Pipe Shop Welcomes âThe Pinball Machineâ On April 28, the Pipe Shop held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome âThe Pinball Machineâ to its electric pipe bending inventory. The dual-headed bender that uses laser spring back correction, was named for its two bend heads that look like pinball flippers. Manufacturing Engineer Nick Brady (X59) said, âThe team implemented new features on the machine such as an accurate 3-D simulation and empty bend tooling, all of which, will help reduce cost, improve safety, and increase engagement.â During the ceremony, Pipe Bending Specialist Robin Moody (X42) operated the first bend. âIâve been here 32 years and this is a great machine that is easier, safer and faster to operate,â he said. Facilities Project Engineer Curtis Armstrong (O41) led the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon. âThe installation and commissioning of the new machine was successful, due to the great teamwork and partnership between the Pipe Shop, Manufacturing Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, Planning, Information Technology, and the machineâs manufacture, Unison Ltd.,â he said. âThe team fully committed to a goal of integrating safety, ergonomics, 5-S, and technology that led to this cutting-edge innovation.â
May is National Electrical Safety Month Newport News Shipbuildingâs Electrical Department (X31) is taking part in National Electrical Safety Month by raising awareness about electrical safety. The department has placed posters and banners around the yard from Pier 2 to Dry Dock 12 and at nine of the turnstiles in honor of the month. âRaising awareness about electrical hazards is the key to reducing home electrical fires, injuries and even death,â said X31 Trade Director David Batdorf. âWhether employees are at home or at work, electrical safety is important at all times. Our goal is to educate employees on small things that they can do to improve the electrical environment around them.â The department also handed out small gifts and released a newsletter and a short video featuring several electricians and their âWords of Wisdomâ regarding electrical safety. Watch the video highlighting Electrical Safety Month on Yardnet.
