CHAPTER 1 Amazing Gyeonggi-do

 Amazing Gyeonggi-do

What do you know about Gyeonggi-do? Is all you know that Gyeonggi-do is the area right near Seoul? What does WIKIPIDIA(the free encyclopedia) say about Gyeonggi-do?

It says the following: Gyeonggi-do is the most populous province in South Korea. Its name, Gyeonggi means “the area surrounding the capital”. Thus Gyeonggi-do can be translated as “province surrounding Seoul”. The provincial capital is Suwon. Seoul—South Korea’s largest city and national capital—is in the heart of the province but has been separately administered as a provincial-level special city since 1946. Incheon—South Korea’s third-largest city—is on the coast of the province and has been similarly administered as a provincial-level metropolitan city since 1981. The three jurisdictions are collectively referred to as Sudogwon and cover 11,730 km2 (4,530 sq mi), with a

CHAPTER 1. Amazing Gyeonggi-do 3

combined population of 25.5 million-amounting to over half of the entire population of South Korea.

Most of you work, live and study(right now!) in Gyeonggi-do. Let’s share something you know about Gyeonggi-do with your partner.

CHAPTER 2 Colleague

 Colleague

If you go to work five days a week, that means you spend more than half of the week with your colleagues. Sometimes, that could be more time than you spend with your family. The relationship between colleagues is not too official or too private. Your colleagues don’t know most of your private secrets like your family but they do know some things about you that your family doesn’t know.

The relationship with colleagues depends on how you define it. It will be very helpful and profitable when you

CHAPTER 2. Colleague 11

are open-minded and share your knowledge with your colleagues, helping each other. On the other hand it is different if it is only competitive and shallow and you are jealous of your colleague’s work achievements, never trying to help.

Since people could live to be up to 100 years old these days, you could work more than 50 years. It’s really important to meet good colleagues on your career path. Of course, you should be a good colleague too. Why don’t you find a small thing you can do to help your colleague today?

CHAPTER 3 Water

 Water

How many cups of water do you drink a day? People usually don’t drink much unless they consciously keep track of how much water they’re drinking. It’s kind of common sense that drinking more than 2L of water a day is healthy for your body. You can even lose weight if you do that consistently for at least three weeks.

Water is a transparent, tasteless, odorless, and nearly colorless chemical substance. It is the main constituent of

CHAPTER 3. Water 19

Earth’s streams, lakes, and oceans, and the fluids of most living organisms. It is vital for all known forms of life, even though it provides no calories or organic nutrients.

There are lots of things we take for granted in the world; water, air, love, etc. People don’t realize how precious and necessary they are until they disappear all of sudden. People think they will last forever, don’t they?

CHAPTER 4 Miracle

ď Ź Miracle

Sometimes it is difficult to remember, but it remains true, that not too long ago we were all children. For most children, faith is unwavering. Joy is a natural state. They seldom worry. They laugh and play a lot. They live in a world of wondrous anticipation where miracles are common place.

Actually, nothing has really changed now that we have become adults except our attitudes and the way we choose to see things. The wonder, the mystery, the magic, the sources of amusement are all still there if we look.

Miracles can occur anywhere. When someone cares, when years of animosity and resentment disappear in one act of compassion, when indifference is wiped away by an outstretched hand offered to help, when a human

CHAPTER 4. Miracle 27

life is changed by one simple act of love-these are indeed miracles.

In a world where pessimism and cynicism are valued, “anything is possible” has such a refreshing, hopeful sound to it. The next time you need a miracle, don’t wait for it to happen. You have the power to create it.

28 AMAZING GYEONGGI-DO Vol.2

CHAPTER 5 If

 If

There is an often heard refrain among lovers. I call it the “I will love you if” message. This is love offered with specified conditions and it simply doesn’t work. It suggests a bartering or a using of love, or the threat of losing it, as a continual possibility.

CHAPTER 5. If 35

“I will love you if you stay home and take care of the house.” “I will love you if you are successful.” “I will love you if you agree with me.” “I will love you if you stay constantly at my side.” And on and on.

