend here in Three Lakes,” he said.

Three Lakes Winery has donated a $20 gift certificate for every car entered in this year’s show, according to Jacobsen.

Winery President Mark McCain offered this incentive in an effort to boost tourism in town.

“The museum and winery each offer tourism attractions in Three Lakes and have become natural partners over the years, so let’s join forces in the car show this year,” he said.

This incentive adds to the free sandwich and free drink every car owner receives for attending.

Summer Thunder Motorcycle Rally scheduled June 14-15 in Minocqua The Northwoods Summer Thunder Motorcycle Rally is set for Friday and Saturday, June 14-15, in Minocqua and will feature a variety of motorcycles, local taverns and restaurants, music in the park and scenic rides.

The Lakeland Tavern League will present three different Fun Runs with stops along the way. Participants can get booklets stamped at all designated stops on the route for an entry in the prize drawings for each completed Fun Run.

The booklets are now available at participating taverns, the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce and Northern Lights HarleyDavidson.

The Spicy Tie Band will perform live music Friday night from 6 to 10 p.m. at Torpy Park while riders and locals enjoy refreshments.

A portion of event proceeds for the 2013 rally will benefit Lakeland Area Special Olympics.

Saturday morning will kick off at Northern Lights Harley-Davidson in Arbor Vitae at 9 a.m. The Lake-

land Area Kiwanis Club will have brats cooking on the grill until 2 p.m. The dealership also will have demo rides and a garage sale with obsolete and closeout leathers, T-shirts, clothing and helmets.

The rally is expected to attract motorcyclists from all over the state, and the town of Minocqua will have the opportunity to welcome the two-wheeled guests by providing an afternoon group ride at 5:30 p.m. Saturday from the Minocqua Park Complex on Highway 70 to downtown Minocqua

and Torpy Park where Tuscan Road will perform until 10 p.m.

At 8 p.m., during a band break, more than $1,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded through Fun Run and raffle drawings. Participants must be present to win. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lakeland Area Special Olympics.

Take A Kid Fishing Day slated Sunday in Conover The Conover Lions Club and Muskies Inc. will sponsor the annual Take A Kid Fishing Day this Sunday, June 16, at Lake Itsy Bitsy, located in the town park.

This free event will begin at 11 a.m. with registration and fishing for all children age 12 and younger. The town park is located on Highway K East.

Local guides, made up of chamber members and community volunteers, will assist the children in catching stocked trout beginning at noon.

Fishing poles and bait will be provided. Fish cleaning and bagging also will be provided. There will be prizes throughout the afternoon.

The children catching trout with a gold hook will win special prizes.

If “Walter,” the biggest fish, is caught, it will be mounted and donated by

Lax Reproductions.

The taxidermy shop, on Highway 45 between Conover and Land O’ Lakes, has been rating the free mount for many years.

A food and beverage concession will be open throughout the day. There

will be raffle prizes, including a half-day of fishing with Brian Blettner of “Backwoods with Brian.” Many other local sponsors also contribute to this event.

Fishing and water sports have long been part of the North Woods tradition.

St. Germain Sport Marine has been working hard to keep that tradition alive over the years. Owners Tom and Kim Christensen have created what is now one of the largest dealers of live bait, fishing accessories and water sports supplies in Vilas County.

The store is a Department of Natural Resourcesregistration agent, where visitors can register all their boats, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.

Boats and boating equipment are offered to customers for sale or rent.

Fishing tackle, live bait, toys and gifts can all be found at St. Germain Sport Marine.

Many different styles of boats are featured, such as Sylvan pontoons and aluminum boats.

Each presentation is a stand-alone session with two species discussed and will be followed by a question-andanswer period.

“The presentations are an excellent way to introduce anglers of all ages to the sport of fishing and how

best to enjoy one of the outdoor recreational activities that Wisconsin has to offer,” said event organizer Colin Crawford.

Gifts and art found at Trading Post stores From fine clothing to handsome Navajo rugs, from exquisite silver and turquoise Native American jewelry to Depression glass, from children's books to antique Skookum dolls, the two Trading Post stores in downtown Land O' Lakes boast an amazing mix of memorable merchandise, according to owners Barb and Harold Nehring.

Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques, side-by-side stores in downtown Land O' Lakes, have been “must see” attractions for Land O' Lakes residents and visitors.

Trading Post Internationale is celebrating its 68th year, while Trading Post Antiques is more than 21 years old. The Nehrings, who in 1964, took over the original business started by Harold’s family, have expert knowledge of their wares and offer friendly and personal service to customers.

Throughout both stores, visitors will find the widest selection of authentic handwoven Navajo rugs in the area, including rare turn-ofthe-century masterpieces.

Like the older rugs, the new Navajo rugs are examples of the highest-quality Navajo weavings. Both old and new, for the floor or for the wall, the rugs can be the perfect accessories for rustic North Woods homes or sophisticated city dwellings.

Native American art enthusiasts will find a selection of handmade Ojibwe (Chippewa) woodland Indian beadwork and quillwork, including porcupine quill boxes in a wide variety.

These boxes, made of birch bark and sweet grass, are decorated with natural and dyed porcupine quills.

Antiques include majolica, Depression glass, oil lamps, kitchenware, pottery, paintings, clocks, Jim Beam bottles, primitive and Victorian furniture, wicker, duck and fish decoys, railroad items and Oriental rugs.

Trading Post Antiques also has Indian “Skookum” dolls in its comprehensive collection of handmade

items celebrating Native American heritage.

“These dolls, sold as souvenirs from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, have become highly sought after.

Each one is hand painted and uniquely dressed. It is rare to find so many in one place,” said Nehring.

Both Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques house a variety of Hopi and Navajo kachina dolls, hand carved from cottonwood tree roots and then hand painted. Each represents a special spirit, which connects mankind to the gods in the Southwest Native American tradition.

Trading Post Antiques also carries handmade Taos and Cochiti Indian drums and lamps with deerskin shades. The hides are hand cured and the drums are carved out of cottonwood.

Drums and lampshades are then hand painted by the Pueblo artists.
