tinue until Dec. 16 by appointment only. Call 916-224-6793 for more information. Paula Wenzl-Bellacera, a Sacramento native, met her now-
husband, Joseph Bellacera, almost 20 years ago through the regional art scene where both had been showing their artwork in Sacramento galleries. At that time they were both painting and photographing regional landscapes. Joseph was particularly noted for his portrayal of tumultuous skies. Paula, on the other hand, focused on Sacramento iconic structures. Now their artwork has moved in different directions, Joseph creates colorful abstracts about light, color, and pattern, and Paula is a ceramic sculptor creating whimsical animals full of personality.
The West Sacramento Historical Society has been very busy. They have applied for another grant to the California Digital Newspaper Collection Project (CDNCP) in an effort to digitize News Ledgers dating from 2008 to early 2015. They are currently digitizing the years from 1964 to 1993. California Revealed is digitizing the years from 1994 to 2007. After this latest application, members Karen Whiteside from Dixon
and Cecilia Vasquez from West Sacramento will have completed the News Ledger project. Something Special is a collection of favorite, and well-used recipes from the East Yolo Senior Citizens. In 1971, in Broderick, the seniors and some of their friends, compiled these recipes. They will be reprinted. The spiral bound book has 143 pages and was created by the contributions of various East Yolo Senior Citizens and their favorite recipes. They have included

The Bryte VFW Memorial: Vice-President, Heana Maestas, has been working for a number of years toward nominating the Bryte Memorial Post 9498 as a California State Historical Site of Interest. BY JAN DALSKE The California Senior Legislature (CSL) has completed their annual 3 day session in the Capitol. They have voted on what they consider to be the top legislative priorities for the coming year. The mission of the CSL is to help preserve and enhance the quality of life for older Californians and their families. They achieve this mission by developing a forum through which older Californians can develop their legislative priorities and let the California and Federal legislators know what they are. This is accomplished through an annual Session, a three-day model legislative session, where proposals are considered and prioritized. Senior Legislators then seek state lawmakers to author at least 10 of the Session’s priority proposals. The CSL works throughout the year to ensure adoption of these measures. The top priorities for 2019 include: 1) Labeling of Prescription Drugs, by including the purpose of the medication. 2) Money to fund grant programs which will authorize the use of moneys in the electric program investment charge to fund grant programs to provide transportation to nonemergency medical services for seniors and disabled populations that are located in rural, desert, and mountain areas. 3) Amendment of the definition of “Mandated Reporters of Suspected Financial Abuse of an Elder or Dependent Adult” to include the officers and employees of businesses licensed under the Money Transmission Act for making wire or money transfers. It would increase penalties, including providing for full reimbursement of losses, for officers or employees of these businesses who fail to report as required. 4) Veterans Affordable Housing: This measure would establish a rental housing assistance program and would require Dept. of Veteran Affairs to coordinate access to affordable housing with existing State and Federal Veterans services and provide detailed information about the assistance in a specified resource publication. 5) Fall Safe Housing: This measure would amend the Building Homes and Jobs Act to ensure that specific falls prevention structural features designed to prevent falls and facilitate aging in place are built into new housing funds generated by the Act.

Local Woman Wins First Medal in U.S. history at U23 Women’s Freestyle World Championships BY JAN DALSKE Alexandria Glaude, a local woman, won a bronze medal for Team USA at the U23 Women’s Freestyle World Championships in Bucharest, Romania. This is the first U23 Women’s Freestyle in U.S. history. Alexandria’s family moved to West Sacramento in 2005. She attended Bridgeway Island Elementary, and when Stonegate opened, she was transferred there. That is where she started playing sports. Basketball was her passion.
In seventh grade she started attending Our Lady of Grace School, and then, she went to high school at Christian Brothers. Alexandria kept up her dream of playing basketball until she was cut from the team in her Sophomore year. She was devastated. But she had a small group of friends who were on the wrestling team. They convinced her she was built to be a wrestler. One of those friends is Mallory Velte, who continues to have an amazing career as she just took bronze at her
weight class at the senior level. Alexandria’s mother, shared with us that “She ended up trying it the day after she was cut and wasn’t sold. She made a commitment to stick to it, and she ended up doing really well her first year. Her first tournament she took third
place. She continued to wrestle throughout high school and went on to be ranked #1 in the state at her weight
her senior year. She experienced a huge upset at state her last year of high school where she
was favored to win but took 3rd.” See Medal, page 2