It’s always difficult to meet these expectations, but they become even more perplexing when love is being used as leverage. Love should be a given, a constant. The message must be, “I will love you, no matter. Don’t worry about losing my love.”

Attempting to redesign another human being is fraught with danger, especially when we threaten to withhold our love as a means of accomplishing it.

36 AMAZING GYEONGGI-DO Vol.2

 What is the worst ‘I will love you if’ message you’ve ever heard?

 Why do you think people put conditions on their love?

CHAPTER 6 Sky

 Sky

Do you think sky can be different country by country? Some of you may realize that sky in European countries has bigger clouds than Korea. It’s so beautiful that it helps any picture taken look like a masterpiece.

During the daylight hours, the sky appears to be blue because air scatters more blue sunlight than red. At night, the sky appears to be a mostly dark surface or region spangled with stars. During the day, the Sun can be seen in the sky unless obscured by clouds. In the night sky—and to some extent during the day—the Moon, planets and stars are visible in the sky.

CHAPTER 6. Sky 43

Due to human activities, smog during the day and light pollution during the night are often seen above large cities. It’s getting hard to see the pure sky in Seoul. The more people are busy, the less they look up the sky. It’s kind of sad sometimes to live that busy of a life.

44 AMAZING GYEONGGI-DO Vol.2

 How often do you look up at the sky a day?

 What kind of sky makes you feel great?

CHAPTER 7 Smile

ď Ź Smile

Countless scientific studies have confirmed that a genuine smile is generally considered attractive to others around us. Other studies have shed light on how the act of smiling can elevate your mood and the mood of those around you. Still others have found a strong link between good health, longevity, and smiling. Most importantly, studies have shown that just the act of smiling (making the physical facial shapes and movements), whether the result of real joy or an act, can have both short and longterm benefits on people's health and wellbeing.

Smiling makes us attractive. We are naturally drawn to people who smile. There is a real physical attraction factor linked to the act of smiling. Not surprisingly, more severe or negative facial expressions like frowns, scowls, and grimaces actually work in the opposite manner, effectively pushing people away. Instead, use the attraction power of your smile to draw people in.

Smiling is contagious. How many smiles have been described as having the power to lighten up the room?

CHAPTER 7. Smile 51

Smiling not only has the power to elevate your mood, but it can also change the moods of others and make things happier.

Smiling makes you seem successful. Studies have shown that people who smile regularly appear more confident, are more likely to be promoted, and are more likely to be approached. Try putting on a smile at meetings and business appointments. You might find that people react to you differently.

Smiling helps you stay positive. Try this test: Smile. Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It's hard, isn't it? Even when a smile feels

52 AMAZING GYEONGGI-DO Vol.2

unnatural or forced, it still sends the brain and ultimately the rest of our body, the message that "Life is Good!" Stay away from depression, stress, and worry by smiling.

CHAPTER 7. Smile 53

 Why do people say smiling is a universal language?

 Do you usually smile at people before they smile at you?

 Why do you think it’s not common for Koreans to smile at strangers?

CHAPTER 7. Smile 57

CHAPTER 8 Escaping Ourselves

 Escaping Ourselves

Some of us believe we can rid ourselves of all of our troubles if only we could move our place of residence, surround ourselves with new people, change our job or go on a holiday. We forget that wherever we go, we take ourselves along. There is no escape from who we are. If we are depressed in Busan, we’ll be depressed in Seoul. If we feel lonely and alienated in Daegu, we will also feel so in Ulsan, or Jeju-island.

When we do change our scenery, it may, for a time, make things seem better. Eventually, however, we are faced with the same choices, or lack thereof, the same attitudes, the same feelings. This is also true when seeking new lovers. We decide we have made a bad choice, so we stop the music and change partners. We’re happy again for a time. But we bring into each new relationship our problems, our fears, our limitations.

CHAPTER 8. Escaping Ourselves 61

Soon we find ourselves back where we started, anxious, unhappy and looking for more.

