It’s not the bat, it’s the player

Little League has been a big topic this year in West Sacramento. We’ve all been watching the evolution of the Memorial Park plan. That’s been a big deal, not only for West Sac, but for little leagues all around Sacramento. The reason that the other leagues are watching so closely is primarily due to the money that is made by hosting tournaments. We have beautiful facilities, and an outstanding group of people running little league, and we proudly host tournaments each year. The other leagues would love to have the opportunity to stand in for us! The second reason little league was in the spotlight, is the “new bat rule”. At the beginning of 2018, a new rule took effect, making all previous little league baseball bats

illegal. The only bats that can be used must display the USA logo on them. The bats that have been USA approved have been redesigned with strict standards that affect the bat performance, to simulate the feel of wooden bats. The use of wooden bats was originally stopped, because the bats kept breaking. But as new bats were being developed, it was discovered that the material used to make the bats could effect the sweet spot (the spot where the ball hits the bat), which in turn affected how fast the ball came off of that bat. After interviewing at least six Umpire in Chiefs from Sacramento and West Sacramento, the little league officials were all in agreement, that the change in bats was a good thing! Each and every one of them said statements like, “There might not be as many home runs, but it

will level the playing field and will be much safer for the kids!” Well, here we are a month into baseball season and West Sacramento Little League has already had three home run hitters!! Once more, they are all three in the AAA division! That is the 9 – 11 year old bracket. For those of you that don’t know baseball…or little league baseball… AAA is the division between T-ball and Majors (equivalent to Minors). On April 3, 10-year-old pitcher and first baseman for the Astros, Matt Cuevas, hit the first home run of the season! Not only that, but the Astros were down by one, against the Cardinals, with one man on base. Matt hit a game winning home run! The second home run also came from the Astros. Just a week later, on April 10, the Astros were

playing the Mets, when 9-year-old Heath Lockheart hit the second home run of the season. Even though the Astros lost that game, it didn’t make that home run any less exciting!! The third home run took place yet another week later, on April 14, when the Royals’ 10-yearold first baseman, Ronald Yarbrough III, hit a smashing home run over center field fence. Apparently, those new bats might make the ball come off the bat slower, but the way these boys are playing, not any shorter!

The suspect exited the store where she was later contacted by police and found to have warrants for her arrest. The suspect was also in possession of a shopping cart at the time that displayed signage indicating theft if removed from the shopping lot. The suspect was taken into custody with-

There are a couple (probably more than a couple, I just haven’t heard about them yet!) of other athletes worth mentioning so far this year…. 10-yearold Isiah Machado, pitcher and center fielder for the Major’s Giants, has become a rally starter and outstanding hitter. To date, Isiah has made two game winning hits! When asked if he could feel a difference in the new bats from the old ones, he said, “The ball doesn’t go as far.