It is so simple these days to end a relationship that there appears to be little motivation to even attempt to work at it. It seems easier to just move on down the road and try our luck again. If we are truly seeking long-lasting love as we all say we are, with commitment, satisfaction, and deep joy, there is only one way to achieve it. Changes will have to be made within instead of without. There is no other way.

CHAPTER 9 TV

ď Ź TV

Television is a tool that can be used both for good and bad purposes, but as we know it to exist today it’s mostly detrimental to our well-being. Here are few compelling reasons why you should stop watching TV:

CHAPTER 9. TV 69

1. It feeds your mind with bias. A great reason to stop watching television is that it’s filling your mind with useless or biased information. Unfortunately, most of us think that newscasts and shows present the truth in an objective manner, but in reality everyone has a bias and TV programs are no exception. Most popular programs—be they dramas or news—show us the world only from one perspective.

2. It makes you feel bad about yourself For commercials to work, they need to convince people that they are not good enough as they are. For example, in order to persuade you to buy beauty & fashion products, they

first

need

to

make

you

believe that

you

aren’t beautiful and attractive. Or, to persuade you to buy a car, they first need to make you feel that you are unimportant. Television is constantly filling your mind with emotionally disturbing thoughts and can ultimately turn you into you own enemy.

70 AMAZING GYEONGGI-DO Vol.2

3. It’s harming your health Another obvious yet often unrecognized reason why you’d better stop watching TV is that it’s having a negative impact on your health. Indeed, over the last several years research has shown that watching TV for even just a couple of hours every day can significantly increase the chances of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

4. It disconnects you from people People are social beings with a deep desire to connect and communicate with others. However, being used to spending hours upon hours watching TV, the majority of them sooner or later end up feeling lonely, away from the presence of friends and family. Naturally, they become depressed, since they don’t have anybody to share their experiences with during their journey of life.

CHAPTER 10 The Value Of Loving

ď Ź The Value Of Loving

So many of us take life and love for granted, and bemoan the fact that we have so little control over either of them. We seldom slow down enough to consider the wonder of our existence and rarely take the time to appreciate its many miracles. We trash the world as if there were no limits to it and only occasionally consider our responsibility toward enhancing it.

CHAPTER 10. The Value Of Loving 79

Yet, the world is a generous place, giving so much and asking for so little. Every person on earth is a unique creation and they are ours to discover and profit from. I am convinced that when we die, as we all must, we will not be held accountable for anything as much as how we valued our existence.

CHAPTER 11 Being Who We Are

ď Ź Being Who We Are

People who feel good about themselves are not easily threatened by the future. They enthusiastically maintain a secure image whether everything is falling apart or going their way. They hold to a firm base of personal assuredness and self-respect that remains constant. Though they are concerned about what others think of them, it is a healthy concern. They find external forces more challenging than threatening.

CHAPTER 11. Being Who We Are 87

Perhaps the greatest sign of maturity is to reach the point in life when we embrace ourselves—strengths and weaknesses alike—and acknowledge that we are all that we have; that we have a right to a happy and productive life and the realistic limitations. In short, we are, each of us, entitled to be who we are and become what we choose.

CHAPTER 12 The Weight Of Guilt

 The Weight Of Guilt

If you have been carrying around an excessive burden of guilt, I have a simple suggestion: write the words, “I forgive me,” on a piece of paper. Say these words over and over and over again. Don’t stop until you get the message. Then throw it away, burn it, flush it—anything to be rid of it.

CHAPTER 12. The Weight Of Guilt 95

We spend so much time and energy browbeating ourselves over past mistakes. It’s a wonder some of us can even move under such a weight of guilt.

The time has come to say, “enough!” If it is forgiveness we need, and it is not forthcoming, then we must ask for it, pleading our own ignorance if we must. We have a right to ask for understanding as well, because we are simply human, imperfect in so many ways. We must learn not to be controlled by guilt, while also learning to forgive those who inflict it upon us.
